Your instruction on the Smith Adjustable Knife Sharpener was very helpful.I had tried leaning the blades left and right when sharpening. Resulted in dull blades. After watching your video, I sharpened straight. Resulted in razor sharp blades. Thank you.
I agree about the instructions, they help you on what angle you set it to sharpen your knives. Tried with my Fasthawk and KA-BAR, both got their original edge angle and are sharper now.
I can't believe it. The knob won't come off! It's like it's glued on. LOL Thank you anyway. :-) if I may suggest, they tell us to use it with the knife on a download angle toward the front. IOW, the rear handle is aimed up toward you with the front on the other side of the sharpener aimed down. You can feel the micro-nicks in the blade that way before it becomes sharp.
The Cold Steel website doesn't have individual blade degrees for the Lawman. They recommend using between 23*-25* (You were reprofiling the blade). So, you have to just work to get to 22*. You could put a Sharpie on the bevel and slide the blade until the ink disappears. You are not too far away since you can shave hair and have rough paper cuts.
thanks for making this video, i like the angle adjustment. i have seen other videos, using a small block of wood made with an angle of which ever the knife requires. the block of wood is a great idea but to follow that angle while dragging and turning the tip would be a bit hard to maintain that same angle. I am going to get the pocket pal, i bought the smith diamond, course and fine tool and like it. I do need one for a hatchet and machete, as I use them a lot for cutting wood around our property. Any suggestions for the larger tools?
To add to this, I have a 10mm Kukri that I use for field craft. At first I was only able to get it to 24 degrees with this particular sharpener (I lack the skill and tools to do an inward curve with a stone). After awhile though, I figured out if you place it on a steeper angle, and rest one side on a stone and pass it through, you can get it almost to that angle (of course requiring you to pass it through on both sides). I've actually been able to shave my face with it after. Not as well as my single edge knives, but pretty close. Let it be known that this method will scar your knife due to the resting side being drawn against the stone as well.
I have had problems with those pocket pals myself. I bought two and both of them experienced the same problem in that the actual triangle pieces fell out of the plastic housing. They did not provide enough material to securely hold in the housing. I have since gone back to simple stone and diamond rod.
Background is awesome Fred! I like the adjustable angle gizmo but for home base sharpening these pull through styles are not the best option. If Smiths could put those adjustable angles in the pocket sharpener they would have a winner! Thanks for another top notch vid!
I just got a Lansky which i haven't used yet..I have like 4 or 5 different Smiths sharpeners but i still want this one .Looks cool and all I need is a working edge or better.I missed alittle of your video when you took it apart can you replace the ceramic and carbide
I recently purchased a 15" Cold Steel Dragonfly Sword. The edge is terrible. Cold Steel tells me to go back to the Seller, and Knife Center tells me it's a Cold Steel problem. Other than shipping the knife to a professional, and honestly, my knives cannot wait for me to learn on a wet stone, what would be your recommendation for a great sharpener cost notwithstanding. I wouldn't be afraid to invest a few hundred dollars on a really nice set up. I would greatly appreciate any advice you would be willing to share with me. Thanks a million...very nice demo, by the way!
I received this sharpener about a month ago and I have to tell you it is fantastic. I have read a lot of reviews that badmouthed this item and I have to tell you that the people that wrote those bad reviews either work for other companies or they are just plain ignorant on how to use a pull through sharpener. I have been using this sharpener and putting just short of a razor sharp mirrors edge on all of my folders and find that if you know what you are doing by not putting pressure and or pressing your blades as you pull them through that you will receive a fantastic edge 100% percent of the time.
I like my pocket pal that I recently decided to try, except I gave up on using the ceramic, I found that on mine for some reason, the carbide would sharpen it right up, but than once I used the ceramic to finifh it off, it would actually dull it. I tested it on paper inbetween during the process, and running it on the one I have the ceramic would dull it so bad it would not cut paper. Probally just a lemon though. I plan on replacing it soon anyway.
Tara Baker I have reviewed several Smith's products in the past but do not plan on any new ones in the near future, sorry again. I wish I could review all requested items but I purchase most with my own money and my funds are very limited.
Get your fingers as close to the pivot when pulling the blade ,this gives you more stability during the drag. Also stand and watch the blade from above making sure the spine of the blade is on a straight angle while pulling. If you move the blade sideways while pulling your edge will be ruined.
I've been looking at that system at Walmart for over a year but I didn't know if it was just another gimmick or would would work. Thanks for demonstrating it. Do you think it would sharpen my EDC which is an 11.5 blade and a quarter inch thick?
I had a couple pull through sharpeners an i just hated them even though I only selected ceramic pull through for a reason: to take the pull through apart an sharpen with the now free ceramic rods.
When I 1st brought it in the house everyone thought it was a .99 cent store cheap sprinkler. They were asking "Where do you plug in the Waterhose?"... LOL! Thanks for the 411 on this sharpener here, it's extremely helpful. Can you please recommend a couple of 10 rated sharpener's, I'm still looking to find the best of the best. Thanks again!
I am in the market for a sharpening system, will have to think about a system like this. The other choices are the Lansky and Spyderco rod-systems or go overkill with something like the Edge Apex Pro. Thanks for another informative video.
I have not seen anybody on your comments bring up the subject of using water or oil to help with the sharping process in this type of knife sharpener or could you use water or oil to help or would it not work good in this style knife sharpener? if you or your followers know please hit me back with the answer!!!!
the Smiths 3in 1 is pretty cheap 15.00 on amazon..I had a Kershaw with Sandvik steel that was dull as dull can be.I never sharpened a knife before I brought it to a working edge my 1st time.
i formaly apologise for my last comment fred about how you dont review "higher" end items, this looks a really top notch product im looking to getting one in Great britain. I had a lanksy standard kit before but the quality wasnt there.... cheers fred!
MAYBE you should set the angle the same as your "pocket buddy" and see if it does a better job, just spit balling here thinking that MAYBE because your knife was sharpened "alot" at that smaller angle.......whatever. Another GREAT vid. Because of your last vid, and since it was just the day before my birthday, I now own a Kershaw Kuro....from Walmart....last one they had...and I LOVE it!
I have had this sharpener for about a year now and itis total junk. I used it on a few $40-$50 knives and completely ruined the edges. I figured it would be good as a quick little sharpener but I have since gone back to stones. Do not waste your money on this thing.
For me there is no better than a stone because this kind of tool removes too much steel from your blade, now to find wire it can help but I recommend a water stone, it's the best! Thank you for sharing PS : stop cutting your hair LOL
Break off the flange of a old shitter try to get a peice about 4x6 , I cut mine nice with a diamond blade, that is the best damn knife sharpener you will get if you follow me
For the record, the pocket sharpener you play with in your intro will dull pretty much 95% of your knives. You are obsessed by what exactly? giving biased info?
anyone worth there salt will tell you these pass through devices are crap , they are ok for cheap knives, emergency cases . learn to sharpen with a stone on decent steel you will not regret it. BTW i like you reviews in general
Dude, please don't use these things. They are crap, no ifs and or buts. Just buy a five dollar stone and a leather belt. You will get better results faster. It is not rocket science. Just spend some time learning and you will be much happier. Learn to sharpen, learn to strop, it is fun and rewarding! good luck
I bought one of these. I dulled at least 10 knives.. so I went back and bought another thinking the one I had was defective.. in my opinion this thing does not work it is garbage 😡

BelligerentPandering Thank you so much for sharing your experience with this sharpener with us.
+Gear Obsession so true sir, I'm tickled to read that information!!
I have had problems with those pocket pals myself. I bought two and both of them experienced the same problem in that the actual triangle pieces fell out of the plastic housing. They did not provide enough material to securely hold in the housing. I have since gone back to simple stone and diamond rod.
Where can a person get the replacement sharpening rods? I am talking about the removable sharpeners when they become dull.
Background is awesome Fred! I like the adjustable angle gizmo but for home base sharpening these pull through styles are not the best option. If Smiths could put those adjustable angles in the pocket sharpener they would have a winner! Thanks for another top notch vid!
consider a leather strop with chrome oxide compound on it. They can polish the edge up really nicely
Does it really make a difference though?
on the angles is inclusive or exclusive like 22.5 one side or both?
Where can you order the smith sharpeners ????
I just got a Lansky which i haven't used yet..I have like 4 or 5 different Smiths sharpeners but i still want this one .Looks cool and all I need is a working edge or better.I missed alittle of your video when you took it apart can you replace the ceramic and carbide
How do I know the angle of the knife I am sharpening
Has it got a 30 degree and how large of knife can it do?
How much pressure should you apply, it looks as though you are applying some pressure, but not heavy, is a light amount of pressure sufficient?
Hi , Will any of the two featured knife sharpeners in your video will ever get dull ? {Im talking about the sharpener itself}
Have you tried this on larger knives like a Khukuri?
I recently purchased a 15" Cold Steel Dragonfly Sword. The edge is terrible. Cold Steel tells me to go back to the Seller, and Knife Center tells me it's a Cold Steel problem. hi, could you give me a link where I can find the same mat ? thanks
will it work on pen knives like a stockman
Can you do a review on the smiths sharpening kit
Tara Baker I have reviewed several Smith's products in the past but do not plan on any new ones in the near future, sorry again. I wish I could review all requested items but I purchase most with my own money and my funds are very limited.
How do you know what degree your knife is? i am a newbie to self sharpening
Vito Che Lopez you can usually google it or go on the maker of the knife website
So do I hold the knife's blade STRAIGHT in the V? or hold it on a diagonal against the sides of the V?
Piece of crap... Been doing this and my knife can't even pass the paper test or cut 1 hair...
Great review as normal, I think you are one of the best gear review shows on you tube keep up the good work.

Can this fix tiny chips in my knife? or do I have to use a stone sharpener?
Abdul Alkurdi I think a stone would do better. Great question!!!
How long does the sharpener last for ?
I had a couple pull through sharpeners an i just hated them even though I only selected ceramic pull through for a reason: to take the pull through apart an sharpen with the now free ceramic rods.
whats the price on the sharpener
When I 1st brought it in the house everyone thought it was a .99 cent store cheap sprinkler. They were asking "Where do you plug in the Waterhose?"... LOL! dippster357 I don't think oil would hurt but it is not required. Great question!!!
oil might be ok, but water might get inside the sharpener. where i live rust is a major problem
Thanks for takin the time to give me your opinions on the matter! Gear o. And mark bigger thanks again!
nice, I would think especially for long bladed knives where using a stone would be tougher
the Smiths 3in 1 is pretty cheap 15.00 on amazon..I had a Kershaw with Sandvik steel that was dull as dull can be.I never sharpened a knife before I brought it to a working edge my 1st time.
Why would you throw push in against the knife when 90% of your strokes are pull through only?
i formaly apologise for my last comment fred about how you dont review "higher" end items, this looks a really top notch product im looking to getting one in Great britain. I had a lanksy standard kit before but the quality wasnt there....
cheers fred!
You should use leather strip to get it sharp after sharpening
I had the small smiths pocket pal. i lost it or gave it away. need another.
I bought it and I'm not sure if I'm using it wrong or I'm expecting the wrong results kinda bummed out went of ur review
I love smiths sharpening products. I currently use Smiths Tri-Hone system and it'll get a blade hair popping sharp
Why did you shoot for a 22° edge? Just wanna ask before I jump to conclusions n make a rant comment :p
so just to clarify, are you recommending this product or is it just a pos? Thanks.
if you have limited funds, start a patreon account so your fans can support you with money
Do u have an email for people to ask u questions ?
did he say percent? It's Degrees lol
does this actually work?
Didn't you watch the goddamn video?
Ya I do like the pocket pal to. That would be perfect for hiking . Sweet : )
thanks. for your time and help people

"Wow, it feels terrible"
*Proceeds to rub the blade back and forth in the slot, something the instructions tell you NOT to do*
I need a sharp knife like I need a left thumb! LOL!!
Great review!!
Get the work sharp field guide if you want a good portable knife sharpener.
dry sharpen with this type. water and oil stones tell which to use. good luck dippster357
If you want to really see what your blade looks like, check it out with a jeweler's loupe. You'll be amazed at the view.
the pocket pal chewed your blade up...that's why it feels so rough...those things are junk..i destroyed a knife with one before i wised up
Pretty cool fred!
Fred... your awesome
ya man i see u support the NRA thank you for supporting it it means alot to me and my family
Btw the new background works for me
It works great
I have had this sharpener for about a year now and itis total junk. I used it on a few $40-$50 knives and completely ruined the edges. I figured it would be good as a quick little sharpener but I have since gone back to stones. Do not waste your money on this thing.
lol no need to thank me, i really like your videos
Awesome!

Says to follow instruction then proceeds to not follow instructions
i just use a standard file
★★★★★
Cool Sharpener!
It’s degrees, not percent 🤦🏻♂️
Break off the flange of a old shitter try to get a peice about 4x6 , I cut mine nice with a diamond blade, that is the best damn knife sharpener you will get if you follow me
Mine kinda ruined my knife. It has so many nicks scratches it's so damn rough. I regret spending my money on this junk
GOOD👍STUFF!
less moving around and more explaining, video useful but needs more " attention to detail"

Total garbage
I just came here to watch the video

IM SECOND
I bought one of these. I dulled at least 10 knives.. so I went back and bought another thinking the one I had was defective..
in my opinion this thing does not work it is garbage 😡
I agree, it works alright but I gives me an almost jagged edge and I've been looking for a better sharpener
