I have a pet theory that Susie is so defiant of the player that you will never get to fight her because she knows it will be the best revenge she can inflict.
@@jamesverner9132my own theory is that in a hypothetical weird route final boss, she’d kill herself right before you get the finishing blow, just to deprive you of the satisfaction. While yeah, that’s extremely dark, so is puppeteering Kris into gaslighting their childhood friend into becoming essentially a machine of war. Besides, wouldn’t be the first time Toby tackled that subject (or even showed it, Asgore does something similar if you spare him after subsequent neutral runs)
@92 it would be refreshing to see both susie and ralsei come out on top against you in the weird route. and that would truly prove that this is their story too, and you don't get you choose how it ends. and that would prove both of them right. that your choices didnt matter. and that by going down this path you won't find the result favorable.
@@chongwillson972 that's what i think too - weird route ending will be kind of a face off of ralsei, susie, and possibly kris if they reveal somehow that they're being possessed
@@tearsofthekingdom9062 so, what you are saying is that there is more evidence of her going to become evil later? all we need to do now is ignore any character development because of course its acting, duh. she is hiding her past which just means she untrustworthy. and she can resist the player which means against, and we are side of good. all of this and other things point to susie secretly being evil.
To be fair she’s a complicated character just not like in terms of ethics. She’s pretty much an open book and reacts as such. Unlike Kris and Ralsei who are pretty secretive or quiet
So, about Susie easily falling asleep, that was one of the detail I decided to analyse a bit. And l noticed that, it's not only with Ralsel singing, but every single time Susie feel comfortable, she just, fall asleep not even a second after. For example, she say that she took a nap in the bush (when we create the machine), and that it's basically her home, showing some sense of comfort in it. And at the end of chapter 2, just before falling asleep, she said that she was going to make herself comfortable. This fact, to me, is another proof that Susie home life is very far from being the best. I mean, if so little is enough to make her literally fall asleep, it's possible comfort don't exist for her. I would also like to talk about how Susie act very childishly for her age, in chapter two, the second her intimidating mask fall, she show an attitude that was unexpected, being that she is exactly like Lancer, she follow is weird shenanigans, have fun with it, and call herself a badass name. Personally. I found it wholesome.
its kinda funny you point out that susie acts like lancer in chapter 2 when you take into account that people have also theorized that ralsei could be who kris desires/desired to be (given the fact that kris's family is comprised of goat monsters/kris's red horned hairband is ralsei's counterpart theory.) kinda makes me wonder if chapter 1 is really just some weird form of collective escapism for kris and susie that ultimately drew them together.
@@trafferty And Queen is the counterpart to Berdly and Noelle, maybe? It's not as clear cut as the other two but Berdly sees Queen as an equal, she's someone he wants to be: smart, respected, powerful. And for Noelle, while she doesn't want to be Queen, the antagonist believes in her and drives her to be more confident and decisive, something Noelle desperately needs in order to act on her feelings for Susie and stand up to her mother Idk I'm just spitballing here
personally, i feel like her attitude in chapter 2 is a pretty big leap in character development, and i wouldve loved to see that growth drawn out over atleast another chapter?
Her brute forcing of puzzles to me was showing an underlying willingness to self-harm. When she says 'Damn, I didn't get to impale myself' you could interpret it as her making a joke, but I think she was just trying to play it off as a joke.
oh my god, you just made me realise something when you asked who reacted in the most realistic manner 😂 just imagining Susie yelling "the hell's going on, I need to get the f out of here", Ralsei just standing there like the most stereotypical guide NPC telling you about THE PROPHECY, all the while Kris is being controlled by the player and doing some random 360 no scope movements, teabagging, jumping up and down and running at speeds faster than intended *because* they're being controlled by the player's inputs. Susie - the source of common sense Ralsei - Skyrim NPC Kris - player character
Additionally, Susie was at school a few minutes prior falling into another world through a chasm that essentially behaves like an RPG and everyone's like "durrr you're being a bad hero" while, come on, let's be realistic here, who here would just take all of that at face value and NOT freak out? I break the *6th* wall on a daily basis and this would still feel like I'm being hurled into a wall after being soaked in milk. Of COURSE she's freaking out. Imagine getting some chalk for your teacher and suddenly you fall through the floor and you're doing a boss fight.
HAHA right as you mentioned Susie wagging her tail, I was already wagging my foot (long story short - I conditioned myself to wag my foot when I'm happy because that's the closest thing to having a tail like a dog).
I wanna add something to your idea that Ralsei thinks Susie's clothes fight each other that clicked in my mind when you put that idea in my head; Ralsei FIGHTS with a SCARF. He probably thinks clothes being used to fight is normal, so the idea of "clothes fighting each other" wouldn't seem foreign and would make a ton of sense to Ralsei, and absolutely no one else! This makes the already cute assumption of Ralsei's even cuter considering the context.
My only problem is, this has to be Susie specific and perhaps wasn't even intentionally done by Ralsei. The same guy who knows way too much about the light world than most darkners doesn't know that clothes don't fight each other in the light world? No. He'd obviously know it's something unusual.
28:25 I think that Ralsei's choice of team name is better to analyze in regards to Susie. Paraphrasing but: Lancer: "...Legendary heroes: the herald of fun and friendship?" Ralsei: "Oh, that's mine! Because we're all friends who like to have a lot of fun" Susie: "okay, first: jeez, that's a mouthful. Second: what kinda name is that? What are the enemies going to think, that we're gonna be BUDDIES with them? Our name has to be COOL! INTIMIDATING! BADASS!" Ralsei: "...Like what?" Susie (unsure): "Uhh, like You know, how about um... JUST uh... The Fun Gang..? You know uh, just really focusing on the Fun part" Lancer: "Perfect!" Also, from Lancer's choice: Ralsei: "Lancer, why do YOU get tonpick our name?" Susie: "He didn't, Kris did" Very nice coming from miss "your choices don't matter"
This is obviously just a coincidence because Chapter 1 came out years before but "Legendary Heroes: The Herald of Fun and Friendship" sounds like a name ChatGPT would come up with lol
43:46 I think the reason she doesn’t reequip the Mane Ax is simply “she doesn’t want a downgrade.” Every other axe weapon has better stats than the Mane Ax.
@Eeeg_yea Thanks! Funny thing is I get this alot. The other reply is the first time I've got like someone react negatively to my pfp. All those memes of "oh someone with a trans profile pic enters the YT comments and all the transphobes begin screaming" when that hasn't really been the case. (Also based get a life. Saying "your pfp is cringe" in someone's replies is cringe go touch grass.)
Susie definitely also shows what is called hostile attribution bias (bias toward attributing hostile intent to others’ actions, including and especially with actions that an objective observer may deem neutral or even positive), which is seen more often with abused, bullied, depressed, socially anxious, and bullying/aggressive kids.
43:37 Susie’s old design from old concept art had her hair up in a ponytail, and she seemed like a much more upbeat person. Maybe she’s put it on in a later chapter
There's also a special dialogue when you try to give her the white ribbon. She says she's not a third (or first) grader to wear smth like that anymore. Perhaps implying that in her childhood she used to have a ribbon or other accessory to hold up her hair.
43:36 Reads more like a hairbrush or a toothbrush, to me! Which makes sense because she cares about her appearance but doesn't have many resources to refine it (better clothes), so she's just doing what she can (taking care of her hair and/or teeth)
A fun theory that i came up with is that Lancer and his dynamic with his father is a representation of Susie's home life. Lancer loves playing rough and fighting, eats weird things, and mentions not being given Dark Candy. I'm especially convinced by this since Chapter 2 was really focused on Noelle's relationship with her mother, chapter 3 will probably be about Kris and Toriel's relationship, so it would make sense for chapter 1 to be about another main character.
The relationship between Lancer and King is odd but weirdly cute. His dad is tough on Lancer but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t love his son. Threatening to drop Lancer off the castle roof wasn’t even a real threat because Lancer would have just bounced. It was just to scare Susie. Queen and King might have been a thing in the past given how they talk about each other and Queen mentions King is a slob who barely takes care of himself. King defends it by saying he gets what he needs and insults Queen for how indulgent she is. King is an angry slob of a man but cares about his kid inspite of how rough and scary he comes off initially. It’s probably why Lancer attached himself to Susie so easily and wasn’t phased by her threats because he’s seen this before.
Good video! I'd like to point out though, there IS another notable change with Susie during Snowgrave that you didn't mention. Right before you go seal the fountain, she stops and leaves to check on Noelle, something that doesn't actually happen during a normal route
I don't think Susie has Alexithymia. We can cleary see that she is very good at expressing emotion, especially negative ones, since the negative emotions are probably the ones she's been exposed to the most. She doesn't express or understand positive emotions specifically, because she just jasn't had many positive exeriences in life. I think she just can't understand that the enemies she encounters aren't really that keen to fight, because she cant understand that type of emotion specifically, hence her assuming they all want her dead. I think in at the end of Chapter 3 is when we will see Susie's home life, and this is when she will finally begin understanding all emotions in a way she hasn't before. One last thing: I have a theory about the plot to Chapter 4. I think that at the end of Chapter 3, we will get a cutscene of Susie going home, and finally see just how broken her home life is, if she has a home at all. After a fight with her parents, she becomes angry enough to create a Dark Fountain in her own home, and will be either a side or main villian in Chapter 4, returning to her emotional repression. After confronting her, and coming close to taking her down, she will begin to actually cry. All the emotional baggage will release as she begs you to stop, and let her live in this world where she controlls everything, and can finally live the life she always wanted. This would be a really empowering moment, and would make sense for it to be a midway point in the story of the full game. Plus, it would just be really cool to see the badass Susie break down in tears. Edit: I also think Kris speaks more often than we give them credit for. It is implied that they do actually respond to questions people ask them, and it's also implied that they does actually speak on his own in certain situations. But the most damning piece of evidence is after the Spamton NEO fight, where if you answer Susie's question of "Are you okay?" with no, Ralsei notes how Kris is yelling, not only are they actually speaking up for one, but they are yelling, which from what we know is something unheard of for Kris. It's quite possible they don't speak much anymore because Asriel was really the only person they talked to. Regardless, it's interesting that Kris os beginning to believe the delusions of both Jevil and Spamton, terrifying them so much that they actually show something more than a neutral emotion.
Not gonna lie, what you said about chapter 4? I actually LEGIT wanna see that, wondering what the hell happens to her parents in said dark world however
I legitimately like hearing some of the scientific background behind some of your analysis. That “emotional blindness” explanation as well as the meaning behind Kris’ goosebumps after the Spamton NEO stuff give some neat understanding and background on what’s going on with certain characters.
I have heard a certain theory flying around, that when or if Susie learns about our control over Kris, she will have some sort of crisis. “Was this person, one of my first freinds and my now (non darkner) best freind, never *really* there? Was it not them at all? Which parts were real?” And she may do something rash. This could be backed up by her saying something similar too “If [the dark world] isn’t there, will we still be…” in chapter two. I think this theory fits well with this dialogue. She thinks that if the fun bonding they had in the dark world was just some sort of trip, then they won’t be freinds anymore. Obviously this isn’t the best way to word it, but it does play into the themes of escapism. I myself can speak for this. Most of my friendships are formed over interests, and I do wonder sometimes, “if one of us stops liking this thing, will we even be freinds?” “Do I even like you, even though we bonding over this shared intrest?” It’s a genuine fear, and I really hope it’s one Susie has. Susie is scared that she and Kris don’t have a *real* connection outside of the dark world adventures, and learning Kris was being controlled would only validate this fear, at least to a certain degree Edit: 46:32 just watched this bit, basically said the same as me just different lmao Edit 2: 1:15:10 WOW, really just takin the words outta my mouth huh lol?
I 100% agree. But I also feel like there'd be another side to her. She'd feel disturbed. The only thought running through her head after finding out being, "What the actual hell did I just learn?" She had already seen a little bit of Spamton's living situation of being a puppet, and it had left her shaken. But only to find out that the same exact thing was happening to her best friend all along and she had never known would also leave her shaken. She would definitely try her hardest to stop the player from interfering with her best friend's life.
I actually think that when Susie was threatening to bite Kris's face off as a way to get expelled for some "REAL carnage" I think she was thinking that if she did that, she could go to jail or prison or some shit like that, and therefore, not have to deal with whatever her home and school life is like.
I relate to Susie a lot throughout both of the chapters, and I don’t think there was ever a time I disliked her character, even in those first 30 seconds where she’s just a massive prick. It reminded me of how I acted when I was that age lol This deeper look into the character definitely puts it into perspective for me, what a phenomenally written deuteragonist
I take stuff at face value, or fear value, too readily. So I relate to Susie, and Kris, and Noelle. Just not 100% each. Way more than most characters, they feel much more well written. Even to Berdley I can relate. But, prolly Kris the most. If my hunch is right.
I wonder if we'll ever see Susie's homelife directly? It'd be interesting considering we'd see Susie being beaten by her father, only for Kris, who always carries a knife, to show up. it could lead to quite the plot development.
that's way too direct for toby. he'd at most very heavily imply it, or maybe use a secret boss to convey her abuse without actually depicting it. that being said, that the light world menu still has LV is suspicious
@@Colddirector way too direct under what presumption? we've already been able to force Kris to groom an innocent teenage girl who they grew up with into being a serial murderer. I really don't think anything is inherently off the table in Deltarune except SA, which seems too extreme for the narrative, for example.
@@Green-3c34y65vrbu i mean even then the snowgrave route is shrouded in ambiguity. it's kept vague whether the darkners noelle froze are dead (only snowgrave is outright labelled as fatal), and even berdly's fate is left pointedly ambiguous. And the ambiguity isn't just Toby pulling his punches or whatever, it's IMO what makes the weird route so impactful - a lot of it is left up to your imagination, which will always be more disturbing than anything he could depict.
My favorite part of these two chapters has been Kris and Susie’s friendship. I’m looking forward to seeing more of them in the future. We’ll see if anything goes horribly wrong.
susie is easily one of toby's best characters and im so glad this video brings up points i havent seen many others discuss!! honestly i would kill for a fangame that's just a retelling of chapter 1 but from susie's perspective
16:43 i really disagree with this, her rudeness with it is certainly unjustified but stealing food is not inherently wrong, _especially_ for a character who is heavily implied to be near starving. spending a whole part of a video talking about how a character's situation puts them in a really bad position which pushes them to do generally bad things, only to say that something like that is indefensible is... weird, to say the least. not malicious, but weird. something something capitalism bad and don't antagonize poor people.
Hah, i like your thought process. Yeah, common sense infects people's reasonings sometimes. Eventually they will come around, if capitalism doesn't end, the world will end with it.
Not too important but i just wanna say it because i keep hearing people bring this up, I don't think Susie is only one who likes to eat chalk. Alphys says she "can't start class without some" like it's similar to a cup of coffee, not a tool. This might just be common for monsters.
@@QSBraWQ I genuinely think this is just a lizard monster quirk, lol. It would make sense if it was just inconvenient for her to teach without being able to use the chalkboard, but the very specific phrasing of "you know I can't start class without some" feels like a gag.
49:18 you just ignored the whole "My own room... like this." bit. id honestly say she probably doesnt even have a room of her own in the light world, considering her reaction. which also can suggest many things about her home life
this analysis has made me love Susie even more, like she was already my favourite character but i just love her even more now knowing about all that she's been through and her true motivations
I am *very* glad you were convinced to cover the "non-main" routes, because even if they're "optional" or not "canon", the characters are still (almost certainly) true to themselves, and we can still learn more about them from these events. And more specifically, *THIS* dialogue option *right here*; 1:06:51 I love, *LOVE*!! the detail of Kris taking the chance to SCREAM their true feelings the moment you let them. At least that's what I *think* is happening. That was a *messed up* situation with Spamton, and Kris is undoubtedly seeing direct parallels to their own "puppetmaster", us (and/or whatever controls Kris once their soul is out (if indeed it isn't simply Kris in control of themself)). And then we're like "nah little buddy, I get it, tell 'em the truth" and they're *immediately* like "I AM BEING CONTROLLED *RIGHT NOW* AND I AM *VERY* SCARED!" And it's like, yeah! At this point, we've *seen* chapter 1's ending, we *know* that Kris is not us and we are not Kris, and we *just* saw saw Spamton "break", and WE know that THEY know that WE'RE here and we could TOTALLY try and cover it up if we wanted to- And then we don't. We let Kris be honest, and... I can only *imagine* the catharsis in that scream. (I just really wish Kris got a hug and a promise of cake with this option too.)
ima be honest, i only hated susie for like 30 seconds. as soon as she said "You've got a good mother, Kris" I immediately saw right through her and she was my favorite character almost instantly. I wonder if Kris isn't afraid of her because he also realised that she's just mistreated and reclusive, or in other words, he understand her. Like i said Susie is my favorite character, i think for me its gotta be her loyalty, she has a really hard time making friends, but for the few friends that she does make she will defend them to the bitter end. That kind of character is my favorite character archetype, a lot like Undyne and Papyrus come to think of it (guess who my favorite Undertale characters are :) this video was very good and i really appreciate it, thank you for this and i look forward to you Ralsei video
Toby Fox is really a shockingly good writer given how the most he was known for before Undertale was Homestuck music and an edgy Earthbound hack. A few bits I want to comment on real quick: 5:09 A further wrinkle is what it means for _Kris_ to take a bite of the apple. Perhaps they did that just to not let Susie have the last "word". Perhaps they were flirting with Susie (the old 'indirect kiss' thing). Or perhaps they were... basically agreeing with Susie. A "Sure. Go right ahead," sort of gesture. Any of the three would definitely freak Susie out, I think... pity we don't know what Kris whispered to her. 10:56 I kind of wonder about the chalk thing. Susie only just arrived to school then, so either she stole the chalk the previous night (and kept it in her pocket until the following morning?) or she couldn't have been the one to steal the chalk. She might well have done so in the past, of course, but the net result of the chalk being stolen that particular day was that Susie and Kris wound up finding the dark world rather than a teacher. 15:00 Interestingly, something that Susie and Noelle have in common is that they seem to respect Kris for not seeming to be afraid. Susie as you describe here, but Noelle because "everyone knows how weird [Kris is]" 1:01:09 In-game it seems like Susie was in there for more than a minute. Ralsei fell asleep, after all.
The Halloween Hack gets way too much flak for the edgy/swear laden parts IMO. Sure it's aged poorly but it's really unfortunate how it overshadows the interesting ideas and IMO surprisingly good writing that's elsewhere in the hack. Though the wack-ass enemy balancing doesn't help things, either.
@@Colddirector That's fair - it really does deserve better than just "edgy". But even still that's not the sort of resume one expects to see spawn one of the most transformational narratives in the entire video game space.
i may just be mega-projecting but some of susie's traits make me think she may have untreated adhd! it may explain her struggles to do well in class ("you suz, you lose!") and her strong reactions to criticism/perceived criticism is also common in adhd. her dislike of books, especially to do with school projects, may just be because she doesn't find them interesting (adhd, interested based nervous system). and also her strange eating habits/overeating! these all have other explanations but i think it's interesting, and things can overlap! :)
25:48 I think personally it’s because she knows that she’s a wanna be tough guy and she hates seeing herself in others 44:14 I’d assume she has a poor enough home life to not get enough sleep
I identify with susie a lot. She was me, when I was a kid. To see her go through this arc, feels like I'm there, witnessing my old self with compassion, like I had wished someone could do for me. Thanks for encapsulating how important she is a character, especially since we rarely ever get girls like her in anyting.
37:28 I HIGHLY RECOMMEND WATCHING STUFFED ALPACA'S VIDEO “Susie and Ralsei's Relationship Will Be More Important Than You Think”- where they touch on the importance of this interaction! It's an amazing video, go check it out :)
Susie is the best character so far, imo. At least she's the most "real" one. Like, wth is happening with Kris? And Ralsei looks oddly suspicious, too..
Not to say that I dislike the mystery surrounding other characters like Kris, Ralsei, Noelle, etcetera, but Susie's honesty and lack of meta-mishief is such a breath of fresh air. Helps that she's really enjoyable regardless of not being meta.
@@OptimalLeisure Susie _does_ have some meta stuff going on, though. she frequently undermines the player's choices and decides what to do for herself. she's more cooperative in chapter 2 (though she still defies the player at some points), but I would be downright surprised if she doesn't start actively disobeying Kris/the player at some point in a later chapter, likely in the Weird Route.
She just like me fr In all seriousness, this analysis is really great. I really like how you analyzed her character and her growth. This video deserves a lot more attention
I love your description of the start of Chapter 1 from Susies perspective. I feel super sorry for her and it makes her changing her ways even more brave when you lay out how afraid she is.
ok i finally was able to watch the full video and uh the idea that NO dark fountains simply can exist in the end of this story implies one of two things, A. something happened that caused dark worlds to simply be WAY to dangerous thus the light and dark worlds were separated but the darkners never learned why, OR that they were always dangerous but since for most dark worlds, the only way out is sealing the fountain, the balance is usually kept, but when lightners learned of the danger, they stopped. OR perhaps dark fountains arent dangerous at all and ralsei simply was lied to? it just doesnt make since that the light and dark worlds seem to be more connected (evidence from chaos king saying he thinks the lightners abandoned them) but no longer are, unless the danger didnt exist, wasnt as great of a threat as its made to be, or something changed to make a dark worlds uh more volatile for a lack of words i really should just make lore videos instead of making paragraphs in the comments but lazy lol
33:54 I think that the music in the Susie vs Lancer fight perfectly communicates the tone of the scene. It is a theme drenched in sorrow, those winding guitars are just immaculate
43:17 - 43:54 I thought it might’ve been a toothbrush, since the chainsaw auto axe is implied to be an electric toothbrush, like how the mecha saber is a mechanical pencil!
What I like about Susie is that she is morally grey. She'a not afraid to fight if she needs to, but only resorts to violence when she deems it necessary and to be fair, all the times she does resort to it i would agree violence was justified. She's quite perceptive too of others feelings and what concerns me is the possibility of having to fight her and what that migbt mean.
Super entertaining video! Great for any storyteller to fully understand their characters, toby always knocks that out of the park. But for real, this video is really well made and I applaud your efforts!
i can 100% honestly say that my coat is my safety blanket i go absolutely no where without it doesnt matter the weather doesnt matter if i was going to the sahara desert you can place money on it that i will bring my coat
The only "plothole" that it is just not connecting all of this is how she can play video-game? If her home life is in a bad condition, how her family have money to buy video-game? Even her history search in Queen's room does not reveal that she watches any youtube-like gameplay, meaning that she owns a videogame or at least played at some point. If her family is so poor, how she manages to play these games? Or what kind of friend she had before moving to the town that played the game with her? I still think that it is a trolling toby-fox character building that will reveal BOOOM, Susie is rich and her mother is not too different from Noelle's mother, but with the difference that Susie flees from home time to time and her parents are used to it. Just like how Toriel is used to Kris's antics.
Susie having a bad home life doesn't necessarily mean that her family is so poor that they can't afford to have a single video game and a means of playing it. For all we know, Susie could be playing Dragon Blazers via an emulator on a cheap, old PC, or possibly on the library's computers.
as much as I like Kris, I have to say Susie is my favorite character in Deltarune (so far because it might change when future chapters are released), I just love her character, the way she acts in the game etc. Another PEAK character made by Toby Fox
In Chapter 2, it can be assumed that the Queen represents Noelle’s strained relationship with her own mother, helicoptering and controlling aspects of her life. She finally makes a stand against the Queen at the end of the chapter, which in the context of this theory, feels like Noelle finally finding the courage to stand up to her own mother. If this is to be believed, I can’t help but wonder if Susie’s stand against the King in chapter 1 wasn’t an allegory for Susie’s strained relationship with her own abusive/neglectful father? If this is true, then each chapter that we’ve played so far has a character conquering an aspect of their life where they’re deprived of something in the waking world. To add to this with chapter 3 on the horizon, we have been shown 2 characters(Elnina and Lanino) who Toby has stated are madly in love with each other, to an obnoxious degree. With Toriel being present during the creation of the Dark Fountain in the home, it’s safe to assume that she’ll probably be with us throughout the course of Chapter 3. With this narrative in mind, it might allow her to conquer her strained relationship with Asgore after the divorce. Conclusion: Kris might be sleepwalking and subconsciously creating Dark Fountains to help others untangle the troubles in their lives.
1:04:41 I remember when I first played this part, there is a bit of time where they just walk in silence. I was so "pissed" and thought no one was going to mention that Kris almost got killed by some rando in a robot suit, thinking that this was a missed opportunity for the story. And then Susie spoke up and and questioned what had happened. This interacrion cemented her as one of my favorite characters (and, ironically, made me dislike Ralsei more). Just a fun anecdote that reminds me of how well-written this story and its characters are
Great video bud, it was joy to listen, i don't want to point out anything, just know that you did a great job and bring some little more happiness in my life.
just finished the video and wanted to say that i really enjoyed it! looking forward to the ralseis and noelle ones. (and yes, do the dance analysing!! analyse literally everything you can please its so fun to listen to) also, did you ever think about starting a patreon? i would love to support your videos, however small it may be
kris related, i think perhaps Kris wants to help spamton, and maybe the other secret bosses too, and its the players input that goes against this desire. As opposed to the player forcing kris to partake in the secret boss fights, we force them if we choose to not persue the dark crystals
You hated Susie at first? She has been my favourite character right away. I just adore those that are angry and or aggressive due to trauma etc as they often offer the best character developement and it's always interesting to find out what made them the way they are.
Always hungry and always sleepy makes for a sad combination. Sounds like Susy isn't being fed and may even be in a situation where she doesn't feel safe or comfortable sleeping at home
Actually I had a thought about the whole Kris peace sign thing you mentioned. I think there might be like an actual reason for it being based on Earthbound, particularly I think it’s meant to draw a parallel between Kris and Ness. They both are “silent protagonists” though in several instances they both act out of the players control and have their own distinct characters outside of the players control? I feel like perhaps using the fuzzy pickles/peace sign is meant to indicate this similarity?
It could also be she feels like a pawn when she falls asleep to Ralsei's lullaby but of course this is just speculation though it is quite interesting since Kris is being used as a vessel for us to be able to experience the game so it could be foreshadowing for when it is possibly revealed that Kris is not the one in control. This is just pushing it but it is another explanation to why she falls asleep so easily to the lullaby
Calling it right now, Susie is the Final Boss of a Full Violence Run.
I fully believe that we're gonna fight Susie at some point solely on the grounds that Toby went too hard on "Vs. Susie" to only use it the one time
I have a pet theory that Susie is so defiant of the player that you will never get to fight her because she knows it will be the best revenge she can inflict.

and that would truly prove that this is their story too, and you don't get you choose how it ends.
and that would prove both of them right.
that your choices didnt matter.
and that by going down this path you won't find the result favorable.
@@chongwillson972 that's what i think too - weird route ending will be kind of a face off of ralsei, susie, and possibly kris if they reveal somehow that they're being possessed
ah susie, the only protagonist of deltarune that does NOT have some type of "their actually evil" theory.
She's evil when kris is insecure and weak she will come and eat their face.
Nom nom nom 😋
thats becuase she was already evil lol
@@tearsofthekingdom9062
so, what you are saying is that there is more evidence of her going to become evil later?
all we need to do now is ignore any character development because of course its acting, duh.
she is hiding her past which just means she untrustworthy.
and she can resist the player which means against, and we are side of good.
all of this and other things point to susie secretly being evil.
@@chongwillson972no, what we're saying is that she is "evil" in chapter 1
Personally. I found it wholesome.
its kinda funny you point out that susie acts like lancer in chapter 2 when you take into account that people have also theorized that ralsei could be who kris desires/desired to be (given the fact that kris's family is comprised of goat monsters/kris's red horned hairband is ralsei's counterpart theory.)
kinda makes me wonder if chapter 1 is really just some weird form of collective escapism for kris and susie that ultimately drew them together.
@@trafferty And Queen is the counterpart to Berdly and Noelle, maybe? It's not as clear cut as the other two but Berdly sees Queen as an equal, she's someone he wants to be: smart, respected, powerful. And for Noelle, while she doesn't want to be Queen, the antagonist believes in her and drives her to be more confident and decisive, something Noelle desperately needs in order to act on her feelings for Susie and stand up to her mother
Idk I'm just spitballing here
Oh my god! That would so frickin genius@@trafferty
personally, i feel like her attitude in chapter 2 is a pretty big leap in character development, and i wouldve loved to see that growth drawn out over atleast another chapter?
Her brute forcing of puzzles to me was showing an underlying willingness to self-harm. When she says 'Damn, I didn't get to impale myself' you could interpret it as her making a joke, but I think she was just trying to play it off as a joke.
Yeah she also does that in chapter 2 saying she can stab herself while asleep talking about her spikey bed.
I think susie is exhausted as she’s always hungry, and that’s why she falls asleep super easily when ralsei sings
38:40 Man, can't believe you didn't mention the classic "Please keep body tackling the soda machine." Truly, one of Susie's greatest hits.
oh my god, you just made me realise something when you asked who reacted in the most realistic manner 😂 just imagining Susie yelling "the hell's going on, I need to get the f out of here", Ralsei just standing there like the most stereotypical guide NPC telling you about THE PROPHECY, all the while Kris is being controlled by the player and doing some random 360 no scope movements, teabagging, jumping up and down and running at speeds faster than intended *because* they're being controlled by the player's inputs.
Susie - the source of common sense
Ralsei - Skyrim NPC
Kris - player character

28:25
I think that Ralsei's choice of team name is better to analyze in regards to Susie. Paraphrasing but:
Lancer: "...Legendary heroes: the herald of fun and friendship?"
Ralsei: "Oh, that's mine! Because we're all friends who like to have a lot of fun"
Susie: "okay, first: jeez, that's a mouthful. Second: what kinda name is that? What are the enemies going to think, that we're gonna be BUDDIES with them? Our name has to be COOL! INTIMIDATING! BADASS!"
Ralsei: "...Like what?"
Susie (unsure): "Uhh, like
You know, how about um... JUST uh...
The Fun Gang..?
You know uh, just really focusing on the Fun part"
Lancer: "Perfect!"
Also, from Lancer's choice:
Ralsei: "Lancer, why do YOU get tonpick our name?"
Susie: "He didn't, Kris did"
Very nice coming from miss "your choices don't matter"
This is obviously just a coincidence because Chapter 1 came out years before but "Legendary Heroes: The Herald of Fun and Friendship" sounds like a name ChatGPT would come up with lol

A Hairbrush! That makes so much more sense. It seems so obvious now because the axe looks like a Hairbrush (kinda). I think you're right.
yknow what a toothbrush with toothpaste on it makes a LOT of sense
Considering you can get the "Auto-Axe" in Chapter 2, I think Susie's weapon is a toothbrush, seeing as electric toothbrushes are a thing

Susie is scared that she and Kris don’t have a *real* connection outside of the dark world adventures, and learning Kris was being controlled would only validate this fear, at least to a certain degree
Edit: 46:32 just watched this bit, basically said the same as me just different lmao
Edit 2: 1:15:10 WOW, really just takin the words outta my mouth huh lol?
It reminded me of how I acted when I was that age lol
This deeper look into the character definitely puts it into perspective for me, what a phenomenally written deuteragonist
The fact that there’s a dark world and light world lv is a lot scarier now lol
that's way too direct for toby. he'd at most very heavily imply it, or maybe use a secret boss to convey her abuse without actually depicting it.
that being said, that the light world menu still has LV is suspicious
I literally thought about it before let's gooo
NightHawk is back at Character analysis yay
I'm glad a character like susie has been written by someone like Toby. I trust him to handle a character so relatable with nuance and depth.
Not too important but i just wanna say it because i keep hearing people bring this up, I don't think Susie is only one who likes to eat chalk. Alphys says she "can't start class without some" like it's similar to a cup of coffee, not a tool. This might just be common for monsters.
You mean alphys can't start the class because she needs to eat chalk first? Is it just a crack (for fun) theory or for real?
@@QSBraWQ I genuinely think this is just a lizard monster quirk, lol. It would make sense if it was just inconvenient for her to teach without being able to use the chalkboard, but the very specific phrasing of "you know I can't start class without some" feels like a gag.
I had no fricken idea Susie was based on a real person. Your the first to point that out that i have seen.
And more specifically, *THIS* dialogue option *right here*; 1:06:51
I love, *LOVE*!! the detail of Kris taking the chance to SCREAM their true feelings the moment you let them.
And then we're like "nah little buddy, I get it, tell 'em the truth" and they're *immediately* like "I AM BEING CONTROLLED *RIGHT NOW* AND I AM *VERY* SCARED!"
And it's like, yeah! At this point, we've *seen* chapter 1's ending, we *know* that Kris is not us and we are not Kris, and we *just* saw saw Spamton "break", and WE know that THEY know that WE'RE here and we could TOTALLY try and cover it up if we wanted to-
And then we don't.
That kind of character is my favorite character archetype, a lot like Undyne and Papyrus come to think of it (guess who my favorite Undertale characters are :)

Toby Fox is really a shockingly good writer given how the most he was known for before Undertale was Homestuck music and an edgy Earthbound hack.
A few bits I want to comment on real quick:
5:09 A further wrinkle is what it means for _Kris_ to take a bite of the apple.
Susie as you describe here, but Noelle because "everyone knows how weird [Kris is]"
1:01:09 In-game it seems like Susie was in there for more than a minute.
Though the wack-ass enemy balancing doesn't help things, either.

the idea that NO dark fountains simply can exist in the end of this story implies one of two things, A. something happened that caused dark worlds to simply be WAY to dangerous thus the light and dark worlds were separated but the darkners never learned why, OR that they were always dangerous but since for most dark worlds, the only way out is sealing the fountain, the balance is usually kept, but when lightners learned of the danger, they stopped.
OR perhaps dark fountains arent dangerous at all and ralsei simply was lied to? it just doesnt make since that the light and dark worlds seem to be more connected (evidence from chaos king saying he thinks the lightners abandoned them) but no longer are, unless the danger didnt exist, wasnt as great of a threat as its made to be, or something changed to make a dark worlds uh more volatile for a lack of words

For all we know, Susie could be playing Dragon Blazers via an emulator on a cheap, old PC, or possibly on the library's computers.
woo video analysis on my favorite purple girl!
I love how the title is “the VIOLET tormenter”, not violent. Susie isn’t that violent, but she sure is purple
purple
ourple
@@Lemonade-Treewait thats in the game in the room with seam's seap, the save point actually says the violet tormentor which is pretty cool
Neat analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
this tophat bird guy has some really good and compelling theories and analysis.
An hour long Susie analysis, thank God. Work is gonna go just a little bit quicker
This videos make me care even more about the characters, good job man!
Ayo susie is my big favorite im excited to watch
Not So Fun Fact: If you interact with Alphys in the start of the game once then do it again, it gives secret dialogue
as much as I like Kris, I have to say Susie is my favorite character in Deltarune (so far because it might change when future chapters are released), I just love her character, the way she acts in the game etc.
Conclusion: Kris might be sleepwalking and subconsciously creating Dark Fountains to help others untangle the troubles in their lives.
i love susie so much
the lore summons me
1:04:41 I remember when I first played this part, there is a bit of time where they just walk in silence. Just a fun anecdote that reminds me of how well-written this story and its characters are
YES. I LOVE THESE KIND OF VIDEOSSS
Thanks for giving me something entertaining to listen to at work.
great video! i cant wait for the noelle analysis
Theory. She's a run away. Just get this feeling. Maybe her parents didn't except her or made her feel like a "monster" so she acts like one
Great video bud, it was joy to listen, i don't want to point out anything, just know that you did a great job and bring some little more happiness in my life.
yay new video :D i really like these character analysis's
just finished the video and wanted to say that i really enjoyed it! looking forward to the ralseis and noelle ones. (and yes, do the dance analysing!! analyse literally everything you can please its so fun to listen to)
also, did you ever think about starting a patreon? i would love to support your videos, however small it may be
you really do deserve more views, haha. im just commenting to boost this
kris related, i think perhaps Kris wants to help spamton, and maybe the other secret bosses too, and its the players input that goes against this desire. As opposed to the player forcing kris to partake in the secret boss fights, we force them if we choose to not persue the dark crystals
Just realized why Gaster vanishes when you approach them in Undertale lmao.
He has 0 hp or negative hp lmao.
You hated Susie at first? She has been my favourite character right away. I just adore those that are angry and or aggressive due to trauma etc as they often offer the best character developement and it's always interesting to find out what made them the way they are.
Hate as in hate what they do, probably instead of hating the purpose of the character.
1:14:44 may i suggest that kris does have 2 souls but they also just has split personality disorder
51:30 Thats not a peace sign, the thumb is being held out too?
pinkie is
It could also be she feels like a pawn when she falls asleep to Ralsei's lullaby but of course this is just speculation though it is quite interesting since Kris is being used as a vessel for us to be able to experience the game so it could be foreshadowing for when it is possibly revealed that Kris is not the one in control. This is just pushing it but it is another explanation to why she falls asleep so easily to the lullaby
