I want to say thank you for all of your videos. I have learned so much, and it gave me confidence to tackle an entire drywall job for my basment. 1200 square feet and three rooms. Looks great for my first time. Skim coated and no racetracks. Thank you so much, and keep the videos coming.
I could have used your videos 40+ years ago. I have no need to tape any drywall, but enjoy your educational presentations. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Yet another wonderful drywall vid from Ben who seems to create nothing but wonderful drywall vids from many perspectives & topics. Batting 1000 on drywall vids! ALL are excellent! THANK YOU!
So you think inside the box. Great idea. 👍👍
That is super cool. I can totally see two newbs working together. One staying messy and applying the tape, the other wiping out. Good alternative to a banjo for guys that don't do this too often. 👍
This saved me a ton of time. I picked up three 2 gallon buckets at my local big box store and 30 minutes later I was up and running. Great tip, thank you!
Crazy good video Ben! I will absolutely try this. Please keep reminding us about which way the crease goes when applying the tape. It’s like your “feather the edges” ..we need to hear it over and over so it becomes engrained.
I’ve got faith in Ben and believe he is targeting me, the non pro with this kind of advice. I’m not spending money on a banjo I’ll never be competent at. The box is exactly what I need.
Worked awesome
Thanks for taking your time to put this out maybe my grown up kids will look at videos like this and call me for other than "Dad, HOW do I......."
I do repairs many different ways depending on whats laying around at the time and my attitude towards the last quote unquote tradesman and their attention to detail and standards. What ever happened to "In a craftsman manner", not many taking pride plus so many new materials in the trades, DYIers are always looking for short cuts to save $$, hell even Journeyman and Master keep looking for a better way Your doing a fine job young man don't let anyone tell you otherwise, experience is or master, others are to quick to judge on these platforms.

Ben, you are my hero. I'm about to take on a small drywall project and thought I'd do a little research before starting. I love this mud applicator. I made mine out of a 1.25-gallon plastic laundry detergent bottle. It can be cleaned and reused. The sides are relatively flat making it perfect for this application. I started out with a narrow slot and can trim it to get just the right mud thickness. Thank you for making these videos. You are very informative while not being boring. Great job!
I just realized, since the first video of yours I ever watched, that It's been about two months now. I'm hooked and learning lots.
Literally just watched the video where you said you were going to upload a video of this, and was getting ready to tape this afternoon. Perfect timing
I agree too much mud makes this a bit slower than ideal, but even with too much mud, this is much faster than the alternative.
Good thing for you ,I learn something every time I watch a video .
Absolutely brilliant! I've been doing it the hard way for thirty years, figuring it was that or a $1500 bazooka. It never occurred to me there might be a quick, easy, inexpensive method. Where would we be without UA-cam?
Where would we be without UA-cam? We'd be running through the jungles looking for commies in the trees to fight just like previous generations. Nowadays, those commies have evolved and are running the social media platforms. Information warfare instead of kinetic warfare.
Your videos are really great. You have a gift and skill/talent. I’ve watched a number of your videos and find myself now looking forward to my next project so I can put all your tips and tricks and amazing skill sharing to use!! First on my list is getting a Hawk and Trowel.
I remember our carpentry teacher showing us this trick using an icecream bucket, worked well for small batches, thanks for filming this!
Awesome! I hate drywall, but you make it look so easy I'm actually looking forward to my next job to test out some of your tricks
Ben inventor ! Man! You have so many useful ideas on your videos!!! Kudos to you my friend 👏👏👏👏🤝🤝🤝🙌🙌🙌🤓
Snip an old pan in half and put it in a new one. Fill the whole show with mud and let er rip. Can use 1/8tile spacers if you gotta get real fancy. But you don’t. Makes two.
Nice to have a friend when you’re doing this at first. Take someone off their work for 2 minutes and make 200m of tape for the day.
Plastic the bucket if you’re going to leave it for a bit, so much surface area can be a nibbles factory
1) great idea 2) great talent 3) thank you for the technique! Your style encourages me to be less intimidated. 👍
Dude!!! I needed this 15 years ago. This is great, gonna be taping a job soon. Thanks!
And yeah, I've defaulted to ram board tape as my general go to now.
I've got a whole house to start tomorrow. I think I'll make a bucket today and give it a try in the morning. Thanks bud!
swilky hammer did you give it a try? Curious how it worked out for a first timer.
Made one out of a plastic bucket and it saved a bunch of time. I would say prefill is even more important using this method being that you aren't working mud into everything the way you would preloading and taping. Good luck
Great idea. I enjoy all of your videos. They have helped me out many times.
Great videos! I used your videos to help me tackle my first patch job and your very informative videos definitely made things go pretty well. I have some cracked/slightly separated wall to ceiling corners that I'm gonna be working on retaping (not even actually sure if they had tape in them to begin with) but my ceilings have a slight bit of texture to them so if you get an opportunity to do any texture work definitely make sure you make a video on it!
Nice job Ben . You always have something to offer for the beginners! Greetings !
Zen and the art of taping drywall
Yes! thank you for posting this. Now I don't need to wait for my husband to cut through a plastic tub for me. I can handle a cardboard box though, haha. Your videos have helped me so much.
I love your videos... I've learned so much... thanks for taking the time to make them!
I’ve seen this used on the jobsite a few times. I was so fascinated at first lol.
Absolutely awesome, very much appreciated. I will be making one this week. Thank you for sharing you ideas!
Thanks for Your Time Sir !! Well done 👍 Nice 👍!!
You said cutting the slots in a bucket might be difficult. Plastic cuts easily with a roto-zip. Drill a pilot hole to start it. The kerf of the cut should be about right. A circular saw should work, too.
What a creative and awesome idea! I can't wait to try it!
i now need a project to use all these tips!
sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. i remember when i first started and didnt have extra money, my first stilts were 2 buckets with some 12-2 wire strapping them to my feet. it worked long enough to make the money for real stilts
If you set the bucket 2ft (or 1ft) away from the box you can measure as you pull.
Tried this today. Worked as advertised. Thanks man
I love the way you talk in Canadia❣️
Please adopt me ¡!¡
Excellent videos; great audio (voice), great content, thanks from a Do-It-To- Yourselfer, lol
I made mine out of a plastic drywall pan the red ones from home Depot cut a hole in the bottom of it doesn't matter which side it just can't be the front it makes your mud slightly thicker go to the bathroom section and get you a toilet paper roll holder the ones with the springs inside
So last week, i replaced a hole sectuin of drywall due to a leaking window. I used westpac 40 min set taped corner beads and some tape. Came out better then the original warped wall. Problem: drill mixer chewed up the bucket and left strings of plastic in my mud. Make sure the mixer does not have a forge mold offset like mine did from homedump.
You always have the best hacks & tricks - - great channel, eh
wish i seen this a week ago looks real good thank you for all your tips
Great idea Ben. Enjoyed the video.
I seen some guys down south do the same thing, they made a slop box out of an empty bucket by using a saw on both sides of the bottom
I didn’t notice if you pre fill your joints or not, Thanks for the Awesome vids I have learned a lot watching them,
I do pre fill.
Awesome video. Subbed and watch you damn near daily.
Me Too!
me three
Damn your good. Have you done any videos on boarding and the preferred technique??
Great idea and thanks for the video! I appreciate you sharing your experienced skills with us.
Just for a fun drinking game: Take a drink for every "so" you hear. :) Just a little fun. We all have our word whiskers! Actually I'm glad you're so clear and articulate in your explanations. Keep up the great videos!
Congratulations and thanks for the advice. I would like to know if the blade you use to put the paper ribbon is flexible or rigid. Thank you.
Hi. It’s flexible
Try sending this idea to a mid manufacturer that can premake the slits in their boxes. Maybe they’ll sponsor you with free mud going forward.
Ramboard tape is the new duct-tape!!
The first drywall repair job I did looks so good that pros who have been in my house ask who did it, cuz they want to hire the person. I tell them it’s me and they are like 😮
Thanks to your tips, my house looks great, but I got entirely covered in mud
As a side note - the repair job was 8 large patches from removing walls and moving electrical
As always... great video! You are VERY good at this!!!
I have a bit of an off topic question...
Do I need to remove drywall dust before I prime?
It’s something I’ve always done, but I recently was told that I didn’t have to, and that the dust “melts” into the primer. Then sand lightly after the first coat of primer, then paint.
Doesn’t this seem odd to you?
Nope. I do the same. No dusting off. I do quickly dust off the clumps of dust in the corners with a dry brush. Too much dust will just turn to schmegg in the corners when cutting in. As for the broad surface of the wall the dust will just work into the primer and not cause any issues with adhesion.
Also, I always lightly pole sand between coats of paint. Makes for a waaaayyyyyy nicer job.
Thanks Ben! I trust your knowledge and feedback!
Love the channel so far. I enjoy the little comedic breaks you add too.
Thanks again, for the advice. I had always been told that I had to wipe the surface before priming.
Going to do it your way. I’m in the midst of taping my basement now!
Keep up the great work, bud!
A square kitty liter bucket works good
Tried this today and it worked awesome. Thanks
Genial buen vídeo gracias

Ya me suscribi👍👍👍
good job with you were in pennsylvania id have a few beers after work with you ,stay warm and labatts rocks
I just made a dozen of those mud boxes. I have them on Ebay for $29.95 plus shipping. Hurry up and get yours before they are gone
Smart.will do this on my next job thanks very much
How about vice grips next to your tape roll on the sanding pole, to keep it from getting wonky?
Good idea.
Hello Ben truly enjoy your videos. I want to ask you if you can do some others videos on inside corners from beginning to sanding? Thank you again.
Nicely done!
New Subscriber here, Binged watch a bunch of your videos. really enjoyed them. I do have a few questions. DId you hang the drywall in this project? When will you shoot some carpentry videos? Can you do some videos about the business side? I am always curious about the differences between American carpenters and Canadian ones.
I hung the drywall. Carpentry videos hopefully within a month or so. Business side videos is a maybe , possibly when the channel is bigger.
Put a band of tape (loosely) on one or both sides of the roll of paper to keep from uncoiling?
I'm a cabinet guy/carpenter. But now I want to start mudding basements. This could be a big mistake haha.
Cool, why not make a prototype of this unique concept/idea. It definitely shows you have a passion for what you do! I am the co: inventor of the Richard 2 1/2 Richard gooseneck flexible paint brush extension! I had an idea just like you! I’m sure you will come up with an new innovative drywall tool in the future! Best of luck! Cheers!
U can buy boxes like this already, this is just cheaper and can make on the fly. Very helpful
The Painting Expert A plastic tab with the slot cut in it and made right into the box at the factory
The Painting Expert we use your paint brush as our standard brush, it bends and forms to your hand and cuts better than anything other brush! If you have a high stairwell no need to change brush just attach to pole and keep going. Thanks for inventing this!
With a little glue, can you use topping mud, for taping?
When you said slip box it reminds me of a girl I used to know 😂
Good, no waste of time.
I made this out of a 5 gallon bucket same concept great if your firetapin !
I enjoy you videos Thank you for the tip
Do you not use a corner tool? Still figuring out the ins and outs and curious what works best
So if ya don’t have a banjo just make one of these. Nice.
Attach a wrap cutter knife to the exit outlet
Additionally, work by wrapping the putty-covered tape into a roll and unwinding it.
Genius!!! Thank you.
Great tip thank you
cool trick - Thanks.
Brilliant, thank you !
Awesome resourcefulness 😆i could 3D print something that would do this that would cost like 3-5 bucks and sit on a bucket hmmmmmm I know they make tools too that are like 30 bucks that kinda do this
This is awesome . i done the same thing with my banjo . turned it upside down and pulled the tape out . works great
Thank you for your knowledge 🌟🌟🌟
Good idea
Awesome stuff Mr. Vancouver Carpenter. Is this your own house that you're renovating?
Friends
Great idea and sure is economic but you might try a TapeBuddy tool. It has some really good advantages and is easier to set up and use. Not near as messy. Check it out.
good tip thank you
Nice Man. Good job. I do it
Brilliant🍻
Awesome dude thanks
Do you still mud the wall before putting the wet tape on ?
How to make a 'Tape Machine' still usefull in 2019
Beautiful.
5gallon bucket and a stiff piece of wire works for me but Nice simple system.
Thanks!
You the man.
Is Titebond II premium wood glue okay??? I can’t get Weldbond except by special order and it’s $$$ here.
Ben, would this work for corner bead as well? How about rounded corner bead? So wanna try..
You could make this work for bead. Definitely trickier though. Not sure exactly how to cut the slots. Also, you would need to have a short piece of bead sticking through it as a guide or it would never go through the other end.
Thanks for the reply. I was thinking of cutting the slots in a V pattern and pushing down slightly so the outer edge remains as clean as possible....all I’ve really got to lose is a box.....such a great idea...thanks for the inspiration Ben!
Amazing
is that a cdntire ladder?
Clever.
This is getto but i should have built it, took me 3 days to tape 2.5 rooms
I've been called a drywall taping tool.
