People talk Crosby, people talk McGuinn, people talk Hillman...I just wish more people realized and understood the greatness and influence of Gene Clark and the Byrds. They sure did.
I think as the years have gone by, Gene's work has become more and more appreciated. He was the most talented member of the original band and his recorded legacy confirms that. Its funny really that i think time has also shown Hillman to probably be the second most talented, albeit with a chip on his shoulder but he has mellowed as the years have gone by. Roger needed the Byrds, and i wouldn't downplay his major contribution through his groundbreaking 12 string work , however post Byrds he has not made one really decent album , and i know as i;ve bought them. Crosby great harmony singer , but thats it , his songwriting imho is average at best.
First heard this covered by Dave Edmunds on a brilliant compilation of his music. John Fogerty wrote it -- loved his version the great "Blue Moon Swamlp" -- but love this version the best. Gene's is incomparable -- his voice, his arrangements. And Carla was the perfect roots/country duet partner for him in the '80s.
Carla Olson was born and raised in Austin, TX. I've known her since she was in high school. She's a good person and a good friend. She's also a good record producer. She produced two of John Paul Jones (yes that JPJ) CD's. Carla and Kathy Valentine were in a band in Austin before they moved to California. The rest is history.
Gene Clark was a founding father of "folk rock" as a key member of The Byrds and their best songwriter. After the Byrds, he also influenced the birth of country-rock through his work with country roots artists Dillard & Clark. In the latter part of his career, he teamed briefly with Carla Olson--formerly of The Textones-- for a brilliant album called "So Rebellious a Lover" The song performed on this video appeared on that album....HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
This was the album -- "So Rebellious A LOver" -- that introduced me to Gene Clark. So many great songs, so much great work with Carla Olson. Such a gifted musician and songwriter. Wish there were a live performance of these two singing "Through The Morning, Through The Night."
8-2020 .Enjoyed The Great Post ! Its good to know John Fogerty wrote the Song.....Goodness, Grace Happiness and good Health ! ol man way down in TX...Angels and Singing !
@MrBruceBarham Carla is a true singer & has been around the block for over 30 years........dating back to the 70's. has played in venue's throughout her career, a laid back performerm but a solid person and true singer to say the least
I like this, beofe ilost everything to a fire, my fav album was Gene with the dillards, songs were great, both albums, nice to hear this , never heard of the gal,,glad we have youtube
This is more folk than country, very good cover. John Fogerty's live version is my favorite. Gene was the best songwriter in the Byrds, too bad they could not keep it together longer.
"Dillard and Clark" seamlessly blended bluegrass, country and rock and was done in 1969, a full 10 years before JD Crowe and the New South gained great acclaim (and hatred)for doing the same thing. Just listen to their rendition of "Crying Holy". This is a lovely country themed rendition of Fogarty's great rock a billy tune.
When Gene left The Byrds...it was the beginning of the end. He was the only one of the Byrds who had a true male lead vocal voice. He was also eye candy for legions of female fans. But all that pales in comparison to his talent as a songwriter. Sadly, the divorce from The Byrds ended up bad for Gene too. The music industry couldn't figure out what to do with him and a lot of his GREAT stuff remained unmarketed, and hence, obscure. BTW I would pay megabucks to get a DVD of the full concert!!!
Gene's own behavior and constant drinking were also major problems for his career. Didn't stop him from writing great songs though. One after another right up to the end.
Rossm3838 I’ve shared with others, and will with you, Gene pretty clearly had some significant mental issues. I’m not an expert, but even in times when he was seemingly sober, he showed signs of schizophrenia. I’m not trying to explain away his substance abuse issues, his unreliability or his terrible track record as a human being over chunks of his life. But if you’ve ever really watched footage of Gene playing, and noticed him go to some far-off place with his eyes, like he’s the only guy in the room...that’s not for the crowd. He’s looking for aliens in the back, and his next song may be about them
@@TR-yi8up His awful track record as a human being? A schizophrenic? Right. I see. He did write some incredibly beautiful songs, this is not one of them.
@@christiannoble1166 John forgery wrote this one and gene makes it his own Bob Dylan told gene that he bob would have been proud of having written Spanish guitar.
All of Gene's recordings with Doug Dillard are available on a single cd which is actually very inexpensive. "So Rebelious A Lover" has been recently rereleased on CD as well. Both are nicely done and well worth it.
Genes vocal range and knack for singing a solid melody made harmony fun I bet, and carla does great...Im not familiar with Carla Olsen...what is her history???/

@McGarVision Don't be so sure. A lot of these bands don't even look at youtube. And even to the extent that they do, I think they are more apt to look at video clips their own material.
Gene explained that he didn't leave because of flying. He inferred that he left because of the company he was flying with. The internal petty squabbles and the jealousy from the group that as the main song writer he was receiving the royalties. His guitar playing was taken away, his lead sing role was taken away and fewer and fewer of his songs appeared on the next album. Why wouldn't you leave?
I have been listening to this performance and actually like it far better than John Fogarty's, and Fogarty wrote the song! Shows you what a great song can do. Kudos to John and Gene is missed so badly.

Their unique voices blend wonderfully. Neither Gene nor Carla has yet to get the attention each deserves.
One of the most under-appreciated talents.

Reminds me of Ian & Sylvia's style of duet singing.
