the 120 gsm is one of my favorite notebooks. Glad to see you do a review on it. I have several of these as I enjoy using them with all my fountain pens and gel pens.
I too had issues with a standard Leuchtturm1917 notebook. Interesting that their solution to make it more fountain pen-friendly is to simply make the paper heavier. This looks like a really nice notebook with much improvement though, and I’d bet the paper feels luxurious too. But I’ve become attached to my Maruman Mnemosyne notebooks, since spiral binding is now my preferred style. Thanks for the review!
Thanks for the comment! My guess is that they got complaints about ghosting and bleeding so the easiest (and probably cheapest) way to address it would be to use a thicker version of the same paper. I love Maruman's Mnemosyne and their Smooth to Write papers.
@@BlakesBroadcastI'm surprised, I have nothing but fountain pens and the 1917 classic 80g paper never bleeds or shows through. Moleskein, on the other hand is terrible. Even my finest and driest pens show through the page.
I have been using mine as a daily art journal for the past 2 months, and it handles heavy ink and watercolour quite well. Some buckling when I do washes, but it doesn't bleed through, which I love. I don't use markers much, and the zebra markers I have tried do ghost a bit, but marker friendly paper is a world of its own. It works great with my chosen media, so I'd buy it again. I am looking forward to more colour options in the future!
Looks like a good option if you also do sketching and some light watercolour as well as writting. For writing I don't mind a bit of see-through, but hate it on my sketches/drawings.

Great review Blake !! I never had good results with the standard Leuchtturm even with fine nibs. I might try this but I do wish your notebook came in a standard A5 format.
Thanks for the comment Gino. An A5 Blocker notebook is something I am exploring but because it is a short grain paper it won't have a stitched binding.
Thanks for the thorough review! I had used a standard and filled the notebook, but oh boy the ghosting drove me bonkers. I ordered a 120g and should get it in this week. I like my journals lined, with narrower line spacing which has been difficult to find ( on top of no ghosting). Really hoping this one does the trick!
The ghosting will be much more minimal. I hope you will like it. If you want a thinner paper, check out the 80gsm Paper Mind Blocker notebook. This has roughly the same amount of ghosting as the 120g Leuchtturm.
Looks improved compared to the older one. I really liked the subtle grey dots. I saw them with a 20 percent discount at a store near by. Might pick one. Thanks for the video. 😊
@@BlakesBroadcast I don't mind thicker paper. During December close out sale, picked up a bunch of 1917. 😅 However, will get one of this. You know notebooks are never enough for people like us. 🤣🤣

I used to use the 80 gsm notebook. I was especially a big fan of the red dots edition. Rhodia started making their Goalbooks hardcover and I have switched to them. I like them better than the 1917. The Rhodia paper is really smooth and hardly bleeds like the 1917.
Thanks for the comment! If you like smooth paper it is pretty hard to beat Rhodia for the price. I haven't tried one of their Goal Books yet but the layout seems very similar too Leuttchtrum. I will have to get one for review.
@@BlakesBroadcastI buy Rhodia 90g in A4 notepads but I find the Leuchtturm 1917 80g is smoother and nicer to write on. Wish I could buy it notepads rather than as expensive bound notebooks
Howdy Blake, first time viewer here, new subscriber. I bought that exact same Leuchtturm 120g, same color directly from Leuchtturm but for the second half of this year. I appreciate your review as this will be the first full year Im bullet journaling and Im trying to soak up as much as I can about these books. July will be my full year and ive learned to modify the BJ'ing to my needs: not to minimalist but not to plain either. Thank for the review again. Greetings from Alamo Texas.
Hi David, thank you for the comment and the sub! It's a great notebook especially as a bullet journal. I've recently gotten back into bullet journaling and I love it.
That is an excellent paper. The pricing is also in a perfect place. Germany has the oldest companies producing paper for the Western World. A company called Hahnemühle has existed since 1584. We have here also another company called X47, they have worked for just a couple of years with A. Lange & Söhne/Glashütte watchmakers with a long tradition. X47 uses for their calenders a metal holder that has the same design used for the wristbands in mechanical watches. Their products are excellent and precise, but they also cost something more than what you have there. Summa summarum, this product you have here is outstanding for that price range.
I agree that this notebook is great for the price. I do not believe it is made in Germany though. I am familiar with Hahnemuhle and ALS but I have not heard for x47. I will have to check them out.
Thanks for the comment David. I don't know because I don't own any Noodler's inks anymore. I have been tempted to buy their Baystate Blue for testing purposes. If I get some I will let you know.
Hey Blake! I loved the review, but can you tell us how fast the fountain pens dry on the 120g paper? Mine took forever to dry on the paper of the Leuchtturm Bullet Journal thingy 😭
Thank you for the comment Livicent! I haven't had one of their Bullet Journal notebooks but I believe that the ink dries faster on this 120g paper than it does on the standard Leuchtturm I reviewed previously. The 120g paper is quite absorbent.
Another great review, Blake! As someone who enjoys the aesthetics of writing with fountain pens, I’m always interested in how various inks sheen and shade on different papers. Would love to see you add that in upcoming notebook reviews. Maybe you could include comparisons using chromoshaders like Sailor 123 and high sheeners like Organics Studio Nitrogen (as well as subtler shaders and sheeners).
Hi Roger, thank you for the comment and the suggestion. I have been thinking about adding some inks like these for a while. I don't personally use them but I know a lot of people do. I have a few reviews already shot but I will buy some of these inks for future notebook/paper reviews.
Late to this party, I guess, but thanks to your review I now know there's a Leuchtturm I would use...if the line spacing is 7mm or bigger. Do you know if it is? I actually like that it's extra thick. Just need line spacing deep enough for broad and double broad nibs.
Can you please recommend a good fountain pen (and nib size recommendation), and suitable ink to write articles on this leuchtturm1917 120 GSM notebook? Thanks in advance. Looking for archival quality inks and pens.
hi Blake! I've just watched this video and your review of the Colorverse Nebula Note Premium. could you tell me how they compare to one another? especially in terms of the paper feel (smooth vs toothy) and color (white, ivory, cream, etc). would love to know your thoughts!
Hi Brigid, I believe the Colorverse paper has a bit more texture and is more bright white in color. If we ignore features and just talk about the paper, I prefer the Nebula Note paper. It's thinner and is better with fountain pens.
I do get a kick out of the variety of pronunciations of "Leuchtturm" in review vids. I did find a video of a German man explaining the pronunciation and meaning (it means lighthouse) here on youtube.
Haha was I close to getting it right? I really do try to pronounce things correctly but it seems like I rarely get it right. People have told me multiple times that I say "Lamy" incorrectly. I did a summer at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg, Germany but that doesn't seem to have helped.
@@BlakesBroadcast It doesn't help that there are some bad pronunciation guides on youtube, and that it uses some sounds found in German but not English. The ch is like a cat hiss sound, for instance. These notebooks are all very nice, but I can't figure out why some people buy them when really good A4 notebooks (wiro bound Claire Fontaine), and staple bound Rhodia are a fraction of the cost. Also these notebooks offer - as far as I know - the best fountain pen friendly paper on the market.
Thanks for the comment Darryl. Clairefontaine/Rhodia makes very affordable fountain pen friendly notebooks. I've used Clairefontaine since I was a kid and used to love their French ruled notebooks. I started using other papers with more texture and found that I prefer them. I also prefer a stitched binding to a spiral binding or staple binding when the notebook has a lot of pages. We all have different preferences.
I don't like Rhodia or Clairefontaine as the paper is too slick for a lot of my pens. I find both papers extremely annoying. I don't have this issue on this paper.
You know the worst thing about feedback is that most people are overly opinionated and pretty much full of shit. I've never taken anyone's advice for notebook types and i was writing in notebooks before the internet came around. Most reviewers on here can't write properly and yet their pens are more expensive than mine. Don't quite get that one. If i had bad writing I'd certainly not want to show it to people. I trust what i buy and i take no advice from anyone else.
