We had the privilege of being in the grandstand overlooking the crash, it really was a great day's entertainment and the drivers weren't messing about!
This is what happens when you don't go fullout. It screws up the timing of your moves, and the people you are "racing" with, hasn't a clue on how careful you are going to be. Slowing down changes the downforce, but how much? You don't know, you don't usually go 90%. My guess is that lack of downforce likely caused a "push-loose" condition. the car understeers in, due to the to lack of downforce. When the front tires get mechanical grip, the stab of the throttle caused either an oversteer, or a spinning the rear tires which changed the expected launch out of the corner. Any of these could have happened to either of both cars, at times that were unexpected.
Murray Walker as always fantastic! P.S. I would form competition with all ex F1 drivers and they would drive old F1 cars, from their era. Cars would be built all over again, historic ones wouldn't be used. And of course, Murray Walker would be commentating. Cheers from Croatia!
I would say its the car in front fault as you could see Mansell was slightly turning left to avoid a car that slowed down on the exit of the turn, whereas normally you always accelerate out of a corner, one was slowing and Mansell driving normally and to me wasn't his fault the other car suddenly slowed.

Yes. Short shifting up the hill too. Look at the poor passengers head bobbing around. At full speed it would probably have come off! A couple of laps in his eyes are saying "ok, make it stop now!" The drivers are superhuman to withstand those forces for up to two hours and return lap after lap within tenths of a second. (And in Nigel's day with real gear levers!)
Quite clearly mix ups like this can happen when drivers are only pretending to race. The script was that Mansell was supposed to overtake Alonso. Nigel was definitely going easy on his passenger, way more so than Martin Brundle was on Murray Walker in the McLaren 2 seater.
