cindy blackman santana plays her ass off everytime she sits at the throne. not sure what everyone is trippin on. she loves tony williams, learned alot from him and is showing some love and respect with the rest of the band without being a clone. saw her jazz band last year in dc and she was a monster.
The best part about the original song to me was the incredible electric piano solo by Alan Pasqua and the awesome drum fills that Williams played underneath. Although here John Medeski plays it nothing like Pasqua did, I can really appreciate what he's doing here. It's his usual thing, sort of crazy funky avant garde.
Wildlife MUSt have that album piano sound, that's what always made it gentle for me. Seemed like that was a big part of the feeling of the song. I actually like all these musicians, but it just seems like a shred Fest on this tune.
Hold on there John ! I know this isn't Lifetime but at least Cindy is bringing that music to a wider audience which is great. I loved the TWL and have my own organ based trio that does a lot of this stuff. I have to question the choice of Vernon Reid but hey, this is a million miles away from 'unmusical garbage'. Don't forget TWL were very loud and extremely raucous, way beyond what most folks of the time could palate.
I would love to hear this band play some Soft Machine! Medeski is the most exciting keyboardist I've heard since Mike Ratledge was back in the day, and Cindy could easily play the Wyatt drum parts. Not to mention that Jack Bruce actually was a Soft Machine member briefly.
Even though I have much love for all the musicians on this project, I'm not feeling this. Wildlife and Lady Jane are the two Tony Williams tunes that must be performed with finesse. No finesse here. Sounds like a collision of egos. Sorry, I wish I could be more supportive on this one. I Just can't in do it good conscience.
Sorry. This is nor a tribute. Really... She isn't a good drummer. Horrible. I saw her at the Montreux Jazz Festival (Santana and McLaughlin 40 years celebration of "Love Devotion and Surrender"). The drummer was Dennis Chambers... But... Because she is Santana's wife, she was invited and played some tracks. It was horrible. Frankly. Huge rhythm problems (because she always wanted to kick as loud as Chambers or in a Cobham style, but without precision and techniques...). She completely ruined the concert. Are people deaf! ? She hasn't any delicacy or technique ! Poum tchak, Poum tchack, Poum tchack...
I have no use for this. Cindy Blackman is painful to listen to. Having seen Lifetime a few times with Larry Young and John McLaughlin, I would consider this to be an insult rather than a tribute. Basically loud unmusical garbage.
In the words of Buddy Rich - "I've heard high school bands better than this." I'm pretty sure everyone else would crush it if she could have kept a decent pocket.
Second listen THUMBS DOWN Over indulgence on this tune is just not doing it justice imo. That kinda bothered me and the guitar notes being played and octave lower....Nahhhh sorry ! Shoulda kept it basic and played the melodic high notes on guitar. I love Vernon but this felt all wrong to me. I would have liked to heard the high notes on the melody like it was written and a simple melodic heavy wammy solo like Vernon does so great. Sorry ..maybe they were nervous or didn't think this out too well. Your Ego is NOT your Amigo guys :(
This was a great group of musicians playing together. “Spectrum Road” was a great album. God bless Jack Bruce’s soul. May he rest in peace.
THE best Tony Williams tribute act going 😊
man i love these guys!
I love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My Fav of Tony's

Finally some real music!!
This is so AWESOME , LOVE it !!!
This is a badass lineup. When I saw Ms. Blackman-Santana with the Lifetime Tribute band, Felix Pastorius was on bass. Sick
June 23rd at Seattles Jazz Alley........YES!!!

RULE 1 when playing a tune composed by musical Gods...
KEEP IT SIMPLE AND TRUE TO FORM less is always more !
Rule2 When you are an improvising musician and play a tune made by others make it your own and don't make a copy but an interpretation.

Different musicians interpret different tunes differently. That's a common practice in jazz.

Great job! Vernon nails this one!
To the negs, it's ok, it not twl but you are comparing TW & AH, not too arguably two of the best ever to these guys who are trying respectfully.

Damn, they kinda fucked up the vibe of the entire song, performance gets a botch stamp
That is not an easy song to play so it would take much much more practice to to have this timing right on this song
surprised to see Vernon Reid and Jack Bruce on this. Disappointing

Allan Holdsworth was in the band on guitar for this song. Not McLaughlin.

Right. And apparently, he saw Lifetime when McLaughlin was in them.
NotYourTypicalNegro thats not what he said -
Has that keyboard player EVEN HEARD the Believe It album? ABSOLUTELY HORRENDOUS
that drummer overplays, overki.ll
She overplays every song, each and every . Very unnerving drummer. can not listen to that. makes me nervous.
