my headcanon for these things is that the cave the dwarves are working in isnt actually "haunted", but circulated with high amounts of morkite fumes seeping in from other cave systems, creating an atmosphere enough to induce 'cave madness'. it's enough to have the dwarves manifest this hallucination into being - any time this thing attacks, it's actually the dwarves hurting themselves in confusion
I agree with the 3 replies on this comment. Also both the terrain scanner and laser pointer can pick up and detect the ghost. It also doesn't make sense for the dwarves to see the same hallucination at the same time in the same place all at once.
I think those were once normal glyphids until one day they got themself deeper into precursor sites, which constructions we rarely see with laser pointer (error terrains, dna-looking pillars and error cube). Somethings completely changed their appearance and overall behaviour, like they are posessed, they always know where you are and follow you since you set your foot on the mission ground.
Personally i subscribe to the idea that they are bulk detonators that, having gone through so much pain and suffering in their lives due to their condition, end up as tortured souls who refuse to move on to the afterlife.
One thing I love about this noise is because of the way it sounds I'm 100% convinced these sounds are reversed. Like something went terribly wrong in order to make the haunted caves a thing. Like out of all the caves, this few ones are where something was out of order, a behemoth that not even death can succumb it and still haunts the cave. And how instead of the noises it makes starting loud then quiet, like a usual screech. All the sounds it emits go loud, then quiet. Like something was out of order. It makes me wonder, what enrages something like bulk detonator, the largest, most menacing enemy in the game, to make it want to stay within the bounds of the cave? And hunt only dwarves. How long has the apparition been there? Eternity? When a detonator dies, it violently explodes. Then why is this one's body still intact? The larger the creature, the more intelligent. This is seen in the case of Manta Rays, Whales, and Elephants. Maybe the detonators aren't mindless drones who chase the dwarf, only to explode them, or be exploded. What if it's more than that? The regular detonator already sounds like it's in pain, or calling for help. And now the noises are reversed in the Unknown Horror, almost as it's the help calling out in response to the cries. Is that why the Unknown Horror is so prevalent? Is it the literal personification of the inevitable grasp of death? These few cases are the only time a Detonator hasn't died by being reduced to ash. Is it, the deliverer of people to a safe death? Even the biggest, meanest Glyphids, and the most violent, experienced Dwarves? Is that why it chases the dwarves, deeper, and deeper into the caves. Because an explosion death is instant, yet being mauled by aliens and ripped to shreds is painful, and slow. What if the Unknown Horror isn't violent, it's merciful. Is the Unknown Horror, horrifying because it's unknown? Or is it terrifying because it symbolizes something every dwarf knows: A looming death is coming while you're on Hoxxes IV, and you cannot stop it no matter how many times you shoot through it.
Today, I killed a Crassus Detonator and was pretty chuffed with all the gold I got out of it. Then my assignment sent me on a Haunted Elimination mission. I'm gonna go ahead and assume that the Dreadnought and Twins were backed up by the same CD I killed on the last mission, especially since it was waiting for me right outside the drop pod!
@@simonockas that there are literal ghosts of dead bulk detonators haunting the planet. Usually ghosts are depicted as sentient life forms that either have unfinished business or have died in horrific ways binding them to this plane. What does that imply for the unknown horror? Seems to add a horrific undertone to the funny goofy dwarf game
I personally like them, it adds some mystery to it, I'm assuming the det model is a placeholder or whatever. all the other unknown alien stuff could be argued as unnecessary (like the error cubes, the weird monoliths in azure weald, and other things) but I really like them, adds a lot of mystery to what is on the surface a silly dwarf game, I like it having that depth, that way lore nerds (like me) have something to chew on plus come on its a way cool mechanic and enemy type
My headcanon is that Crassus detonators turn into Unknown Horrors, because they actually like being gold and you killing them for money makes them really pissed
Im sure you didnt listened this sounds while playing, kinda "Rock and Stone brothers" "Gold!" "Dig here" "Nitraaaaaaaaaaaaa" "Stop shooting me" and other voicelines with marker to that horror, but i cant remember them
One thing that always interests me is that when you look at the icon for haunted cave, it shows not only the bulk detonator but also macterra grabbers and one other i cant remember. Were more variants of unknown horror planned based on other creatures on hoxxes, but were scrapped in development? Also i feel if you subscribe to the idea ghosts appear when tortured souls refuse to move on to the afterlife, it makes sense they of all things would become ghosts. Their entire lives spent as shambling tumor filled monsters, probably in agony, would be perfect fuel for a tortured soul. If the devs realized this it could be a reason why the others were scrapped, as they wouldnt have nearly as much in-lore reasoning to become ghosts. EDIT: I AM REFERRING to the ACHIEVEMENT icon. The mission icon simply has a ghost on it.
@thetsarofall8666 well the teaser for season 5 was out in a stream and well you're not wrong. or at least these are not the only ones that could be unkillable or becoming invisible though. this aged well.
I would rather say they're extra dimensional rather than ghosts, which is what makes them able to hurt us but not to get hurt, and it's pretty arguable you'd find extra dimensional stuff in deep space (let's not forget that the game goes to extremes when dealing wirh the unknown, for example a fucking black hole drink that teleports you WITH NO ASTRONAUT GEAR to the outside of the ship and all you get is frozen temporarily lmao)
I first saw haunted caves pop up when the Halloween event started and thought it's just gonna be a seasonal thing, so I entered without reading what it's about. I was in for a huge surprise.

“Confusion”
Driller throwing a block of C4 at the Scout intentionally every three minutes.
Yeah makes no sense at all since morkite ain't toxic
Pretty sure hallucinations can’t carve through rocks

local bulk detonator too angry to die
this sounds so much like those deep sea/space recording videos
I don't like the implications that this thing's existence has on the lore of the game

Where do you see the achievement icon? I've been looking for it but can't find it
he's talking about the milestone icon in the perk terminal, which is in your cabin ingame
