    The NBA has a soft salary cap unlike the NHL and NFL. This means you can go above the cap but you need to qualify for an exception. This is not hard to do. There are a long list of exceptions including Bird Rights, Minimum Salary, and Mid-level exceptions. However, using the exceptions has a drawback. If teams spend too much over the cap, they run the risk passing the luxury tax threshold. An extra $5 million in contracts will cost teams a minimum of $7.5 million in penalties. Nobody ignored this penalty quite like the Brooklyn Nets in 2013-14. Watch the video to learn more. #NBASalaryCap #NBA #NBAExplained

      Secret Stuff We are hoping to do a more in depth video for the exceptions! There is A LOT of them so we wanted to make a general overview and then go into some more details later on, a video fully on contracts might be good too we thought?

    The NBA would become 10x+ more entertaining if they went hard cap. Some of their "exceptions" make sense, but the majority of them are absolutely absurd.

    • @numbersbehind
      @numbersbehind  2 роки тому +8

      Hard cap means under no circumstance can you exceed the salary cap. The NBA has exceptions which let you go over the cap.

      Why? With a hard cap nobody's coming to the nba. In the end, the player's salaries go down.

    The two sides seemed to drop the ball in ‘96. I wonder why there’s no information on tearing up that CBA when the cap went into the stratosphere. That was justifiable grounds to overrule any violation of contract and it did more bad than good in my honest opinion. What happened was a free for all Wild West all over and these silly $40 M contracts to 12th men got out of hand. In the end, the game lost a lot of its purity and the beginning of the spectacle being more important.

    What about the apron/hard cap

    • @numbersbehind
      @numbersbehind  4 роки тому

      Yeah, we tried to keep it simple and group the apron with the luxury tax but there are different rules associated with the apron. Basically, if you exceed a certain amount over the luxury tax threshold (about $6 million) some of the salary exceptions (bi-annual, some sign and trades, etc.) are no longer available. If you are below the apron and use one of those exceptions you become hard-capped and cannot exceed the apron amount for the rest of the season. Looking back, we should’ve touched on the potential to be hard-capped.

      The team has to pay the difference to get to 90%. It’s paid to all of the players on the roster. How it’s divided is predetermined by the players association

    The NBA needs to do what the NHL did and just lock their players out until they get a hard cap.

    • @anubisgod23

      Soft cap is one of the main factors in the NBAs fall

    • @redman6790

      What’s the big issue with soft cap?

    • @albertwong1182
      @albertwong1182 2 роки тому

      Well, the NBA is doing far better economically than the NHL. So I don’t think the NBA should be copying the NHL. Plus, the soft cap is clearly the best way. A hard cap punishes teams who draft and develop talent well as they will have to let some of those players go when the cost gets too high. A soft cap allows these teams to keep all of those players, assuming the player wants to stay.

    I really hate salary caps. Player salaries will be reduced! The nba should get a higher salary.
