You have the best tutorials on YT. I've watched a bunch. A lot of them show 10 seconds of video and then lecture for 10 minutes. It seems to me they love to show their faces on YT rather than showing the real swimming. You do a great job.
I wish I could give this video a million thumbs up! All your videos actually! They're very concise, highly informative, I really REALLLLY appreciate the work you put into them, please keep them coming! I'm just going through your videos, and haven't watched them all, but if you haven't done one on how to tread water efficiently, please do! Before covid I took swimming classes, I was able to pick up everything EXCEPT treading water! I just can't do it sustainably without expending every ounce of my energy! Can you help me??
Even if this is basic advice, I still learnt something from it. It is natural or comfortable to swim with the head above water, that does not mean it is efficient or correct. Also I like how you respond to misinformation. One commenter said to let people do what they want while you kindly reminded them there is a correct way (of course, you are educating your audience to make their swimming life easier).
Why do you swim with head up: - Do not want to put your face in the water - It is hard to breathe - You swim without goggles - Do not want to get your hair wet Let me know in the comments! The funniest 3 comments will get a one year premium subscription for SwimUp app!
i think there is another reason that people do not like to have their head under water. I always found it very difficult to breathe out through the nose and push the remaining water out before breathing in through the mouth again. When I tried to breathe in through my mouth the water stuck in my nose would run down my throat. Since i use a nose clip I never had a problem like this again. Edit: I also use earplugs to keep water out of my ears because the swimming cap over the ears was not comfortable for me.
Hi Kai. I used to swim like the guy showed in the video - with my head out of water. Two of the problems were relevant to me - Breathing and lack of goggles. I bought the goggles. Yet I was still struggling with breathing. Note that I never before knew how to swam in my life. After buying the goggles, I started working on the breathing teqchinque and timing. It took me good two weeks to get comfortable. Sometimes you just feel like giving up and you will never learn this. but eventually you just hit the breakthrough. You will ocasionally breathe in some water. But only after two weeks of practice I went from being unable to breathe out under water at all, to swimming correct breastroke comfortably for 100 meters at a time. It takes time, but after you learn this, you do not even need nose clip anymore. Its all about the timing.
Great video! 👍 The only reason I keep my head out: medical reasons. When I have an ear infection or a perforated eardrum (like right now). Head under the water gives me ear pain, headaches and dizziness due to the pressure.
I mean, I want to keep my head up when I'm swimming with friends, which is almost always the case. We talk, want to see eachother and just breathe more naturally instead of making bubbles with our noses
What are you swimming for; socializing or getting yourself in shape. If it's for the first then fine. If it's for the second then you're lying to yourself.
@@StarshipTr00per When we say "let's cross that lake together", I think we mean both tbh. I mean, I get the message but it's still a funny dilemma to exist to me

I love swimming when i can but due to repeated ear infections and operations i need to be really careful putting my head underwater even shampooing i need silicone ear plugs.. so i prefer to swim with my head just above water even with the plugs even chorinated water going up nose and into sinuses can cause painful ear infections. I can swim 40 lengths , 1km quite comfortably with head above water.
When I use a kick board with my head up - as so many people seem to find easy, my legs and hips drop. As soon as my head drops down I’m fine. Why is this??
Hey, thank you for your comment! This happens because your body balance gets wrong. Your body works as a scale, when one part of your body raises, the other part lowers. Please, check our video "5 essential swimming skills". I am sure, it will help you to learn about it!
Probably because you don't have much air in your lungs. Remember, your lungs, when filled with air, serve as a buoy to you. Thereby giving you that buoyancy in water.
I always keep my head up above water or just below my nose and I just float not necesarrily swim it feels good compared to when water goes in my nose and feel like I am going to puke from mucus from my nose coming down my throat and don t have any tissues to blow my nose
I have never been able to get the breathing right 😔 I've tried repeatedly over the years. If I exhale through my nose I fill up with water coughing, same with exhaling through mouth. I love to swim! Better use goggles. When you’re in a pool with chloride it can damage your eyes when you swim for a long time . Because of the comfort It also helps you to keep more relaxed and let you swim more horizontal when you swim and exhale under water. Try to float more on your body like you can float on your back and you will not sink so fast
I used to envy people who could swim head up breastroke until i find out it is actually a wrong technique. I always swim breastroke with my face down in the water
Here is another reason not to put your head to the water. It is water temperature. I do Winter Swimming and when the water is about 5°C it is dificult for me to put my head into wate even if I wear a neoprene cup.
I recently had accident that ruptured my eardrum. So i swim without getting my head in the water. Do you have any solution, or is theres a sure 100% way to prevent water getting in the ear?
When I swim in winter the seawater is so cold I don't put my face in the water in the beginning until my body gets comfortable with the water then I will start to put my face and my whole head in the water. I think it's not going to have bad effect to the rest of the body since it is only for few minutes with head up position.
Firstly, whether you are a professional swimmer or just a regular person you CAN swim your head up, without submerging your head into the water. If some people have difficulty keeping their heads up it doesn't mean everybody should swim using the same breathing technique. *There are A LOT OF PEOPLE that REALLY ENJOY swimming heads up for long distances AND for hours and hours💖 🥰* Saying that it could cause a problem with neck or anything is not the case for everyone.
My friend is swimming with head above the water. I asked why. The reason is the very beginning he imitate such a style, and its very difficult to change to the right way
Thank you for your comment Margaretha! That's true, when people start swimming wrong, they get used to it and it is hard to start swimming correctly. However, I recommend for your friend to try to put the head in the water little by little. I am sure, your friend will learn to swim correctly! :)
I just can't float when I'm swimming, and I just don't mean my legs. My whole body sinks like a rock! ! I think when we breath out under water like that, we'll sink but if other people can float, why can't I? (If you're going to say you don't have to float on top of the water like a lifevest, than I sink straigt to the bottom when I breath like that. I lie down STRAIGHT on the bottom of the pool. I can’t wear goggles bc I have very bad eyesight. Prescription goggles, apart from being too expensive, are not an option. So what do I do.? My neck and shoulders are beginning to really hurt.
Hey, by the way when I try breathing the way you taught me I can’t, cause the water in my nose is annoying me I can’t just use only mouth while nose is so annoying can I? So I would love to get a solution for this.
Hey, you can exhale through your nose. I teach in the video to exhale in 2 ways: through your nose and through your mouth. Try to exhale through your nose!
