For context: "Mom, I am a rich man" is a nod to the singer Cher. Her mother was nagging her to find and settle down with a rich man, and her response was, "Mom, I am a rich man." This was during an interview where she commented that men were a luxury, not a necessity. We love a self-sufficient, successful queen.

Taylor’s song Bad Blood was about Katy Perry then Katy Perry did a diss song called Swish,Swish. So at the end of this video we see them basically squishing the “beef” bc Taylor was being “salty” 🍔🍟

A couple more things: 1) I love how many people note she’s spitting proper bars in the first verse; 2) the verse is properly “why are you mad when you could be GLAAD” - the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation; 3) Ryan has a scene of the Stonewall Riots next to his painting of the trailer park. I didn't realize it wasn't Taylor swift singing that verse but that drag queen is so pretty too.

The "Mom, I am a rich man" is a quote from Cher. In an interview in the 80s or 90s, Cher was talking about how, despite her tremendous success, her mom would tell her she needed to marry a rich man. That was her response , "Mom, I am a rich man" meaning whatever you think a rich man could do for her, Cher could do for herself. I am guessing Taylor used that as a jab to the "why aren't you married yet" haters. Plus Cher is pretty iconic in the LBGTQA community.

Yes you got it exactly right! Let people live their lives. Also: so funny you mentioned Katy and then there she was! They had a famous feud (Taylor wrote "Bad Blood" about it), but then they made up and having her in the video was like "See? we're cool." You missed the earlier line: she said, "I see you over there on the internet/comparing all the girls who are killing it," and she says "we figured it out: we all have crowns," and then repeats stop stepping on our gowns. Meaning: there can be more than one successful female, stop pitting them against each other. We all have crowns!

I don't listen to "react to" videos often, BUT you are really funny and I feel like I am getting an "enhanced version" of her music videos. So I have a better understanding as you see things I wouldn't notice and interpret lyrics in a what I missed. I always understood that this song was also to smooth things over from something Taylor said or did that upset the LGBT community. There is also the Katy Perry issue that is addressed in the video with the hamburger and french fries costumes and them "hugging it out" around the end of this video. There are a lot of references to being "gay" like wearing a crown, not to step on my gown, and more straightforwardly, "...because shade never made anybody less gay."
Not really to smooth things over, but to clarify. She discusses it in Miss Americana, when she basically breaks her father’s hold on her career as she’s changing record labels. She talks about needing to make political statements, to make it clear she’s a feminist, and how horrified she was that her queer friends had to ask if she supported them because they didn’t know. It’s not really a coincidence that this song came out with Lover, either - Big Machine didn’t want her saying anything that “might alienate her country audience.” 🙄
A little after this song came out, she also gave an interview saying that it took her a long time to realize she could advocate for communities she is not a direct member of.
