Robert (or FPGAZumSpass) is done with active development of the MiSTer FPGA N64 core, giving us 99% of a fully functioning Nintendo 64 on MiSTer FPGA. Let's talk about what happened now that the MiSTer FPGA N64 core is in Update_All!
and that means a LOT of people asking me if you can play the arcade versions of Cruis'n USA and Killer Instinct...NO...because Nintendo lied to you! Sure the Seta Aleck 64 existed as an arcade board but Midway did NOT use Nintendo 64 hardware in the arcades!
The impossible Nintendo 64 FPGA core just got updated again on MiSTer FPGA! With huge improvements to the MiSTer FPGA N64 core bringing new life to so many best retro games! We now have LOD or level of detail which is another N64 hardware feature added to the MiSTer FPGA N64 core! N64 FPGA fun incoming! and now we have YUV support too so we have a FEATURE COMPLETE N64 FPGA core! and now Bangai-O has been fixed and is playable!
and here comes the big tests! Is MiSTer FPGA as good as real hardware for N64?
and now we have a MiSTer FPGA N64 Turbo core! That runs many games faster and better than a stock Nintendo 64!
The MiSTer N64 FPGA core was just updated and now TLB on N64 in FPGA is complete! A huge milestone for the Nintendo 64 MiSTer FPGA core is here!
It's a huge day for MiSTer FPGA and N64 fans...because every single retail game ever released for the Nintendo 64 now boots on MiSTer FPGA! FPGA gaming is huge for retro gaming fans and today marks the 100% of MiSTer FPGA N64 games booting! Banjo Tooie came in...at least place!
This is in addition to the N64 FPGA cor, bringing Killer Instinct Gold, Mario Golf, Twisted Edge Snowboarding, Super Mario 64 and Turok 2 to MiSTer FPGA for the first time! (ok just ONE part of Super Mario 64)
and now Paper Mario, Castlevania 64, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, Bomberman 64, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon and more!

If you need a setup guide my previous Nintendo 64 MiSTer FPGA video has that so here you go: • MiSTer FPGA N64 Core G...
I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Terasic DE-10 Nano MiSTer FPGA hardware...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness.
On this episode of our MiSTer series we are going to be talking about the recent happenings in the MiSTer FPGA scene in regards to the potential of a Nintendo 64 core for MiSTer FPGA! Nobody saw it coming...and it was long considered an "impossible core" but perhaps Nintendo's first 3D console might be coming to MiSTer soon! Which would be amazing as there are a ton of great games for it and software emulation, while much improved, is still a bit hit or miss. Plus modding a N64 for HDMI out is expensive and VERY difficult!
N64 on MiSTer FPGA would be a huge moment for video game history and preservation too!
The N64 core RSP work seems to be getting buttoned up...so next comes the RDP or Reality Display Processor which is in progress and it now has perspective correction built in! . Which means we can now "play" Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Wave Race 64, even The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask...and some other items! and most of the corrupted graphics have been solved by this point in time! Plus F-Zero and Pokemon Snap now too! and Cubivore! And Animal Crossing...and 007 (no not GoldeEye yet) plus Pokemon Stadium! And Harvest Moon 64, and Extreme G and Glover 64...plus some beta Ocarina of Time!
But after the PS1 core on MiSTer (developed by Robert as well) and the PSX 2X core…nobody should doubt his talents!
and when it comes out just play Bomberman Hero, the N64 hidden gem of choice around this channel!
Questions? Comments? Just leave them below and I will do my best to answer each and every one of them!

To counter your argument of false advertising by Midway/Nintendo: Those attract mode promos never explicitly stated that Killer Instinct or Cruis'n USA were running on the exact same hardware or identical technology, they only said that these games will soon be *Available in your home. Only on Nintendo Ultra 64.*
So it wasn't actually a lie, but rather a loose technicality.

@@longann7560 Not wrong. KI1 was announced to be released in 1995 for their new console. Because the console was not ready for that year, they released a port of KI1 on SNES. Because of success of KI1, they had a sequel of KI1 developed in 1995 and released in the beginning of 1996 for arcades. They were not sure if the console will be ready for release in 1996 but devs could start developing games for it based on established specs. And because KI2 was their newest KI games in the series, they started porting it for SNES and N64. That is why we did not get KI1 on N64. And because N64 was released in USA in 1996, they did not release KI2 on SNES.

This is a case of terrible marketing causing people to think things that weren't going to be true. Nintendo never said the home hardware would be the same as the arcade hardware. Killer Instinct says "coming to Ultra 64 in 1995", it doesn't say it's the same hardware at home or that it's not a port. It was intended as "hey, buy this home console if you want a version of this for the home" not "the arcade version will be exactly the same as the home version when released".

Sadly, they probably couldn´t device a way to cram the original´s 300Mbytes + of data into an N64 cartridge, or maybe it was to costly at that moment. So for not completly decieve people, they decided to port it to the SNES hardware so you could at least say that you could play Killer Instinct on a Nintendo home console on 1995.

Want a hoax in videogames?, THE SNES!, How?, like knowing that the arcade ports that they gave us were TOTAL BARGAINS, for example the FM Towns port of Super Street Fighter 2, which is 256x224, max 256 colors, and feels like the real SSF2 port for Snes and maybe Genesis also. Like Gizada said, the guy who created the Killer Instinct upgrade MSU1 patch, CPS2 gameplay and looks are easy for Snes, and by taking a look at the Snes development manuals you can confirm that. FUN FACT!, the Sne can display up to almost 2050 colors in modes 3 and 4 (BG1), and still have the entire 256 colors for sprites and other backgrounds at its disposal, THE MEMORY?, by the mid 90s this wasn't an issue anymore for these arcade games (like SSF2), even decompression chips were cheaper. A few potential situations that could possibly explain it. Companies sometimes develop two sets of hardware, or determine hardware can't be done cheap enough, or so too expensive. Maybe this happened with the Ultra 64, maybe it happened with the Nintendo 64 arcade board, and there was a switch out? If the advertising deal was already signed, maybe the arcade company kept it.
Maybe the silicon graphics chip didn't manufacture as high performance as expected (remember the HD mode, was that 1024 across, then it didn't feature). It was delivering less than expected. A real let down. If you play golden eye, it's not that much graphically, except bump mapping, which a brand of cheap 3D card had, at sometime. It's like they needed to beef it up and put a mini cd in it. Actually!
It could have been some changes after the midway advertising deal was struck, and both companies could have dropped the advertising.
It's a shame, if only they had it with better performance at 1024*768, with a computer version with optical disc, it would have been pretty cool buy. The Amiga and Atari Jaguar failing, there was room for something apart from a PC. :)

Killer Instinct Gold is still bad because it is just a port of KI2 when everyone wanted/expected KI1 but it also had dumbed down/3D backgrounds and blurry player sprites. Nintendo should have made the N64 4X-CDROM based or Zip Drive based and gave us faithful home ports of the first two games for 49.99 and not just a compromised port of KI2 for 79.99 like they did.

There is a lot misinformation around this subject.
    This is how it was:
Yes, "Ultra 64 Arcade Board" was not Nintendo 64.
However, this is mostly due that Silicon Graphics didn't have GPU chip ready at the time.
There is Arcade board called Alec, and that board is N64.
Cruis'n USA Arcade board was 32Bit with 50Mhz CPU and additional 10Mhz core for sound. The game itself was 14MB.
Cruis'n World had exact same Arcade board, so these games completedly lacked N64 GPU 3DFX -effects.
Cruis'n USA (8MB) was a bad port on N64, but footage shown here is certainly not actual Arcade pixelated medium resolution -cabinet footage that i played back in the day.
Cruis'n World looks actually better on N64 (12MB) than on Arcade (44MB). Not only does it utilize GPU for accelrated visuals, but also pop -up has been replaced by fade -in that is much nicer to the eyes.
As for Killer Instinct, the Arcade Cabinet Board is 64Bit with 100Mhz CPU.
While it lacks GPU, at least it was aimed to match Nintendo 64 specs, unlike underpowered Cruis'n boards.
At the end of the day, Nintendo 64 certainly has far better looking games than Cruis'n USA Arcade.
Could N64 run the port of actual Arcade -version of first Killer Instinct?
Well, someone would need to build 128MB cartridge for it and rewrite the game.
Sounds like impossible, but KI2 Arcade toke 410MB, still N64 port that was only 12MB got really close.
With a proper compression techniques 64MB port of first Killer Instinct including FMV should be possible.

With the exception of the NES, and slightly less, the SNES, Nintendo just hasn't been able to get it right. The N64 was utter garbage, the Gamecube wasn't much better, Wii was a gimmick and a joke, WiiU was a disaster, and the Switch, regardless of how many units have sold, is a pretty pathetic, little machine. I, honestly, don't understand how Nintendo is still around after making so many blunders.
And, yes, this is on-topic. The issue with Nintendo has always been about them selling inferior hardware to consumers, which, back then, meant: no decent arcade ports due to Nintendo being cheapskates on the hardware. They have always deserved to be in last place, imo.
