  • Who knew that Mahler wrote an overture? Sort of. The Entr'Acte to his opera in the style of Weber, Die Drei Pintos, is as close as he ever got. Who knew that Mahler wrote an opera? Well, he did, and this delightful orchestral movement deserves to be as popular as his larger works. It's simply delightful.

    It's funny to think about all the controversy about people completing Mahler's 10th while basically he did the same with the work of another composer :-) I don't know how in detail it can be compared, but maybe Mahler is a too much valued composer these days so it is more of a challenging task to touch his work. Or Webern doesn't have that much follower anymore, so nobody complains. Thanks for pointing us to this little gem, it surely sounds like Mahler.

    Way back in it’s early days (late’70s...?), our local St. Louis Opera Theater put on a fully staged production of Die Drei Pintos, and I remember people loving it. The company always made a speciality of at least one of the four productions being extremely rare or unconventional, and eventually - new commissions. I think The NY Times review of the production is still available - my strongest memories are of hearing Faith Esham in the first of several roles, and trying to separate the Mahler from the Weber, which didn’t turn out to be hard at all.

    Thanks much, David, for giving this the light of day. One hears a lot of little ditties, both of melody and scoring that rear their heads in his later works.

    A really interesting overture I've recently been listening to by an excellent but relatively overlooked composer is Hendrik Andriessen's 'Chanticlere'. It has his usual clarity and superb technical adroitness with a nice touch of understated humour.

    Heard the Drei Pintos comment in the Mahler v. Bruckner overture, found the Naxos complete recording on streaming, got halfway through, and returned to watch this too. Thanks for answering the question I was wondering ("surely there has to be a better recording than this"). With Popp, Prey, Kurt Moll, the Munich Philharmonic, and Gary Bertini, how has nobody ever reissued that 70s premiere?!? Absolute madness. Surely that production should be a priority for the reissue-fetishizing owners.

    A lovely (re)discovery Dave - and IMO a vast improvement on Weber (for whom I fear I have a massive blind spot!). Just thought of another interesting overture - 'Street Corner' by Alan Rawsthorne.

    I doubt my two suggestions fit the parameters of the category. Ralph Vaughn Williams overture to The Wasps is great, but the composer is ubiquitous and the overture is probably popular. Richard Strauss’ overture to Die Schweigsame Frau, might possibly fit. I consider the opera a masterpiece, but I think I am alone in that opinion. Look, I know one when I hear one.
    I loved this video. I’ll try to search out a recording of the entire opera if one exists.

    Dave… perhaps the overtures to The Two Pedagogues, The Uncle from Boston (!), The Wedding of Camacho, The Return from Abroad - stage works by the young Mendelssohn. Treasures, all. Speaking of treasures… the two dances from Silvana on the Weber - Mahler disc are utterly delightful, too.

    If an intermezzo counts in this series, I'd like to suggest Sibelius' Intermezzo from the Karelia Suite. I am aware that he wrote an actual Karelia Overture, but before now, I had heard only the three-movement suite. I don't know how popular either version of the music is. The Intermezzo theme is from the overture around 2.5 minutes in, but more fleshed out. It's festive and brings a smile to my face, my favorite tune that Sibelius wrote.

    I am new to classical music, I bought this album on sale from a second hand sale. Why is this album referred as Mahler's work? Is this not composed by Weber? Why is Mahler's name not in the album. Can someone enlighten me? Much appreciated.

    • @DavesClassicalGuide
      @DavesClassicalGuide  2 роки тому +1

      It is by Mahler. He was asked to create an opera based on sketches by the then long-dead Weber. He did not want to write an actual overture, so he created this "between the acts" piece in the style of Weber, but the music is all Mahler.
