I opened the side cover, checked the board, and found that the board looks the same as your UA-cam model. So I went ahead ordered your Supercapacitor (which took more than 2 weeks to arrive!). I replaced the capacitor, but to my surprise, now the screen is not even flashing, and there is no sign of life of the printer even I tried the "reset". I did everything very carefully, and I think I am pretty good on electronics repairs and using soldering tool (mine is 40W I believe). So this is pretty much a mystery to me... I then opened the cover on the other side where the power board is located. The power board looks similar to the one you demonstrated on the UA-cam, but not exactly the same. It does have 2 fuses which are all good after checking, and there is no sign of anything turned, or mold. I measured the voltages at the connector (8-pin) the 2x 24V are presents (24.5V) ... what could be wrong according to your experience? I just don't like to throw away things like this which are well engineered and lightly used (we might have just printed less than 500 pages!). Thanks in advance for your advice!
Yes unfortunately the window of opportunity to repair your printer had passed. As you have now learnt you must replace the supercapacitor when it reaches the "having to power it on whilst holding the button down stage". If you don't replace the supercapacitor and you keep turning it on using the power button method eventually the main board gets wrecked completely. If you had replaced the supercapacitor at the very moment the problem began your printer would still be functioning today and would continue to work for the next 5 years. It is also important that the supercapacitor gets replaced from the topside and not pulling the motherboard out flipping it over and replacing it from the bottom side just because you want to do a nice clean job, the boards are multilayered not two sided and the risk of damaging internal board layers is very high. The moment the problem begins the supercapacitor must be replaced or with in 3 months you'll have to buy a new printer
Hi Terry, i did the repair and it works, now my computer can't communicate to the printer. Screen says receiving data. FIXED! I did a firm ware update and restarted computer, all good!
Thanks for the video Terry. My MFC 2700dw was unplugged for a week and now only the buttons below the LCD stay on meanwhile the LCD flashes without staying on. How do I fix this printer to stay on?
Great video, any chance the power supply video can be shown? This trick did not work so Im sure its the power supply as you mentioned. If its the fuse im wondering if I can just go up a knotch that way it doesnt blow again. thank you.
Do the test three times in a row just to be sure. In a lot of the cases I see now due to the age of the printer it is not a dead power supply causing it not turn on. The supercapacitor can leak it's alkaline contents on the main board which corrodes it and kills the main board in the process
If it's an old wifi router your using you need to change the network settings in the printer to a static IP address and communicate with the printer by IP address. The down side of this is any Apple products will have trouble communicating with the printer. If your router is new leave the printer network settings set to auto IP and communicate by Node Name. If you are using wifi boosters or repeaters on your network you must connect the printer to your primary wifi router by either wifi or cable connection.
Hi Terry. I confirmed the issue was the capacitor with your test sequence and ordered one. During that test I noticed during that the printer had stopped connecting to the WiFi network. Replacing the capacitor fixed the power issue but WiFi still doesn't connect (not able to connect to the WiFi network although it does see some of them; maybe receive is working but transmit is not???) Not really a big problem as I was able to hard wire to an ethernet port on my router. However knowing that the printer is now impaired should I ever need to move it to a location away from a router ... does it seem to be a frequent occurrence that the capacitor blowing fries the WiFi card? Is there a replacement part for the WiFi card - I noticed a daughter board plugged in to the main processor board and thought that may be a WiFi card. I have the MFC-L2740DW product. At any rate, thank you so much for saving me the money to replace the printer right out. It is much appreciated.
@@TerryJonesPrinterRepairs Hi Terry - Thank You for the reply. Sorry I am late responding as I don't sign in much. I am in the US. Everything has been working fine using the ethernet cable. You need to change the supercapacitor on the motherboard. The fact that you couldn't turn your printer on is a sign that the super capacitor has failed and is about to leak. You have about 3 months before the printer is dead completely

See the message from the guy above who let it go too late, you have to change the supercapacitor if you want a printer that works in 3 months, being unable to turn the printer on is a sign the capacitor is starting to leak and is about to corrode your motherboard.

I have the L2740. When I turn it on, the screen turns on but it's blank (no logo), none of the buttons light up. The screen then turns off and I can hear the printer's initiating sequence (motors, fans start moving). Then a "click" noise happens and the printer shuts off. I tried to do the reset like you showed, but the machine still behaves the same. Would appreciate to get your take Mr. Jones!
Hi Terry, I have a MFC-J475DW that stopped turning on after I unplugged it and plugged it back in. When I did the reset procedure, the lcd screen quickly flashed white, then turned off. Since it still turned on, I went ahead and replaced the supercapacitor; however, it is still behaving the same way. Any ideas what's going on, and what I can do to fix it? Thank you!
Did you install the new super cap the right way around? Some replacement supercaps are acually labelled the wrong way around. + is - All super caps have the same physical layout simply install the new one "looking the same way" and ignor the + and - symbols. An entire batch I received from china recently was back to front.
my dcp-L2520DWR printer shows flashing squares on the display every 3 seconds when the power cable is turned on, what could have broken? I did not find a super capacitor on the main board
Very informitive video thank you so much! I have the same printer as shown in the video (Brother MFC-L2740DW). However my printer receives power but the screen blinks white. Other computers do not recognize this as a printer anymore. Will your method work for my issue or is my printer a brick. It would be great to hear what you have to say. Thank you.
No you have a blow-up main board or scanner replacing the capacitor will not fix your problem. Unplug all cables from the motherboard accept the power supply and the screen cable to isolate if it's an external part other than the main board that has failed.
The clock is ticking you need to change the dead supercapacitor, that dead supercapacitor starts to leak alkaline salts when it fails and corrodes the bottom right corner of the motherboard.
Great info, but the video cuts out at 15 minutes for me. Do you have the rest of the video somewhere? Also, you mention creating a video testing a regular capacitor, but I can’t find it on your channel. Did you ever try that?
Hello I'm writing from Rome. My quite new Brother printer is the basic L2375DW which had replaced a similar but older very sturdy model. Well, the new one konked out suddenly. The printer repair shop told me it was capacitor failure as its outflow current was half the normal current) (??). Anyway I tried the reset system several times but it didn't work. As you said at the very beginning , if the reset doesn't work then it's not the capacitor and not to try it out. Quite confused now. Does this mean the new machine is dead or is there another maybe complicated reason? Thanks so much, hope you can answer me on the what to do now question. I had also watched your soldering video, very interesting and very detailed. Thanks so much, Kate
I’m sorry for the inconvenience. I really appreciate this. The printer turns on the problem that I’m having is the temporary thing that I was doing turning off the printer waiting a couple of minutes and then plugging the extension at the same time. That part is no longer working. I’m able to print things but I’m unable to use the Bluetooth. It’s no longer letting me send Bluetooth with my printer. Don’t know if this is what you mean but I appreciate you thank you.
I have a MFC-L2720DW, and a similar problem. After reading the comments here I've decided that I should look into the process of updating the firmware. After a power outage my printer is cycling on over and over. The scanner head moves a few steps and then the printer resets and starts all over again. I'm stuck in that loop. The scanner head eventually makes it to the end and can go no further so the drive belt just clicks over the cogs and then the printer resets again. I opened it up and reversed the belt to return the scanner head to home and the same process repeats - scanner moving a few steps with each automatic reset until it hits the end of the track and just clicks. I have tried the reset but I can't seem to interrupt the power cycling loop. I'll try to replace the super-cap if you think that will solve it.
Unfortunately you have left it too late you needed to change your supercapacitor a few months ago. You will find your motherboard will have a section that is corroded from the alkaline salts inside the supercapacitor leaking out this is why it keeps turning itself off and on rebooting endlessly. You need to replace your motherboard
@Terry Jones Printer Repairs thank you for the diagnosis. Is the motherboard an easy worthwhile repair for someone without much soldering skill? I think we might just cut our losses and get a new laser printer instead of pouring more time into this one. It is 6 or 7 years old and has seen lots of use. Something robust and more basic with wireless printing if you have any recommendations. Fax not required, could drop photocopying and scanning if that makes it less likely to fail. We've liked Brother over the last 15 or so years.
Also, looking for continuation of this UA-cam because it only goes up to removing the capacitor, but not soldering new one in. I’ll look around for that
I am dealing with something similar with my Brother MFC-9970CDW. When you turn on the machine the screen with brother logo comes on for a few seconds and the printer makes all sorts of noises as its warming up etc but then it dies, the fax/scan/copy buttons stay lit though (for some reason the Fax button is dimmer than the other two). The machine doesnt have an actual power button on the front, just a power switch on the side. Before I commit to buying a PCB is there a way to do a power reset on these machines to see if the problem is actually the PCB if not something else? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
plug a usb cable from your computer directly to the printer then download the firmware update tool from brothers website and update the printers firmware.
@@TerryJonesPrinterRepairs Thank you, that didnt do anything :/. I have disassembled everything and right now have the PCB and power supply board in front of me lol, not sure what to do at this point, I can invest $80 and get replacement boards but that would require a month long wait. Any thing I can test to see if its faulty and may be replace it? The capacitors on the power supply board are covered on the solder side with a plate that holds some components in place. The plates and the components are soldered onto the board, not sure if it'd be worth trying to take everything off as replacement board is $30ish.

Have an MFC-2720DW. The unit does turn on and the brother logo appears. Fan and various rollers etc. will go through the initial start up procedure. Then the screen will remain white with Brother logo for various lengths of time before you hear a click and it will start the entire process over again. Seems like it will continue to do this forever, it has randomly completed start up during this cycling and started working for me twice since the problem began. When it loses power or there is a flicker it returns to this state and will not complete power up.

When soldering the new capacitor to the board use lead based solder. It requires less heat and bonds better to the capacitor. Lead free solder is impossible to solder with and requires a higher temperature to work with which can damage the board or part. The end of the video is here ua-cam.com/video/Rfv-S-6G8rE/v-deo.html

The repair worked perfectly, thanks a lot! Did you get around to trying to replace the supercap with a regular capacitor?
Great video, any chance the power supply video can be shown? This trick did not work so Im sure its the power supply as you mentioned. If its the fuse im wondering if I can just go up a knotch that way it doesnt blow again. thank you.
Do the test three times in a row just to be sure. In a lot of the cases I see now due to the age of the printer it is not a dead power supply causing it not turn on. The supercapacitor can leak it's alkaline contents on the main board which corrodes it and kills the main board in the process
THANK YOU SO MUCH , SO GOOD OF YOU TO SHARE THIS. IT WORKS!!!
Do I have to completely remove the CB to install the new capacitor?
WOW, it worked! THANKS! Mine is a Brother HL-L2390DW
Thank you. It worked, just as you described.
That worked. Thanks. Any idea how to get my L2700DW from dropping off the network?
Replacing the capacitor fixed the power issue but WiFi still doesn't connect (not able to connect to the WiFi network although it does see some of them; maybe receive is working but transmit is not???)
Not really a big problem as I was able to hard wire to an ethernet port on my router.
Are you based in Australia and do you have a Telstra WIFI Modem Router by chance?
@@TerryJonesPrinterRepairs Hi Terry - Thank You for the reply. Sorry I am late responding as I don't sign in much. I am in the US. Everything has been working fine using the ethernet cable. I just asked the original question to see if you had seen the capacitor issue take out anything else with it. I am happy as is and the printer is still working great. Have a great week!
Thank you.... Thank you very much. I had a paper jam, turned the printer off and it would turn back on. It would have been ok, but I was a work and the next shift was coming on. Again Thank you.
You need to change the supercapacitor on the motherboard. The fact that you couldn't turn your printer on is a sign that the super capacitor has failed and is about to leak. You have about 3 months before the printer is dead completely
@TerryJonesPrinterRepairs Thank you I will let management know. 👍🏽
I have a dcp 8110 that will not turn on after initially it is used. You have to leave it for 20 minutes before you can get it to turn on. Can you help me thanks Jon
Replaced Super Capacitor & it absolutely fixed the power-switch issue!! However, I'm getting an ADF cover open error message that I can't clear.... paper isn't jammed or stuck in ADF. Any suggestions? Thanks
What model printer
Thanks for replying. A connector came loose after transporting the Brother MFC-L2700DW home from the workshop. Reconnected it & everything works great. Thanks for saving me the $250 for a new printer!! Please keep posting for your community followers!
Ok, I ordered the part from you. Do you also have a video for a layman on how you solder it back in? Thank you
ua-cam.com/video/KJjaFePeG8s/v-deo.html
Thank you! Did the reset and it works..all that it needed
See the message from the guy above who let it go too late, you have to change the supercapacitor if you want a printer that works in 3 months, being unable to turn the printer on is a sign the capacitor is starting to leak and is about to corrode your motherboard.
Annoying shits are a plague on us all. Thank you very much for this tutorial, which reinforces my suspicion that getting necessary home gadgets to work involves a form of magic not based in any logico-deductive paradigm. Notwithstanding that, I’m most grateful. Cheers from El Lay
Jones!
I just had this problem. Thanks my brother.❤
The clock is ticking you need to change the supercapacitor
So you think that’s going to happen again?
How do I fix this problem? It’s a good printer. This is the first time this happens to me.
@@renaldoferreira3693 the video at this link shows you how to do it from start to finish ua-cam.com/video/KJjaFePeG8s/v-deo.html
Merciii ca marche :)
Thank you so much!!
Thank you very much! First try and it worked!
my dcp-L2520DWR printer shows flashing squares on the display every 3 seconds when the power cable is turned on, what could have broken? I did not find a super capacitor on the main board
Thank you Terry!
Thank you
I just was thinking to buy a new printer. you saved me a printer

Worked perfectly. Thank you so much!
I found I was unable to solder to the remnants of the supercap. I un-soldered everything and soldered my new supercap onto the pads of the motherboard. It worked fine. + is up[ in case you were wondering.
I have a DCP-L2550DW which was unplugged and now refuses to turn on. There were no issues with it before this happened. I tried the unplug/plug/hold-power-button sequence and the machine is unresponsive. Brother refuses to honor the warranty because I do not have a receipt (bought it new from a private party). Should I replace both the capacitor and the PSU?
Just the power supply
@@TerryJonesPrinterRepairs The local authorized dealer was nice enough to order and sell a power board to me. Just installed it and it powered on immediately. Should I bother repairing the old one? The entire board cost $35. The website you list has the capacitor for $28. Seems like a better deal to replace the entire shebang

Great video thank you. I have a Brother MFC L2710DW. When plugged in fax copy scan lights blink on for a second, and display is just full of black squares. Any advice? You can buy the part here www.fixitfastelectronics.com/printerparts.htm
Hi Terry, is this problem consistent with brother L2710DW, as I am having the same problem machine will not turn on
Have you tried the reset procedure detailed in this video. If it still doesn't work you have a blown up power board.
@@TerryJonesPrinterRepairs yes I have numerous times, do you have any other suggestions, I was able to get the side panel of and their doesn't seem to be any physical component damage on the power supply, what is the part number for the replacement CAPACITOR
@@TerryJonesPrinterRepairs Thank you for your response
What SUPER CAPACITOR do I buy? There is a 1x, 2x, and 3x. It states that one must buy 2 to get fast delivery. Does 2x mean two capacitors or two times power as the 1x? Thank you.

clocks ticking you need to change that super cap as your failed one will be leaking and corroding the board
Thank you so much my one just started working
OMG IT WORKED!!!! Thank you so much!
fantastic working solution
Have an MFC-2720DW. The unit does turn on and the brother logo appears. Fan and various rollers etc. will go through the initial start up procedure. Then the screen will remain white with Brother logo for various lengths of time before you hear a click and it will start the entire process over again. Seems like it will continue to do this forever, it has randomly completed start up during this cycling and started working for me twice since the problem began. When it loses power or there is a flicker it returns to this state and will not complete power up.
Plug in a USB cable directly from the printer to your laptop and update the printers firmware
Great Video! Now just need to change the capacitor!
According to your video I have a bad PSU on my 2750DW. I have been unable to find a solution to this problem on youtube. Have you made a video about this or do you know a video that is at least partially applicable to this model?
It works! Thanks so much.
Thank you so much, it worked just fine for me !!!!
Seriously thank you so much!
thank you so much you def. just saved my work day
When soldering the new capacitor to the board use lead based solder. It requires less heat and bonds better to the capacitor. Lead free solder is impossible to solder with and requires a higher temperature to work with which can damage the board or part. The end of the video is here ua-cam.com/video/Rfv-S-6G8rE/v-deo.html
