- An almost real-time ( I skipped a few stations and time between them- the trip is more like 45 minutes) video of the ride on Metro Transit's Hiawatha Line light rail, (route 55) between Target Field in downtown Minneapolis, through downtown, along Hiawatha Avenue, through the airport underground, then out to Bloomington and the Mall of America. Window views from both sides, exterior and interior shots of the train, plus a rear-window view from Fort Snelling, through the tunnel under the airport, to Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 stations. Enjoy!

Yeah, it was non-rush hour time period. And yes, many people take the train to Target Field. I went to Minneapolis and to a Twins game in August. The train was already almost full at the Mall of America station and by the time we got to the Franklin Station, the trains were jammed pack and riders had to wait until the next train to board, simply cause there was no room. And this was mid-day, so it was mainly people heading to the Twins game.
You'll have to come back and check on the New LRT Green line. It opens June 14th 2014 and runs between Downtown Minneapolis and Downtown Saint Paul going through the University of Minnesota. (The Hiawatha is now the Blue Line)
Yeah, as far as I know, the Hiawatha Line has not changed since I filmed this two years ago. In fact, a new line to St Paul is nearing completion. Maybe next time you go, it will be finished!
I love these LRTs. and it works well in a cold climate. If it works well in Minneapolis, it'll definitely be good for Toronto.
This is what I can expect? I plan on being in the Cities and also plan on taking the Hiawatha Line to the MoA in June.
I have been on this a few times, it is really quiet and smooth, I really like it. If I could use it to get to and from work everyday I would but I live in Edina and work in Shakopee so any kind of public transit is out of the question.
Yes, this was filmed sometime during mid-morning to just before noon, after the morning rush hour had ended. Most of the suburban commuters who take it ride buses to MOA in Bloomington and connect with the light rail line, as well as city dwellers who use the several stations located within Minneapolis proper. It serves the airport, and runs 24 hours between the two terminals. Of course, sports fans for the stadium and sightseers heading to the Mall of America ride it too.
@Astroranagun going back you pay the normal rider fee for LRT ($1.75 non-rush hours, $2.25 rush) then pay the difference at the Northstar station to total up to $7 i believe.
haven't been to msp area for so long. Really want to go to MN again.
Most people know the Hiawatha line as the Milwaukee--Chicago intra-city commuter metro rail... this is cool, but the former would be so much cooler to see!
I live in in the twin citys and now route 55 is the blue line.now they have the green line.minnesota transit is the best
@HaTom009 Sort of. The European equivalent would be a tram, or in Germany, "stadtbahn". This line has one subway station, underground, but most of the line runs either in the streets or on its own, separate tracks.
@Nachtwolf1 what about going back? from MOA to big lake? do we need to pay twice?
This is also a subway? I're not familiar what the commuter trains and subways.
if i travel the northstar rail from big lake station to target field then do i need to pay again from target field to MOA? how much would the fare cost? thanks
If I board from Target Field, and go to Mall Of America from there, would I only pay once, or would I have to pay multiple times for transfering?
I want to make a trip up to msp some time if I get a drivers license and some money haha.

@Nachtwolf1 yeah i searched the trip in metro web sites and it states that fare is $7 which i know the fare from big lake to target field for north star is $7. so the trip from target field to MOA is free with northstar ticket then its AWESOME!!
@HaTom009 But this type of train is called "light rail" in the USA.
@Astroranagun Your ticket from Northstar should work as a transfer to get you on the Hiawatha line to MOA for free. Cost for Northstar to downtown from Big Lake is about $5 or 6, if I remember correctly

@ewinmn You'd pay once. Your ticket can be used as a transfer to a bus.
