      That really goes for a lot of more modern FPS (post-Doom games, though in Doom the chain-gun made a decent semi-auto sniper - if you did a two round burst both shots were always accurate), you only want to "spray and pray" when a single/several fast targets are in your face and you have no other choice

    I remember renting this game in the 90s, like you said, incredible atmosphere from a game of that era. In an interview (can't remember the source) a Probe directive said that in the past they were having lots of multiple games/ports being developed at once and in this game they learned from their mistakes, shifting all the studio efforts in order to make the best possible experiece for one game

      @oscarjimenezgarrido7591 3 роки тому +2

      I'm actually frankly surprised at the numerous bits on the video where Probe is referred to, quite matter-of-factly as if there was a general consensus about it, as a crappy developer. Honestly, both their original ip games for 8 bit computers, like Trantor and Savage, and also their works based on licences, like Out Run Europa, were widely loved and renowned amongst fans and critics alike. Even their work during the 90s, after their acquisition by Acclaim, was way more hit than miss, with many huge hits, both commercial and critic-wise, - T2, Alien3, Alien Trilogy, Die Hard Trilogy, Extreme G, to name a few - making up for the misses - which could be blamed, more often than not, on poor upper management and rushed development cycles more than a lack of talent.

    Holy shit, these games honestly look really cool. I've always loved the aesthetic of the early 3D graphics era of PC and console games. I think they look just as cool, if not cooler than modern games. I kind of see them as having a different artstyle, like Impressionist or Minimalist or something. They're much more interesting looking than hyper-realistic games.

      I mean you're wrong, but feel free to have that opinion lol. I played this game when it was new and I didn't find the graphics anything better than "good enough." Great sound design for the time, though. Graphics don't make up for bad gameplay, but modern games are absolutely better in just about every aspect, in addition to their graphics. This is just objectively true.

    Being a big fan of the Aliens movies, I was so excited about playing this one, and although I liked it in many ways, I preferred Aliens Vs Predator on the Atari Jaguar, simply because of the atmosphere of the game. The soundtrack on Alien trilogy simply takes the tension out of it, as opposed to the Atari game, where you only hear the humming of the power generators throughout the game. I also prefer the Atari version where you can roam freely on the entire base instead of this level to level design. I almost crapped my pants a thousand times while playing AvP on the Jaguar, whereas Alien Trilogy was more like a river cruise, where you don't really feel nervous about what's coming around the corner.

    Two Things:
    1) Seeming that this game was released a month after Duke Nukem 3D Episode I, I wonder if 3D Realms were influenced by Alien Trilogy to create Lunar Apocalypse as a shout out; coincidently, both the facehugger and Protozoid Slimer attack design obstructs the field of view. Full version of Duke 3D was not completed until May 1996.

    The work on the atmosphere in this game (sound effects and soundtrack) was really amazing : creepy and stressful as it should.

    I didn't recognize this game at first until the side by side with the PS1 version. Realizing i have actually played this game on the PS1. I remember the gameplay being good enough. What i really liked was the atmosphere of the game. Play this in a dark room. Good stuff.

      Finished the game on the Saturn about a month ago (I replay it every once in a while) and it still holds up really well. Fantastic, underrated FPS on the system. Nails the Alien atmosphere really well in my opinion.

    You mentioned the Saturn’s poor conversion of Doom. Saturn Doom was programmed by veteran programmer Jim Bagley. I attended a question and answer session with him presenting. He explained that he had Saturn Doom running brilliantly. My memory is hazy at this point but if I recall Jim was told by John Romero that he had to code the engine a specific way. Jim explained that he wouldn’t be able to get the performance that way but was told it was that or nothing. Totally bonkers.

    I owned the Saturn version back in high school and played the living shit out of it. Didn’t play the PS1 version until a few years ago and was surprised how much the lighting improved things. Better atmosphere and the sections where you needed your shoulder lamp to see we’re very tense.

    I played it a lot on the Saturn back in the 90's. I also played the PS1 and even checked the DOS versions, they are similar enough with one another, even being clunky sometimes, I really enjoy the atmosphere and the overall gameplay, it still gives me chills when a scary alien monster appears silently from nowhere.

    I noticed the sounds in this game are leagues ahead of the PS1 port - have a listen to the shotty from each version. The Saturn shotty audio is crystal clear.
