From the Poi Dog Pondering Album: Pomegranate
Our Father was an Astronomer, Solar Physics was his specialty.
His work took him and his colleagues on trips around the world to be at the
optimal place for Solar eclipses, so they could observe and take readings. They'd to have their instruments made for them by
fellow engineers. There was always a workshop around them where they ground down the glass and turned the metal on the lathe to build the instruments they needed to read the heavens. It was all hand
done then. All their calculations were done with a slide rule and a chalk
board. (In fact, the first observatory/telescope housing they built was made from a grain silo!). It was fascinating to see.
And, all the traveling they did to exotic places lives with me still in my
imagination. He used to return with wooden carved boats from the south Pacific, trinkets from iIndia and woolen shawls for our mother from South america.
On one such trip, he went to the Altiplano of Bolivia for an eclipse...
sometime in the late 50's/early 60's... The footage in the first half of this video he shot there on 16mm film.
Notice the Pacific islander pattern on the spectrograph / telescope
instrument... this was after the Puka Puka, Cook island expedition, and they adorned it with the patterns they saw there.
Our Dad is the one in the Green Parka, with the beard & the big smile
I found this reel of film in our sister Chris's storage space after she
passed. Chris was a Folk Archivist and a Librarian, and this footage was well preserved and stored and
    labeled.
People often like to separate Art & science; but I feel they are exactly
entwined. Our father was a scientist, but he was always looking into the heavens trying to understand, but all the while fully knowing he could never fully understand - just accepting, and trying.
    Beautiful.
(the second half footage is from found footage of the celestial).
This is dedicated to my Brother Malcolm Orrall and our Sister Chris.

This is one of those all time great songs....should have been huge and should have reached an entire global generation. It just doesn't get better. Shame on Columbia Records....this album should have been top 20 around the world. It's a truly great album.

Had the good fortune to be there at the bar on Lincoln Ave in Chicago at the beginning of your run after Hawaii around 1997, actually met you in the bathroom there laughably, you were so kind...followed you to the Vic for the live album and then all the shows at the Park West . The best then and always...much love brother...

Frank, these lyrics come across as very spiritual to me....I know you said it just came to you walking one night in the woods thinking about your father, but I think you are keeping something a little deeper than that to yourself; either way this is one of your very best and it deserves a lot more coverage. Thanks for creating and sharing it.

Saw this band a few times in Chicago-(3 nights at The Vic for Pomegranate) Always an exciting and fun band to see. PDP always left us laughing, crying and completely worn-out from dancing 💗

I saw you all play a couple times at the Vic I think, once on New Years Eve. Saw you at Harper College too and I still have the red drumstick that was tossed my way. This song still moves me as it did in the '90s. Thank you for your work, and for being the soundtrack to many awesome memories.

Thanks for including the film loops on this video. We went to see Poi for the first time on the Pomegranate tour. Didn't know what to expect, but we had an old friend in the band. The music that night changed me. But what took it past 11, was the guy in the back, I think his name was Luke, was doing his own thing by putting 16 mm film loops to be shown on a screen behind the band. It made it the greatest show I'd ever been to before or since.

I had just started listening to Nick Drake's "Bryter Layter" 1970 album. The first song "Introduction" had me going; wait what!!!? that sounds very familiar those violin parts. Thankfully my music memory was able to connect it to "Big Constellation", at one time probably my favorite song. Pretty cool and interesting.

what a lovely post-father's day tribute! somehow the footage reminds me of tuvan nomads (except for the spectragraph/telescope)... i saw a documentary about throat singers from tuva some years back when i studied harmonic overtone chanting - i'll see if i can find it on the ever-expanding youtube video universe
