Chuck is 100% correct here. Spurs aren't gonna blow everything they got this off season to try to win now. The better option is to be patient and slowly build, by the 3rd off season i predict thats when they'll make a huge move and have a team that can seriously compete.
Also, Kenny is such a tool. Wemby is getting double and triple teamed like no other rookie has since Shaq and hes putting up historic numbers. I'd love to see how Chet would perform in those circumstances and not be in a system that has opposing defenses have to worry about J-Dub and MVP caliber Shai well before they have to worry about Chet. He would'nt be putting up better numbers than Wemby thats for damn sure
disagree. wemby is so special u need to compete with him quickly. if a "young" costar player is available (trae young) u get him asap. waiting around is how u end up like the mavs and cavs. u capitalize on ur assets before wemby gets his first big contract and before ur picks and younger guys start to lose value. wemby wants to win and keeping him in a losing environment for however long will hinder him. he'll be great no doubt but next season they cannot be a bottom 10 team
edit: messing up early is hetter than messing up down the line. u have more room for error when wemby is still young trying to find that secondary player then when hes gotten his first contract and now u dont know if he'll stay
@@shosh5806 that's not true at all, I see people already forget that the Mavs tried to cash in early by trading for guys like Porzingis and Bertans early into Luka's career. Even now, the Mavs are good but you're not going to see anybody say the are championship favorites. That's what the Spurs are trying to avoid, tell me how the Spurs are going to acquire Trae Young. They're gonna have to give up a lot of draft picks and then they'll be stuck with just Trae and Wemby surrounded by not so great players. That's a solid team but that's not a contender at all! Trae will be making almost $50 mil a year and eventually Wemby will be making even more, that doesn't leave any flexibility to finish putting more talented pieces in place.
Unless the Spurs can get Trae for super cheap, that's a horrible idea
@@shosh5806 so the plan should be, build by drafting and or trading for better talent for now, nothing too crazy. Let Atlanta's 2025 pick convey and hopefully have a decent pick too that year. Draft more players, and fill out team needs via free agency. Then in the 2026 off season, after developing Wemby, Sochan, and other players acquired through the draft. Thats when they should go all in on an All star level talent, at the earliest at least.
That way the Spurs can have multiple players who are young but have high upside, and still have a ton of draft assets and cap space to work with. You throw all of that away after just the first yr of Victor, theyd be dooming him and the team to be good but not great. And trust me, I'd rather them be bad/mediocre for the next few seasons than be stuck in purgatory where they are too bad to not compete, but too good to tank with no way out. Too many teams fall in that trap and it'd suck to see the Spurs follow suit

The problem is that we probably gonna need to trade Vassell, Sochan, and maybe more just to get Trae. Vassell still got a potential for a breakout next season, Sochan is in his 2nd year. I rather wait and get the top picks and compete next season
Victor Wembanyama requires.
PG - big point guard, who can playmake and play defense. Decent shooter. Cade Cunningham would be great.
SG - Defensive minded shooting guard, Amen Thompson caliber player, long arms and decent shooter.
SF - Glue forward, Trevor Ariza, type of player, no true flaws in fundamentals. And decent shooter.
PF - Passing player, can make plays with Victor in low post, look for cuts and dives to the rim. Great fastbreak passer, and knockdown three-pointer shooter. Kevin Love or Frank Wagner, Alfred Sengun, maybe.
Vassell and sochan fill the SG and small forward spots, dev can get his on shot, hit open shots and if you watch sochan story you’d know why the spurs have so much confidence in him, plus if you watch every spurs game you’d see how much of a glue guy he is. They just need time to develop and learn how to play together, despite the spurs being one of the worst teams they’re still ranks amongst the best in assist which tells me they know how to move the ball they’re just missing a starting point guard and some good wing 3 and D guys, because other than Vassell and is osman Victor has no reliable shooters around him but the team has great upside

How about not drafting another player of the same height, weight, position and playstyle. Draft someone that can compliment Wemby. F drafting the "best player." 76ers wasted 3 draft picks(consecutive years) on Centers. Warriors dynasty, spurs dynasty and bulls dynasty was built on proper balanced drafting and free agency moves.

I think the Spurs have the potential to be really good quicker than what Chuck thinks. They have 2 high picks this draft, they can bring potentially 2 good players right away, more than probably at least 1 player who can contribute right away.
If they manage to land at least a good free agent this summer, someone like Tobias Harris or Emmanuel Quickley, then Vasell is no longer the second option, you can have it as your third option and then things start to look a little bit different.

Well, they could also, just draft a point guard it makes no sense to go get a veteran player right now. Honestly, it makes more sense to go get a veteran back up point guard. What the spurs are doing it looks like they’re investing more into their back ups. The guys that can teach them stuff because they have no point of using their cap space now.

Even if the Spurs decide to splurge this summer, I don't think they know what they have in Wemby yet by virtue of Wemby's unbelievable versatility to understand how to build around him (except for PG, need a decent PG - doesn't have to be the end-game PG), plus he's so young and just turned 20 this Jan 2024.
Crazy how wemby has been better than most of us expected ik knew he’d be good but this is different. His haters can’t do anything but bring up the teams record even tho they are tanking and he plays restricted minutes.
Other teams better start making plans and build a super team because in the next 3 to 4 years with all the draft picks, young talent plus PATFOs known ability to develop talent, cap space, and the ability they now have to attract other all stars in free agency. Kenny mispronounced vessel until someone else said it so I don't think he watches spurs games enough to understand Vic isn't Stat padding. Do chets stats have a greater impact? Yes because he is the 2nd or 3 option behind an mvp candidate. But Chuck is right. When you are the guy, the scouting report and emphasis is on you. Jordan Poole knows what that is like now.
I actually agree with Kenny. I don’t think team wins should factor into ROTY voting as much as it does for the other individual awards but the media has been talking out of both sides of their mouth on this. We can’t glorify the sacrifice of greats like K Love, Chris Bosh and Ray Allen in their commitment to winning a championship while also refusing to acknowledge Chet’s ability to get in where he fits in as a rookie on a very competitive team. His ability to find the amount of success he has within the confines of his role is outstanding.
Chuck is right. Shaq is acting like they're on the tail end of the rebuild but in reality it just started, Wemby was the first piece. Be patient, surround him with solid high character guys, and continue to build through the draft these next few years before going after a big name.

Charles is def right. It's a good thing they are losing, and that's how a rebuild works. When you are bad you get high draft picks and when you are good you get low draft picks. Odds are in losing team's favor to get better players to make things more competitive. You don't want go out right now & trade all your picks to bring in a star to go alongside Wemby. No. You keep losing, let Wemby progress and get more mature, pick up 2-3 more players from the draft, then after that 2nd-3rd year start looking to make trades and/or sign. Ideally, it would look something like Wemby this year, #4 pick next year, #8 pick the following year, #12 pick the next & then make your move. You got Wemby and 3 high draft picked players. Try to sign a good free agent. Trae Young has voiced he wants to come play with Wemby. He could be signed in 26 or '27. Think about it. 28yo Trae Young. Wemby. Hopefully two rookie starter role players with picks like 4 & 8. Then you go out and trade future picks for that player you need most. Could be a 3&D wing (a player like Herb Jones) if the need defense. Could be a player like Bojan Bogdanović (an aging veteran who will start and give you 20ppg as the 3rd option.)
It would be a mistake to rush & trade for a 2nd star this offseason

For vets they are missing the biggest point of all, the spurs are not like any other team. Pop is not like any other coach. A few good vets including and if tre Jones keeps developing 2 yrs the spurs will be in the play offs if not next year.
