Thank you Kenny Barron for being the perfect accompanist to the great Stan Getz in his final days. It was only fit that he should have the best and you were, and still are, it.
I sat with a friend and we listened to People Time on the 2 discs from begging until end without one word said. It was the most rewarding jazz experience that I have ever had.
Every time I hear this timeless track it brings tears too my eyes... Such a great song "People Time" something we as a world should do more often... The title speaks for itself.... Rest In Peace Stan Getz a great jazz legend.
very very very sensitive & crystal clear a terrific duo well worthy of their profession. what a pity getz is no longer around, but never never forgotten.superbe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He was my hero....the times he came to Toronto and we sat upstairs and just talked bullshit!! I thought he was from anther planet..the sound...oh...that beautiful sound that no one else could get from the reed...he was a quiet man....he let his music tell his message..I mis him...I miss his sound..i miss the passing of the generation of his kind of music..it brings home in sharp contrast to me that I will be joining him soon!!!
It doesn't get better than this. Two of my very favorite musical wizards - the sum is so much more than the individuals here and that's saying something.
Two Musicians who are seamlessly joined at the hip with their instruments and the music. Outstanding and thanks for those who made the the trip through technology with them, and for us to enjoy forever....Wow!
One wouldn't know how ill Stan Getz was by his timeless beautiful & lyrical playing at this Munich Concert, Stan's Final Concert in 1990 and Album- Stan played with such beauty and soul till his last breath.....
Their improvisational skill and musicianship one can only dream of. There will never ever be a more brilliant and affecting duo in the history of music, FINAL.
Superb track. Stan Getz was one of those great musicians who kept on evolving - perhaps not as radically as Miles - but adding layers of emotional experience and depth to his playing. Kenny Barron was the perfect foil, sensitive and responsive but never intrusive. (though George Cables was another wonderful accompanist for Getz). The great thing about modern technology, audio and video, is we will never forget these memorable musicians.
If people pay attention to music life, would not happen so evil. Smooth jazz will always bring us love and peace. I appreciate posting, music is fantastic!
All evil in the world, starts from those who know how to manipulate people.World politics is done by rich people who do not care about us. I'm glad you commented, I appreciate this. To have long and beautiful life.:-)
Amen. Peace and good will for and to all people of our world. Life is very short; we can not afford not to sow positive and constructive seeds. Stan and Kenny have done so with this performance.
Stan & Kenny, one of the last times playing together! the "Long Island Sound" was to leave this planet only 2 months after this recording, (video) and we are left with this beautiful sound from the last concert which was organized with the help of Herb. Alpert& held in the Munich philharmonic!!
I think he could play such a lovely phrases because of his getting cancer. Cancer which is killing him inspired him to play the tenor to live,to bless.
I agree with you and you described it well. The sonic space he left open for Stan to fill it in is completely right. It's not how many notes you play but wich notes you play, less is more in this case.
And Stan Getz arrives at the Pearly Gates ....and the angel says...’what is your name” and he says ...”Stanley Newcombe Getz”....then St. Peter turn around to an angel and said “ i am sorry...but you are sitting in the seat reserved for this Legend.....please leave!!”
I agree completely! That crystal clarity to me seems like its because of how open and airy Kenny's voicings are. There are keys players out there who clog the changes with too many notes and too much sound. Granted, that can have an effect of power and grandeur when done right, i.e. McCoy. But Kenny leaves sonic space for Stan to fill, and it builds this beautiful and fluid soundscape to which I could just listen for hours!
For Anyone, who is interested in any transcription from the record " People Time": I've completly transcribed it. Just ask me, and I could send you the transcript. Transposed to alt: no problem Send me a message.
Fantastic recording too. I'm listening on these crappy PC speakers and the treble range on Kenny's piano is awesome, by far the best I've heard ... what equipment was used for the recording.
It was recorded over several days at Cafe Montmartre copenhagen by Johnnie Hjerting ,DR ENG van (Danish Radio). Later People Time album came out with several extra recordings in more variants. If you listen very carefully, you can actually hear people talk, and the sound of bottles at the tables. Hjerting made numerous other recordings with Stan and had a very high acceptance, he considered these recordings some of his finest.
This kind of music gets right to my soul! I love it.
Thank you Kenny Barron for being the perfect accompanist to the great Stan Getz in his final days. It was only fit that he should have the best and you were, and still are, it.
Oh yes, if only for his impeccable voicings.

there all are really smooth something even in rest of sax. How special their duo is!
thes two cds are really the best of all the jazz !!!!

I love this song, Stan and Kenny were great together.
revisit & still superb.none better than this is there.
It is impossible to find words to describe this performance. Simply fantastic!
Priceless moment to enjoy..."The sound" at his very best...

Well said.
Thank you Buckshot.
Don't think it gets any better than this.
AMEMIYA SAN
one of my favorite recordings wish i could have seen them live.

deianhopkin - beautifully described. You know your music and life is enriched by those that do.

It's my first time hearing this tune. So beautiful...
That's exactly what I like to hear! AIt's aways great to discover something "new".

What a couple of STUDS. The ascension Stan takes at 1:54 is so beautiful.
Just as nice as soul eyes!

@spadge1able
There is a double CD called People Time. This entire two-disc set is absolutely beautiful. One of my favorite CD sets.
Yes!👍
I think he could play such a lovely phrases because of his getting cancer. Cancer which is killing him inspired him to play the tenor to live,to bless.
apparently this was his last live performance....Stan is still the MAN.
God, he goes straight to my heart.
Beautiful.
I agree with you and you described it well.

@LaLapin1 Same here, I'm hearing this tune for the 6th time in a row, haven't done anyhting else in the past half hour. It's wonderful.
True. It' not from "People Time" session but this song is also performed on that album.

I'd die to watch "Night and Day" from this concert. I can't find it on youtube :/
@LaLapin1 That's really cool. I always imagined he was that way. I think that to play that beautifully you have to have a good soul.
