Hey guys, thanks for joining me on my brief fasting journey! Really keen to hear what you guys thought was most interesting.
One thing I should point out is that I have done many fasts over the years, so my body is adapted to it in more ways than one. While honestly I think getting as much low-intensity exercise as possible is the best thing *for me* on a fast, don't push yourself too hard. When you're just getting into fasting, it's hard to tell what will give you more energy and what will drain it. Also, I don't recommend runs or sauna like I did here - those were the two times when I started to actually feel bad.

Man. I really love what you're doing with these experiments. Bro. PLEASE contact "Cole Robinson (snake diet channel). He's a wizard at this fasting stuff and has done a lot of experiments just like what you're doing. His channel is hilarious now because all he does is yell at the camera like a drill Sargent-- but he's a cool guy and I've seen him do a lot of interviews with people and talk about Fasting. You should absolutely do an interview with him and pick his brain. He discovered that you can keep your energy up while fasting as long as you keep a high salt intake going. (which is what "snake juice" is; it's just salt water with potassium in it" -- Please interview the guy-- you two would hit it off because you're both very scientifically minded and learn from experimenting; and he can go deep with the science with you too. It would be such an awesome talk about fasting.

It's actually pretty hard to fast not because of the hunger but because of the people. At work I probably get asked 5 times a day if I want to order something or walk to the kebap store around the corner. It becomes pretty disturbing when you realize how much revolves about eating in your social circle.

I started fasting for a full 24 hours twice per week about 4 months ago and it's been pretty great. I've lost weight, gained energy, and it's really nice to not feel so desperately attached to food. Snacking isn't something I do anymore because I just don't get hungry after I eat my main meal for the day. Low carb and fasting have got to be one of the most beneficial things I've ever done for my body! Great video!

Great advice. Movement, cold exposure and staying busy are indeed crucial. My own experience is that regular 24 hour fasts (or OMAD) work much better to preserve lean muscle tissue, especially when combined with weight training. I just have a low-carb high-protein ~800 cal breakfast, do a low-volume but heavy gym session (signal to the body to preserve muscle) and go for an easy hike or a walk in nature. Fat melts, muscle stays, skin improves, mood improves.

I did a six day fast. Yes staying active is important and I was skiing every day. No sugar, no salt. Just water. I also ran, weight trained and did my usual cold shower and sauna routine. My vision improved to the point i no longer needed glasses. My blood pressure went down significantly. I also lost 17 lbs. Which stayed off.
My experience compared to what I just watched. I think that the trade off between the comfort of eating a little also hampered the total effectiveness of the fast. His benefits were surely worth while but not life changing like mine.
I suggest you plan out your fasting in advance. Eat clean food before you stop eating for a few days . And understand that this is a mental battle nothing else. Hunger, headache, cold sweats are all your mind telling you to eat. But 3-5 days is not going to kill you

Fasting 5 days was not easy for me. I did it mostly to lose stubborn fats. I had a slight manboobs for as long as I remember and I thought was a case of gyno. But no glandular tissue, so I figure I'll try prolonged fasting to see if my body will eat it up. And the body definitely did. I shed much of it, and even out of fasting, it is much gone now.
From many in youtube, the hunger should disappear by day 3, but not for me, it was there almost everyday, which made falling asleep more difficult. Day 4, and especially 5 was particularly difficult for me.. I just felt shitty ( lightheaded, what felt like low blood pressure ), and I had to slow down my workout, took more electrolytes/salt during those days.
I will try it again in the future, as I feel like I might've went into the fast a bit unprepared. The result is undeniable though.

Low intensity cardio is key for fasting as that uses up the remaining carbs in the blood stream and switches you over faster to “storage”-metabolism instead of “food”-metabolism so you aren’t as hungry in the first few days

How do you do your fasts? Do you still work while fasting or are you on vacation?
I personally finished a 10 day fast just now, only water, tee and two cups of vegetable juice per day.

But I was off work for the whole time, that helped tremendously.

I tried fasting while working there once, and I got really light-headed. I'm sure it would totally depend on the type of work one does. When I was teaching, it was much more doable.
That's great that you did 10 days! I really hope I can manage the same this time. If I am too weak, I'm going to restart another fast immediately after the first one.

7:48 Just wanted to point something out here. As incredible as this looks, you have to remember water can't reach temperatures below zero unless it has a solvent in it, like salt, which makes it freeze at a slightly lower -2°. No matter how cold the lake is, when you dive a few metres down, you're gonna hit temperatures of up to 4° because that's the point at which water is the densest. This is still incredibly impressive as outside the water it's still -55°. I just thought I'd point this out

Impressive results for a 5 day fast, and 79 miles of walking all the exercise and cold therapy was a big help. My question is after returning to your normal diet, how much of the good changes did you retain after a few weeks. I don’t think it’s practical for most people to do a 5 day fast. It would be useful to know how beneficial a 2 or 3 day fast twice a month would be. How about repeating the experiment by doing a month of time restricted eating say 6 hours a day from 1:00 to 7:00pm, or one meal a day.

Can confirm, walking around outside helps a lot with (even intermittent) fasting. I've done that consistently since this summer and being active just keeps you distracted enough, whereas sitting at home will give you plenty of opportunities to think about and crave food. In fact, the only time my diet came to a halt was in October when I wasn't out as much as before or after. But there's also another component and that is how your brain stores habits with environments. What makes snacking so difficult to avoid is that just sitting on your couch (or whatever environment you trained your brain to associate with snacking) will trigger the craving, because it's actually triggering a habit and not hunger. Keep that in mind. Being outside and fasting is so much easier even despite all the food options outside! You simply don't crave them.

I did 5 day fast supplementing with bulletproof coffee and electrolytes to make it easier (thanks to tips from Dave Asprey). It worked great. Zero protein and carbs during fasting work well for autophagy, and the fat and the electrolyte lowers the stress to the body. I suppose if you are fasting for fat loss and not autophagy the intake of small amount of protein makes sense.
