    All it takes is to simply add a tool or an option that lets us choose which surface to show on top of the other, so they won't fight.

    Another great video, Justin. Instead of adding thickness (the rug in your example), I move the grouped material away from the other surface. I use .01". That's enough to stop the Z-fighting and it doesn't add any additional geometry.

      I don't know why, but for some reason I don't really like leaving objects with no thickness in my models, but I can't really think of a reason why I have that preference - I think this solution works fine as well :)

    There is a simple trick to solve this problem.
    Select a grouped model, on entity info tray, you can change the default paint to any color you want or even change it to a texture image. Select edit, change the opacity to 99 instead of 100. Make sure all materials or grouped model have been set to opacity 99. Also, the paint icon on entity info tray should not be set into default color (white and gray icon). And there you go.
    This trick will be useful for those who are working in 2D view or doing 2D plan in sketchup. Hope it helps.

    Thanks for sharing. I like using component cut-outs for carpets and pictures to fix that problem and also making placements easier. I found that adding enough thickness is important when you zoom out because background edges tend to come through otherwise.

    • @Thesketchupessentials

      Personally I wouldn't use cut components for this, but if it works for you, go for it! The second part is definitely important - I probably should have spent more time on that in the video - oh well :p

    A cool trick: I you REALLY want to have two flat grouped faces, one on top of the other, without flashing/ Z-fighting, then you just apply 99% opaque material to both of them. Then I guess the material that was created last would be displayed on top. This remaining 1% of transparency on your materials you'll never notice. Boom, flashing gone!

    One comment and one question:
    The third method is not to pull the plane to get thickness, but raise it up. The amount that the plane needs to be raised will vary depending on the distances involved in the model and views. If you are looking at the plane from close, it's likely there will be no issue. If you are looking from 1000 feet away, there WILL be an issue. This is frequently problematic when doing 3D site plans. Let's say you have imported GeoLocated Terrain and Snapshot, or imported site imagery from Placemaker. Now you trace over the landscape or civil plan for the new work, and that's on another layer of course.
    You need to show the existing snapshot imagery in the back, and just the new-work area above it. So you lift the new work up maybe 2"...and if you have the flashing problem, lift it up like 12". That will usually solve it. But...it creates an issue for modeling because now your working plane outside the building is 12" higher than your level one floor. One thing to note is that you usually do not want the group for your new landscape/civil to cast a shadow onto the underlying site. So when you select it, go to the Entity Info dialog box and uncheck "Cast Shadows". This will speed up rendering too.
    OK, here's my related question. Justin, if you look at your tiny house model...lets' say you have made exterior walls with thickness...8" or whatever. And the blue siding has thickness (say 2" ) because you need to see how the siding interacts with windows/doors/trim. ( Plus, if you cut a section, you'll see the siding/rainscreen assembly thickness.) OK. You apply the clapboard texture to the siding group. And when you're close, everything looks great. When you back out to see the house on the site....you are now getting flashing between the 3D siding "slab" and the underlying 3D walls. EVEN THOUGH THE SIDING HAS THICKNESS!
    This is a real PITA because it means you have to turn off your exterior walls and ONLY view the siding. This is a serious issue that sketchup never solves year after year.
    BTW-last comment- for those of you having the "clipping plane" issue especially when you get close to objects and your "head goes thru the glass aquarium"...Look at Mind Sight Studios website. Daniel Tal and the guys that make Placemaker have an extension that solves the issue perfectly. It's $50 and it's called Clipping Plane. It's a one time fee and it WORKS. This is the stuff that Trimble should be fixing when we pay for new versions. It's been a problem for all twenty years or so I've been using Sketchup.

    As your floor example was Z-Fighting with the door opening arc, you could shrink the door 1/8 so it is not sitting on the same plane as the floor. In practice you would have a gap all around the door to frame, so including it in the drawing would solve that issue.

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  4 роки тому +1

      I would not recommend this, because you'd be raising your door up off the floor. Then if you inference from points on that door you'd be drawing lines above plane, which could cause a mess

    • @blackdogbite
      @blackdogbite 2 роки тому

      The easiest way to deal with THAT, is to have your door component contain the 2D graphics (slab and swing arc) on one layer (DOORWIND-2D), and the 3D objects on another layer (DOORWIND-3D). Then you can only turn on the 2D graphics when you are in plan views. The whole component would then go on a "master layer" such as DOORWIND-NEW or DOORWIND-EXG (you want the layers to stack on top of each other when you're looking for them in the Tags dialog box/list.)

    The problem with adding thickness is when you snap other object to the corner of the group, since it has 2 corner with really small distance, sometimes it snap to the other corner that you're not intended to

  • @moodberry
    @moodberry 3 роки тому

    I think the best fix for this is to put them on their own layer. This will work in almost all situations and doesn't require you to change your face in any way (like in giving it some thickness. This is more efficient in your work flow

    Thanks so much for the video!! one of the most frustrating (even though important) features in sketchup.
    I am, though, struggling with a specific type of z-fighting. The one that is created when one polygon would show z fighting because it has textures on both of it's faces. I was wondering if the truly is the same issue as with different groups, and, is there a smart and effective way to deal with it?
    thank you again so much! your channel is great and you are too! :)

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  5 років тому +1

      I don't understand - if it's Z-fighting, it's because you have 2 sets of faces occupying the same space...I'm not aware of a "specific" kind of Z-Fighting....

    • @pashabelsky2758
      @pashabelsky2758 5 років тому

      @@Thesketchupessentials so - I think I need to provide some more details.
      Firstly, I was meaning z-fighting that took place in 3rd-party software (GIS Pro), and not Sketchup itself.
      Secondly, I was referring to a z-fighting that accrued because I had one surface - colored from both sides (still fits your explanation about populating the same space).
      And finally, I have found an answer by mistake - and boy, I was surprised!
      Turned out, when you color a group (from the outside, without entering in) - it will apparently do nothing, while in reality - it will paint ALL THE INNER SURFACES!!! :)

    • @Thesketchupessentials

      It sounds like you're applying materials to the outside of a group instead of to a raw face

    • @blackdogbite
      @blackdogbite 2 роки тому

      Mike
      You are having layers/tags issues. Remember, EVERYTHING goes into a group. Your walls are distinct solids in their own group (and on it's own layer). The floor/slab is it's own group (and on it's own layer). (and yeah- give them thickness so they are 3D) Your wall treatments can be another group, on it's own layer. The floor finishes can be another group(s) on their own layer. Now you can apply materials to your floor and it won't affect anything else. (Note that sometimes it will work to "paint" the whole group. Some textures, especially if you need to adjust the scale or direction of the texture, you will have to paint INSIDE the group)
      The other thing this allows is to have variations. For example, you could have a layer 3D-FLOR-FNSH-OPTION1 and another layer called 3D-FLOR-FNSH-OPTION2. Now in one scene tab, you can turn on only the "option 1" layer and in another scene tab you can turn on only the option 2 layer. You can have the living room, kitchen, toilet, and dining room all be separate groups and put them all on the option 1 layer...and have a completely different set on the option 2 layer.
      Its ALL about discrete groups and discrete layers!!!!!
      Here's another trick I came up with. You need organized names for your layers so they makes sense, so you can find them, and so you have them on every project.
      I do a layer nomenclature system like in the old days with AutoCAD.
      A-3D-ENTR-VEHICLES
      A-3D-ENTR-PEOPLE
      A-3D-FLOR-NEW
      A-3D-FLOR-EXG
      A-3D-FLOR-FNSH
      A3D-DOORWIND-NEW
      A-3D-DOORWIND-EXG
      A-2D-DOOR GRAF-NEW
      A-2D-DOORGRAF-EXG.
      P-3D-FIXT
      E-3D-FIXT
      L-3D-PLANTINGS
      ETC
      Make all the layers you will need, in a new drawing...layers for entourage, layers for wall treatments, layers for flooring layers for furniture, layers for lighting, layers for plumbing, layers for site stuff.....
      And then, in the same new drawing, make a bunch of 12" squares. Make the first square a GROUP and copy down and across like 50 or 100 of them. As many layers as you have and then some. (if you end up with fifty layers, make 60 squares)
      Select them one at a time, and in the Entity Info dialog box, scroll and select the first layer (tag) in the list. You have now just put that first square into the A-3D-WALL-NEW layer/tag.
      Proceed to put each square into it's own layer.
      At the end of that boring process...you will have a bunch of squares/groups....each on their own separate layer.
      Now...save the drawing. Call it MASTER-LAYERS, or something like that. Save it to where you save your personal components into a clearly labeled folder.
      Then, in Components dialog box, the blueish little arrow icon...Open or Create a Collection.
      Browse to, and select, the folder with your new component.
      Now you'll see you newly-created component.
      Anytime you start a new drawing...first thing you do is grab and place that component. Now you have all the layers you are used to using, inserted in your new drawing instantly.
      You can do the same thing for materials/textures that you like and use all the time.
