I eat sweet potatoes, spring rolls, protein bars, and sushi are some of my favorites! Fruits like peaches, apples, bananas, and strawberries are also fantastic and are much cheaper than airport food!
For my upcoming trip I have an eight- hour layover at Washington, DC Dulles and discovered that there is a reasonably priced vegan restaurant 10 minutes away. I plan on bringing breakfast cookies for the red-eye flight, then taking an Uber to the restaurant, eating lunch, and getting a sandwich to go. That will be my dinner on the second red-eye flight. With two flights from hell in 24 hours, healthy vegan food is must just to stay sane!
Can you make a video on good vegan food to pack when traveling internationally? I want to stay healthy but know that customs doesn’t allow produce so I’m looking for some ideas of what to pack!
cicishort98 as long as it isn’t FRESH produce you are fine! Ie don’t bring whole carrots, fruit (even dried), etc. but if you chop it up and make it into “something” (even just a fruit salad) it should be fine!
I travel internationally frequently and it's fine to *bring* fresh produce, you just need to eat all of it before you arrive at your destination. Bringing fresh produce does, in my experience, almost guarantee you'll get flagged going through security, but once they check the produce they've always let me through with it. Also, you can anticipate that and keep a little bag of produce separate so that flagging the produce doesn't mean they unpack your whole carry on (which they might do even if the produce is on top). On a short international flight, like to Canada or Mexico, it might not be worth it, but on a long haul flight like the ones I take a couple times a year from China to the US it's definitely worth it. Just try to accurately guess how much you'll want, because any extras you might have to throw away when you arrive, depending on how tight customs are. (Tbh I usually just don't declare it and bring it through anyway, but that's definitely a risk.)
Last time I travelled I made your macaroni salad the night before and brought the leftovers, it was so glorious I loved having my own food on the plane haha ! Now I'm going to do this all the time ! Even finding a vegetarian sandwich or a salad can be difficult in some airports... you just never know
I love to take a bag of rice cakes (we get them in like 400 to 600g packages) with me, along some fruit, nuts, bars, chopped veggies (and greens that I put between two rice cakes) and then I'm usually good to go. I can't really have pre-made food that has been sitting around for a while due to histamine issues and I can't have gluten either, so if someone out there has similar issues (or just can't have heavy food when flying), those are great and light to pack! :D
Sarah Kale sorry to hear that! Yeah they are really a great alternative to regular bread and stuff and soo easy to get and don’t take any time to prep as well ☺️
In canada, we can't bring fresh fruit ou legume through security, they have to be dry. 😞 but your recipes look amazing i'll probably try them at home 😊
NikkiVegan me too! They’re super lightweight too. I actually have a mini set that I keep in my car too, so if I ever get food to go or at a place that uses plastic I can just use that instead!
So I was just diagnosed with moderate GERD and have decided to cut dairy amongst many other foods out of my diet. I am a VERY picky eater and never find recipes I like. Oh my goodness, where have you been the last couple years of my life?! Your recipes are so easily AMAZING, after watching your second video I instantly subscribed& I love that you share EVERYTHING, some UA-camrs say “subscribe to this for my recipe” but you put yours in the info box. Seriously you’re awesome, keep it up.
Great ideas, thanks! Until this Spring, I was always surprised when I've heard people that they take food and water in the airplane with them, as the companies in Romania don't allow outside food or water containers past security. You can bring food from the airport food court sometimes, and water bought in the airport also. But during a trip in Iceland we flew from another country and we could bring our water and food. That was so nice! We brought oatmeal and banana cookies, some fruits and I think something else, but I don't remember now...
I loved all the recipes in this video! Can I request a similar video with more recipes that don't require refrigeration? I think that would be a great idea for school/work, etc when you don't have access to a fridge. Thank you!
I travel weekly and love your ideas. I haven't made sushi to take but its perfect and will try next week. For those of you who want sauce, the regulations are 3.4 ounces. I pack mine in the small 1.2 ounce spice jars. They're clearly small enough to qualify should the 1.2 OZ label get removed and small enough that most TSA people won't question whether they're a personal item. The last time I was challenged I stated I use my peanut butter for a facial mask and walked right through. Just remember, these items must be in your 1 quart baggie with your other personal items. Also, don't forget these rules do not apply to frozen food. If you have a liquid frozen solid it gets through but sometimes you have to say "its frozen". The frozen simply needs to be frozen when you cross through security. It will obviously thaw through out the day. Happy traveling.
Every time I fly and try to take food, they not only look through it and scan it, but they usually make me throw it away in the end. I always used to get a long speech about how I can't bring food that isn't packaged past security. After 5 times I just stopped trying. I also usually get more scrutiny in general because I'm brown though.
ThNk you so much for doing these videos I am going to be becoming vegan and these types of videos have really helped me get a proper understanding of veganism and I’m so excited to start to become vegan!! So I love you and thank you!
I live in the UK and fly to the US frequently, I’m vegan and have a severe nut allergy so I always bring my food and I have never had any problems. Great video! Love new ideas🙂
Just started being vegan and I’m so inspired by the foods that you prepared. Thank you so much for the great ideas. Keep vlogging & congratulations to your very informative channel. 😘💕
Thank You! I love travel food info!! Love! Still refer to your other travel oatmeal vid, often! Adding this one to my Travel Food folder, now, too. And Yes, please film MORE Travel Food vids!!
Ok. I had this amazing eggplant bacon at a vegan restaurant today. It was AMAZING. Will you do a video on this? I had it in a wrap with lettuce, tomatoes and avocado. It was seriously so good and I could barely tell it wasn’t real bacon. Yum.
Alot of her older videos (when she was in college lol) have tons of good recipe ideas for college students. That and her videos about budget eating are really good resources for eating vegan when you have little cooking space/money.
One time I was flying out of Cleveland and they flagged my purse and I was so confused because I didn’t think I had anything liquid in there but when he checked he found an avocado I had forgotten I had there 😹 so random! He let me keep it tough :) Just subscribed, love your videos!
Love the oatmeal idea! I've in the past hit up Starbucks (with my personal thermos) and bought warm plant milk for it!! Yumm!! Great ideas as usual, have to make sushi the next time I fly!!
Ugh yes!! I love this video! I legit was starving on my 9 hour flight to Hawaii because I figure I could just buy vegan food at the airport. I’m leaving again to Hawaii in 2 days and I’m gonna be eating soooo good! ♥️♥️
Super helpful! Love watching your Instagram story while you're in Boston and my home city. It's awesome to see your thoughts on some of my favorite vegan places!! Thanks for the AWESOME tips
Love your videos! Here some video ideas: You could talk about reusable bamboo toothbrushes or about the menstrual cup. I think they both make a huge positive impact to protecting the Environment and people should know about them. Tons of love from Spain!
Love this video! I'm always afraid to bring any food to the airport and have to throw it into the bin. Good ideas! I will definitely gonna try oats next time ;)
This helps so much , I hate airport food it’s overpriced and not very good , I forgot to pack food last time I flew and I had a smoothie and hummus for dinner which was very overpriced . The sweet potatoes with banana and strawberries looks delicious
Timely vid, in less than 2 weeks is my 1st flight as a full on veeg, was wondering about flying with my own food, now I know! That sushi looks good (minus the avo, blech!) gonna actually attempt it. Been watching your videos for a while, subbed with this one!
I'm going to take the airplane soon, this is so so helpful!! And I appreciated so much that you talked about the plastic! Those meals look soo tasty btw.... I'd definitely enjoy more of this kind, thanks a lot! 😊💕
Last time I took a plane, I brought vegan margarine and some peanut butter from home and bought a vegan (toasted of course) bagel at Starbuck's and voilà! Warm, yummy vegan breakfast!
I have been stalking your channel for a short while now and love your recipes...I’m not vegan but you make me wish I was....maybe in the future! I don’t even fly but thought this was a cool video
I’m flying to Australia from the us and I’m a gf vegan (gluten intolerance) and i have to go on 9 flights (3 there 3 back). So that will be interesting to see how the food will fair. Because my shortest flight is 5 hours, my mom isn’t letting me get the “fruit meal”. Which means I have to choose vegetarian or gluten free. I can tolerate gluten to a certain amount; it gives me migraines and makes me feel like I have the flu before it starts hurting my stomach. So I’ll alternate vegetarian and gluten free. Definitely will be bringing quick oats, dried fruits (mangoes!), chickpeas, and a crap ton of bananas. I’ve never thought of bringing potatoes on a plane, as well as sushi, but I DEFINITELY will
Hey Caitlin tnk you for all your helpful tips my dear , what a remakeable channel for a young vegan like yourself . i just love your style and professional personality you display in all your videos kp up the gd joy .😉👌
About oatmeal... if you dont take that much beauty products I believe you can just get 100ml bottle( like the one you would put your cosmetics in) and fill it with milk ♥
I would love to hear what you think of Chucks and New Seasons and the comparison of Miami culture to the ‘Couve. Have you tried out Vita Cafe on Alberta in Portland?
YESS! I always DM you on insta asking you stuff about food when traveling so thank you so much for making this video!!! I have a 10 hour flight from Paris to Denver in October so I’m making allll of these 👏🏼
Such great ideas! I do road trips and never really thought of any of these ideas...gee, just take real food! lol! I usually do some kind of burritos and lara bars...so boring!
I just took a trip to San Francisco this month and on the way back, I had packed a couple of pb&j's but trusted my friend to carry them. And even though I reassured that they can bring the food through security, just to put it one of the bins- they got scared and threw the sandwiches out -_- Next time I'll carry the food- and maybe use one of these ideas!
You can bring liquids and condiments with you. They just have to be 3 fl. oz. or less and placed in a Ziploc bag. P.S. Hummus is considered a "liquid."
Hummus, butter, cream cheese in their original containers (over 3 fl oz).... we've had them all taken away. They told us if it "conforms to the container" they will take it from you. Smart putting them in small containers!!!
I eat sweet potatoes, spring rolls, protein bars, and sushi are some of my favorites! Fruits like peaches, apples, bananas, and strawberries are also fantastic and are much cheaper than airport food!

All of these recipes should be okay for international flights too 😊
Depends where you’re going! I got through with a bag a grapes to Germany a month ago. Most standard fruits are okay, exotic ones are not

Sarah Kale sorry to hear that! Yeah they are really a great alternative to regular bread and stuff and soo easy to get and don’t take any time to prep as well ☺️
Hana S That's fine, I think you get used to it. And no longer experiencing all those issues and allergy symptoms is SO nice!
couldn't agree more! ^^
These are good recipes for school/college lunches too. You should do another video with these kinds of recipes!! :)
In canada, we can't bring fresh fruit ou legume through security, they have to be dry. 😞 but your recipes look amazing i'll probably try them at home 😊
I want those bamboo utensils! Such a cute kit :)
NikkiVegan They sell them on Amazon. They're only like $12 or so. I have 2 sets and a mini set for my son. Love them!
NikkiVegan me too! They’re super lightweight too. I actually have a mini set that I keep in my car too, so if I ever get food to go or at a place that uses plastic I can just use that instead!

Definitely more videos like these! Maybe an airport travel series or road trip series?

Skylar what? Where do you live? They’re not supposed to do that!!
That is so messed up - no one had ever said that to me aside from things being too liquidy. What airport do you fly out of?
Yeah I can never get things through security unless they're packaged. For example, a sealed bag of sunflower seeds.
Skylar
That's f*cked up! :/
Skylar same with me. Only thing I've been able to bring so far is a pb&j.
ThNk you so much for doing these videos I am going to be becoming vegan and these types of videos have really helped me get a proper understanding of veganism and I’m so excited to start to become vegan!! So I love you and thank you!
Brilliant travel ideas , and the bamboo cutlery set I did not know about,
Love the video! I would love it if you make a video in the future about how you buy vegan clothes/try and live minimalistic/lower the waste you make.
I live in the UK and fly to the US frequently, I’m vegan and have a severe nut allergy so I always bring my food and I have never had any problems. Great video! Love new ideas🙂

As someone who works in an Airport here in Australia the Parent rooms have a microwave for baby bottles. You can go heat up your food :D :D

LMAO!
This is amazing

I love making vegan bagel sandwiches. They're so versatile and filling.
Great snack ideas!!! I would love to see some more 😁
As a flight attendant, I do not recommend airplane hot water. I can't go into detail but I reccomend getting your water IN the airport.
Hello can you please tell me where you got the red funnel from....look really sturdy
This video is very helpful !
SUCH a good video idea!!

You are the best!! I love your foods
The C in Caitlin is for CREATIVE!!!😍

Olivia Renshaw very true - forgot about that!
Your videos give me LIFE 💕💕💕 freaking love you & your beautiful channel!
great video & great ideas!!!
loved the ideas, flying to Miami in a month
About oatmeal... if you dont take that much beauty products I believe you can just get 100ml bottle( like the one you would put your cosmetics in) and fill it with milk ♥
perfect timing! i'm going abroad in two weeks and needed some ideas for my long flights!
Most TSA checkpoints DO NOT allow glass through security.
Sari Damien I’ve flown through multiple airports and have never had an issue with this. But if you do, you can always use a plastic container instead
I would love to hear what you think of Chucks and New Seasons and the comparison of Miami culture to the ‘Couve.
Have you tried out Vita Cafe on Alberta in Portland?
potato boats are the best! I cant wait to get a bamboo utensil set:)
Such great suggestions. Sushi!! Omg...I bet everyone around you will be so jelly. YUMZ
So many great ideas
YESS! I always DM you on insta asking you stuff about food when traveling so thank you so much for making this video!!! I have a 10 hour flight from Paris to Denver in October so I’m making allll of these 👏🏼
I haven't flown on a plane for about 12 years which was back in 2006.
You always do these videos right as I get home from vacation. 😂
tysm omg this is so helpful
I need to get one of those bamboo mats so I can make my own sushi too. We LOVE sushi.
Great video! I will be lazy one making a sushi bowl! :)
Such great ideas! I do road trips and never really thought of any of these ideas...gee, just take real food! lol! I usually do some kind of burritos and lara bars...so boring!
This is a SAVE! I'm going to France and was just wondering how the "airport" food was going to be
First!❤️ love this
can you make healthy vegan recipes for people who hate vegetables? My husband only eats carrots, peas, corn, tomato sauce and potatoes =(
What do you know about Prebiotics and Probiotics?
This is super useful! And totally agree with the plastic thing :)
Love this video
Really liked the video!! I'm gonna have to make that sushi!!
I just took a trip to San Francisco this month and on the way back, I had packed a couple of pb&j's but trusted my friend to carry them. And even though I reassured that they can bring the food through security, just to put it one of the bins- they got scared and threw the sandwiches out -_-
Next time I'll carry the food- and maybe use one of these ideas!
I like making oat cakes/biscuits pre flight 😎. But these look delicious 🤗
Don’t the peanut butter and sauces count as liquids/gels wouldn’t they get flagged up?
Yuummmm all these ideas look good :)
Another one please!! :)
Problem with sweet potatoes I found that their juices release a smell over time without refrigeration. The honey it releases
amazing information
Also I love Black RIce
You can bring liquids and condiments with you. They just have to be 3 fl. oz. or less and placed in a Ziploc bag.
P.S. Hummus is considered a "liquid."
Hummus, butter, cream cheese in their original containers (over 3 fl oz).... we've had them all taken away. They told us if it "conforms to the container" they will take it from you. Smart putting them in small containers!!!
Is there a UK version of thrive market? Xx
