When Mel Owen returned in 2018 I honestly thought this would pave the way for Steve to return. Even more so when Hunter arrived, constantly referring to his dad. Guess with Hunter now gone and Mel leaving, Steve is gone forever!
Funny thing is I’m watching yesterday’s episode when Phil is just about to tell hunter how his dad died and this pops up on my subscription list. I’m going to watch this first and see how accurate his description is

I remember this, I recall being dissappointed when I learned that Steve was going to be killed off and thinking to myself I'm not going to watch Eastenders again (but I did for another few years).

I remember watching this, I was only 10 years old at the time, while Phil and Steve were doing the car chase I had to go and sit in the dining room as I couldn't watch the crash as it was too scary. Steve may not have been able to get out his side as there was no room but if the other door was stuck he could have smashed the window and climbed out. This was an epic episode and Steve Owen was a great character.
Compared with me I was only 5 at the time

I know Martin Kemp left EastEnders because he had reached the end of his contract, but did they really have to kill Steve off? Why could they not have done a Dirty Den kind of thing? But then again, this was 2002, the year before Den came back from the dead. But still, Steve could have escaped from the car before it blew and then disappear somewhere. That way they could have left open the possibility of him returning at some point in the future.
He was killed off because Kemp did a deal with ITV and the Eastenders producers were furious they weren't given the chance to negotiate a new contract therefore he was killed off...

Passenger door got stuck when the car collided with the bridge earlier. Also, there are no back doors :) although the windows could have been kicked out easily enough I s'pose.
Still guttered they killed Steve off all these years later.
