- Why Himmel wanted Frieren
Frieren first met Himmel when he was a child. Himmel was lost in the woods so to comfort him, Frieren showed him a flower spell. Because of that Himmel wanted to recruit Frieren.

I never realized the significance of that line until I read your comment wow. Magic was solely a tool of war and demons.
Probably the reason why he tried to enjoy his journey as much as he could. Since he found beauty in something as violent as magic, he's sure he can find beauty and enjoyment in his dangerous travels.
@@RijaMo its not only that, its the significance of seeing a tool of war be used for peace. I'd reckon just as it was important for mages to visualize something to achieve it through magic. A Hero that cannot imagine a world of peace, cannot defeat the Demon King. Frieren showing him the possibility of peace, is likely what made his journey possible.

Even though Serie rejected Frieren for the exam, the latter still managed to teach her a lesson: Frieren doesn't care about being a 1st class mage at all, it's just a mere title, so it's neither power or recognition she seeks...she just wants to live another adventure with her new companions, reminiscing about her past ones who gave her a new purpose in life.
She's just that simple...and Serie can't really get it.
Serie understands her, but their opinions are just too different, they’ll never live the same way.
Frieren has no need the title

what Serie did merely just a jab to her. both know they no need of those title. Serie also acknowledge Frieren it just she hate her philosophy thats all.
They may be more similar than you thought 🤔 considering Serie "despises" Frieren for her attitude and opinions, but she also did many things for a human she deeply cared for: Flamme. She created the continental magic association, and is aiming towards a future where magic is part of every human's life.
Luck is a real skill Serie. So many of us wish we were lucky in life.

He had to be human so his early death could be an analogy to all the things we take for granted because most tend to cherish things the most after they're gone. We must enjoy life, ours and from others.
He wouldnt be a hero nor find frieren again if it wasnt for his human nature, he became a hero to do a big impact with his small life, and to find his first love once again, an elf would just let for later, for centuries maybe

Something that's not talked about outright, but Frieren mourned Flamme for centuries.
It wasn't until Himmel insisted Frieren join him that she finally came out of her shell.
I gotta say. A spell what brings beauty and colours into the world with flowers will never be useless. There's no changing that.
Cripes... he loved her from the very first moment and he never stopped. He was eternally devoted to her even though she couldn't reciprocate, not until it was too late and she'd already lost him, before she even realized she loved him.

in manga, last page of the chapter there is small drawing panel that show continuation of the conversation between Himmel and Frieren. she remembered the boy back then. she was like:
"ahh it was you?"
then Himmel was like :
"now you suddenly remember? 😅"
and lamented that how he is not look cool anymore since she remember him from back then.
something like that.
Maybe the real magic was the friends we made along the way. Serie must learn of the power of friendship!

wasnt htere a thing that frieren could only defeat the demon king because she could imagine a world at peace, while Serie couldnt?
And that serie couldt bring a paecefull world/end of the demons because of that?
thing is, serie definitely has the stats to beat the demon king in a 1v1, but magic is all about visualisation here. Since Serie cannot visualise herself in a world at peace, she'll most likely sub-consciously hold back in her fight against the demon king or be unwilling to finish the job if she subdues the demon king.

0:54 The piano hitting me in those feels. The song was perfectly place to hit at the right moment the nolstalgic/bittersweeet feeling and make me a fucking mess. The use of music/dialogue/visual to make me people feel a certain way about a specific moment is an art in itself. I count a few anime that does it perfectly. Frieren is one of them, Kaguya-sama is also one, Clannad, Naruto had a certain one in particular that I can't think of, there's also Heavenly Delusion for at least one specific scene, plus imo another one at the end of the same episode.
If this anime and its OST resonated with you, I implore you to give Violet Evergarden a try. Both shows feature the same composer, but in my opinion, his work on Violet Evergarden is a lot more pronounced than in Frieren, and it has (and still does) brought me to happy tears many times.
@@realMrVent I did watch Violet Evergarden, I knew Evan Call was the one composing for Frieren and Violet Evergarden, but thanks for the recommendation anyway. I think I prefer his work in Frieren, but to be fair I haven't watched Violet Evergarden in a long time. The episode with the mom and the daughter broke me.

for 1 second I thought weird that himmel knew Frieren as a kid and still somehow fell in love

This show is something special
I find it adorable how every character in this show has a sort of round face. Their cheeks look so pinchable.
Serie only sees the strength of the individual and not of the whole so she can't appreciate that humanity as a whole is now really powerful with magic.
I dunno about that.

Serie is literally the one who founded the Continental Magic Association. Don't take anything she says at face value:
- Says that she'll never teach magic to humans -> is the founder of the Magic Association and directly mentors First-Class mages
- Says that Flamme's flower spell is stupid -> holds the third exam in a garden of flowers
- Says that she'll never take on another human apprentice -> asks Fern to become her apprentice
- Says that she only took on Flamme as an apprentice on a whim, as if she didn't care about her -> takes a long walk with Frieren to reminisce about Flamme
- Says she hates Frieren -> takes the aforementioned walk with Frieren.
@@AD-nq2nz Yeah for some reason people don't seem to realize that Serie is not one to take at face value. There is a contradiction between her words and behavior for almost every single thing she says.
Personally, I don't think she's a bad person, just hyper-fixated on "potential". She doesn't know how to chill when it comes to other people. At least, that's the impression I have as a viewer.
She does know how to chill by herself though, seeing as she has apparently learned almost every "useless" spell that she complains about.
@@djx7134 If anything Serie despite being far older than Frieren, she is less emotionally aware than Frieren which is a goddamn feats in of itself. She is very attach to her students like all of them even the one that don't make any legacy on humanity's history. She said she looked down on human due to their short life span but also most if all of her students are human. She actually had more empathy than Frieren too, she actually remember all of her students traits, their favorite spells, hell if the flashback on the students was anything to go by, even their face and she lived for god know how long. She is Frieren mirrored in away, while she is less emotionally aware, she is more empathic.

She literally says they will overtake the "immortal" races, and not just because they reproduce rapidly, but because they are compelled by their short (relative to elves/demons/even dwarves) lives to act and innovate. She seems more disappointed that they can't keep progressing to the same level as individuals and have to rely on community and generational advancement instead. She is very much an individualist, I suppose.
But otherwise, she seems to be one of those characters who tends to mean what they say but also the opposite of what they say simultaneously, just in different ways (for instance, by complaining about humanity's short lives, she is not just implying that they're inferior like so many think, but that she wishes they lived longer). She's not the easiest character to understand, but it ain't rocket science either. People should pay better attention. This is why writers feel compelled to spoon-feed us exposition as though we're braindead.
As a manga reader can anyone tell me if serie was the one who tought flamme that spell its been over a year since i read it and im currently watching frieren but is it somewhere stated where flamme learned it?
Nah. Flamme learned it somewhere else, iirc. From her parents, I think. I'm pretty sure its the spell that set her on the path to becoming a mage. And was the last spell she taught Frieren as a sort of "passing the torch" moment. That magic isn't to just be something for war. Its why Frieren hoards so many weird, seemingly useless spells. She's the antithesis to the warmonger that Serie is.
But interestingly enough, Serie also knows the spell too. Probably copied it when Flamme showed her. Or just knows it cause of how old she is. And casts it as a way of mourning her old pupil. So who knows, maybe her parents learned it from Serie at some point. That would be an interesting twist. Serie also has a lot of "useless" spells in her memory bank, so I imagine her wisdom comes from loss just like Flamme and Frieren and why she's so bent on furthering combat magic as a whole. So people don't end up like her.
The anime already adapted the part where Flamme said that it was her parent that taught her about the spell.
I love that Frieren loves that spell because it brought her and her first party of heroes together! ❤
