    Video is good fun. But the part I like best is the ending paragraph. I always tell my kids when we get ready to leave to find some trash and pick it up. Leave the area better than it was when you got there. Nice fish!

      ...I use the 'dip' on roe when fishing for salmon and steelhead in the river as well. It really seems to trigger strikes when fish are sulky, just be ready for "questions" from less productive anglers.. my normal reply is; ''the same thing you're using...'' :)~

    I'm so jealous...for 2 reasons.... that is an awesome catch.... and 2. I cannot find ANYONE to go fishing with in southwest ohio... I hit all the big lakes around here, but usually by myself... I love white bass, largemouth, smallmouth, crappie .... Occasionally I snag a saugeye ... great video... great catch...my favorite bait is a white rooster tail.... not big into live bait, but i can handle it...no prob

    If you want to catch some big catfish use shrimp for bait. I use it when I fish the Chemung river for catfish. It works great. We have three species of catfish in the Chemung river the flathead channel and blue. That white albino catfish in the Chemung river nicknamed big sam is hybrid with all three species the flathead channel and blue. I don't know how rare that is. +Jake Radcliff - Sad and with no thought for the consequences. While fishing here my year old pup ate a discarded stink-bait holder with treble hook and leader attached... I worried I'd lose her and blamed myself, she's my little one. It took two days to find out what made her sick. Not something anyone should have to go through due to inconsiderate entitled people... ever used bacon for bait? works pretty well, if you ever get the time you aught to do a video of fishing and comparing different baits. I'm 14, and the biggest channel cat I've caught was only 6 pounds. i wish i lived closer to a lake, i just fish in the small creeks that run around here. how deep of water was you fishing? and was it a rocky bottom or sand?

    • @redlinetimber
      @redlinetimber  9 років тому +1

      Never tried bacon. Since I've begun targeting big cats, I've found they perfer letting little ones eat the scraps and then they eat the little fish. Kinda of a "two fer one" deal. I'm casting 80 to 90 ft from shore and sitting about 8ft deep in the transition zone between the rocky points and the sand/mud flats. At 14 that drivers license is just around the corner, time to start saving money and mapping your future trips... Tight lines and bent rods :)

      @CatFish21sm 9 років тому +1

      1moonbuggy
      Yea I've noticed that too. The little cats eat up the liver and such the big fish prefer live food. The problem I have is hooking my bait fish. I hook them to get attention of the larger fish but the way that works best kills them after only a few hours. If you don't mind spilling a few secrets how do you hook them and about what size are your bait fish and what kind of bait fish do you use? I personally prefer bluegill about 1-1.5 inches but I'm definitely open to suggestions!

    The key to eating big cats is to hang them and cut the tail off and bleed them out before cleaning them . The meat will turn white .

    • @redlinetimber
      @redlinetimber  10 років тому

      Now we're getting somewhere... Keep those fat cats alive on a stringer and/or wet gunny sack until you're ready to cut their tail, no more yellow catfish meat, just clean white flakey fillets :) Great input

    • @redlinetimber
      @redlinetimber  10 років тому

      You can wack 'em on the head, right before cutting the tail, so it's knocked out... But the general idea is to allow the heart to pump the blood out of the vessels to increase the quality of the fare. Proper handling and care of the catch is how I show respect for the harvest and those that enjoy the bounty :)

      Can't say where (ethics and all), during the first warm-up of the lake in spring (may-june), typically "cut" bait-fish that the big cats are targeting: bluegill, crappie or shad (use the gut section) And I like herring, as it's oily with lots of shiny scales. ;)

      Well after a little chuckle, I gave it some thought... Back in my logging days we used to say, "never holler 'ho' on a hard pull". So when I'd hook a tuff "turn" of logs, I'd tell the operator to "put some mustard on it"... in reference to "pouring coal" or "putting heat" to the boiler (steam boiler "donkeys" were used to yard logs back in the day). Basically, I'm making a colorful reference to the amount of pressure the rod puts on the fish :)

    great looking fish what kind of bait were you using??

    • @redlinetimber
      @redlinetimber  8 років тому +2

      +Ryan Hogan - Anchovy, cut in thirds, dipped in Tuna oil... I fish it on the bottom. Using a 3.0 hook, w/24" x 25# leader, clipped to a locking snap swivel, with a sinker slider moving on the 15# main line... leave the bail open and wait...

    Those are some pretty long rods

    • @redlinetimber
      @redlinetimber  10 років тому

      They're salmon and steelhead rods designed for PacNW rivers. Super sensitive tips with blank thru design for a stiff back-bone. They allow for casting long leaders (tuff to cast a six foot leader with a six foot rod), working fish around or under the boat and afford solid side pessure when turning hot fish... And they work great on BIG catfish. Here fishey...

      Some years are better than others and this was a good one! We're fishing whole herrings, cut in half at the guts, dipped in tuna oil. My other video "Using cut bait to catch BIG catfish", shows the rig and bait. Will be posting a new one on "How to Tie an Egg Loop knot to hold Cut Bait".

    what are you using for bait and rigs i love this vid thow

    • @redlinetimber
      @redlinetimber  10 років тому +2

      I prefer the cut herring or shad, something with shiny scales and lots of oils. The rig is a 3/0 octopus hook tied to a 24" leader, with an "egg loop" knot, under a sliding sinker set up. Coming soon: a "Rods and Rigs" video to help give a better visual of the system and knots. Check back soon and... Thanks for posting up!

      ...cut up bait-fish. The kind they prey on; shad, crappie, perch or kokanee salmon work best. I like to dip the pieces in tuna or shrimp oil to help disperse the scent trail as well...

    Please tell me that you did not release it after you caught it...I REALLY hate that!!!! Get some canola oil, a cast-iron skillet, season salt or Old Bay seasoning, black pepper, a catfish batter or some cornmeal, some hot sauce and mustard WITH a couple of beers, AND DINNER IS SERVED, BABY!!!!!!!! Add a side of grits and some collard greens...and you won't get up from the dinner table!!!!

      Since I think you can keep a secret and no one else is listening.... in the State of Jefferson, at the top of "no name ridge" is the spring head for "can't remember creek", follow that downhill to the impoundment and then you've found it... :)
