Sad but many adults are being
Diagnosised with ADHD and put on Adderal that is very difficult to wean off of. The side effects and withdrawal can be very traumatic.
If a person gets a stress leave from work due to traumatic experience the doctors are quick to diagnose and medicated with SSRI or whatever. If they do not go along with Doctors plan then the Insurance company for the company they work either may not give Disability Pay.

In the olden days children did not go to school until they were 7 or 8 years of age. If you wait until a child is developmentslly ready, it will take them less effort to master reading, writing, snd arithmetic. Boys, in particular, need more time. Let them be boys! You can teach them to follow multi-step directions through chores, sports activities, outdoor activities. Get them outdoors hiking, fishing, and adk them questions that require them to carefully observe the world around them.

Ì was homeschooled by loving Christian parents. After being Diagnosed at 9 with ADHD and dyslexia I started a low dose of Adderall I remember that day as the first time I could truly focus. My mother was a qualified teacher. And tried multiple ways to help before this. It was the best thing that happened to me I took it till I finished LPN school then learned to cope in other ways when I stopped. I think it is overdiagnosed however this is my story.

I have a 7 year old daughter with autism and her developmental pediatrician diagnosed her with ADHD at her last visit a couple months ago. Her doctor wanted to prescribe ADHD medication. I told her I wanted to look into other options and try a more natural approach. My daughter’s developmental pediatrician told me that with some kids diagnosed with ADHD benefited from taking fish oil and melatonin. I went home and did a lot of research and I started her on fish oil daily and 1 mg of melatonin at night. I also went a step further and removed all foods that had any colored dye because I started noticing that she would get very impulsive after eating certain foods with dye. Since removing foods with dyes from her diet and giving her fish oil and melatonin she is calm, she can focus. Her speech has improved. She sleeps better and her behaviors that she was having a couple months ago decreased a lot. I can take her into stores and other public places and I don’t have the same anxiety that I had a couple months ago. A couple months ago my daughter would elope and she was very impulsive and her behaviors made it difficult to take her anywhere.

Similar experience. We tried RX for self harm...honestly it made it worse. He was just tired and would choke on his drool and keep trying to self harm. We tried CBD after that and it's helped a ton. As he hit puberty we noticed some shifts in behavior including more ADHD. It got so bad we considered RX but I swore I would try caffeine before I would do that. So we did. Little bit of green tea most mornings has really been a huge help! We just have to make sure he drinks it in thirds because he chugged it before and was high anxiety. But otherwise it's really helped. And yes ruling out most additives and such is important. ❤ We also take an organic B vitamin spray most days. It's low dose so won't do damage to the kidneys....as I find many supplements are too high of dose and will harm kidneys over time with unnecessary waste product.

@11:05 how can we compare? It’s not difficult if you’ve lived with ADHD. When you’re constantly misplacing items. When you do things without remembering that you’ve done them. When you frequently get lost in thought while someone else is speaking. When you struggle to complete things by deadlines that others did not struggle with. When you can’t seem to care about your personal life because you’ve poured all your energy to focusing at work. When you are constantly running behind. And when you have spent YEARS trying to fix those things. It’s very easy for those of us with ADHD to compare. What’s NOT easy though, is to understand what it feels like to those who do not experience it. And for anyone who wants adderall to stop being the only option - you need to first recognize that ADHD is a real condition.

Hand claps all around!!!!! I am reading my own story back to me. Not to mention it causes relational stress with spouses and kids. It's so frustrating to hear stories calling what I go through on a daily basis a "social construct" Really? Because my husband doesn't struggle with these things. He's on electonics/media more than I AM. I wish I could leave the house with less than 3 bags because I'm so terrified I'm going to leave something important behind. In school, I developed a habit of ALWAYS looking at the desk I left because I KNEW I was highly likely to forget something. I loose my phone as soon as I get home. I've lost earbuds, clothes, shoes, documents. Before I got engaged, my husband gave me a 'practice' ring so that I could get used to keeping up with it. 😢
Watching this video, I'm afraid the stigma about what real struggle for a lot of people will just be dismissed.

I will add that the medication is just a tool to help. It's not a perfect solution, but it does help. Without it, I'm all over the place. It puts my brain back in line and helps me finish the task I started instead of running around trying to do 10 things at once.

@@amyjones6110 The other part that's missing here, is a lot of kids are given meds and not given help to understand what is going on, so they can learn how to build structures around them that can help them thrive, adults the same thing. You need structures around you, medication can help you while get those in place, but he in an earlier episode said well this gets tied to identity. Man, if your brain is making you act a certain way, how is that NOT part of your identity? Denying it is to say these things don't exist.

My youngest child was difficult in every class. I was asked to allow them to test him for ADHD. I told them they could test him, but they needed to know I would never medicate him. I didn't allow him to have sugar of any kind or anything with red food dye. I also asked the teachers not to keep him in at recess as punishment and encouraged them to make him run laps instead. I also worked with him to learn to have self-control. He was also sent to take the test for gifted classes, and that helped by providing more interesting work. It turns out when active boys are bored they cause more disruptions.

I loved your first interview with him so much so that I personally reached out to him. I am a mental health counselor. I agree that ADHD is overdiagnosed and while I’m against medications for it, especially in children, I very much disagree that it doesn’t exist. I would totally agree with him if I hadn’t experienced it as a parent. He obviously has not. My daughter perfectly fits the ADHD diagnosis. I knew something was off since she was age 3. It wasn’t a teacher who pointed it out. In fact, I’m the only one who ever diagnosed her and it took me years to realize it was ADHD. She was never medicated. My next 2 children (boys) were normal. Now my daughter has 3 sons and the oldest has the same issues she did but worse. He is 6. We knew way before school age. It’s absolutely exhausting to raise kids like this and as a counselor, I know their behavior is abnormal. Both of them also had traumatic births and multiple health issues. I think the ADHD is related to their poor health. Some type of mutation or deficiency possibly? But definitely not an issue of too much tech (I wasn’t that kind of parent) or neglect/trauma. It is real. Rather than saying it’s not real, let’s focus on figuring out the root cause and treating that.

ADHD meds are way over used. My parents did foster care with teens and I saw this first hand. But please don’t disregard that they can improve quality of life for some people including myself. From the time I was a small child I willingly ate very healthy diet because if I was not, I was a complete mental mess. At six years old I happily gave up sugar and other triggering foods because even at that age, I recognized that I could not think or see straight if I ate them. I was able to jump on the trampoline and run around the yard between school subjects because I was homeschooled. I also had limited screens. I actually personally avoided getting a smart phone until my 20’s. All theses things just took the edge off my learning disabilities, sensory and visual processing issues and ADHD symptoms. I still struggled so bad with executive function and focus. It was painful for me to see people who could barely sleep and eat junk could function better than me. The front of my brain would get numb and tingly when I tried to do something mentally challenging. I tried medicine because despite all my other measures I was still struggling. My quality of life has greatly improved. I can do more than one or two mentally challenging things a day now. I am sleeping better and my spacial awareness and sensory processing issues have greatly improved. Social situation are less stressful because my eyes can focus enough to read faces. I could keep going on how my life has improved with no side effects at this time. Stimulants are very powerful drugs that can be miss-used easily, but that does not mean that some people to benefit from them.

Allie, thank you for these two episodes with Dr. Roger McFillin!
I am so happy that someone with knowledge and experience has come to reveal the truth about all the diagnosis of children's behaviour and how quickly they are pushed into taking medication they really don't need for the majority of cases!!
As a former teacher, who had to closely work with chldren that had behavioural problems, I have learnt that the environment they grow in and/or parents's ways to bringing them up are root to most of the children behavioural problem, that can be corrected but need a different approach.
I loved how "common sense" was mentioned too, something that is not very abundant. Dependence on medications is a devil's chain that seems to begin in the belief of lies we are told, that is why I love working with teenagers and children, because they ask questions to understand the world, to find the truth and we, as adults have the moral obligation and duty before God, to teach them truth.
I never hear about Dr. Roger McFiller but i am praying the youtube channel gets back and running to spread truth that need be told. Actually, the fact that the yt channel has been "closed"... the more the reason to listen to Dr. Roger and do our research, be independent thinkers using wisdom and common sense! God bless you!!

Yeh that would be classic dunning-krueger there. The problem is this isn't black and white. YES there are many people (adults and children) who may be diagnosed with ADHD, put on meds and/or CBT, but may be wrongly diagnosed. There are for more who actually do have ADHD and do not realize there is hope or help, and so don't show up in front of a Doctor for diagnosis.
Overgeneralizing this as "ALL ADHD diagnosis are wrong" Is just as bad as saying "ALL ADHD diagnosis are right". Every person has unique genetics, and biochemistry to a degree, but the way people use his statements to be dismissive of people who have actual problems, is stigmatizing and hurting these people that need compassion, time, and understanding.

I'm concerned that some viewers of this are going to get the wrong idea of what ADHD is and isn't and extend the stigma even more. Do some research and listen to many angles. This doesnt just effect kids. Adult ADHD is very real. It impares relationship, jobs, money and habits. Many adults with ADHD have a history or overspending, divorce, drug abuse, depression, etc when they dont seek help to deal with their executive function impairment. We deal with being labeled as lazy and unreasonable just for how different we are. There are many tools to manage ADHD symptoms like CBT, non stimulant medication, hypnosis that can all be used in conjunction with medication. Including slow release medication that does not have the "high" of amphetamines. But these things werent mentioned as options from this Dr.
If someone in your life is struggling with things that the world labels as normal, dont dismiss it.
Also, i cant consign to it being caused just by trauma or abuse. I was raised in a very loving Christian home. My mom cooked most of our meals and i was only allowed to have a soda about once a week as a kid. I wasnt hyperactive and made good grades, but remebering to grab my lunch box or waiting until the last moment to tell my mom that i needed something for school the next day at 9 pm the night before was pretty common.

Meanwhile, we and his teacher were working hard to help him learn. He was diagnosed halfway through first grade. We opted for medication . He started the medication and he became available for learning ! Along with it, there were modifications to his learning experience , a separate room , etc, etc. He was also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Eventually, the recommendation made to his psychiatrist read like a short version of the diagnostic criteria for what we now call high functioning Autism. The school psychologist suggested to us that we read up on Aspergers syndrome ( this was in the late 90s). I did, and it was like reading about my son! The doctor, however, refused to change his diagnosies . We ended up moving to another state. The first time he saw his new psychiatrist, he was diagnosed with ( at that time) Aspergers. What a relief! A teacher told us this was good news because educational interventions for this kind of disorder are different from those for ADHD. We also have a daughter who is on the spectrum. She was first diagnosed with Pervasise Developmental Disorder when she was in preschool . PDD was just another way of saying Autism Apectrum Disorder.
ADHD and these other neurological disorders may be over diagnosed , but they are real. They are often treated with the same drugs and others.
I remember the day that I was sure that there was more to my son's problems than just inattention and hyperactivity. He was about 8 or 9, and I was watching him play outside. I was inside watching him through the window. He didn't know I was watching. It just struck me how different he was from other boys, in an odd way. I say that with complete acceptance and love. My son will soon be 29. He lives with us. We don't know if he'll ever live completely on his own. He's very bright, though he has learning disabilities. He gets by on his strengths. He is hugely creative and can do amazing things with puppet building and performance. He builds many of his puppets and sells some of them. He makes videos and edits them on his Apple. He does computer animation, too.
He still has to take several different medications. He has never become an "addict." His sister also takes medication, though not ADHD meds. They have never helped her.
With all this, I mean to say that every person is different. We also know it is genetic. You can observe these traits in yourself and other family members. Why were they not diagnosed? I can think of several reasons. Maybe some had some of the traits, but they weren't unmanageable . Many had ADHD but were made to feel like they were just bad children. I also believe there are more cases with more severity because, as Ken Ham from AiG would explain , our world is becoming more and more corrupted by the sin curse. The world is not getting better, not evolving, it is and we are becoming more degraded . Right down to our DNA.

Keep in mind, there are non-stimulant ADHD medication options. My 2nd grade son started a low dose of strattera a few weeks ago, and it’s been a game changer. I am a licensed mental health professional. We have safety and structure in our home. He is very active in multiple sports. He attends a wonderful Christian school. Yet his hyperactive and impulsive behavior (likely a combination of genetic and having been born 6 weeks premature) is so intense (and sometimes plain dangerous), that he needs just a little boost of norepinephrine in his brain to make his own behaviors manageable for him. He is relieved to be on it, and has had no negative side effects.

I appreciate that you pointed out that childhood trauma can mimic ADHD. I adopted siblings who had experienced trauma. The 2 older ones have multiple diagnoses. Luckily, some professional along the way pointed out to me that their attention problems was not true ADHD but rather hypervigilance. Neither of them was able to finish high school. My oldest couldn't even sit still long enough to complete the pre-assessment for an online GED program! There was only one time when a doctor prescribed medication for my son's attention issues, but when I found out it was a controlled substance, I said no way!

I know I'm way late on this episode, but I just wanted to chime in as well. I had such a hard time focusing on anything when in elementary school to the point to where my mom set up an Individual Education Plan so I didn't have to take timed tests within the time allotted for them. As I got older, I discovered a love of music and that really helped me out a lot because I was able to use it like white noise and it alloted me to focus on my homework and that was one of the many areas I struggled in. I still use music - and also podcasts - now more than 20 years later in the same way. I honestly do believe that I have some kind of attention deficit issue, but I am so glad my parents never took me anywhere to be treated or diagnosed because I learned how I learn and focus best by going through the struggle of not being able to focus when in school. If any of my future kids have an issue like I did, I defibrillator won't be putting them on any kind of meds because they are so harmful and can cause so many issues

I thought this part 2 to better capture real concerns in this disease area. Roger brought up a good point about ruling out other disease. DSM clearly states ADHD has to be diagnosed ONLY after all other mental disorders have been ruled out. That is currently not going on in the community, where they often prescribe stimulants first and ask questions later.

I was pushed by the school to put my daughter on meds when she was about 9. I tried it out for about 6 months and it didn’t seem to make much of a difference so I took her off. A few years later she was still struggling in school and I thought about trying it again. Well I was in bed thinking about it the radio my husband left on got a little louder and a program came on talking about the negative side effects of the medication. I took that as a sign from God not to put her on it. We had to help her find other ways to get through school.

In general I'm sympathetic to that opinion*, but there is a hypocrisy that most listeners may miss: do you as an adult use stimulants? (Think first caffeine, second nicotine.) I myself do take caffeine, but it would probably be better to abstain so to avoid tolerance, so that if and when I really do need a stimulant boost my body will respond well to the drug, used as a drug, as an exception and not as a lifestyle. (*: Full disclosure: for my livelihood I analyze clinical trial data for a drug company interested in making and marketing ADHD drugs.)

ADHD a "social construct"? Bull Shi... Perhaps you want to give it a different name, but it's a real thing. I wish I could show you video of my six year old daughter on Wed at her 5-7 year old dance class. There were 11 students there. 10 of which were respectably looking up at their teacher/dance instructor and following instructions (for the most part) and then my daughter rolling around on the floor off in her own world, participating with the group only occasionally. If that is not executive function deficit then what is? Just how much dance do you think she is really going to learn? And it's not that she doesn't want to do it, she just can't!!!! She can't help herself. Doing dance class was her idea, not mine.
Last year in kindergarten after one month she was expelled from full-day school. She was simply too disruptive to the class. Too much to handle. She had to have someone hold her hand and walk her EVERY TIME the class transitioned from place to another. She has had and will continue to have additional special ed help, perhaps indefinitely.
I'm not pro on putting kids, my kids, on drugs. But to call this condition a "social construct" is VERY disrespectful to those that deal with the condition. It is social blasphemy!

I was hoping that this would turn around, but sadly it didn't. My son is 8 and was diagnosed at 4. We were reccomended by 2 psychologist to start him on meds who use meds as a last result because his impulsiveness was so bad. I was hesitant because he was 4. Then we had a week where it was unsafe for him or us. We then started meds and it has literally saved our lives. This past year we tested him again and he tested the highest you can for ADHD even with him on meds. He was also found out to have a mood disorder. If he doesn’t have ADHD meds, he cannot function in life at all! So, I don’t agree with this doctor unless he is briefly referring to my son as the 1%.
I found out as an adult I have ADD/ADHD. Sure, I made it through school fine. I had to be off meds for a while and ended up taking anxiety meds in place of it. So i find it contradictory for him to go on how anxiety and depression is real, but not ADHD. I'm able to actually process issues better on meds this way. I am also on a non-stimulant, which he didn't address.

All the people offended that he is saying ADHD isn't real are totally missing what he said - ADHD is not an actual discrete diagnosis. The symptoms of ADHD are real - trouble concentrating, hyperactivity, etc. - but they are caused by something. Find the underlying cause and see if it's fixable (like through diet). Learn to view hyperactivity and other "symptoms" as strengths that can be harnessed for good. Train yourself to improve concentration and focus.

Adderall is literally methamphetamine without the "meth". The two are virtually the same thing. It's just a cleaner version of meth. I'm not proud of it but I've done both and I know. It's the same thing and NO ONE "needs" to be prescribed amphetamines for any reason. Also, when you look at the prescription bottle of someone who has generic Adderall, it just says, "Amphetamine".
    Look it up.
Also just about every person I've ever known that got hooked on methamphetamine as an adult was prescribed Adderall as a child. 🤔
    Correlation?
People just seem to want to believe that the two are completely different because of all the stigma around meth and doctors want to justify prescribing it so they try to ensure parents that they're two totally different things. It's the same thing with heroin and prescription opiates and doctors prescribing methadone and suboxone. They're all narcotics and they all provide the same euphoric effects that all opioids provide.

A lot of mental health issues can actually be resolved this way, the only issue is finding a doctor who would be willing to prefer to look into the simpler, cheaper fix of adjusting diet and even lifestyle rather than leap to prescribing expensive drugs the medical community still doesn't understand. I'm not saying these serious issues don't exist, but it seems deficiencies do a great job of mimicking these serious problems and many doctors don't care to get to the real cause and identification of their patients' problems.

Yes it is over diagnosed but it is real and the proper meds are very beneficial. Also i believe the diagnosis should include nutrition neurologist and maybe but not nessarily a psychological assessment be in order. What is more concerning to me is the ssri meds these doctors hand out like candy to children and adults alike. They just came out with a study that these meds are poison. Please do a deep dive into that.

Lot of ignorance here Allie, you are using minorities and one offs, exceptions to the rule and you compare yourself with the entire population which is irrelevant. Its not a case of "well I had a focus issue and got over it so that means anyone can" Every case is different, literally every case & each should have a tailored & thorough evaluation by a psychiatrist and only a psychiatrist.

Yes, that's quite a bias. Since she didn't experience ADHD, it must not exist.

@@allieoneal2033Yes, unfortunately some of those who call themselves devout Christians, have difficulty understanding that mental illness or related issues even exist, let alone can be successfully treated or managed by medical and allied health professionals. It appears to be more prevalent in the more conservative or fundamentalist circles. The answer for them is never medical, it's prayer, it's changing your attitude, "growing up" or strengthening your spiritual walk etc. There is a distinct irony in the fact they are fearful of the medically intangible, we can't "see" mental illness the way we can see most physical manifestations of a disease yet they worship, respect, "follow", obey and prioritise something completely intangible.

@@sharonhoward884 it's frustrating because it doesn't have to be one or the other. For example, I find that starting my morning with God often means I have a measure of better focus that day. I think that there can be a spiritual component. However, this kind of thing absolutely can't just be blamed on a spiritual or moral failing. Yes, kids who spend more time outdoors have better outcomes, but unlike this man claims, that's not a cure.

I feel like this guest is one of those people who prey on desperate people who need help but have low trust in institutions. I'm sure he has programs and supplements he makes money on, but he accuses the drug companies of the same thing.
ADHD diagnoses have been around a long time... before smart phones and iPads. That can't be the entire reason.
