  • "My vision of life is that everything extends from replicators, which are in practice DNA molecules on this planet. The replicators reach out into the world to influence their own probability of being passed on. Mostly they don't reach further than the individual body in which they sit, but that's a matter of practice, not a matter of principle. The individual organism can be defined as that set of phenotypic products which have a single route of exit of the genes into the future. That's not true of the cuckoo/reed warbler case, but it is true of ordinary animal bodies. So the organism, the individual organism, is a deeply salient unit. It's a unit of selection in the sense that I call a "vehicle".
    There are two kinds of unit of selection. The difference is a semantic one. They're both units of selection, but one is the replicator, and what it does is get itself copied. So more and more copies of itself go into the world. The other kind of unit is the vehicle. It doesn't get itself copied. What it does is work to copy the replicators which have come down to it through the generations, and which it's going to pass on to future generations. So we have this individual replicator dichotomy. They're both units of selection, but in different senses. It's important to understand that they are different senses".

      Victoria Sage One certainly could interpret the bells as heralding in scientific truths I think it's a good way to interpret them rather than the rusty old dundane reasons religion gives to hem, I like it, & this great talk by Richard.

    What's with the bells??? There's no other video on UA-cam of Dawkins explaining this principle so plainly and concisely. And I'm having to fight the godawful, dissonant, arhythmic clanging of those awful bells. What a relief it is when they finally stop!

      I think he planed it that way... Kind of a Judo move.... the bells intended as a to call to prayer, and to show the Church's dominance over society, as well as their omnipresence..... are cleverly used to announce the Explanation of the code of life, and the Glory of Empiricism

    Why the bells? Ok, the person who edited this video is making a futile attempt to impose what they think is a clever, subtle touch here (perhaps there's a religious symbolic flip of the finger, maybe an attempt to infuse the film with an air of Oxfordian authority or just a plain parasitical attempt to steal some airtime - who knows/cares?). You really didn't need to bother mate! It's irritating, pointless, stupid, childish and distracts the viewer from the far more interesting vision, eloquence and teaching of this wonderful mind!!!

    Thanks for posting. Dawkins is progress. I admire the guy pretty much indeed. The conception of religion, tho I respect those who follow it. Does nothing but fuck with progress itself. Ask the medieval age.
    *Regarding the BELLS, (sorry to say this and waste time of yours with this bullshit), all of those who commented on how they were annoyed with the noise, I, as well as most, came to find questions and thoughts about the talk itself and u complaining about fucking bells? Shame on u.

    behavior is because there are genes which wants us to behave? Teleologic and confiration bias at work. lel behavior is, because of the fact, that we are defined by a markov blanket aka strive for reducing free energy/ local entropy as a dissipative structure aka because we are alive.

    So we are just our genes...?
    I am just a vessel for my genes to replicate...
    And Dawkins wonders why he is so disliked.

    • @myroseaccount
      @myroseaccount 7 років тому

      This level of genetic determinism is simply wrong, and Dawkins has done a disservice with his writing such that many people now believe everything about human beings, including our intelligence and our behaviour is determined by our genes. This mistaken and misunderstood view which people have taken from the metaphor of the Selfish Gene and much of the nonsense espoused in Sociobiology is leading, as people like Gould, Rose and Lewontin have long pointed out, to unpleasant and unsavoury views that have bedeviled and distorted Biology for decades.
      People like Robert Sapolsky have spoken out strongly about how genetic determinism and "reductionism", particularly with regard to behaviour and intelligence is simply wrong and dangerous.
      This is why people like Stephen Rose dislike Dawkins's use of metaphor and how it has led to so much misunderstanding. Dawkins should spend less time worrying about the existence of God and more on eradicating some of the unfortunate Memes that his writing has fostered.
      So quite frankly DEAL with that....

    • @cephalopod7300
      @cephalopod7300 3 роки тому

      You should actually read The Selfish Gene before dismissing your caricature of it

    • @myroseaccount
      @myroseaccount 3 роки тому

      @@cephalopod7300 I have read it and some of the technical work of the scientists like Hamilton and Maynard Smith whose work the Selfish Gene popularizes. Dawkins himself has admitted that the title has been misunderstood and he would now call it the eternal gene. The idea of Memes introduced in the book has little basis in science beyond its' use as a metaphor.
      I also referenced the work and opinion of serious scientists all of whom have taken issue with Dawkins and his writing. This is not a caricature but straightforward critique widely shared by many scientists since the book was first published.
      At the moment there is now a burgeoning online industry in commentary and opinion (mostly of from the Libertarian RIght) based on misunderstandings of Dawkins's work. This has led to old, racist and eugenicist arguments and justifications marching back towards respectability with ill deserved confidence.
      Given the history of Biology and its gross misuses, Eugenics is just one abomination, Dawkins should be focused on how such misunderstands are used to reinforce and justify prejudice and racism. That is far more important than telling Christians about the absurdity of the virgin birth.

    Consciousness precedes lifeforms. The conscious life energy evolves until it finds God. Mankind is the final stage before that life energy can find some truth to this problem it is in. God has taken the form of man lived with him and showed him the way to the truth the light and the all conscious. Atheism does not understand the path of the saints. Reincarnation is the only way to comprehend the evolution of consciousness in forms.
