FAntastic review. Found a used 1520 and cannot wait for it to arrive. Of the three versions I managed to find the 1520.3 which has 32Gb, works on all GSM carriers and may have Qi charging although I am uncertain about the latter feature. Thanks again for the review!
Got mine today. I dropped my HTC one for it and so far it's fantastic. It goes good with my windows 8.1 PC and soon to be X-Box one. Finally home and work fully integrated!
John V, This is your best and most thorough review of a Windows Phone device. Thumbs up to you. I even learned how to use some new features on my Lumia 920, with the new updates it received recentlyl. Thanks.
Close up of phones should always be done when you first pull the out and remove all plastic covering when the phone is still clean. I hate seeing close ups of phones with hair and crumbs on it. Watch MKBHD for examples of good camera panning and close ups. I do like you explanations of the features though. Very detailed review overall all. I'm excited about how far Windows Phone has come along, and look forward to seeing future improvements. The Lumia line is definitely screaming premium quality.
I really want to get this phone and I just wanted to get clarity on a few points if you'll indulge me 1) When you say low light video recording is underwhelming this is in comparison to what exactly? The 1020? Samsung and Apple smartphones? A DSLR camera? It looked really great in the sample that's why I'm a little confused. Also, how are the lowlight stills? 2) Does the phone ever overheat. I know phones with large screens sometimes get hot after extended use and it drives me mad. 3) I personally think 16GB is a pittance. Does the Micro SD storage accommodate apps and HD games or is it just music, photos and videos? It would also be really great if you guys could actually review HERE maps. It's better than anything else available and I think people should know this Otherwise, excellent review! Thanks
Very good review. Lumia 1520 is a well balanced device, not only in the WP8 lineup but in the whole mobile market. It has a very good Operating System, very powerful Processor, Best Camera after Lumia 1020, good FHD display and latest update from Windows Phone 8.
7:22. When you say the home screen is disorganized. You'll have that experience regardless of platform (iOS, Android and Windows). Difference is you have multiple pages you have to swipe left and right on Android and iOS, compared to windows which is just one page with a vertical scroll. As for the organized view, when you swipe to the app list screen, they give you three different options to get you to the app you want. This interface I have to say gets you from point A to point B faster than Android, while giving you better customization that iOS.
I had an iPhone for 2 years n the last 2 months had an HTC one. I I've always wanted a windows phone since the lumias have been out. Today I went to the Microsoft store to check out the 1520 and 1020. I'm gonna go with the 1520. Screen is awesome lol Its big no question bright and easy to see. Camera rocks and windows run amazing on it. Facebook is great on it too. I'm not taking much video at night but like someone said: mess with the settings and ill get better video. This camera is way better then anything on the market maybe with the exception of the 1020 I would say the second best camera out there or third best rather is the iPhone 5s my HTC One camera is horrible maybe the worst camera I have ever experienced using my iphone 4 which I still have as a spare takes way better pictures on my HTC One but the Nokia 15-20 is just an amazing camera phone. I seriously can't say enough good things about this phone but maybe it should be 5.5 inches and not 6 the size is holding me back just a little bit from making the purchase
Wow, really detailed review. Helped me eliminate the option of choosing red since it's glossy. The codec question crossed my mind as well, which was answered in the video.
I would like to correct the reviewer, the internal memory of the phone is 32GB which can be expanded up to 64GB and it also has a free 7GB of Skydrive storage. Please be mindful of all the specs coz it is the viewing public that will make the decision whether to buy a product or not. Thanks!
i'm using a lumia 720, and eventhough i'm opening almost 15 apps like microsoft word, camera, xboxlive, etc.., its performance is still fluid, and it only has 512MB ram capacity, but still does the job... of course with that monster 2GB RAM and 2.2 GHz processor.. it will blow your mobile experience off the chart.. lol, not to mention that epic ziess lens! oh yeah!
i had this phone for 2 days and returned it, i hated carrying it around but loved using it for internet surfing and vids...excellent display and phone worked well overall but would only fit in my back pocket. I exchanged it for the 1020, I think 5" screens are about the perfect size so hopefully nokia produces one soon
Actually, regarding the peek mode for the clock, it doesn't actually save battery because the 1520 has an LCD panel, as you stated in the video. If it was AMOLED, like the 1020, it would save battery.
Decent review but you guys are crazy saying the low light performance isn't up to par. Nokia makes the best smartphone cameras. Samsung, Apple and HTC can't even come close.
i think hes right i don't like video performance because it look shit in low light... the camera is pretty good but i don't like video performance. better im buying lumia 1020 sorry bad english
I always want to try a windows phone and I bought a 1520 off ebay for $40 and it was in almost new shape, updated it to WP10 and now its replaced my S8 as my daily phone. Win 10 makes this a really awesome phone.
Also, I disagree with you on the camera, I've been a photographer for a long time and the camera to this date is great for a camera phone especially if you take advantage of the manual settings.
Looks stunning, had a go with a note 3 and wasn't impressed by audio (or pixilation). How does this sound on eternal and headsets compared to the htc one max?
I could not wait to buy this baby! I want it as a gift for myself this Christmas! This is really an awesome device to get! Worth every Cent and for sure if I will get it, I will be unique as everyone has either an iPhone or an Android or maybe a Blackberry! Only people with good tastes will either buy an Android or a Windows Phone. :)
Nice review. I really like the look of Windows Phones but I don't want a Windows Phone if that makes sense. I have a Note 3 and use Launcher 8 which is really cool. I can change it up if I get bored.
@hwangeruk. Thank you for that information it was very helpful. But sadly the Bluetooth part won't work due to me having a 1958 jaguar haha. But the speaking text would be a great plus. Does it have voice turn by turn navigation? Can it also set alarms like siri? Is it more like Siri or Ok Google Now?
Does the size of the display have anything to it being IPS LCD instead of AMOLED? The features and Specs of this phone in a L925 body would be a winner for me. Except the nanoSIM.
Nokia 1520 ROCKS. Android phones are boring, even when the app icon is staring at you, you would still be looking for it on the android phone screen. But on Nokia phones, the tiles are so visible it takes no time for you to find the app.
Smartphone jendela impian Beny yaitu Nokia Lumia 1520.Smartphone ini walaupun besar tapi tenaga prosesor nya Dahsyat dan performa nya luar biasa. Kecepatan Internet nya yaitu 4G LTE (150 Mbps DL 50 Mpbs UL) HSDPA (42.2 Mbps DL 5.76 Mbps UL). Kamera digital di perangkat itu hebat sekali yaitu 20 Mega piksel & Video digital nya HD 1080 piksel. Layar sentuh diagonal nya 6 inci & resolusi walpaper 1920 x 1080. Tapi harga perangkat Smartphone ini di Indonesia Rp.9.050.000,-
I wanna know if there is zero gap with the panel and digitizer or if it's put together like the lumia 920. I went through 4 lumia 920s before I just gave up with dust getting under the screen when it was in my pocket.
I have the Nokia Lumia 1520 and I LOVE it (had it for about 3 months now). But, No matter what the lighting, the video (shooting 1080p, 30 fps), it always looks grainy. I'm am playing around with the settings, but does anyone have a tutorial or the best settings for the clearest video (and then, I will just see if it is the lighting, because it was a bright sunny day outdoors, but still grainy). Thanks so much :)
Can this phone stream Amazon Prime? I have looked through the windows phone store and can't find an app. Will the IE browser allow to stream Amazon prime?
Got one on order but not happy with the noise in low light videos, any news on a update to help/fix this, many vids on here showing how bad the noise is in low light.
Great Fablet, but I'll wait for the updated version. Don't like the need-to-connect-Bluetooth in order to activate the automatic text feature while driving; hopefully, the tech boys'll work that out for the next version. I do love the bigness of the device, and the photo features, and capabilities. Overall, I like the current Nokia lineup and choice of devices; and for the fact that it's Window's based, Nokia's helping to satisfy my need to throw my Android phone in the garbage.
I don't understand your obsession with a notification center. The whole point of live tiles is that you put the message tiles all in one place (and not "all over the place") so you can see if there are any messages. If you want an extra swipe for a notification center, apparently it's coming, but I won't use it because I can already see everything all at once. To me, a notification center is a legacy app. By the way, nobody using WP8 is particularly concerned with comparing specs to Android. WP8 is so efficient that a massive CPU is a battery-wasting macho exercise, but not a serious issue.
WP looks great and has made some great progress over the years, however unfortunately in the App world it is still seriously behind and is one of the main reasons I still stay away. On top of that there's no indication the 930 is going to be dropped in North America anytime this year which is really disappointing.
Soooo, are notifications fixed with GDR3? I used Windows Phone for close to 2 years and switched to the iPhone because I was sick of the shoddy notifications and getting shafted with lower quality apps compared to IOS and Android.
Hmm, I would say many headline apps (and some 3rd party ones) are now higher quality than iOS. Some still require maturity, its a mixed bag. When devs get it right (and use the SDK properly, rather than HTML wrappers etc) then the apps are super slick. The tiles are fixed under GDR3, they used to annoy me too. Apps are coming now thick and fast. Sky Bet, Go to Meeting, Live Gaming, Euronews, Readit (best Redit client ever!) , Moliplayer (like VLC, although VLC will be out soon). Worth another look. It will be even more appealing for "returners" like yourself when 8.1 comes out next year.
hwangeruk I am waiting to see what 8.1 brings. MSFT hasn't been moving as fast as the industry or Nokia lately in terms of development, partially why I got frustrated with the platform and left. On the other hand the Lumia 1520 looks amazing and might be a buy provided a lot of my gripes are addressed in 8.1. WhatsApp was a prime example of my problem. For a service that primarily depends on notifications, i would not get notifications for hours after the message was sent.
Would love this phone... but I need something with HDMI or some kind of video out :/ Nokia, you've had HDMI since Symbian and that's why I can't put down my 808. Please, bring it to Lumia.
I hope this phone can hold it ground to my needs comparing old ones. I have mostly used camera (seem to be best so far), As music player (no idea, dont belive it can beat old ones), As phone (dont think it's good at it). So many useless features for my use. But when you get this kind phone for free i can't really turn it down.
Galazy mega has the same screen quality as Galaxy S4 Mini ( the phone I have ) and on a 6 inch phone it won't look good Get the 1520! Much better phone
For the sake of QUALITY of a review you should have made it clear that ONLY THE AT&T version of the L1520 DOESN'T have built-in wireless charging. The NORMAL version of the phones HAS Qi wireless charging built in.

Do an updated one now
Nokia lumia 930 vs nokia lumia 1520 vs Samsung note 3
please put them in 1st 2nd and 3rd x

Great in-depth review!
John you forgot to mention that the glace screen can show notifications and other text that is usually only available on the lock screen.
No sense hating on a particular phone, don't like it don't buy it.
This is a sophisticated phone for the sophisticated user. Love it.
Great video. Didn't realise I could shoot picture in RAW until I saw your video. WOW I am happy
Best phone ever made;) don't mind me I'm just in love with this device

Nice balanced review. Bravo. For the call volume, try pressing volume up when on a call?
I wish they kept the 920 design -- flat top and bottom, curved sides.
I would like to correct the reviewer, the internal memory of the phone is 32GB which can be expanded up to 64GB and it also has a free 7GB of Skydrive storage. Please be mindful of all the specs coz it is the viewing public that will make the decision whether to buy a product or not. Thanks!

No regrets in buying the Lumia 1520, screen is just wow and camera its well its Nokia cant wait for future updates.

@@Wsmith247 Is it really worth i 2019?I want one for daily usage
Great review.
Looks amazing on the IPS screen. I love the white background on my 920. And it doesn't drain the battery like AMOLED.
0:31 - "It's 6 inches, so it's pretty massive."
*dirty giggle*

Good review. Your voice is great.
This is a Nokia, and it's years old, yet still performs better than most phones in 2019.
Great review! Definitely a Like!
This is the best smartphone design I ever seen in mobile phone technology.
WP os is beautiful.
Android 4.4 Kit Kat is the best IMO.
only problem with it is the market.
DieselPowerFinland android has no GUI physics
The Skinery Themes app on this phone will be INSANE on the 1520 with the 6in full HD screen.
great phone, windows is getting better and better.
The video quality is great you just have to know what settings to use
It's not terrible, but I was still expecting better.
Don't like the sharp corners that dig into your hand . Thay would really annoy me. Prefer the 1020 with the camera grip or a Galaxy Round.
I'm switching to this Friday to try out Windows Phone 8. From iPhone, to Android to Windows Phone 8...wish me luck O_O
Good luck, keep an open mind and you can definitely fall in love with WP.

Could you please compare the camera performance of lumia 1020 and 1520.I'm so curious about it.
That's definetely my next phone right there
Lumia 1520 looks good. Btw, how many times did he say "actually?"
Hey John...where can I get a stand like the one you show in this video?
Did you made a mistake calling it 1020 sometimes somewhere in the middle-end?
Beautiful Phone
Love the phone! Love Nokia! Please release a fix for the WiFi problem!!!
I love this phone. It's a replacement for my note 2
Can this phone stream Amazon Prime? I have looked through the windows phone store and can't find an app. Will the IE browser allow to stream Amazon prime?
I'm pretty sure Nokia pulls numbers from a hat to name there phones

does whatsapp works good in the background ?? no delays in messages receiving ???
How much? Please tell me, I can't find the price :(
Looks great, needs more apps, or until Google improves the performance on next Android since 4.4 already introduces ART
i think The video and image quality are not as worse as this upload, as i can found on other uploads which they're more good handling with 20mp Lumia.
Does any of the lumia devices have an unlocked FM radio antenna?
how i connected OTG pendrive to 1520 . i connected so many time but not working.
What colour should I get?
HI - WHY DOES IT TAKE A LOT TIME TO OPEN THE MUSIC APPLICATION ? IS THERE IS FASTER WAY TO DO IT, LIKE THE OTHER ANDROID DEVICES?
WP looks great and has made some great progress over the years, however unfortunately in the App world it is still seriously behind and is one of the main reasons I still stay away. likeOMGitsUNLTD Many of us Android users look beyond the "fundamentals".
this guy is one of the phone reviewers ever. but wonder where is he now
Go Nokia!!!
Most of the Top-notch reviewers are saying that call quality is amazing.. including MKBHD.. so now i am confused,,

It has wireless charging but not in the USA, at least not on AT&T
Ammmm nokia lumia 1520 does have selfie camera??
how is the windows os compared to let´s say android as I´m using now ?
i like the square icons!
any news on this coming to the uk?
