This delivery should NEVER be forgotten. I was not a labour supporter at the time, ut I was proud to be a New Zealander led by this man at this moment.
So you are not in favor of courageous outstanding individuals running our nation? So what do we stand for? We have these people among us and we need to encourage them to run as independent candidates who run the show not a bunch of sycophantic party politicians. Do you not agree that the party system is where all the things we all hate about politics is spawned? It is time this country came of age and formed a republic with a great constitution to give every citizen their rights. We are heading, along with the smiling assassins promotion of same to a fascist apartheid state. I have lived overseas for many years and I come back to my land and see a population of adults putting up with being treated like children. The ANZACS would be disgusted at our cowardice.
Good god. That fat piece of shit sold a nation. I hope him and roger Douglas burn in hell for eternity. I was having a beer with the. Creature when he was informed a boat was ready to take him ashore. “Don’t bother, I’ll walk ashore “ was the reply. The slug couldn’t walk across a car park, let alone the sea.
When I was a kid I had a paper run and every morning before school I would bike up to the dairy about 6am to collect the papers. One morning David Lange stopped in for a coffee he was heading to Wellington anyways he said to me, you are doing a really good job and bought me a pie a drink and some lollies. I have never forgot that encounter with him. No cameras, no phones he geniunly cared for his people. I miss that feeling of trust I once had
Lovely man He wandered onto my property searching for the old graveyard located at the back of my home in Tasmania. He was searching out Scottish ancestors. We had a great chat,
Being Nuke Free is in our dna now. We had a politician (Don Brash) who told the yanks, if he won, the policy would be "gone by lunchtime.". Guess who was gone by lunchtime.
Before he died, after his heart surgery, he came to our med school and filled the largest auditorium, with people sitting on each other's laps and on the stairs and in the lobby. He Was a great Kiwi.
Now this is what a prime minister looks and sounds like. I can't even imagine John Key giving a speech so impassioned as this one. Well, MAYBE unless it was about how much he loves money and/or america, I guess.
Apparently after he played his first game of golf with Obama, John Key gave an impassioned and impressive report to his son. Max reacted with a standing ovation.
Thank you Mr. Lange. May you rest in peace. You were a great voice in the end game of the cold war. New Zealand and the World is a better place because of you.
Yes thanks so much for posting. It's a pity Close Up have butchered the edit - there's a great three minute burst in the middle which has his best lines and interjections. I have the audio, and would desperately love to see the video. Great work finding this though.
Wow. How thoughtful he was to the future of New Zealanders. New Zealander's like me, after 28 years, who can go out and breathe as hard as I want to without worrying what may be in the air, whereas the poor Japanese victims who still struggle after the tsunami in 2011 that caused their nuclear power plant to explode. I'm grateful for Lange. At the same time, my heart goes out to the Japanese victims. Imagine if that were to happen to us NZers. Dangg
Watching and listening to that awesum delivery by a great man and a great Prime Minister, brought tears just as he did on the night of the Oxford debate. Damn it was so great to be a New Zealander, the pride to hear our leader deliver a speech of such power, such sincerity, such sense and such pride in his country. Great politicians are born, David Lange you were great and remain a NZ icon. Love you. Rest in Peace friend.
Back when us New Zealanders had a real reason to be proud. Now it's all 'yeah bro we won the cricket and beef exports to Asia are increasing! change the flag!'
Lol I'm not necessarily disagreeing with what you've said but basically you could reword this to "back when the person I liked was in charge and we were real new Zealanders" it sounds kinda stupid
We still have a real reasons to be proud. And none of the things you've listed we are actually proud of. Its kinda obviois your just blabbing crap to hate on new zealand.
New Zealand has nothing to be proud of and being on some righteous moral high ground... New Zealand elected (twice) a foreign currency banker, to the highest seat of power in our country.

@jwul004 The 'I can smell the uranium breath on your brethh' has gone down in kiwi-folklore, but it's the line you mentioned and 'the iminent prospect of peace breaking out' that make delight me the most.
He was a great, great man! A well endeared and remembered champion of the Polynesian people in NZ who struggled against the misunderstanding and cynicism of the 70’s and 80’s.
I have shared this a few times on Facebook just in case Kiwis, or Americans forget. Some people thought he was just a fat joker but not many people could beat his oratory. A great man. NZ held out against the USA even though we got done over by the French government sanctioned terrorists, but the country held firm. Was and will always be, something we should be proud of.
The other one I really want to see is the 1970s Muldoon interview where he got really cross with the interviewer - I seem to recall for presuming to challenge Muldoon! I know it's on TVNZ's website but it can't be viewed from outside NZ. It would be great to have more Lange material on UA-cam - there is so surprisingly little, but he made such good speeches. The Oxford debate was his crowning glory however and such a proud moment for NZ.
I'm pretty sure that we as a country would shit our collective pants and go Jake the muss on him, however I'm not saying he wouldn't try to sneak it in like the prick he seems to be. the biggest issue I have isnt that he's a douche but that when he's caught being a douche he doesn't seem to give a fuck at all.
Lange was a great PM but remember that he put Roger Douglas in power who demolished the welfare state. As for now, Labour needs to present themselves as a centrist party, win back some of the center vote and then use the Greens to push through the further left policies, in the way that National has used ACT.
Well, actually, it was the Lange government that tore down the welfare state and took this new approach to the economy - a neo-liberal one, as it is often referred to, in a similar vane as the UK and US. Lange took a strong stance on nuclear powered vessels and weapons - one I wholeheartedly support - but the long term damage his government did to the welfare state blemishes his leadership.
F@$kin’ nailed it! As I remember being brought up in a rural national supporting family that we didn’t support Lange but remember he did a great to New Zealand and to humanity. Punching well above our weight again New Zealand
This was a fabulous speech, his powerful rhetoric overwhelmed the listeners. He had a very powerful argument beautifully expressed. Could not have ex;pected better.
Outstanding delivery of the argument and impressive presentation which appeared to carry the evening. Of course, President Reagan and Margaret Thatcher proved him dead wrong. It wasn't the "moral" position that collapsed the Soviet Union and ended the Cold War.
The man who spoke our thoughts so eloquently, with the passion and conviction and in a manner that was competitive and appropriate, the man was and is our ever crying voice saying no to nuclear weapons and FU to the United States of America.
THIS is NZ's greatest contribution to the restoration of sanity (if there already was any in the World?) and makes many great points that, as Lange mentioned, defy rational thinking. David stood up to the US about their nuclear powered ships visiting NZ waters post ANZUS naval exersises in Australia; the fall out was a catastrophic economic situation where NZ'ers saw most SOE's sold to the US and french!
