First time using moviemaker to throw together a fun little "First Person Virtual Scuba Dive." Filmed on a GoPro (thanks Seiji for lending). Also my first time scuba diving Lake Tahoe and first time visiting Tahoe in the summer. Needless to say I was very impressed.

I dove Tahoe for seven years, twice a week year round. Most dives were at Rubicon point to Emerald Bay. I layed hundreds of yards of white guide line to swim throughs and cool formations. Many are quite deep. I stayed above 278 feet on all my dives, but they were all mixed gas dives with independent doubles, stage bottles, decompression gas and 100% o2. My dives were always over three hours long. I covered a lot of ground. I lived in Gardnerville, Nevada.

Great video. Not be a grump, but I dove there a few times starting in 1978. Conditions have deteriorated so badly since then. The dive we called the " "drop-off" had visibility of at least 120' . Very similar to good day in the Bahamas . The huge grey black speckled granite boulders were perfectly clean with zero green algae on them. Iron pyrite ( fools gold ) glittered all across the brilliant white sandy bottom as we snorkeled out from the beach. I guess it's still clearer than your average lake. My forest service friends attribute the algae bloom to the golf course fertilizer runoff btw. Thank you for posting .
Sad , I recall going to Zadar in Yugoslavia (Croatia) and being able to look down 15 metres , in 1973.I wonder if the water there is still clear.

NO trash on the bottom...unbelievable! The video of Lake Mead the bottom is literally covered with sunglasses,beer cans and bottles,anchors everywhere,fishing poles. I guess the people that come to Tahoe are a little more responsible.

Looks like fun, but i'll stick with my homemade ROV. If i were scuba diving i know i'd see something interesting just out of reach another 50' down and be tempted to go look. With the ROV i could retrieve an iPhone from the bottom 600' below. Plus stay down as long as my batteries allow...hours...with fresh ones topside. The only thing that restricts me is the length of my tether.
I might add that all my dives were while wearing a dry suit with extremely thick thinsulate undergarments. Also a custom neoprene hood that was up to 10mm thick, very comfy warm, when inflated with argon, while is the way I did it. I owned my own compressor and mixed all my own gasses.

55 Degrees is pretty chilly, requires a high quality 7mm wetsuit to be comfortable. Low end 7mm work too but you'll be cold toward the end of the dive. Diving Tahoe is a treat since the water tastes amazingly sweet and it is far clearer than the ocean where I'm usually diving.
+aldraw that doesn't seem right. A 6/5 mm wetsuit is made for waters 32 degrees and below
+Hunter Morse I dive cold water year round. 7mm wetsuit is what I use for anything under 60 degree bottom temp. A 7mm at 32 degrees is actually fairly cold and a drysuit would be much more comfortable.

Why can’t the state try to prevent the algae blooms (from fertilizer run off) that are diminishing the visibility of the water. Comments mentioned used to be much clearer in the past. This should be addressed.
I can tell you that if you did that bubble attack to me and I didn’t know you were down there then you would have been filming a long brown streak behind me as I swam for dear life to the shore! I probably wouldn’t ever get back in a lake again, they’re creepier than the ocean.

I remember Tahoe being much clearer when I was a kid ('60's and '70's).I have a question I've been wondering about for years: Does anyone know when the lake was first formed? Was it the Ice Age? Anyways, great video!

Finally a video with the original sound also included. That drop off looks amazing. I'm wanting to pick up scuba so I've been looking around at videos of Tahoe, how cold does 55F really feel?
IveGotChicken ....... 55F feels pretty darn cold. You would be smart to get a 7mm wet suit with hoodie and gloves. You are still gonna be cold, just not frozen. If possible, try and get a dry suit and take a class on it. You will be so much more comfortable and enjoy the dive 100 times more. Either way, it is better to dive and be cold than to not dive at all. Hope this helps.
+skyym3 ha wow forgot about this vid, I've since been certified and got about 25 dives under my belt. I've been in 59F and it's rough
IveGotChicken Right on. Diving is an awesome sport, huh. If you live somewhere near a spot that you can regularly dive, once you purchase all your equipment, it really isn't to expensive of a sport. Glad to hear you got your C-card and are enjoying the sport. The coldest I have been in was around 50F with just a standard 7mm farmer john wet suit. I won't do that at my age now. It was quite miserable and unplesant to say the least. It was a very large swimming hole in a snow melt river run off. It was beautiful, but I did not have the proper suit for it. Stay safe, Cheers

I’m going to ask a dumb question but it’s sincere. Why are there so few fish? Has it been overfished or is this natural for most freshwater lakes, including the Great Lakes. I would love to dive fresh water and Tahoe looks like the place.

Did you rent all that gear or did you bring it with you. You guys really missed a (America's Funniest Videos) golden opportunity by NOT messing with those cliff divers....they would have shit their bathing suits (especially the girls). Awesome dive!

Is it expensive to dive down there? I dont have my own equipment in the U.S and its almost wintertime now, just wondering if its like a million dollars a dive
Yeah it ranges from $800,000 to $1.9million. Very expensive
Upwards of 2.5 million for a single dive but worth it. I'll be going back for sure. Mr Mills will have a guide of his go for 2 million but he doesn't like wasting his time for anything less than 5 million a day so it's tough with him.

I have an unreasonable but paralyzing fear of swimming in deep water. As long as I can clearly see the bottom from the surface, it's cool. Otherwise... Pass.
Same here. I only like to swim in swimming pools or very clear natural water. I don't think it is irrational. In dark waters you can't see any of the numerous potential dangers that might be lurking around you.
Great video! You guys need to work on your buddies skills though. You're too far apart. If there is an equipment malfunction, you might not have enough time to get to your buddy. I recommend you take a GUE Fundamentals course.
