this is where they screwed up in the show. They had a perfect opportunity for a valid reason for those two to be married and they didn't do it. it would of added a whole interesting story line instead of the stupid non-believable storyline they came up with. for me, that was the start of the downfall of the show.
I don't think they should be married. Maybe it would have created a great storyline, but there are plenty of exciting opportunities for the writers to explore.
I don't think they should have gotten married, either. Katsumoto warned Juliet that constantly pretending to be Magnum's loving wife (everywhere outside of Robin's Nest) would very likely destroy their friendship. Juliet realized he was right, heeded the warning, and called off the "fake" marriage. She had no romantic feelings for Magnum yet, but she did care for him and didn't want them to end up hating each other.
Personally, I think things went off script in season 3. From the very beginning of that season, it's quite obvious the writers were planning to move Magnum and Higgins in a romantic direction. Dr. Ethan Shah was probably meant to be part of a love triangle. But something changed, and I wonder if COVID forced the team to postpone that storyline. Suddenly, Ethan became a heavy side character, and the rest of the season was basically about his and Juliet's relationship. (I mean, Magnum risks his life to save Higgins in 3x09, which clearly moves her, and yet in the very next episode, she's enjoying a sexy holiday with Ethan and still belittling Magnum.)
The only way Magnum and Higgins could have a romantic relationship was if she changed her attitude and behavior towards him (and her feelings, of course). And thankfully, she did. She apologized to Magnum in the season 3 finale for being so harsh on him. She told him he was her best friend. She missed him while in Kenya and was glad to be back in Hawaii partnering with him again. And then in season 4, she painlessly breaks up with Ethan over the phone and has romantic dreams about Magnum only a few episodes later. Now we've reached the point where they can have a believable romantic relationship, born genuinely from their deep friendship and care for one another.
So far, I'm very much enjoying their relationship in season 5, and I'm excited to see where it will go from here. There are so many new facets of their dynamic the writers can introduce. :)
