Joanna Batherson Hi Joanna sorry for the late reply been away for a few days. I am pleased you have found the vides useful. If your a beginners in watercolour checkout my free course (if you haven't already) at www.purewatercolour.com we will be covering basic colour theory , simple landscapes, boats, buildings and beaches. We will be exploring painting with the three primary colours only Red, Yellow and blue. It might be of some help. regards Patrick
i enjoyed watching this, many thanks for posting. ill watch it again today and try and paint along with you! everything ive done recently looks a bit drab so nice to get the direction..
Your welcome ed, I think we all go through periods of our paintings looking lifeless. Take a fresh approach and use brighter colours it might not feel right, I'm sure you'll be pleased with the end result.
Very complicated subject done very well under the pressure of limited time! Very pleasing! Especially interested in the initial wash on the buildings then the secondary and even tertiary detailing with added color.
Thank you so much for posting that. I have been taking part in watercolour classes for the last 3 months or so - having not picked up a paint brush for the last 30 years. Your video and easy way of communicating is inspiring and your painting beautiful.
Great video Patrick. I started painting last year and have been struggling with the water. thank you for showing us all how it's done. I will be using your methods on my next painting. Thanks again, Ian.
Hi Patrick. I just started my hand at painting about 4 months ago and your tutorial is wonderful! I was especially excited to see your method of using your trusty "stick" to steady your hand, as I too have issues with a very shaky hand! Great idea!!
Thanks for sharing your talent. This is one of the best works because it is made step by step. Reflections in the water are wonderful. Thanks friend, and .... watercolor forever!!
thank you so so so much, your videos are helpimg me a lot, i am studing architecture and urban planning in Albania and i suck at drawing or using watercolor, but by watching your videos and trying to understand and mimic youer style i can say i have improved quiet a bit, thank you again. Please keep making more like this( citites reflected in water )
after watching this video, I start thinking that there really no standard technique with watercolors. I've been watching several videos and your way of painting lets me think that watercolors is simply pure fantasy..
I don't agree. There are several standard techniques with watercolors. For instance you paint another way if you are painting wet-on-wet or wet-on-dry or dry-on-wet or if you premix your colors on the palette oder mix on the canvas with more or less water, or use negative painting, or do a mixed painting of watercolor and ink. And if something is pure phantasy doesn't depend on watercolor, acrylic or oil but on the subject you're painting. ;) Especially in this case it is an artist interpretation of a real world existing scenery. Nevertheless this is a nice painting!
Wow, that is a very nice painting, The colors are wonderful and your explanations and notes are very good..thank you for sharing your knowledge and gift. :)
Good Demo Patrick, It's great to see how others approach a painting task. Would love to know what that palette is you are using. It has nice deep mixing wells.
Hi John thanks for your comments, i agree its good to see others working I've gained lots of inspiration + technique building. The pallet I'm using is the Liz Deaking palette the best one that I've come across for my needs here is a link to it www.artsupplies.co.uk/item-liz-deakin-watercolour-palette.htm Thanks agian
Thankyou Patrick Ley-Greaves. Shortly after I watched your video I visited your site/blog and you mentioned artsupplies.co there so I had already found the Liz Deakin palette. Maybe that will be my next purchase. I used to see your work quite regularly on eBay and wondered where you'd gone. I see you are embracing the new technology more. Unfortunately, we have to engage with our customers on all these different platforms now. UA-cam, Facebook, Google+, Twitter in order to get any sales. I spend more time doing that now than painting. Mad.
Hi, what happened, i was watching your video, then NO sound at all, then came back. Do you have another video similar to this one, with your voice? Thank you for all those fantastics videos ! Teri
+harpaint I really enjoy painting Padstow in Cornwall. that particular painting covers a lot so a very useful demonstration. You might be interested in being kept up to date with my painting activities facebook.com/PureWatercolour/
+Patrick Ley-Greaves (Pure Watercolour) Yes it does cover a lot and it's helpful to be able to watch it more than once. Your videos are very helpful and it is sooo generous of you to share your knowledge here!
Hello Patrick, thank you for this excellent demo. I'm trying to plan a similar scene from a photo, but it has white buildings reflected in the water, and i can't think of a way of doing this in watercolour without using white gouache ( which i don't like using). I've tried achieving this in the past with masking fluid, but that didn't really work. Have you any ideas? Thank you, Stephen.
Many thanks for sharing, you gave some really valuable insights, with this demo, much appreciated!! Audio drops out as you start painting and laying the foundation wash, but I more or less got the jist of what was going on!
Hi Ian sorry about the audio I have put notations in but only viewable on some pc's or laptops i think its got something to do with having flash player installed. I have just checked out your website, very nice. Your paintings are very relaxing excellent work. Keep an eye on my channel and web site www.Patrickleygreaves.com for more tutorials in the coming weeks. Any more questions please feel free to ask.
Thanks for your feedback Patrick, that's great encouragement and much appreciated. Your video has inspired me to dust off my own video camera and share my knowledge and know how too!! Watch this space!!
Hello, Patrick. Thank you for the video, I found it quite useful and inspiring. I've never felt I was able to tame watercolour but now I'm thinking of having another go. Could you tell me what brushes you use? Is it squirrel or something? And the size? Thanks in advance!
Thank you so much! It's my first time to use water color. I did it well because of your teaching. But the color in my painting is too pure and bright, could you explain how to make the color more grey but not dirty?
时雨 Thank you very much for your comment I am pleased the video helped you paint your first watercolour. Mixing greys is simple blue, yellow and red. Try not to over mix colours and keep your pallet clean, its easy to allow colours to become muddy by over mixing. Practice on a piece of paper using the primary colours blue, yellow and red and see what combinations of grey you can come up with . You will soon get the hang of it!
To make those masts on the boats...I find it difficult to make with my rigger. Can you tell me what brand & # rigger you are using in this video? thank you.
tillygirl56 I am using the Liz Dekan pallet highly recommended the first video in my up coming free course shows it more detail. I am looking forward to the course starting also its going to be great fun!
It's a beautiful painting, thanks for posting it. I'm a beginner painter and I still tend to get stuck on painting exactly what I see. When you were painting the buildings you said to try to vary the colours to keep the painting interesting. So I'm wondering if you use the actual colours of the buildings from your source picture or just use whatever colours work in your painting?
Really like this painting. I find painting reflections quite difficult. I don't think I know what to look for to paint them Do you have a particular strategy or do you just naturally have a keen eye? also loved the colors....
Hi Patrick, I finally am ready to invest in a mop. If I get an Isabey 6234, what size do you think is good for my first investment? I only paint small, never larger than Arches quarter sheets. Would a size 7 do, or should I go larger? Currently I use a soft size 14 round brush by Rosemary but I prefer to get a mop.
Janet Catmull Hi Janet, I would go for a size 3 big enough to complete a whole page wash on 1/4 imperial but small enough to get detail. I would think with a bit of practice you could easily paint a entire picture with the one brush. They point up so well that detail can easily be achieved. In the coming weeks maybe I will do demo one brush and three colours only!
Patrick Ley-Greaves Yes, I recall seeing you paint a good part of a painting with a small squirrel mop -- I think it was the Cornwall scene with headlands and two boats. Thanks for your advice! I can't wait to have a good excuse to get a new brush! Looking forward to your watercolour class, too.
+Patrick Ley-Greaves (Pure Watercolour) Your Pure Watercolour class was fantastic, Patrick. I looked forward to each class and my painting improved, according to my husband and sole Art Critic. Thank you for being so generous with your time and advice. I hope you do continue with tutorials and demos! Cheers....
I'm a beginner, and to be honest I think this is a little advanced for me. I'd probably only end up feeling extremely frustrated if I attempted to draw, let alone paint it. It's a lovely painting though.
Tracy Blackburn ~Tracy just go for it, its only a piece of paper. Half the fun of painting is experimenting. Don't worry about the drawing to much. Personally I find the painting is what counts and bad drawing can be covered up by good painting.
For sure, if I was good enough at painting to cover up a bad drawing I wouldn't be looking at beginners tutorials. Still, you never know, one day if I keep on practicing with the basics I might surprise the world with an oustanding piece of artistry. Don't hold your breath though :D Don't mind me, I'm just in a crabby mood today, but I do appreciate the response and attempt at encouragement :)
Tracy Blackburn if you find the scene to complicated simplify just do simple outlines trying to scale the objects try not to think of what your drawing as a farmhouse just think of it as a shape. I know its not easy. Just keep things simple to start with. I will post a more simple demo for those starting out shortly. Thanks for the comment.
Is there any chance you could post a quick sketch on your website please? I'd love to be able to do this one in particular because it looks good for a beginner
Fantastic ,beautiful colour!😁
Great demo Patrick, enjoyed the area as well last summer and brought lots of ideas for paintings .
Wonderful work. Thank you for showing.
Thanks Wolfgang. I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Patrick, thank you for your videos. I like your loose style and technique. This has been so helpful!

Thanks for this lovely painting

Interesting thought , I think you could be right!!

yes techniques are common, painting with fantasy is less common and without both is simply painting. Appreciation is an eye job, who cares?! :)
So why did you comment if you don’t care. You don’t like anyone to offer a different point of view.
love it... comes together so effortlessly. :)
Thanks Jason :)
subscribed to your channel my good sir, great painting and great tips thank you

great demo Sir! size of your brushes?
Hello, Patrick. Thank you for the video, I found it quite useful and inspiring. I've never felt I was able to tame watercolour but now I'm thinking of having another go. Could you tell me what brushes you use? Is it squirrel or something? And the size? Thanks in advance!

What sort of board to you have the paper clipped to? (Also, I love the idea of clips instead of tape; brilliant!)
What happened to the sountrack?
To make those masts on the boats...I find it difficult to make with my rigger. Can you tell me what brand & # rigger you are using in this video? thank you.
Beautiful
Patrick, what brand palette is that? And are you using permanent magenta, or cobalt violet? Can't wait for class to start on the 19th.

Got the #6 mop and it's perfect! Thanks.
I'd loved to actually see the demo being done, instead of half the screen displaying a sweater shoulder. Looks like a gorgeous painting.

Would have loved to watch all but lost audio at 2.06. Noted others had same problem.
Yes sorry about that :(
Great painting, but frustrating that you didn't show the drawing up close so I could actually see how to start it...
Thanks for your comment. Please forgive my oversight I will do my best not to make such a stupid error ever again.
Is there any chance you could post a quick sketch on your website please? I'd love to be able to do this one in particular because it looks good for a beginner
Patrick, beautiful painting but very frustrated without the sound.
I wish I could be your student!!
Great picture but why dont you people help us beginners by uploading the picture for us to cope would really help
Gracias!!!!
Also, please give time to draw the scene 2b painted
ahh just came back...
Is it just me or is something wrong with the audio once he started painting? 😕
TheSgyro same happened to me
Yes, it's you. Sound is perfect at my end.
Richard Gibbs Sound lost from 2:04 until 7:23. This is mentioned on the video. Have you actually watched it all?
Same happened to me ;-;
And me 😢
There’s no sound once he starts painting......
Karina Cass it does come back on after the first wash.
hermoso,
No sound.
Sound would have been nice.
My sound died on this video when he started painting ;-;
Sorry about that. Thanks for watching anyways
Pure Watercolour Patrick Ley-Greaves Its fine I enjoyed the video!
No way is this for beginners. But thanks anyway.
Subject is too far away to actually see what is going on.
nice
