    Very late to comment (just found this via one of your other videos), but have to say that I really appreciate this. I shared pretty much all of these thoughts after playing EW. Just left me feeling... heartbroken, I suppose, that I didn't love and maybe even felt disappointed with the conclusion to a story I'd loved so dearly for so long. In any case, even all this time later, it's comforting just to hear that I wasn't alone in that and to hear some of these things put into words. Glad to have caught your message through the aether :)

    While I can agree on a number of things you said, particularly the literal end of the world feeling extremely underwhelming, I feel inclined to disagree with you on the Amon point, since I actually did feel like that made Fandaniel more interesting than just an over-the-top antagonist. The idea that one of the Ascians had no interest in the plans of the Unsundered and actually did care about the life they had before being elevated was pretty interesting. But I do wish a bit more focus was given to that idea.
    Also, it was Papalymo that struck down Ilberd's ghost.

    This video is criminally underrated. Endwalker was a bad expansion even for a huge lore nerd like myself whom has seem the same sloppy storytelling in many books and other pieces of media. It's a shame because I genuinely wanted to like this expansion but the more I dug into it the more I felt it wasn't well thought out.

    a lot of people didn't like it, feel like it was RUSHED, your not the only one, personally, they lead up to this EPIC battle between two 'gods' that ended up being meaningless, millions of lives just snuffed out for nothing 0.0 i am enjoying the after story, because i loved the void since starting black mage (i know many don't like it, but that's just me :3) i believe this is due to the writing team working on both FF14 and FF16. They are starting fresh with dawn trail, i am keeping hope it will get better. YES!!!! The world should be in crumbles, fires, I expected the main cities to be in RUINS!!! they all look perfectly fine, not a single npc died! if you go to ul'dah, people are still alive with no changes in dialog. There is a fan theory that the warrior of light will die and Zero will become the main character an make a new party (with tarutaru and Estinien), from the trailer we watched, we know this won't happen. To be honest, i wish it did. Retire all the characters and start fresh.

    I know this is coming in late, but I agree with most of the points you made. I think Garlemald was easily the best part of the expansion, and I really enjoyed it, along with Elpis, but that doesn't mean they make up for the other things that didn't sit right with me. Thanks for your overview.

    It's ok if you didn't like it. This expansion was very reinforced by the idea that life is suffering and ends in death but is still beautiful. That's why I thought it was brilliant that Meteoin and Zenos were the last fights as they fully encapsulate that ideal. The moments of reprieve from the looming end sprinkled throughout the expansion and the interpersonal moments were necessary to drive this idea.
    I don't think your criticism is unfair or disingenuous and I hope the community doesn't bash you for your takes. It wasn't a perfect expansion even if I think it was a really great ending. I think time and analysis will be kind to Endwalker and i'm excited to see the rest of the patches.

    You seem to have misunderstood something fundamental :P The story was about hydaelyn and zodiark, and why they existed, why the world got sundered and why the threat of the final days loom, but the final days wasnt the main focus imo, and never really seemed to have been intended to.
    We largerly stop it before it becomes a real problem, and if you paid attention in thavnair, had the final days reached more than just an isolated island nation it would've been chaos and destruction on the level of the calamity, not something that sets itself up well for a 6.0 wrap up. So as such, we largerly prevent it before it really blooms, with just small vestiges of corruption outside of thavnair and corvos/garlemald.
    I listened to abit more of the rambling, but honestly, because you mainly ramble on and on its hard to give weight to any real discussion.
    What I will say is that EW in a vacuum is a horrible expansion that barely makes sense, but as a finale to all the other stories and expansions? It delivers and it delivers well, it ties things together so well in fact that it even made me enjoy events of ARR and Stormblood I previously felt were out of place or contrived storylines, and it put even more weight behind Shadowbringers than it already had.
    Furthermore, the whole zone of Ultima Thule and the MSQ there really just feel like a send off from the devs to us, and while abit jarring in a way, the way they did it, especially the "bit" part, was very on point for me.
    It also seems like we can probably maybe get some actual new zones from patch content this xpac, not just stuff like Bozja/Eureka.
    I think EW requires the right mindset, and premise, and I think alot of players expected it to be alot worse than it turned out being. For me it tops all other expansions, because it really helped to make characters feel real and human in a way that ShB started, but never went all the way with.
    I like that at roads end the Ancients gets to be more human and less mystery, but seeing Elpis which is barely anything of their civilization isnt really something that takes away from their mystique.
    Anyhow, for me EW ranks at the top, but its position there is entirely resting on all that came before it, and as one cutscene said "It's the little things that make life worth living, dont you think?". Same with EW, it isnt the major story plots or the overbearing stuff, its the small details and homages to our jurney thus far that makes it great, and it ends on a fantastic finish. Our journey isnt over, but the Ancients/hydaelyn/zodiark are. And honestly its good they finished that story arc, it was very tropey and they've learnt to write very nuanced villains and stories over the years, I fully expect FFXIVs greatest to be what comes next.

      My issue is that Shadowbringers already covered where Zodiark and Hydaelin came from and why the world was sundered in a way that didn't require further explanation. For me, the further explanation weakened an already solid explanation mainly in the storyTELLING being weak.
      I also recognize that the final days weren't the main focus, but I'm saying that to me that was a problem because it lowered the stakes to a point where I never felt like there was really ANY danger. When all of your marketing is about the final days and the moon but both of them end up being almost non-factors it feels like a bait and switch, especially when we get instead is (as I said) essentially a rehash with some retconning thrown in.

      @@overnightsiren despite knowing both zodiark and hydaelyn were primals and the fact that the world was sundered, there were SO many questions unanswered. We didn't know why Hydealyn sundered the star nor what the cause was of the final days, which are VERY IMPORTANT QUESTIONS that had to be answered.
      There's a bigger picture to be had. The theme is nihilism and the meaning of life, it's philosophical, not uwu moon and uwu final days. Marketing it other than what they did would be spoiler territory.

    The passionate protectors are doing their best to drown out these dissenting opinions, but the reality is that this is probably much more common than they'd like, and this video is possibly just the beginning. I've had a chat with another beta 2.0 player and we agreed that Endwalker felt rushed in a lot of ways, and you're echoing some of our own thoughts. That, in addition to some of the retconning, gave it the feeling that they just wanted to finish this arc & get it over with. I get it that 2010 was a long time ago, but like I told the other fellow I couldn't shake the vibe that something more happened at the company behind the scenes and we're never going to hear about it. I'm a 1.0 player myself, for whatever it's worth.
    This didn't feel like a closing song to the players, it felt like a "Let's close this arc already". Not bad writing at all, in my opinion, it was more like... hmm.. maybe bad direction? I can't quite place my finger on it. And on a personal note, the lack of any scenes or even a single dialogue bubble for meteor survivors in the final arc was a little disappointing. Genuinely not a huge deal, to be clear, but it was another straw on the pile of this vibe that Endwalker gave me.
    That said, the environments and the music are just off the charts. I immediately fell in love with Old Sharlayan and Radz-at-Han, spending innumerable hours enjoying the sights and the music, and I've enjoyed the majority of the outside locations, the dungeons' aesthetics, and the mechanics of the boss fights / trials.

    • @LittleSparklingStars
      @LittleSparklingStars 2 роки тому +1

      I think you're wrong about 'let's close this arc already', they had this roadmap for 10 years. That's why answers has the lyrics it has and that song is 10 years old. It only made sense right now. They literally couldn't drag this out any longer than they did.

    • @FrazzleCat
      @FrazzleCat 2 роки тому +3

      @@LittleSparklingStars No, unfortunately they didn't have this prelanned for 10 years. YoshiP himself has said multiple times that they begin to plan out the story and expansions about one expansion ahead. In addition to that, they absolutely rushed into 2.0 and didn't have much of a story at that point, let alone some kind of 10 year plan. That was all about getting a product out the door with actual MMO mechanics, and even then we still had to /shout LFG for awhile just to get a group for Satasha or anything else.
      The music from that time reflects the mood of the team from that time. Torn From The Heavens was Soken's way of expressing that even though the situation seemed dire, he still had the feeling of "We can do this!".
      Answers, although an Uematsu title, is the same thing. The lyrics were written by Sato and Koji. The only concept of the story that they had back then was about the beast tribes summoning primals and the Empire was a problem for everyone. The ascians, or "paragons", showed up at some point, but they were much different from how you know them. They were terrifying reaper-like entities; the Ascian Prime model is essentially what they used to look like.
      While it's kind of fun to think that they had this grand story planned out for some 10 years, that's simply not the case.

    • @LittleSparklingStars
      @LittleSparklingStars 2 роки тому +1

      @@FrazzleCat that's actually only true for the expansion itself, NOT the story.
      The blueprint for the storyarc has already been made 10 years ago, that's why answers made no sense back then but now it does. We knew Hydaelyn was singing but nobody knew what she meant. Neither with "hear, feel, think".
      The same goes for the mention of the sundering back in heavensward and the vision of the final days in a realm reborn. If they write the story one expansion ahead, then why is there mention of stuff that only comes to light in shadowbringers back in heavensward? The warriors of darkness were characters from heavensward, yet according to you they were only writing for stormblood at that point in time.
      That's because again, there was a roadmap for the story made very early on. Stuff like dialogue, story details and storyboarding are done along the previous expansion.
      The reason why ffxiv is called ffxiv is because of the sundered star of 14 shards. When you make the game you have to pitch the grand story to your company. So I believe the sundered star and hydaelyn and zodiark being primals made by unsundered beings was already pitched back then. A lot of game story writers actually also start with writing the end rather than the beginning as well. Also that roadmap might've been made before 1.0 and not during the making of 2.0. The calamity was probably something added in there because of how much of a shitshow 1.0 was.

    • @minticore
      @minticore 2 роки тому +2

      @@LittleSparklingStars Another is right. Yoshi P stated even during FanFest that they did not know where the Hydaelyn/ Zodiark arc was going before writing ShB (maybe even earlier TBH, I just forget)
      I feel like you may have a misunderstanding of how pitching a concept works in the industry. Especially with something like this if you consider 1.0 and how quickly it died. For all we know, according to you they had the whole story line planned but then we all know what happened to it... With games like this they don't even know if they will have a player base for the next expansion. I remember when my server was a ghost town.
      Anyway, you are allowed to have love for something and also be critical of it. I don't think it is unreasonable for a person to want something better out of a game/ team they love and to see it thrive. I'm not saying you are saying you can't be critical, it just seems like people are really determined to act like ffxiv has no flaws and is immune to criticism.

    • @LittleSparklingStars
      @LittleSparklingStars 2 роки тому

      @@minticore There was literally no criticism, do you even know what criticism is? They weren't saying this or that could be better by saying they only wrote the story for endwalker during shadowbringers. We were arguing what was true and what's not true. I find it quite offensive you're labeling me like those FFXIV andies who can't take criticism of the game, I'm just here to give perspective and argue about what's true and what isn't.
      What I meant by roadmap is a rough outline of what the grand storyarc is about. Like a summary that is very rough around the edges. The thing about the sundered star was known during heavensward, that's a hard fact. So there's no way the concept of the sundering was only written during stormblood. What YoshiP meant was probably the details of the story or how it would conclude and flow into the next arc. But the concept of 14 shards was already a thing a very long time ago.
      Perhaps they slapped on a meaning of life thing in there too, who knows. Because let's be real, answers made no sense back in the day. It is possible it was reversed and wanted to make answers make more sense for endwalkers, that's why they uploaded the trailer of arr again right before EW launched. But it's also possible they slapped "answering the meaning of life" as well in their story summary of 10 years ago.
      Idk if you ever did game design before, but roadmaps are quite important in this industry. They have planned 5 years of content ahead for ffxiv as of endwalkers, possibly with also a rough story outline for what's to come.

    I agree with everything.. I have been looking and waiting for what this expac's "wow factor" is in comparison to the previous.. Even the raiding tier that came out today feels uninspiring/inconsequential.. nothing done in Elpis matters, so i dont get why we are not unlocking the present day equivalent of that raid tier -_- The whole meteon and Elpis thing.. she got the "Sylvanas redemption" arc.. Even after letting all the cheesy "power of friendship" anime stuff slide, we are to continue playing pretending a universe-wide threat that "allegedly" killed thousands of worlds/stars and their populations is perfectly averted after showing her a "meaningful flower" and is now flying around the main cities like the final days didnt happen. Im moving forward looking at it like this.. this arc is over, thank god cause for this ending they could have drawn it out for 2 more expacs. I want to believe they did this rushed on purpose so anything else is guaranteed to be "highhger, oh higher"

    • @LittleSparklingStars
      @LittleSparklingStars 2 роки тому +1

      did you only watch the voiced cutscenes? Meteion wasn't a single unit, first of all, and she didn't kill any of the other worlds. She's an entelechy, a highly empathic being that communicates through dynamis, a power channeled through emotion. She was tasked by hermes to ask other intelligent beings the meaning of life, yet everywhere in the universe they went, there was despair and apathy. The meteia were the villain but they weren't inherently evil, they thought that salvation lies in not existing and we as the WoL and the scions showed her otherwise, commicating hope through dynamis. So there was no redemption, that single meteion even said herself she couldn't be redeemed, but she wanted to sing a song of hope until the end of her days.
      And with Elpis, pandaemonium was an ancient thing, if we let pandaemonium be it could cause a ripple effect and destroy current day etheirys.

      The only Thavnir chatacters are the Satrap (who dies), Vrtra and the one matanga woman who first teaches you about akhasha. None of them hold the weight of past side characters, with Vrtra being the only possible exception.
      I'm not sure how you could have gotten the impression that I skipped anything when everything I said was really detailed and referential, but I think that's probably all you could think to say because you couldn't understand how it's even possible that someone would disagree with you 🤷‍♀️

      @@overnightsiren Hydaelyn also dies (her soul doesn't even return to the aetherial sea) and she's been an important character since a realm reborn. I can agree she wasn't a main character in other expacs as she's kinda been there as a diety, but in the expac itself she was a very major character. There doesn't need to be a dead scion every expac for it to be good imo. As meteion said, death isn't as meaningful as not being born. In ffxiv, it's confirmed your soul returns to the aetherial sea, gets cleansed and then you're reborn. Death isn't the end.
