    For anyone who doesn’t know!
This is about the Seoul ferry tragedy which happened in 2014.
A short school trip on a ferry was overloaded with too much weight which the ferry could not hold. Not long into the trip, the ferry started to tilt. Instead of telling the students to get off the captain specifically told the students on the ferry that they need to put life jackets on and stay in their dorms, just so he could evacuate. The captain left the boat soon after, and for some reason someone ordered for rescuers not to go and help (a couple people did go instead of following these instructions) even when the ferry began to sank, even the parents watched this on the news, extremely upset as they didn’t have much hope.. Unfortunately, the cabins fell, the ferry flooded with water and all the students who listened were knocked around. Most of the students who listened to the captain died, although a couple were saved/rescued, but not many. Everyone who didn’t listen (approximately 100 out of the over 300 students) survived. This proves that you shouldn’t always follow others and always go with your heart. I can’t believe these poor souls were lost at such a young age. Rip 🕊️🥺

Its almost been 10 years since classmates, teachers, principals and beautiful parents had lost these students, most would've been 27-28 years old this year. The sad part is that some families havent found closure, all we can do is try to put their spirits to rest. All because of stupidity, status and entitled people. May we all next year send our wishes for the students, sisters, brothers, children, parents, friends, family that people had lost. Has anyone looked further into the psychology behind them remaining obedient even in the face of death? I would think that would go against their inate survival instincts. Or did they try to leave and it was just too late?

My best friend had just moved to Seoul a few years before and was on this field trip. She couldn’t swim. She was very skinny from high metabolism and none of the life jackets would fit her. It was the middle of the night and she called me. We were in a big fight and I ignored the call. I woke up the next morning to a voice mail from her saying “your my best friend and I love you so much, never forget me. I’m sorry for fighting with you, I wish I got to hear you once more.” I tried calling probably 20 times then I called her mom. She told me while sobbing, I didn’t go to school for probably a week and half, almost two weeks. I wish I answered that phone call, we were just about to graduate. We had a oral report a few weeks later as a final grade. We could partner up or do it solo. I partnered with her boyfriend, we did it on this, I started sobbing. You never know when your going to lose someone, no matter how mad you are at someone, always answer their phone call, you never know if it’ll be the last time you hear their voice.

    *explanation*
“Isn’t this the kind of situation when they tell you, ‘Stay put; it will be O.K.,’ and they run away for their lives?” A teen-age girl is talking with a group of friends, in footage that seems to be cell-phone video. The walls of the ferry they are riding, the M.V. Sewol, are leaning at a distressing angle. But the scene is surprisingly calm. No one is running or shouting-the group is patiently waiting for further instructions from the intercom, which has just told passengers to stay where they are. The girl in the video recalls a subway accident in which passengers were similarly told to stay put. “But only the people who didn’t follow the order survived.”
Disasters are marked by moments not only of chaos and terror but of indecision and confusion, as minds race to make choices with incomplete and disorienting information. When one is taking a routine ferry trip, the kind of crossing that occurs dozens of times a day without incident, and that ferry begins to tilt violently and sink into the sea, how do passengers decide what to do? A perfectly rational reaction, on first instinct, is to follow authority and believe that the crew, the captain, and those trusted with operating, commissioning, and regulating the ferry service will know the best course of action. But what happens when leadership breaks down? The above video, “In the Absence,” shows what happened inside the M.V. Sewol, the passenger ferry that sank while travelling between the South Korean city of Incheon and Jeju Island, on April 16, 2014.
During one of the first emergency calls from the M.V. Sewol, at 8:52 a.m., an operator asks a passenger for the ship’s location. The passenger tells the operator that he does not, of course, know the exact location. It’s a large, sinking vessel in the middle of an open body of water-difficult to place but hard to miss. Minutes later, an announcement goes out over the intercom: “Please don’t move. Stay put,” a woman’s voice says. “And stand by.”
Just after 9:20 a.m., a transportation official urges the captain to make a decision on whether to begin evacuation procedures. Reports would later show that the captain would wait another ten minutes to deliver the command to evacuate. Most survivors did not recall hearing any such command, and the absence of an orderly and structured escape plan multiplied the losses.
Nearly an hour after the first emergency calls, the captain jumped a railing, landed on a patrol boat, and abandoned ship. More than a hundred passengers were still sheltering in place onboard. A hundred and seventy-two passengers and crew survived the disaster; three hundred and four died in the sinking, most of them high-school students on a class trip.
How many could have been saved if the evacuation had taken place immediately, or if there had been clear procedures and a hierarchy of communication in place? What if the people onboard, instead of obeying misguided orders and waiting for instructions that never came, had decided to fend for themselves? South Korean law enforcement and the families and friends of the victims have grappled with these questions in the aftermath.
The captain and fourteen other members of the crew were convicted on charges related to the sinking. Yoo An-sil, the mother of Yu Mi-ji, one of the passengers who died in the sinking, describes a final phone conversation with her daughter with immense regret. “I told her to follow the teacher’s guidance,” she says. “I should have told her to escape quickly. But I didn’t know the situation.”

For those who are looking for an explanation:
There was a ferry incident, on board the ferry were mostly kids/teenagers from a school. The ferry started sinking and the captain evacuated himself instead of the hundreds of children on board, some people survived but most died. The sad fact is that there was a couple (teens) who were found dead on the ferry still holding hands, the person that found them there was so heartbroken that they decided to commit. The captain was very selfish.

Guys, please remember that it wasn't just this one man's selfishness that ended the lives of those kids that day.
The Korean government and officials also played a hand. They were offered help to assist and evacuate from other governments that had resources in that area and denied it because they wanted to look good for saving the kids themselves.
A lot of the crew of that ship also played a hand. They also chose to evacuate to save themselves over telling the kids to evacuate and ensure that people got out safely.
These kids were let down by everybody involved. Do not just blame the captain. Do not allow the others to forget that they also let these kids die.
Even if only one more member of the crew or one official had cared about saving those kids or others that day, 295 people would not have lost their lives.
Instead the 3 crew members that did stay against orders to help passengers were also lost.
    Park Jiyoung
    Jeong Hyunseon
    Kim Kiwoong
These 3 crew members gave their lives to try to save the kids but it wasn't enough. Had other crew members second guessed orders or had a moral compass we'd have many more families that would have been able to see their children again.

For ppl who don't know this is called sewol ferry tragedy, it happened in 2014 April 16.
Students from danwon highschool were going on a school trip to jeju island in south Korea, the first day the ship was ok but the next morning the students noticed that their breakfast was tilted and was confused then they realised the ship was sinking. One student named doekha choi was the first person to call authorities and stayed on call with them.
The captain kept telling the students to stay in their spots and don't move, while the students were still on the ship some were calling and texting their parents saying their last words like 'i love you' and stuff, joking around with their friends, thinking they are going to be rescued, but some students noticed that the life jackets they were wearing were made in the 1900s so they were more worried. The captain managed to escape by disguising as a normal passenger and was one of the few people who escaped.
Some students got rescued but some unfortunately pass away, when there were still people in the ship at 10pm (the sinking was at 9am so the ship didn't sink fully yet) the water was very calm but the recuse people were doing NOTHING. They were just on a boat surrounding the ferry but doing nothing. The devastated parents were screaming at the rescue people 'THERE ARE STILL CHILDREN IN THERE' but they did nothing, they kept saying 'the water is too active!' but it was as calm as a lake. Most people got rescued by nearby fishermen on their boats. Some rumors say that there was a couple but friends of the 'couple' said that they never spoke to eachother, the two people were in a room together while the ship was sinking and in their last moments they tied their life jacket cords together. Over 300 people died and 250+ of them were students.
(I got carried away and made it really long)
You can also hear more about the tragedy from rotten mangos video about the sewol ferry tragedy

Thanks for sharing about what happened. I had no idea this happened back then. It's horrible. Why refusing help from other countries to save your own citizens? It could have been the fear the truth could have been uncovered and so the true murderer, the plot, would have been discovered? I'm sure everyone on board would have accepted help regardless if given by Koreans or not. This looks like a political revenge with one kid targeted for being the son or daughter of a politician or someone who was a threat for an election or witnessed a crime, or anything else causing a threat, in my opinion. Who knows. It's obvious the rescue team let them drown as they were given STRICT ORDERS to not try and rescue anyone. So someone of power was behind this whole thing. The whole situation was manipulated to succeed no matter how many people would be killed. This sounds like it was planned, the captain of the ferry could have been informed about this, it feels like he knew something prior to the accident or heard something when calling to get help... How to prove that anyway? It was made to look like an accident. I'm sorry to say all this, I've got carried away as well. I hope justice was made. This was PURE CRUELTY, EVILNESS, INJUSTICE.
Also, imagine that it's your job to rescue people but you're threatened to not rescue a soul, you can only watch and hear the cries amd screams from people dying. Traumatic. The captain as well, he was blamed but what if he was also under orders with threats agaisnt his family? I've never heard of a captain being selfish before, especially with the lives of children. It doesn't add up. It's all. Everyone's that was there and survived or could only watch are definitely traumatized for the rest of their life. It ruined so many people's lives, I bet.
There is true evil in this world. and we give it power. This is horrifying.

    The Sewol ferry tragedy:
The students and teachers were going on a field trip to Jeju Island traveling by a ship. The second day on the ship, students noticed that the ship was tilted. It was tilting because how much cargo they put on the ship. The captain told everyone to go to their cabins with their life vest. Almost everyone followed the captain’s directions and the rest didn’t. Meanwhile the captain evacuated first and the few other students and teachers did, but the students were trapped inside the ferry. Rescuers came and saved more people. The boat was about to tip over with more students and teachers inside the ferry. As soon as the ship completely turned upside down, they sent divers to save more. But it was too late when everyone else sadly passed away. The people who listened to the captain died and the people who didn’t survived. Rest In Peace students and teachers who passed away in this tragedy.

Context: The kids are from a school and are going on a field trip to an island. When boarding the crew members knew that they had more than the amount the ship can carry but the captain decided they could carry more than the amount. When they departed the cargo was not properly secured and made the ship have poor stability due to cargo movement. The ship started tilting until it was laying on its side. The captain ordered the crew to tell the kids to stay down in their rooms until it was safe. Unfortunately the captain then acted like a normal passenger so that he would be safe and left the kids to drown inside the room. Two students who were boyfriend and girlfriend tied their hands together so that they would stay together and not float away from each other. Sadly 250 students died that day and only 75 survived. This would have been prevented if the captain didn’t carry twice the amount the ship was able to carry and if the crew members secured the cargo correctly

    okay so basically,
Theses kids (high school) went on a school trip. There was to Manny cars on the ship so it went down. Most of the crew (not all) left the kids in the ship and went out to leave and escape. When questioned, the captain claimed no one was in the ship when kids were in there. They left this announcement on and it said to stay in. All of the parents last texts to the kids pretty much said the same thing - Listen to what they say. American ships offered to help bc they have all the tools but Korea said no. The people who had to save them apparently did not do ANYTHING and the parents had to save the kids. The people there said no but divers offered to help. Some kids escaped, but others lost their lives. An 21 year old on the crew saved some people and so did the gym teacher. The vice principal took his life since the trip was his idea and all parents were blaming him. Korea tried to make the parents forget about it by giving money but all the parents wanted was their kids.

This made me cry for a while…
Even though it’s so sad it actually happened 7 years ago-
I’d say the saddest thing about the students was when they called their parents and said “mom, dad, I love you the most”and they just acted happy and smiled while crying…

I watched all of the documentaries and I still can't watch them without getting full on body chills. What happend to these children is so intensely brutal, there truly is no right word for it.
Hearing the cries of the parents wanting to risk their own lives, trying to save their own ( and other ) children. The anger, the pain and everything recorded is just so heartbreaking to watch. None of these souls deserved to go so soon.
Multiple teachers stayed behind with the children and passed on, fighting for those kids. I have immense respect for all people involved who tried their best and gave their lives for them. May all the victims rest softly.

@@swatiisingh123basically there was a field trip with a lot of students teachers and some other civilians on a ship something happened and instead of evacuating them the captain left a recording on that said “don’t move stay in place” and evacuated himself. This ended in tragedy as almost everyone that day died (not everyone but almost). There was actually a case of two students who didn’t know each other tying their life vest together so they don’t die alone. There is another couple who tied a rope to each other because the girlfriend was scared when she died they would drift away from each other they died hugging each other tightly. Students made phone calls to their parents and let other students use their phones so there are some pretty horrible vice recording and voice mails.

So basically what happend was they were on a school trip on a boat and the boat started sinking but only the driver knew so he told the students to stay put and the driver evacuated instead of the students so more then 500+ students died on that school trip😞

whats even worse is one said "isnt this the type of situation when director leaves" she was right, and one student said "its always the people dont listen to instructions that end up surviving in accidents", then 2 people that didnt know each other well tied their life jacket strings so they dont die alone. Rest in peace you are still missed.
