- The video was recorded in a private house of Teges, a village south of Ubud during special funeral ceremonies called "mekingsan di geni" for a deceased man aged 78. The corpse is lying on a table covered with white clothes, under a canopy decorated with gold cardboard and flowers. The priest seats in a throne of bamboos facing the body of the dead man. The pedanda (high priest in Balinese language) starts praying after adorn himself with precious stone rings, colorful necklaces and the gold and red tiara. When in action his hands gestures are full of grace and beauty. These hand movements are known as "mudra". The word "mudra" means "sign". When the high priest utters the sacred incantation, his hands make certain gestures as signs to express the words of sacred incantation with movements.
In Bali "mudra" is called "patanganan", or movement of the hand. These hand movements are part of three elements that must unite in order to communicate with God. These three elements are mind (the memory of sacred incantation (mantra), voice (the utterance of sacred incantation), and movement (hand gesture that translate the sacred incantation into movement). It is said that the Balinese dances are based on the beauty of the mudra.
Pedanda, the brahmana high priest of Bali, is a special man who have the right and knowledge to perform and officiate religious ceremonies either in temples or in private houses, when he is kindly invited like this case. The pedanda serves as a bridge between God and mortals.

Aquest vídeo és una petita part de l'enregistrament de les cerimònies funeràries i el procès a que van sotmetre el cadàver d'un home que va traspassar als 78 anys, abans de dur-lo al cementiri per incinerar-lo. Ens trobem al pati d'una casa particular al vilatge de Teges, al sud d'Ubud. El cos del difunt jau sota el "bale dangin", el pavelló obert més important d'una casa balinesa. Un sudari blanc, cobert de teles daurades i grogues, embolcalla el cadàver. La casa és plena de convidats. Abans d'arribar el sacerdot (pedanda, en balinès), la família entreté els assistents amb pastissets, tasses de cafè i l'embolcall de la música que toca una orquestra de gamelan. Tan aviat arriba el pedanda s'abilla assegut a la plataforma de canyes de bambú alçada davant el cadafalc on posaran el cadàver. És una plataforma coberta amb una tela blanca i un petit tàlem decorat amb papers daurats i flors. El sacerdot comença els rituals. Els moviments de les mans són expressions dels encanteris que realitza per comunicar-se amb l'ànima traspassada. La finalitat és assenyalar-li el camí que ha d'emprendre per atènyer el món invisible. En sànscrit, els gestos de les mans del sacerdot es diuen "mudra". A Bali, "patanganan". El vídeo es limita exclusivament a mostrar l'exerci gestual de les mans del pedanda. Moviments bellíssims transmesos per la casta brahmànica de generació en generació. Es remunten a l'època que l'hinduisme va generar-se a la vall de l'Indus, potser tres mil anys enrere. Hi ha qui diu que les danses balineses s'han abeurat de la mística i la bellesa gestual d'uns moviments que són l'intent d'expressar físicament els encanteris que emanen de l'esperit del sacerdot.

Yes. Religion of Balinese is a melting pot of Shaivism, Vaishnavism, and Buddhism (Vajrayana Buddhism as in Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan). Actually there were many sects of Hinduism in Bali (Shaiva, Vaishanava, Smarta, Saura, Ganapatya, Shakta, etc). One day, priests of the sects, along with Buddhist priest, created a forum and agreed that Balinese will have one believe system called Shiva Siddhanta. They recognize Shiva as main form of the Highest Truth. The formless Highest Truth is called Acintya (unimaginable), akin to Nirguna Brahman, Paramatman, Parabrahman, Paramashiva, Mahavishnu, Shakti (depends on each sect) or Dharmakaya Buddha, Adibuddha. But, philosophies of other schools or sects are already incorporated eg. every village has 3 main temples for Trimurti concept, fierce Durga Devi idol for Shaktism, every house has shrine for Surya (Saura concept), taksu shrine (Saraswati), etc. Small singhasans are placed on house walls eg. near water pump or well for Vishnu (they believe Vishnu is god with water element), in the kitchen for Brahma (they believe Brahma has fire element), etc. Every Black Wednesday, they worship Batara Rambut Sedana, Lakshmi, and Sri for prosperity. They have Galungan similar to Gudi Padwa or Vishu. For a grand religious ceremony, priests from the three sects (Shaiva, Vaishnava, and Buddha) lead the ceremony together.
