Peter
Ah, finally another video from my fav Welsh person in Germany! I always like your videos for showing nature, nice countryside and buildings. No poltics to think about or economy to worry about, but just concentrating to nature. i enjoy walking too for that reason. Ordinary people living ordinary lives. By theway when was the last time you sang in a church or a monastery and when will u upload a new song video?
I sang in a church just before Christmas- have a look at my last video, German Winter, aka99! New songs coming after Easter! Yes, it‘s so important to clear the head and get perspective. Walking is the best for that for me.
Ah, super, I hoped you‘d see it! I thought you might like the trees, Robert. I had a lovely walk today, and feel so much better again, after being in beautiful, healing nature. Hope the launch is going well!
@@LaureninGermany it's in progress, still a lot to do. I love these walk's too, so good for heart and soul. Happy to see you at all these lovely places, introducing them to the people.
@@RobertZander-yz3bgI‘m loving it! Are you converting a building into a hotel, or building new? Or was it previously a hotel? I love the series „The Hotel Inspector“. So much to think about- I hope you get lovely guests.
@@LaureninGermany The hotel was already a hotel that changed hands during the Corona period and is now finally getting the urgently needed renovation. This renovation was long overdue, also because the previous owners did not take sufficient care of it. Part of the building itself is very old and is a listed building; it was once a military riding school in Vienna from the imperial era. Everything will be new, but such an old building has its pitfalls, a lot of things have to be taken into account or rethought. Overall working WiFi or fire protection for example.
It was a nice video, not boring at all, seems you always seem to find beautiful places that we Germans even don´t realize. You show us our country new. Thx for that Lauren. 😍👍
Hi Lauren, happily I don't watch tv or listen to the radio, apart from UA-cam I don't use social media either so the world's troubles don't upset the precarious balance of my mind too often. Long ago I read self help books & pretty much all of them said don't watch the news as all it does is tell you terrible things you can't do anything about immediately & it'll make you feel worse than you already do. Re your sparrow poo incident I was narrowly missed by some squirrel poo recently walking a dog under a tree in a local Cardiff park, my first squirrel poo near miss & very glad I wasn't a step further along!! Thank you for sharing your thoughts & taking us amongst all those beautiful trees. ❤🏴❤
Omgoodness, squirrel poo! I didn‘t know that was a thing! Yes, even though we need to know what‘s going on, most of the time it‘s just a useless, negative influence. We‘ve got Welsh weather here today, feeling right at home!
@@LaureninGermany Haha, yes, the squirrel poo was a big surprise but a girl nearby with better eyesight than me also saw the poo drop & could see the squirrel just above me & no bird so it was the first time for her & me to witness squirrel poo bombing! That Welsh wet stuff here too, lot of it around this winter.

To be honest: I have never been proud of my hometown or the country as such. It's only in the recent weeks where I finally see people stand up against the slow shift towards right-wing populism that has been going on for ages that I develop some sense of pride in them. To _finally_ see really big crowds in eastern Germany make a stand for their places and against the likes of PEGIDA and all the other bastards that have been acting by and large undisturbed there was so soothing! Yesterday, I joined the demonstration in my hometown of Troisdorf. We are a collection of smaller towns and villages that add up to a population of some 70000. Each of the ten parts had its own event, and I joined the one in Troisdorf's central part, we must have been around 5000 people. And that is a LOT for a town that size. I have no idea how many in the other events were, it's safe to say that around 10% of our citizens took time from their Saturdays to dedicate it to showing the AfD and their likes the seven fingers. For me, this was the fourth time I joined protests against that party. A couple of years ago, we were "honoured" with having the AfD Northrhine-Westphalia party convention in town. I lived here all my life and _never_ saw a single far-right skinhead here in town. (That is not to say there are none of these peeeeeps here, they just don't dare to show their colours openly, knowing what the reaction would be.) That changed when the AfD was in town. No one tell us they are anything else than what the people who raise their voices against the party see in them: A Nazi party. We had the most immediate evidence one can think of. People abroad, please take note that these demonstrations are _in favour_ of the constitution we have in force and against parties that want to do away with it. There are many things that go wrong here, but still there has never been a fairer state on the grounds here than the Federal Republic of Germany. We just make it clear that it is worth fighting for and that we _will_ fight for it.
@@LaureninGermany I still think that if there's a cure for patriotism, history is that cure for Germans. Only metres from where the demonstration stopped on Saturday stood the barracks where forced labourers were held to work in the factories around. I know of Netherlanders that were imprisoned there, but there probably were others as well. (So much the more mind boggling it is that Geert Wilders, who spoke at PEGIDA rallies to swastika-fas, has been elected there…) I am a huge fan of Itchy Boots, a Dutch lady who is travelling the world by motorcycle and documenting her journey on UA-cam videos. Wherever she goes, she finds kindness and friendliness in people. There's all we have in common as species of Homo Sapiens Sapiens, there's so little that divides us. "The Germans" are almost as diverse as humanity in total. Besides what we call high German nowadays, there are dialects that divert from high German so much, they are considered different languages altogether by a couple of linguists. Unlike the UK where the Gaelic languages are taught in schools and are being kept alive, here they get extinct more and more. The Sorbic language which is spoken by a fairly small group in eastern Germany isn't even remotely comprehensible to German speakers, it is closest to Czech, if I am not mistaken. Germany is a very divers country and I kind of can't really draw the lines around this one "people", just like some of the languages reach across the borders in Europe. So where is the line to draw at all? The only logical border I can see is around mankind and our spaceship Earth.
There is no line, you are right zweispurmopped. I studied the origins of languages to a certain, very small, extent and we are almost all connected, if you go back far enough.
With all the protest movements it's currently difficult to keep track. I will try to summarize: In no specific order we have public transport employees striking for better work hours, farmers protesting against losing tax privileges (the whole story here is actually that agrarian policy has gone wrong for decades, leading to small farmers giving up and large companies taking over), large protests against a meeting of extremists attended by significant figures of more than one party where the possible deportation of millions was discussed, and the ongoing climate crisis and the question what is the right form to protest when not nearly enough is being done about it. And that's not even everything, there's also the Israel/Gaza conflict in which it is difficult to take sides, the ongoing war of Russia against Ukraine ... It's all a sign that there's freedom of expression, despite what some lunatics want us to believe. You can say whatever you like, just prepare to be criticized for it when it's too far out.
So ... as far as there are guillotines with lichen on in Germany everything seems to be okay, haha! :`D You are so diplomatic, I wish I also could be like that! :-) Thank you for making me laugh, your video is precious in many ways, as always. In Germany we say it brings you luck if a bird shits on you. 🙂
Yes! I also think of it as lucky! It made me take myself less seriously 😂 I am so glad I made you laugh, I thought I might seriously worry people with my weird humour this time 😂
@@LaureninGermany Why, it`s lovely! :`D Many people here in Germany have a big sense for "british humor", we find it very similar to ours, but there will always be some people who are a bit more sensitive to such things, you find them in every country. Recently I lost two of my favorite oaks right in front of my balcony, third floor. They had been the reason why I urgently had wanted THAT apartment: because those big old oaks had been so beautiful, from my window everything had been totally green plus some sky, No street, no cars, no neighbours could be seen from balcony and window. One of these oaks stood right "in" my balcony so that it was hugged in green leaves and gnarled branches from spring to fall and I had to cut them a bit every year so that they, moved by the winter`s storm, would not play "the harp" on the metal struts (Metallstangen) all night (was very loud because the balcony` s iron went into the walls). Every summer I put my arms into its lower crown and touched the leaves and after summer I always plugged acorns right from the tree, I could see them grow from tiny to ripe right in front of my nose. When I planted climbing nasturtium it always climbed into the branches of the oak and blossomed there orange and yellow - until it all tore off in the next stronger wind. Those oaks just left some sun through but protected me from prying eyes for eleven years and made me feel like living in a secret green cave high in the trees. Two days ago I worked at my desk in the livingroom and heard two electric saws all the time, voices of men shouting and talking. I went to the window and saw they cut both of the old oaks totally down, now there are just two stems, totally bare and about seven metres high. I will wait for some new life sprouting from them, I hope it will happen. I cried for four days because of those giant wonderful oaks. They had been everything to me, we had been friends, we had been talking in summer nights and I had touched their frozen branches in strong, chilly, dry winters, telling them to hold on. Now my balcony feels so bare and naked, I am totally "auf dem Teller", as we Germans say. And I miss them so badly. But long speech short, of course there had been a reason for them cutting those two giants down, and that`s the point: There were way too much lichen on it. These trees were both totally full of lichen everywhere, and that had to be stopped, haha! But if they had asked me - I`d rather have an army of lichen right in front of my balcony window than loosing two magical old soul friends! 🙂
Honestly, I really feel for you. I totally get it. I begged for a particular room in my student hostel because of the trees, and I remember them like two old friends to this day. Lichen is a sign of good air. I can´t understand why they cut them down. I suppose they know best. Like when they planted monoculture forests everywhere...

Hmm. Nice video. As usual. First time i was in Germany was in 1983. My buddies and i stranded in Neunkirchen because our Toyota Hiace broke down on the Autobahn. From Kiel. On our way to Paris. We took into a lokal B and B. One of my friends at the time could not close his big mouth at the breakfast table and started to talk ww2. Oh boy, did we get a lecture about the greatness of old Affie,! Still Germans use the word " Negergeldt" about the war reparations. Any German can tell you i am correct about this. My mother, at the age of 13. Was told by a whermacht soldier that he would see to get. her whole family deported to "Nacht und Nebel ' simply because she like all good Norwegians refused to sit on the same seat as a German invader in the tram in Oslo. My mother "hurt" that Nazis feelings. My Norwegian language teacher was imprisoned in Auschwitz for years for being in the Norwegian resistance. Yes. Germany is a great cultural nation. And yes. I love the various great minds of German history. But you can say the same about Ruzzia. Any time i meat a German citizen anywhere in Scandinavia, and i do every summer, they act like "herrenvolk". They go into a lidel or Aldi in Denmark and start to order in German language. Enjoy. Your stay in Germany. You have a nice channel. But to be frank. Germany is not my favourite country on planet Earth.
I tend to focus on the positives of today here, Hans. I‘m aware of the things you described. And it hurts me to think of your mum and teacher. And how horrible, what you encountered at the breakfast table. I just hope that by spreading the positive things I notice and encounter, there will be a tiny good effect from that. I will just say that I think the Germans are embarrassed to try to speak the language of the countries they visit, because they expect that they should be perfect.
@@LaureninGermany Sure. They are so sweet. As i wrote: " i am a great fan of german culture". Some parts of it. I have had several German partners in Norway. So i know them pretty well. @@LaureninGermany They bombede London into the stone age, and the only thing they regret is that they lost ww2. Times might change. Sympathy might change. But history never change. German tourists in Denmark are not "Shy" when they come here. Believe me. No big deal anyway. Take care. Love your videos. Ok. I will give you this one for free: " Bolle," in Danish slang mean "Fuck". So. It was really kind of funny. No offence at all. Language is a bitch..😉
Lauren, thank you so much for your calm video. I confess, I needed this to remind me of normality which is ok. On the other hand I think it is extremely important that the silent majority of people find their voice to stop neo-fascism. About the guillotine and the Leichen... sorry, lichen... I wonder why they are spread across the land... must have been a terrible time once 😁
You‘ve got me laughing with your Leichen comment! Yes, it‘s easy to lose perspective at the moment. And very reassuring that people are demonstrating gegen Rechts.
@@LaureninGermany Well I'd be considered even more out of place than you, because my parents immigrated in the early 90s. However, I was born here and lived most of my life here. That along with my citizenship certainly gives me reason to be calm. Some of my closest friends voted (at least in the past) for the AfD, but that doesn't make them evil "rechtsradikale" Germans. They just don't want to see Germany turn into say Texas, Arizona or worse California and New York. They're not supporting the wickedness against which many people were protesting the last few days, though. My point, you'll find decent people in the most unexpected places. Troubles rhey won't last forever.

Yes, it‘s so important to clear the head and get perspective. Walking is the best for that for me.
Lovely piano music in the background.
Isn‘t it just? The music in my videos is really important to me, I‘m glad you liked it.

@@RobertZander-yz3bgI‘m loving it! Are you converting a building into a hotel, or building new? Or was it previously a hotel? I love the series „The Hotel Inspector“. So much to think about- I hope you get lovely guests.
@@LaureninGermany
The hotel was already a hotel that changed hands during the Corona period and is now finally getting the urgently needed renovation.

Genau!
3:41 "And for those of you who don't speak German, 'Leichen' is the German word for 'corpse.'"
😆 And with that fact, ich bin eine Leiche.
😂 I could hardly bear to say it! I cut the music almost on top of it!
I understand these feelings, and I just want to say that there truly is so much to be proud of about Germany. And the Germans.
(So much the more mind boggling it is that Geert Wilders, who spoke at PEGIDA rallies to swastika-fas, has been elected there…)
I am a huge fan of Itchy Boots, a Dutch lady who is travelling the world by motorcycle and documenting her journey on UA-cam videos.
@@LaureninGermany It is reassuring to experience that the majority after all isn't as insane as it seems.
There is no line, you are right zweispurmopped. I studied the origins of languages to a certain, very small, extent and we are almost all connected, if you go back far enough.
@@LaureninGermany 🤗
... and her voice ❤
awwwww....!!! xxxxx
Exactly. So precious, that‘s why I feel the need to bring it up.
If you talk about revolting, your voice makes that topic very relaxed.
That litchen (?) On the stone are "Flechten".

Ah, that suits it- it looks like flechten on clothes!
So ... as far as there are guillotines with lichen on in Germany everything seems to be okay, haha! :`D You are so diplomatic, I wish I also could be like that! :-) Thank you for making me laugh, your video is precious in many ways, as always.
In Germany we say it brings you luck if a bird shits on you. 🙂

I am so glad I made you laugh, I thought I might seriously worry people with my weird humour this time 😂
@@LaureninGermany Why, it`s lovely!
