    Losing the Mansell Moustache will have upset the balance of the car so was obvious he would crash eventually.

    Was this actually a race? Because Mansell sure thought so...

    • @peterbrownless
      @peterbrownless 5 років тому +57

      It was a "demonstration" race and was scripted that Mansell would win. The accident occurred because Alonso had lost track of the fact he was on the last lap and thus did not get on the gas out of the last corner. Mansell had expected Alonso to be accelerating out of the corner as normal and was caught out by the slow car.

      Alo did nothing wrong here, and neither a mistake in driving through the chicane. He is not even slowing down from his prev. (slow) speed in the chicane. Mansell just drove into his (Alo) back, to be honest. And that's it. Alo is on the right / outta side of the track, = not closing any door either.

Alonso backed off on seeing the flag and mansel having been out of practice for a few years didnt expect him to back off so quickly, On speeking to paul later that night i commented that it was an expensive weekend as paul also blew an engine on a 2 seater. This is what happens when you don't go fullout. It screws up the timing of your moves, and the people you are "racing" with, hasn't a clue on how careful you are going to be. Slowing down changes the downforce, but how much? You don't know, you don't usually go 90%. My guess is that lack of downforce likely caused a "push-loose" condition. the car understeers in, due to the to lack of downforce. When the front tires get mechanical grip, the stab of the throttle caused either an oversteer, or a spinning the rear tires which changed the expected launch out of the corner. Any of these could have happened to either of both cars, at times that were unexpected.

    I would say its the car in front fault as you could see Mansell was slightly turning left to avoid a car that slowed down on the exit of the turn, whereas normally you always accelerate out of a corner, one was slowing and Mansell driving normally and to me wasn't his fault the other car suddenly slowed.

      In those era, literally every workers on the track needs to have big cojones, even the flag waver.
      If you go way back to the 80s-90s, the flag waver is WAY more closer to the cars than in here, like they're literally in the side of the car passing by.
      I'm surprised that no one ever got hit at all during those times.

      Yes. Short shifting up the hill too. Look at the poor passengers head bobbing around. At full speed it would probably have come off! A couple of laps in his eyes are saying "ok, make it stop now!"
      The drivers are superhuman to withstand those forces for up to two hours and return lap after lap within tenths of a second. (And in Nigel's day with real gear levers!)

  • @LightningArt71

    Quite clearly mix ups like this can happen when drivers are only pretending to race. The script was that Mansell was supposed to overtake Alonso. Alonso only realised they were on on the final corner of the last lap and slowed on the exit. Ol' Nige didn't really have to floor it out of the corner... Just glad the passengers were okay. Certainly got their money's worth.

    Nigel was definitely going easy on his passenger, way more so than Martin Brundle was on Murray Walker in the McLaren 2 seater.
    Martin was driving close to 95% flat out with Murray, and Nigel was driving probably at around 60% or less. So yes he got some experience and learn what it felt like to be in an F1 car under acceleration and braking and some minor g going round corners.. but it wasn't anywhere near the experience that Murray had.
