Thanks for the shoutout, Maker! It's interesting that you mention an obsession with polygons. I have an authentic, autistic fixation with hexagons in particular; although to a degree it had a rational basis, because I first started using them as sectors, (essentially circuit boards, in a way) when playing Factorio. They are particularly good for sectors where you are using flying drones, due to the fact that the distance between the centers of any two adjacent hexagons is the same. I suspect that the reason why bees started using them wasn't purely because of wax melting into that shape naturally when exposed to heat, but that again, the centroid equidistance means that they could always expend the same amount of movement energy going between cells.
They do have some downsides, though.
a} They only really tile from a smaller size to a larger, not the opposite. You can make a large hex out of a lot of smaller hexes, but you can't easily make a large hex back into smaller ones, because of the shape of the edges; you will end up with gaps.
b} Although it's true that they are the cheapest way to enclose a given space, if the space you are enclosing is large, and you're making one big hex rather than a lot of small ones, then your up front material cost is correspondingly very large as well.
c} They don't work as a shape for flying vehicles where you need a lot of maneuverability, because they are so perfectly counterbalanced, which means no leverage. The flip side is that they can still work very well in Space Engineers for cargo ships, because that balance helps there; but not for warships, as mentioned.

You sound like you belong in my Discord. A few hexagon enthusiasts in there. Xtrafresh has the best hex factories I’ve seen and he’s super active. He’s in there too.
Space Engineers looks like a really great game. But too complicated for what I’m looking for in a game. Also, did not know that about the wax melting naturally into hexagons. Interesting.

@@makergaming2022 Yes, SE is pretty complex. But then again, it's simpler still than Stationeers, which I won't go near either, so I know how you feel. I never really stuck with Satisfactory because at the time, I couldn't really figure out how to build hex factories, but maybe I should give it another look.

This is a video I watched and found helpful for building in the game Satisfactory.
