I bought my wife a brand new Maverick Lariat First Edition Hybrid with Area 51 paint and it's fantastic. The electric motor is louder than I like when it kicks in but overall we are averaging 39.4 mpg going into our 2nd rank. Acceleration was a big concern but you're right, with the new ECVT and help from the electric motor you rarely need to go over 15% power and it easily keeps up with traffic. We put it into "Eco" mode which still provides enough grunt for rush hour traffic. The B&O audio system is better than stock but they didn't put much effort into the sound profile on it, too muddy but acceptable for my wife. My concerns, the noise of the electric motor over time getting louder and the hard plastic dash developing rattles, so far it's tight, quiet and awesome! My daily is a 400hp AWD Lincoln MKZ which is a whole other kind of car, Lincoln should be ashamed for killing their cars off.
I would like to echo Estaban's comment. This has been by far the most complete video of the XL hybrid's real world experience. I'm probably going to replicate the same wheel and tire choice Considering that it really didn't impact the fuel economy much, I think it is an low risk/high reward mod. Prior to this, I've always had either a Ranger/S10 as a beater second car.
Thank you for actually knowing what the E-CVT is, some reviewers have compared it to an old combine transmission. I have an XLT with the Lux Package and I Love it. Great Review. Kuddos to Ford for putting the Maverick out there for the market. To me, this is what trucks like the Tacoma and Ranger should be, and in fact, it's what they used to be. Most people just need a small, basic, rough and ready utility vehicle that gets relatively good gas mileage. I really hope that the sucess of the Maverick pushes Toyota to move the Tacoma back to its roots. If Ford releases an AWD hybrid Maverick I'll definitely be looking at it to replace our Honda Element when it finally gives up the ghost( 240k and still going...mostly).
I think Toyota will keep the Tacoma as is but come to the table with something like the Maverick. That said it's going to be hard to match the $$ hybrid
Toyota had a concept truck called the A-Bat it was based on the RAV4 hybrid. They’ve already indicated they’re making a smaller truck to slot under the Tacoma with a release window of 2026
It is not small, it is not basic, it may be rough but it is not tough. It is nothing like the original Ranger that was body-on-frame with 14-inch wheels with a bench for three people and with a 7-foot bed. The Ranger was smaller and lower. Why does a pickup need 17-inch wheels? The Maverick is all show and little substance. At least it is not very expensive in its base trim. Low price and good mileage are its only two redeeming qualities.
The wife and I are looking at a Maverick to replace her car. 191 horsepower is plenty, I drove a truck with "only" 185 horsepower for years, and some years ago I drove a truck with 90 horsepower. We don't need to pull trailers or build houses with this thing, we will use it to occasionally haul gas cans or garden stuff. The only part my wife doesn't like about these trucks is you can't get one with a manual transmission.
FYI I don't know if this is the case, but the Bluetooth disconnect could be due to your phone. I had issues with an old phone and sync until one day I got an update on my android phone and never had a problem again.
Outstanding wheel choice. Tires, too. I noticed that the inserts and armrests in your Maverick are gray, rather than the standard orange. Has Ford made a change, or did you change the color of yours?
im hoping to be able to order one in august when orders open up again. i want a base model hybrid just like yours unless they make awd hybrid available i might go for that

@@nathanbrantley6949 mainly I want to see the inclusion of ford SYNC in the higher trim levels. Other companies make AWD hybrid vehicles and I think that would be a very appealing option. I understand this is a budget friendly vehicle but that's why trim levels are there. It's the first version of the truck though so now that ford can clearly see a desire for these trucks I hope the next couple years versions have some more things that other popular ford vehicles also have.
Hey bud your in Wilmington aren’t you, that’s gotcha be Carolina Beach Road. I’m in town and have been looking at these mavericks for a minute. I’ve got two kids around the same age so it’s nice to see that they fit well great video man!
Ditto on the comments. Question, I have the hybrid Lariat with the stock tires, and was seriously considering those Nitto Tires you put on...Do they greatly help from slippage/spinning on trail roads, or service roads where it may be sandy or gravely, compared to Ford's stock tires they sell with the vehicle? Thanks ahead of time for thoughts on this!
My question is how is it going to do with cargo weight of about 1,200 lbs going up and over Donner Hwy 80 in California? If the battery is depleted while going up how much power struggle will there be?
I would have thought that Ford had the issues figured out with their Sync. I have a 2019 Ranger and I admit that Sync absolutely sucks. I have the same problem. I have to constantly reconnect it. I used to have a job where I traveled all the time and so used a lot rental cars. No other manufacturer had that problem. My wife's 2015 Kia doesn't have that problem.
I did look at the Ford ones after the truck was purchased. However, both of the Ford options (two when I checked last) were considerably more expensive than the Rough Country one. For my needs, this cover works great.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing. It really doesn't sound that bad. Of course, audiophiles may notice issues but for the average guy, it works just fine.
This is the model we are waiting on. Thank you for the review. Which state are you in? We are looking for a cover for the bed, but are concerned about the heat in TX. Wondering if hard top would hold up better?
I have a similar bed cover on my Frontier, except, instead of being 3 panels, it rolls up, which means you don't have to take it off like that. That's a better option IMHO.
I have a Bestop rollup cover on my Gladiator and it works great. This one was just a great deal and I was worried that a roll up cover with rob bulkhead space which would interfere with my dirtbike front tire.
Hi Ali, could you do a video about your wife's outback. I have one in addition to the Gladiator and I love the looks of yours and wonder if you added a lift in addition to the wheel swap.
Hers is stock, but with a slightly larger tire. I’ll try to convince her to drive one of my vehicles for a couple days and see if I can do a little video update on her car. She won’t let me modify it anymore. 😂
@@DrivingLine What are the wheel and tire sizes on it? I was considering the Terra Grappler as a winter tire for ours in Vermont and a nicer wheel would help get rid of the boring look of our Limited.
It’s not bad. A little louder than my wife’s 2020 Subaru Outback for sure. I had a 2008 Toyota Tacoma and it reminds me a lot of that in terms of cabin noise.
I've had a Ford Cmax Hybrid for 6 years and I love it, but it seems like Ford hasn't figured out the brakes still. It takes some getting used to, but it's very easy to push a little too hard at slow speeds and the transition from the regenerative brakes to the traditional brakes is hard. Other than that Ford has always made some pretty peppy hybrids compared to other manufacturers, sacrificing a little efficiency for making it more fun to drive.
I used my GPS speedometer before I swapped the tires and after to figure out how much the speedometer would be off. The tire is only slightly taller than stock. My speedometer according to my GPS is only 1 mph off. So, pretty easy to hand calculate the mileage from that.
@@DrivingLine the boat has about 150 lb tongue weight. I currently have a ram with hemi and its my primary tow vehicle, but it'd be nice to have another vehicle that could get 20 mpg towing and 40 empty. Debating on the hybrid or the ecoboost currently
@@DrivingLine yea depending on braking input and speed the car will only do regenerative braking and not actually engage the brakes until your at a certain input. Which there is still a direct connection for brakes but when your barely pressing it will charge the battery more. So the system rewards long braking distances and coasting to a stop more than racing to the next stop light which in general will get you better range even on just a gas only car.
In general, moving up tire sizes will definitely make an impact. However, this is just under a half inch taller and I went with a lighter aluminum will over the steel wheel. I put 800 miles on the truck with it completely stock. I did not notice a change in economy moving to this new wheel and tire combo.
Nice review. Thanks for the the work and information. Also, those wheels look great! One thought... be aware that not every sentence needs to start with "now"...
Comment about the loss of connection to phone - depends on phone and latest updates - I have 0 issues in my Maverick. I agree the stereo is lacking but I find the audio just acceptable. I'd say it matches the 20K price point of the vehicle
I absolutely love those wheels. Nice! Also, I've found with Ford's crummy stock stereo's; if you're streaming music, check to see if your phone has a built in equalizer. My Samsung S22 does, and I've tweaked it, and the car sound settings, to really liven up the audio. I've got it sounding better than music played from a USB flash drive in my 2020 Fusion (which doesn't have the high-trim Sony branded radio).
Hey, nice vid. I'm 6'1" and my son 5'11" so far. Can't tell how tall you are. My son rides in the backseat a bunch, Mama rules. How is the leg room for that height? Thanks I can't find any mavericks to look at and sit in.
The back seats do have vents. They are basic, small vents under each of the front seats to get airflow to the back. I don't think it helps much since it is literally sitting on the floor.

Why does a pickup need 17-inch wheels? The Maverick is all show and little substance. At least it is not very expensive in its base trim. Low price and good mileage are its only two redeeming qualities.
Thanks for video very interested with someone would make video about how do you get one
I actually upgraded my phone since I got the truck. It still does it with the new one unfortunately. Thanks for the note.
@@DrivingLine thanks for the reply, I wasn't sure on that one
Outstanding wheel choice. Tires, too.
I noticed that the inserts and armrests in your Maverick are gray, rather than the standard orange. Has Ford made a change, or did you change the color of yours?
Mine is an XL. I think only the XLT get the orange. I’m not positive of that.
Thank you for a very down to earth assessment of this vehicle that I am looking to purchase I really appreciate you sharing it
Those wheels look very good with the truck's white body. Good combo
Great review, ordering mine in September
im hoping to be able to order one in august when orders open up again. i want a base model hybrid just like yours unless they make awd hybrid available i might go for that
I hope they figure out a way to make the hybrid AWD. That would really be awesome.
I called a few dealerships a couple months ago. Couldn’t get one here in Southern California.
Now I hear big recall on this hybrid model.
Recall is a a one day fix, I was in and out in a couple hours
@@Rew123 C'mon man, even top of the line vehicles have recalls.
Could you please send me the link or let me know where did you got those rims I'd like
I got mine through a local shop. Here’s the link to the wheels : www.gearoffroad.com/wheels/767-pangea/
If you click the where to buy tab, you can see who has them in stock and the best price.
Great review! Details and obsevations that others missed. Keep up the awesome work.
Thank you.
i think im still planning on waiting until the next couple of model years to see if they fix some of the common issues people have. but im really excited for the day i can order one
What "common issues"? Have you ever bought a vehicle before? Every vehicle of every brand every year has commons issues so it helps to be specific.
Yep! Great eye. The truck is great for kids. My smallest can even climb in and out on his own, which is helpful.
Great review, the wheel tire setup is perfect.
Thank you!
Well done. I intend to get one as soon as the fervor dies down. I suspect I won't get the same mpg as I do a lot of highway driving.
At my dealer it was a $100 deposit and msrp. I just got in line
My question is how is it going to do with cargo weight of about 1,200 lbs going up and over Donner Hwy 80 in California? If the battery is depleted while going up how much power struggle will there be?
Just get the 2.5 EcoBoost lmao. The base model is for light work that’s it.
Will be ordering it on August 2nd. Toyota is bringing back the scout name to compete in with this in 2025
VW is bringing back the scout name, not Toyota
Excellent review. Mine coming Oct 2. Will definitely get the cover.
I've never wanted another car payment but for this I would. The price is appealing and just the all around what I would want in a truck.
That was genuinely so helpful thank you !
Thank you!
any winter road experience? How does it do in snow, ice?
I am in a small coastal town in the south. We don’t really get a lot of snow and ice here. So, I can’t really comment on that unfortunately.
cant wait go get mine
love the steel wheels and acualy want to go to 215 70
got the hitch, co pilot360 and trar sliding window
Thanks for sharing. Thank you for the heads up on the stereo system! I thought Ford offered a cover for this, did you consider that?
I did look at the Ford ones after the truck was purchased. However, both of the Ford options (two when I checked last) were considerably more expensive than the Rough Country one. For my needs, this cover works great.
The stereo is actually *pretty good* when you use CarPlay or Android Auto. Sounds nearly as good as my old Focus ST’s premium system.
I’m in North Carolina.
Plz make a vid on the rims and tires
Finally getting mine tomorrow pre-ordered mine on Aug 2 2021 and just now getting it lol
Great review.....good job.
Thank you.
Increadible price, I want one
Love the wheel set up man!
Thank you!
Which wheels are those? They look great
These are them www.gearoffroad.com/wheels/767-pangea/
It’s a 235/65R17 on a 17x8 wheel. Works well and doesn’t rub. We probably lost 1mpg moving up tire sizes.
Nice review! Interesting vehicle…
Truck has good features... and saves on fuel. GM needs to make a truck to directly compete in this bracket. Gives consumers more options
How's the road noise on this model? I'm worried about the cabin noise.
It’s not bad. A little louder than my wife’s 2020 Subaru Outback for sure. I had a 2008 Toyota Tacoma and it reminds me a lot of that in terms of cabin noise.
The problem is, you can’t actually buy it for MSRP. Around here there is usually a 10k markup, so the base Maverick is actually 32k.
Hate to hear that. This one was sold at MSRP. Took five months to come in, but there was no dealer mark up.
Call ford online site. not dealer tho . Report dealer. They can lose their license selling over mrsp
@@davidlarson1369 That cannot possibly be true. I haven’t seen a vehicle for sale anywhere near MSRP for at least a year… maybe 2
Wheels are very complimentary.
How can you calculate MPG if the tire diameter has been changed?
I used my GPS speedometer before I swapped the tires and after to figure out how much the speedometer would be off. The tire is only slightly taller than stock. My speedometer according to my GPS is only 1 mph off. So, pretty easy to hand calculate the mileage from that.
How would you feel towing a 1200 lbs jon boat occasionally with the hybrid?
I think short distance trips would be fine. If you are going to haul it longer, I would recommend air bags for the back.
@@DrivingLine the boat has about 150 lb tongue weight. I currently have a ram with hemi and its my primary tow vehicle, but it'd be nice to have another vehicle that could get 20 mpg towing and 40 empty. Debating on the hybrid or the ecoboost currently
Your thoughts on the brakes is similar to a Toyota Prius.
My dad had a Prius and said the same thing.
Looked at my first one up close, no way, way smaller than I was thinking.
I’ve got the hybrid escape awd. Too bad they can’t put the awd in the truck
Doesn't changing the tire size alter the electric side of the engine's MPG efficiency?
In general, moving up tire sizes will definitely make an impact. However, this is just under a half inch taller and I went with a lighter aluminum will over the steel wheel. I put 800 miles on the truck with it completely stock. I did not notice a change in economy moving to this new wheel and tire combo.
I would have liked to see them bring the cost down even further by getting rid of a few of the unnecessary electronics.
Nice review. Thanks for the the work and information. Also, those wheels look great!
One thought... be aware that not every sentence needs to start with "now"...
And not every adjective needs a qualifier like "really" or "pretty" or "a little bit".
Comment about the loss of connection to phone - depends on phone and latest updates - I have 0 issues in my Maverick. I agree the stereo is lacking but I find the audio just acceptable. I'd say it matches the 20K price point of the vehicle
Makes me want one
My channel has over 100 Mav only videos that can help you learn more. Ask any questions Shawn.
Fantastic review. Earned another subscriber. You make me want one of these even though I need a 3/4 ton for the work I do lol
Thank you!
Ford nailed it
Nice job bud thx for the info.
Great review, very informative with practical info. Thank you!
Thank you for the note! Glad you enjoyed it.
Cheers from NC! Nice review.
Stereo is fine considering who the buyer is you can always upgrade anyway
Hey, nice vid. I'm 6'1" and my son 5'11" so far. Can't tell how tall you are. My son rides in the backseat a bunch, Mama rules. How is the leg room for that height? Thanks
I can't find any mavericks to look at and sit in.
Thank you. I’m only 5’6 . It’s definitely going to be a little tight if your son is sitting behind you.
@@DrivingLine thank you!
The back seats do have vents. They are basic, small vents under each of the front seats to get airflow to the back. I don't think it helps much since it is literally sitting on the floor.
12v double fan may help with air flow for the kids
How did you get gold rims?
These are aftermarket wheels from Gear Off-road.
