I passed through Charlestown Co Mayo in June of 1968. I was hitchhiking to Donegal. Hitched a ride to Charlestown with a load of nails. Later that night someone played the Boston Burglar by Johnny McEvoy. I grew up in Charlestown, Mass. and I did not buy another drink that night. I don't remember where I slept. I will have to replay this video and see if anything comes back to me. Found out in 1986 that my paternal grandmother came from an area near Charlestown Co Armagh. Imagine That.

What I would do to go back to my fathers times . I'm eighteen and from Lahardane . Unfortunately no footage of lahardane in the older days . I envy those who had the luck to be born and live in pre-EU Ireland . Not because of economical matters but because ancient customs had not been effected like they have today . Great Video , makes me want to be able to go back to Ireland again . Such a spiritual and peaceful way of life compared to here in the U.K .

Brilliant footage, well done ! clips like this show a very small slice of life at that time and never to be seen again. That very fact makes footage like this priceless. Would love to see more.

The reopening of the Western Rail Corridor would bring back the train service to the area.

my wife says "still the same". i beg to differ...c'town is quite dead now. luke collerans is about the only place alive & kicking, he's expanding! the fair day looked good; i remember in '64 a fair day on my first trip over, in dungloe. each visit since, one saw changes to where it's non-existent today. jack o'donnells, luke collerans, mary carrolls, and best of all...andrew walshs hall. oh yeah, pat philips, st james church, the ship inn, ita carrs. c'town was a good place to be.

Great video! Been researching family from this area. Cloonaweema to be exact. Noticed a comment on here mentioning name Mulhern from Cloonaweema. Would be curious if the same family.

Brilliant film.. I first went there about '91 when apart from the motors it looked very similar.. the place has changed a lot in the last 15 years.
