- The most acclaimed motion picture of 1985 stars Robert Redford and Meryl Streep in one of the screen's great epic romances. Directed by Oscar® winner Sydney Pollack, Out of Africa is the fascinating true story of Karen Blixen, a strong-willed woman who, with her philandering husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer), runs a coffee plantation in Kenya, circa 1914. Out of Africa, Chariots of Fire, and Gandhi were three of the 80's finest films. They encapsulate a time that's long gone and now even the 80's has an aura of romantic distance.
Not leaving the color purple behind again. 😒
@@bimbam9603 Never saw it, thanks for the tip!
The Year Of Living Dangerously also belongs there.
@@vivianpowell1732 110% agree! Yes!
About four years ago we visited Karen Blixen's house in Denmark. There you can see the room where she did her writing, the gifts given to her by her staff in Kenya, and her grave. She is buried in the garden of her house.
Her Kenya house is now a museum. It was mostly filmed there
The movie is wonderful. In reality it says much more than appears. But its music is marvelous. The end shed my tears😢
It was done beautifully. The scenes were incredible. And the cast sublime. Redford was natural and charming. Such a fantastic actor.
One of the best movies ever made.
Agreed 👏🏻 John Barry's sound track take it to another level 👌🏻
One of my favorite Robert Redford films along with his portrayal of The Great Gatsby. Classics for me
Her wedding outfit,just gorgeous 😍
The costumes in this movie were all stunning!
This movie was a beautiful work of art. Loved it. And all of the views of the African landscape are stunning. So sad at times though.
A powerful and well made film. The actual Karen Blixen was such a remarkable and fascinating woman.
Who knows? Meryl Streep was likely MORE remarkable and fascinating??
The excellent Michael Kitching as Barkley Cole at the end - debonair, relaxed, a gentleman and a bit of a flirt 😊 A sad sub-plot for his story through the film.
I don't understand why Michael Kitchen never played the romantic lead in a movie with a sensual storyline. You can see from his brief scenes in this movie that he has an irresistible and intelligent appeal.
Just watched this movie and man it was beautiful. Can’t believe I haven’t seen this movie before.
Surprisingly enough, a week or so ago my Chinese wife asked me to check out this movie from our local library as I go there a lot. Last night, we watched it together and this morning we discussed it in some detail. It seems she watched it in China many years ago. She told me that the movie is based on the life of an actual lady from Denmark, Karen Blixen. I Googled her this morning and read a little about her. I'd like to learn more. As for the movie, the scenery was so beautiful. I saw this morning that the movie won an Academy Award for best cinematography. That's not surprising. I noticed that the title says that Robert Redford and Meryl Streep owned a coffee plantation in Kenya. Did the character portrayed by Redford actually have an ownership interest in the plantation? The best to you.
That’s awesome mate .
When Robert Redford is pouring the water to rinse her hair, for that moment her face is more beautiful than anyone else in the world. 😍
By Jove! You are right!
After experiencing this film in a theatre, returned to my car in the parking lot, and wept. And now, listening to tones of those voices, music and observing especially, rich interior of the Muthaiga Club..where Izak Dineson was initially ushered to a hall, and later, after all, was stood a whiskey, a sense of poignancy, reverie and longing returns.
Streep and Redford did not own the coffee farm. It was her Danish husband. One of my favorite movies. Gorgeous score by John Barry.
Unforgettable movie. Everything is perfect. Thanks for sharing. 👍🔥👌
This film fueled my passion for travel. I will be traveling to Kenya next year and hope to visit as many sites associated with Karen Blixen (both in real life and in the movie) as I possibly can.
Cinema fueled my passion in Mt tern years. The rest is now history and 60 countrues. I work and live to travel. This year Kenya. I've been to South Africa and Tanzania ❤
@@avs6372omg hope to hear from you about Kenya trip this year
This was the best film I've ever watched.
Yes, "Out of Africa" and "Anna and the King" with Jodie Foster and Chow Yun Fat are my #1 and #2 favorite movies. They are both breathtaking in every way.
I always loved this movie too . Meryl's portrayal of isek densen is great as usual , as she has portrayed other characters so well. Believe this is my favorite Meryl Streep movie.
I'd watched this movie many years ago but watched again last night. Absolutely great? You mentioned Meryl Streep. Yes, fantastic, especially her accent. I checked on Wikipedia a few minutes ago and it said she was born in New Jersey. How was she able to do the accent so well. I would assume that's what an actress does, but she did it so well.
I have alwayyys loooved this movie, watched it in 1985 when I was heartbroken because of a love I could not live. Meryl Streep has been my favourite actress ever since, also being proud of "Bror" Klaus-Maria Brandauer, as my countryman. The bitter-sweet love between Karen and Denys is hopeless as they are so different; yet, one hopes against all odds. Such a brave woman. Only one hour before the wedding and no wedding ring, and she is forced to think of the man who she has just met and who entrusted her with his ivory. This is fate. He makes her happy and desperate beyond all imagination. I will always charish this movie, its profound questions of love, passion and life.
Hi Suzanne
Her first love was actually Barkley Cole. There is a real attraction between them but he is already with his African mistress.
Such a nice comment.
Susanne ... I think Karen Blixen's [Isak Dinesen] "Out of Africa" is one of the great feminist stories of all time, and one of the greatest true stories of the 20th century ... Karen von Blixen is able to survive all types of adversity: life in Africa in the early 20th Century, a philandering husband who gives her syphilis, a desire to still want an enduring nonmarital relationship with Denys Finch only to have his life suddenly snatched away from her, yet somehow remaining stoically able to go on with her life is truly remarkable ... Bart
and, although I'm a Vietnam Era USAF "TAC" Pilot, the movie's tone & tenor, coupled with it's incredible soundtrack by John Barry, make me Swoon with it's Romantism each time I watch it ...
I really love a beautiful film like that.
One of my all time fav's watched 13 times
I couldn’t even count how many times I’ve seen it, but I saw it in the theater 4 times. ✌🏼💖

Hi
Best movie I’ve ever seen
amazing movie
I love this movie so much 💞
Hi Catherine
Turned my stomach to see Finchatten loading those elephant tusks (even if they weren't real)! I probably didn't notice it when I originally saw the film and I bet directors would not use that scene today (thankfully). Poor elephants!
Same same I was like 😢
❤️My ULTIMATE film ....❤️❤️❤️❤️🌍‼️🙌
That's me in one of my past lives

Életem legszebb, legjobb filmje. de magyar szinkronnal az igazi.
Is there a 35th Anniversary edition? The above looks much more crisp than anything out there on blu ray! (which dates back to when it was remastered in 2012 for the 100th Anniversary of Universal).

SPOILER ALERT
When she whispers “he was not mine…” at his funeral … it’s one of the all-time cinematic gut punches. 😭
I can only see clips how did ya watch all the movie?
Good morning
This Is my film.
ChinA I know it can break 😝
Those times of The British Empire
pure evil
If someone can explain to me what Barclay Cole is talking about when he says about the dances at Oxford and the perfume being similar? I can find absolutely nothing online and it’s driving me crazy, is it meant to mean something?
I think he is flirting with the new bride in a respectful manner. Also he may have been feeling nostalgic about his youth as a young man in his home land. The smell of Karen's perfume triggered a memory of a girl he was sweet on perhaps?
@@tjjurake3506 That’s interesting, you might be right.
Barkley is British upper class. He studied at Oxford Univeristy. It was customary to invite the girl you admired to a ball/dance. The girl would dress up ("a new silk dress") and wear a special perfume. Karen's perfume reminds him of the perfume of a girl in Oxford whom he took to the dance. He is being melancholy about it. Obviously, he is homesick and nostalgic. There is a special bond between Barkley and Karen: a deep friendship develops.
@@susannealawneh4205 Yeah I think that could be it, I was thinking maybe the girl at Oxford might have been someone significant.
@@susannealawneh4205 In the movie she tells Bror that when he leaves her she will marry Berkeley Cole. They seemed to mesh from the very start. Thank goodness she had Berkeley as a friend.
Yo, Meryl streep and Klaus Maria Brandauer own the plantation
Robert Redford isn't her partner who had a coffee farm with her! This was Klaus Maria Brandauer - Redford was a safari hunter... You should better inform yourself 🤔
This my favorite movie
Hi Monika
You should stop INFORMING people and not act the snob

*A selfish husband who was having affairs when he wasn't at home...*
*A charming and solitary man who was a survivor and a hunter, after that murdered.*
*What an "unlucky in love" woman.* 🤷♀️ Meryl Streep is definitely a great actress. 👆
all are elf
There are so many distasteful things in this film I’ve never realised before like the tusks, the black servants, sexism etc
Good God, go cry about it.
What spoiled the movie for me was Robert Redford..strange how some actors just dont make the grade …
I believe this is Robert Redford's best movie. The way his character Denys looks at Karen throughout conveys deep passion. He doesn't have to say a word.
The only thing here is that Streep does not do a very good Danish person speaking English. And the Austrian guy sounds Austrian. To be fair, it's a very hard and and the differences might not code well with an English audience
The dynamic flare nearly earn because agenda subcellularly live about a soggy license. rampant, towering step-son
The film really good, watched it long time ago
Why are the Africans dressed like that ?
Traditional attire
The Africans were created with dark skins, but who cares? There are many blacks who are so talented. I can name a few in different fields of endeavor: Education- Booker T Washington; Movies- Sidney Poitier; Entertainment,-Whitney Houston;; Beauty pageant- Zuzibini Tunzi- Ms Univ 2019; Sports- Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali; Politics- Barack Obama, US Pres. There are so many more.
That dark skin is absolutely gorgeous though! Why anyone would dislike it is not something I understand.
He steals her money and does business that was bound to fail. Talk of undermining women. And still goes on. She wanted to educated Kenyan children and they make her baren. And Africa chief gives her instructions and not to educate the children to certain age. The world has not moved on ever since. Sad!
