I'll try to insert it as a notation in the video, but not everyone can see those, so I'll put it here also. from The evolution of Gregg Shorthand , by John Robert Gregg in The Gregg Writer, June 1931 “To understand the division of the system into two parts (here Gregg speaks of the first two 1888 pamphlets), the purpose of the author must be kept in mind, as expressed in the first sentence of the preface of the first edition: ''A great and increasing demand for a simple, rapid, and perfectly legible phonetic handwriting for general use has led to the invention of Light-Line Phonography.'' The purpose, it will be seen, was not so much the production of a superior system of shorthand for commercial or reporting purposes as a simplified form of brief writing "for general use." Hence the first pamphlet was intended for that purpose, and the second pamphlet was intended to provide abbreviations for those who desired to use shorthand for· business or reporting work. While it is true that the closing paragraph of the Preface declared that it was not merely a simple system but one "rapid enough to reproduce verbatim the fastest oratory," the dominant thought was "a shorthand for general use.” I clung to that idea tenaciously until it became clear that the only way in which I could earn a livelihood was by teaching shorthand for business purposes. In yielding to this necessity. I use Gregg shorthand for personal use. I studied Gregg shorthand Simplified and write everything with it including in my diary. But I also want to be able to write as fast as I think and try to write down dictation. so my goal is to do both.
I've started using the Evernote Rocketbook (spiral bound smart notebook) which offers some interesting features. One is that it can be scanned and sent to different depositories simultaneously. Also it is easily erasable and pages cleared for new use. I'll see how it's OCR handles mixed use of longhand and shorthand. Should be interesting.
@Howard_Wallace If I understood right, notetaking is not focused much on phrasing and dictation and rely on new/hard phrases on longhand to avoid confusion. Thus it would be better to continue on gregg notehand books after learning from your 1-5 parts of gregg shorthand. Which Gregg Notehand book do you suggest for personal notetaking focused writing?
+xdvarpunen Either of the Greg Notehand books are good. Whichever one you can get your hands on will serve your purpose. I believe both are still under copyright and may be difficult or expensive to obtain. Another option is to use the free Anniversary Edition materials that are on my resources page. They are oriented towards business use but may be used with discretion to advance your note taking skills. Just don't spend too much energy learning specialized business vocabulary or phrases. Any of the other Gregg series books may be used in a similar manner.

Great idea for starting out. Learn some of the most common words and write them in Gregg, writing others as normal. You can slowly add in more based on the frequency with which you write them.
You have it within you to progress in the direction you desire. Clarify within yourself what you wish to work on. Then seek out the opportunity to move in that direction. UA-cam should have some good tutorials.
Howard Wallace fine lecture! I must say, though, as a kid I saw my late father employ his Gregg Shorthand all the time for brief personal notes. No mental strain whatsoever for him! Probably because he was a Diamond Medalist.
I'm interested in your desk. My mom inherited one like it from my father's side of the family. It came from my great uncle. He was from Ohio. I could swear it's the same desk it's so close. The one in my family has a glass topper to protect the wood.
The centennial edition is still under copyright. Legal PDF will probably not be available. The basic shorthand is the same between editions. The major differences are in the brief forms that are taught in each edition. Most writers will soon develop their own set of frequently used brief forms anyway.

In a weird way, abbreviations and shortcuts for individual words seems like it's going toward the system of Chinese ideograms!

Even while alive, you can see how the orientation changed from his first pamphlet used in these videos, to the more business oriented later editions.
