Ive just demo’d this racquet, I just played the best tennis ever. My margins were getting smaller and smaller and was becoming so much fun, I was putting the balls in corners and was slicing the backhand consistently low and making my opponent make so many errors. Ive got no choice but to buy a pair of these babies. Cant wait to compete now in 2020.
A bit more control with this one, and slightly more power from the Gravity Pro. Spin, and comfort is pretty similar between the two. Gravity Tour offers a bit easier power than the other two, but is pretty close for spin, and comfort. Troy, TW
Tennis Warehouse Troy, I sent an email to tennis warehouse hoping it would get to you. It was basically asking for more details on how you made the racquet tip light (method and grams). I am really considering getting this racquet but I play with tip light racquets. My current racquet is Wilson clash tour which is great but I don’t like that sometimes it’s power is totally unpredictable. Thank you so much!
Another great review guys. You guys are the best tennis equipment reviews for sure. P.S. Great slice backhand dropshot by Troy. That thing's got wicked wicked back spin! Wish I could do the same.
Thanks for the feedback! If you ever get a chance to hit off of a ball machine or have partner feed for you, set up a cone as a target, and keep chipping the backhands with a lot of slice, until you get consistent hitting the target. From there you can work on imparting more and more backspin. Good luck! Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse Thanks for the tip Troy. I practice just about every shot in tennis, except the slice lol. I will try your suggestion about targeting the slice and then working on the backspin. Thanks!
I am currently using Head Gravity Pro. I wonder how is the blade V7 compared with that, as well as the upcoming Yonex Vcore Pro 97 and Babolat Pure Strike 98. They all seems similar to me!
This Blade 98 18x20 is a bit more precise, but the Gravity Pro has a bit bigger sweet-spot. Spin, and power is pretty similar. Also the Gravity Pro is a bit heftier overall. You will have to stay tuned for our reviews of the VCORE Pro 97, and Pure Strikes, we are still hitting them. Troy, TW
Very nice review. Thanks a lot for that. I'm thinking between tourna big hitter black 7 and solinco tour bite on this racket or is there a better recommendation? thank you for ur answer
Hi TW, amazing review btw I just wanted to ask between Wilson Blade 98 18x20 (v7) and wilson six-one team 95 18x20 which better for a player with all-court player who prefers low weight racquet with solid control, stability and Manoeuvrability
It sounds like the Six One Team might be the better choice for that type of player, looking for that low weight. The Blade 98 18x20 v7 isn't that much heavier overall, but it does have a pretty high swingweight, which makes it feel fairly hefty. Troy, TW
I'm giving the slight edge to this Blade 98, mostly because I have used many versions of the Blade 98 in the past, and it feels very natural to me. That said I almost like the feel of the Gravity Pro a bit more, and I think it is just a matter of me getting used to a 100 sq. inch, rounder head shape. I have never switched to a 100 sq. inch headsize, and have used a 95 to 98 for many years. Troy, TW
Hey @tenniswarehouse, can you let us know how Troy "doctors" up the racquet? He goes to 12 ounces by adding weight to the handle but is that strung or unstrung weight? Also, is that just with lead / leather grips? Or shrink sleeve? Thanks!
Our playtest racquets were in 4 1/4" grip size, so I used a Heat Shrink Sleeve to build up the grip one size, and it also adds quite a bit of weight to the handle. Initially with the shrink sleeve, and the racquet strung (overgrip & dampener), it was weighing in at 12.1 ounces. After a few sessions, I decided to try it with a leather grip, and that increased the total weight to 12.4 ounces. A lot of tail-weight, but it feels good to me, and the swingweight was already pretty high (337 on my sample), so I didn't feel the need to add any head weight. Troy, TW
Hey TW! Thanks for the review, as always! Quick question: I know strings are ultimately personal preference but for someone who may not have the luxury of trying out a bunch, which setup would you say suits this frame more? Full bed of poly or gut/poly hybrid?
We pretty much all play with full poly in our racquets, just because that is what we have become used to, and for the consistent control, and spin. That said, I have tried a gut/poly hybrid, and the feel is very nice, and the gut will maintain play-ability longer, but we also noticed that the hybrid needs to be strung tighter, to help maintain the control. So as a team, we would go full poly, but the gut/poly hybrid does offer great, feel, comfort, and some added power. Troy, TW
I play this 18x20 Blade V7 with VS Tonic Gut Mains and Tecnifibre Ice Code 16 Crosses, both at 25kg, no dampener. It has great feel, power, and control. Not a cheap setup but very good durability and holds tension.
Troy, please tell me how your choice would be without having to tune. I thought the stiffness was higher than 60 or is this information correct. thank you for your honest answer Weight swingweight balance ra Schläger 1 : 308,4 304 32,25 60 Schläger 2 : 309,8 301 32 61 61 Schläger 3 : 309,0 314 32,85 60 Schläger 4 : 308,2 302 32,25 61 Schläger 5 : 307,7 304 32,25 60 Schläger 6 : 307,4 295 31,85 60
I am most particular to swingweight, or I would say that it is usually the primary spec that I look at when sorting through racquets. If I had to pick one of the racquets out of those six, I would likely go with option #4, having the 302 swingweight. Usually the polys strings that I play with add about 30 points to the swingweight when strung, so it would likely be close to ~332 strung. If I had to pick a pair, then it would likely be #2 & #4, or maybe #1 & #5. If I was planning on using a thinner string like a 1.20mm poly, then I might go with #1/#5 as the thinner string might weigh a little less, and get the swingweight close to where I like it. So those are my preferred choices, however some players prefer a different swingweight and overall specs, for instance some might be intrigued by #6 with that 295 unstrung swingweight, as some players find the Blade 98 to feel a bit hefty or cumbersome, that would definitely help with a faster feel. I would likely stay away from #3 with that high 314 swingweight, because when strung it would be somewhere close to 344 with most 1.25 polys, but then again some players like that. Also, for the stiffness we found our samples to have a 62 rating when strung, but these might be slightly lower, or the machine might be reading slightly different. Hard to say for sure, but should definitely feel pretty comfortable! Hope that helps. Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse Thank you for the always competent answers. it is very fortunate for tenniswarehouse to have you as a member of staff....great job, Troy
hey guys :) I am currently playing with the gravity pro and love the feel of this racket. however, especially when playing doubles I have troubles with the maneuverability of the pro. Between the Blade, Pure Strike and the Vcore Pro HD - which one comes close to the Gravity Pro in terms of feel but is a little more maneuverable? Thanks
I know it may seem a little odd because it is technically the heaviest of the bunch, but the VCORE Pro 97HD feels slightly more maneuverable than those other racquets. It also has a ton of feel, right up there with the Gravity Pro. The Strike 98, and Blade 98 both feel a bit more cumbersome, likely due to the balance/swingweight combo. The other thing that I might consider, which is something that a lot of consumers don't consider, or even realize, is the subject of quality control in racquet mass production. I'm not certain what the exact swingweight of your Gravity Pro is, but sometimes the specs will fluctuate quite a bit. When purchasing a racquet from us, we can have one of our racquet technicians measure specs from a given batch (for a fee), and pick out the one that has lowest swingweight. This could be useful in helping you find a racquet that feels good, and offers better maneuverability for you. Troy, TW
Tennis Warehouse thanks troy - just compared the balance of my 2 gravity pros. and with same strings and the same overgrip, the balance with one is definitely more head heavy. would need to add about 6g to the butt cap in order to even up the balance... would there be a solution to use this service only for 1 racket at tw europe? It‘s kind of stupid to buy two new Gravitys if I already have bought them 3 months ago thanks, Tobi
@@tobireiter, There is a service option for one racquet, we would just need the unstrung weight, and balance you are looking for, and we could go through stock and look for that spec, before shipping it out. Unfortunately, I do not believe we have this service at Tennis Warehouse Europe, only here in the US. Troy, TW
A bit more control with this one, and slightly more power from the Gravity Pro. Spin, and comfort is pretty similar between the two. Gravity MP offers a bit easier power than the other two, and is more spin friendly, with relatively similar comfort. Troy, TW
Thanks! I like to mix it in every now and then. It feels natural to me, but my wrist/arm gets a bit fatigued after a while, the two-hander is easier to generate depth, and take the ball on the rise. Troy, TW
Thanks for wonderful review. I am looking to get one but hard deciding choosing the right grip size. I have TF40 with size 3, would size 4 in these be similar to TF40 size 3?
We didn't notice significant differences in size, but the shape is a bit different. The Tecnifibre grips are a bit more rectangular, slightly in the way of the old Head pallets. The Wilson is more squared, or symmetrical. Troy, TW
When you get the demos what are they usually strung up with and at what tension. I really like the set up and was curious. The demo I used had black string and was a blade 18x20 v7 btw
When ordering that Blade demo from us, you can select between either a multi or poly for the string option. If it was a multi that you selected (it should list it on the barcode at the throat region of the racquet) then it was likely Prince Premier Control 16. If it was a poly demo then it was likely Wilson Revolve 16 in black. For tension, we would have strung the multi at 57 pounds, and the poly at 53 pounds. We take the mid tension, which is 55 for that racquet, and go plus 2 for a multi, and minus 2 for a poly. Troy, TW
Yes, I could definitely use this in competitive setting, or tournament. The only problem is that I'm not certain that I am an 18x20 pattern guy anymore. I have been using 16x19 for almost a couple years now, and I have become used to the easier lift, or launch angle on my groundies. It would probably take me a solid couple of month of use for my strokes to feel consistently dialed in, with an 18x20. Troy, TW
@@park0211, I really like the added control with the 18x20. I would likely stick with the 18x20 if I were to switch to the Blade 98, I would just tinker with string and gauge, and keep hitting it to dial in my launch angle. Troy, TW
4G feels a bit more firm, and crisp, and offers slightly more control. Hyper-G feels slightly softer, although still on the firm side of the spectrum, and is more spin friendly as it has edges to it that help grip the ball. Both have pretty good tension maintenance, but 4G is the best when it comes to tension maintenance for a co-poly string, but it is also the stiffest. Troy, TW
Our playtest racquets were 4 1/4 (#2) grip size, so I added a heat shrink sleeve. The shrink sleeve that builds up one full grip size, typically adds about 0.6 ounces, or roughly 17 grams. Troy, TW
Hello TW, I was wondering if using tungsten putty is a better method of increasing the static weight than using lead/tungsten tape and heat shrink sleeve.
I used a heat shrink sleeve to build up the grip, since our test racquet was 4 1/4, and we wanted to try a 4 3/8. This also added quite a bit of handle weight, making it about 12 ounces strung. Tungsten Putty would also work inside the handle. Troy, TW
I AGREE 100% BUT I'VE LEARNED FIRST HAND, YOU CAN'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER!! HA HA. HE'S PROBABLY A VERY CRAFTY SMART PLAYER, EVEN THOUGH HIS STROKES ARE MORE LIKE A 3.5 PLAYER AT BEST!! HE NEVER HOLDS ON TO THE RACKET WITH HIS OFF HAND ON HIS ONE HANDER.
I totally get you. But after so many years of experience playing tennis with so many different people, I discovered that you can't really judge a player by their strokes. I've met some players who will contort their bodies in the weirdest ways to hit the ball, yet they're some of the best players I've ever seen.
Thank you for your great review. One question in regards to string and tension. I’m currently using Head Speed Pro Graphene 360 (310g) with leather grip on it and my strings are Alu Power x Babolat Origin 54/54lbs. If I switch my racquet to this Blade v7, what would be your recommendation in terms of tension? FYI, I’m a baseliner. Or what other string combination will work for baseliners with this stick? Thank you in advance!
Question for Troy, you said you added weight to the racquet to make it 12 ounces. What did you use to add weight to the handle to the racquet? and what is the balance of your customised blade?
Wilson sent us 1/4 grips, or grip size 2 for the playtest, so I used a heat shrink sleeve to build up the grip and increase the handle weight. It ended up at about 7.5 points head light (strung). www.tennis-warehouse.com/Heat_Shrink_Sleeve_build_one_grip_size/descpageGAMMA-SLEEV.html. Troy, TW
hi guys, now i’m currently using 2019 Babolat aero pro 16x19..i want to change to 18x20 string pattern..How do you compare my Babolat & Wilson blade or Yonex Vcore 97 HD? thanks in Advance!
Hey TW I currently have the blade 98 18x20 and I really love the performance of the racket and I am just wondering can you put a hybrid set up in the racket using a wilson synthetic gut and a polyester? Can any poly string be good for that setup? Or what strings do you prefer on the racket?
I replied to your previous inquiry, however we preferred a thinner gauge poly, like Hyper-G 17, and since polys are a bit more firm in a full bed compared to a hybrid, we like to lower tension, down to about 50 pounds or so. I actually string the Blade 98 18x20 at about 47 pounds. Troy, TW
A little more precise with this one. The Gravity Pro has a bit bigger sweet-spot. Comfort, and spin is pretty similar between the two, and the Gravity Pro feels a bit more hefty overall. Troy, TW
Sweet-spot size is pretty similar between the two. The open pattern of the 16x19 helps a bit, but so does the added swingweight of the 18x20, so it sort of balances out. Troy, TW
Hey Troy, just wanted to ask if this would be like the kblade tour from back in the day if I put a leather grip and over grip on this blade? I'm trying to recreate the kblade tour and they just don't make rackets similar to those ones anymore. Thanks I'm advance if you get around to answering :)
It is a bit different than the KBlade 98, in that this one is more flexible, and comfortable feeling. From what I recall, that one was stiffer, and a bit more maneuverable in stock form. A leather grip will help make this one more headlight, but doesn't won't lower swingweight. If you don't mind adapting to the lower flex, then for the maneuverability factor, or finding a lower swingweight, you could contact our racquet expert department, and we offer MRT services, where they could go through a batch of racquets and pick out the racquet with the lowest swingweight in that particular batch. If you wanted to get more details on that, here is the contact info: Toll Free: 1.800.799.9230 Email: racquets@tennis-warehouse.com Hours: M-F 6am-5pm PST. Troy, TW
One of the key differences you should notice on the initial hitting, is that the Blade 18x20 v7 swings heftier, higher swingweight and less headlight. The Pro Staff 97 v13 feels more maneuverable, and easier to manipulate the racquet even though it is heavier, due to the more HL balance, and lower swingweight. Besides that, the Blade feels more flexible, and has a bit lower launch angle. The Pro Staff 97 v13 feels a bit more firm, and is a more spin friendly. Both can be used by advanced players, just depends on the feel and preferences of the player. Troy, TW
Hi tennis warehouse I just wanted to ask if you think the spin potential of this is a lot less than the prince tour 95 I'm also how it compares to the Head Extreme Tour, thank you.
When you say Prince Tour 95, do you mean the Textreme Tour 95 (black/green cosmetic), or the old Tour 95 that was yellow/black and had the 18x20 pattern? The Extreme Tour is a bit more maneuverable, and provides slightly easier power, and spin. If you are wanting a bit more spin potential then maybe the Blade 98 16x19 will be the better option. Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse sorry I didn't specify, yes I mean the textreme tour 95 (black and green 16x19). I used it for a few years and then changed to a small brand from the UK called Angell, 95 with a 16x19. I am looking to replace it and was considering the blade but have heard great things about the new extreme tour.
They are pretty close in spin, and launch angle, but I find the 360 Speed Pro to be a bit more spin friendly, and yields a slightly higher launch angle. Troy, TW
I would say that it is right up there. A slightly softer feel here, but still good pop. The predictability is very good with this one, like the 2015, and much better than the CV for responsiveness. Troy, TW
@samer hanna, At this time, the Pro Lab Wilson racquets are exclusively available only on Wilson's website. We wish we could sell them...or even get a chance to playtest them ourselves! Michelle, TW
We really like both versions. I prefer the 18x20 for the all out control, and some added feel. That said, the 16x19 provides easier access to power, and spin, while still possessing good control. Troy, TW
Sure, that is an option. A leather usually adds a couple of points to the HL balance, so maybe three total with the overgrip. You can add more buy opening the trap door and using something like our TW Tungsten putty and some cotton balls to add even more handle weight. Troy, TW
The Gravity Tour is a bit more maneuverable, and makes it a bit easier to generate power. This Blade packs more plow, and is a bit more stable. Both offer a lot of feel, and comfort. Troy, TW
Slightly more power, and a bit easier to maneuver with the 360+ Speed Pro, and the Blade 98 18x20 v7 feels a bit heftier, and has a bit more control, and precision. Both have pretty good comfort, but the Blade 98 18x20 v7 feels slightly softer. Troy, TW
We find power to come a bit easier with the 16x19. The launch angle of the 18x20 is lower than the 16x19. I would say it is noticeable to most. Troy, TW
The 18x20 offers more control, and takes a little more racquet head speed to generate spin. I'm not sure if it will force you to learn better technique, but it offers a lot of control, feel, and rewards a full swing. Troy, TW
my sister plays with babolat pure strike 100 (version 3) racket, wants to switch to wilson blade 98 18 * 20. which of these rackets is the best? should she switch to another racket?
It really depends on what you are seeking in the switch. The Blade 98 18x20, will feel heavier with the overall weight and swingweight, and the 18x20 pattern will be less spin friendly, but more control and feel on flatter strokes. The Blade 98 16x19 will still offer more control, and a bit heavier feel, not quite as much swingweight as the 18x20, and will be a bit easier to generate spin, so could potentially be a bit easier transition from the Strike 100, but then again it just depends on what you are seeking or how much of a change. Troy, TW
This one offers more plow, feel, and is a bit more precise. The 360 Speed Pro is more maneuverable, and provides easier access to power. I would go with this Blade 98, but I also have used older versions in the past, so they feel sort of natural to me. Troy, TW
Launch angle is pretty similar, just a bit lower on this one. Plow through is similar, but a bit better with the Duel G 330, as it is 25 grams heavier overall. Both have a lot of control, and feel. The Duel G offers a bit more response, and feel for me, whereas this Blade feels a bit more dampened. Two great racquets, but a big difference in overall weight. Troy, TW
They are both great options. This one swings a bit heavier, and feels a bit more flexible, whereas the TF40 feels slightly firmer, crisper, and maneuver a bit easier. Both have a lot of control, and feel. Troy, TW
For this one, the mains will end down at the bottom of the head, towards the throat, so in this case for 2 knots, it would be recommended to use an around the world method. 4 knots is good to use as well, basically finding a way to string the crosses from the top of the head, down to the throat. Some prefer 2 knots, possibly for a bit more consistency throughout the frame tension, and less tie-offs might lead to a bit less tension loss. You can pretty much string any racquet with 4 knots. Troy, TW
Hello guys, I am currently using and loving the Rf97, i love it’s stability, plow trough, the feel mainly and the mass. Even though i commit to it, sometimes it tires me and makes me really inconsistent. Somebody recomended the 315g Pro staff Cv, but even being lighter for some reasons that racquets hurts my arm, and i need to pick up th RF so the pain goes away. Would any of you, Troy or Michelle recommend me to switch to this new Blade? Or should I try the Yonex Vcore 330g, considering the big difference in weight between the RF and the blade. Would this blade be to light for me and cause bad form swings? PS: i know that i need to demo ..but that is what happened with the 315 g Pro staff, demoed it loved it...bought 2 and noticed two enitirely different racquets thatn what i demoed....curious if you guys think I should switch to the Blade v7, considering i love the feel and stability of the RF 97. Thanks, looking forward to your response! one handed back hand, attacker. Always looking for depth and power but love control in a racquet!
This Blade will offer a similar level of control, maybe even a bit more with the 18x20 pattern. There is enough swingweight to make it feel solid and stable on contact. It is hard to say for certain if you will like it as much as the RF97A, but it is a very nice racquet, and there should be just as much, if not more comfort compared to the RF97A. If you went with the Blade 98, I might even consider going with a leather grip, or adding some handle weight to get the balance more head light. The VCORE Pro 97 330 is a great racquet as well. It plays a bit more comfortable, and slightly lighter compared to the RF97A, but it is still fairly hefty. Troy, TW
Thank you so much for your spot on answr Troy, just came back from testing the Blade 18x20, and everything you say you so spot on, the racquet feels awesome and solid, enough plow through, I am struglling with my serves though, maybe after adding a leather grip things might be better. Also I will test the 16x19 pattern and compare...If I am not mistaking, the 16x19 has less swingweight, would you prefer the 18x20 for stability and plow trough? Thank you so much for your answer!👌
@@Verlitz , Yes, I prefer the added plow through from the 18x20, although the 16x19 makes a bit easier to generate spin on groundstrokes, and serves. If you get a chance, a demo of the 16x19 is a good idea. I found that after adding weight to the handle of the 18x20, I was swinging it more naturally. Good luck in the search! Troy, TW
To continue the discussion, just came back and playtested the 16x19 Blade v7. So the feel is there, though you can feel the differnce in SW, it is not as stable as the 18x20. It handles nice, but probably coming from the RF97 i feel like the similar racquet would be the 18x20 blade. Even so, I believe this blade could work as a back racquet in case I get to tired, though serves are harder to hit. Regardless the racquet is solid, and after adding a leather gripit feels awesome...i will keep hitting the 18x20 to see if it worths having it. In love with Rf97 for sure. But i noticed a little more POP on hitting with this new racquet and I feel like my Rf97 doesn’t pop that sound anymore. Do they lose this in time? Should I get a new pair? Curious to hear your thoughts on this, thanks
@@Verlitz, I noticed that the Blade 98 18x20 v7 has a nice sound to it when taking a big rip at the ball. I'm not certain if the sound changes much over time, but I know that racquets will start to wear down after a lot of use, sometimes years. The fibers that compose the frame start to break down, and the frame will start to lose some of its pop, or energy return. It is hard to say for certain if that is the case with your RF97A, but maybe...Troy, TW
I added all the weight in the handle on the one I hit with. I used a shrink sleeve to build up from grip size 4 1/4", and then a leather on top of that. Swingweight was already high enough on mine (338). Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse Thanks Troy :) one more question. how is the 16x19 compared to 18x20? and does the strings u recommended above applies the same for 16x19? Cheers
@@bern83, it is a bit more maneuverable, and more spin friendly. We like a variety of polys in these racquets, but Cyclone is likely our favorite for the price, followed by Hyper-G. In the 16x19 pattern we would likely go 17 or 16L (1.25mm) for the gauge. Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse Bought the Blade 16x19 with cyclone 17@55pounds last week and the racket feels much heavier than the Wilson BLX Six one team(2010) that i have been using for ages, especially the swing weight. The strings feels great and clearly more spin than the BLX six one team. However, my forehand becomes more inconsistent but backhand and slice becomes better. Volley seems little tougher too due to slightly tougher maneuverability. Hopefully I'll transit faster to the Blade, the inconsistent forehand frustrates me a lot. Thanks for the strings recommendation :)
How does this compare to the Wilson 97S the first gen 2015 18x17 model? And is it true that racket is more prone to popping strings than normal? Also I tend to hit slightly higher up on the sweet spot, does the strings in the upper hoop still feel comfortable when you hit higher up?
The maneuverability, and overall weight is pretty similar between the two, a bit heavier with the 97S 2015. From what I recall, the 97S felt a bit lower in power, and offered a bit more feel. This Blade 98 18x20 v7 packs a bit more power, and feels a bit lighter. From what I recall, the 18x17 played like a dense pattern, even though it was considered a "spin effect" racquet, so I would think spin is pretty close between the two. I don't remember the 97S breaking strings out of the ordinary, like some of the other spin effect racquets, like the 16x15 patterns. Both racquets feel pretty comfortable, when hitting in the upper part of the stringbed. Troy, TW
Tennis Warehouse thanks so much for replying Troy! I’m worried about the balance of the 97S compared to my setup on my blade 98, on my blade I have total of 4 grams added at 3 and 9 and I use 2 overgrips normally. If I wanted to achieve the same or similar balance to my current setup(blade) with the 97S, what would I have to add or remove? Should I remove the leather grip so the balance would be more head heavy similar to my blade? And could/should I still add lead tape to 3 and 9?
Tennis Warehouse also if I wanted to tail weight the racket, is the best feasible way to just add tungsten putty in trap door with cotton ball? How much grams would you add to the stock frame?
@@jonathanchen1026 --The 2015 Pro Staff 97S is evenly balanced in stock form, so I would likely keep the leather grip on there, or else it will make the racquet head heavy. I would probably start by adding some weight to the handle, and we recommend tungsten putty, with cotton, as you can adjust it, and remove it if you want to. With silicone in the handle, it is pretty much permanent. If you want to add weight the the head of the racquet you could, but I would try it stock first, as it already packs a good amount of plow in stock form. Troy, TW
Tennis Warehouse how much weight should I add to the handle to get it to feel similar to rf97a headlight balance? I use two overgrips and unstrung the racket weighed 310g, with the two overgrips it weighed 318g
Other question for you Guys: in transition from a 2014 speed pro which onde would be more suitable? Blade 18x20, 16x19 or Clash 98 or 100? My main goal is gain a bit power without losing control. @Troy
You might want to consider the new Speed Pro, or Prince Textreme Tour 100P. I think the Clash will lack some feel, but the Clash 98 could be an option. Not sure if the Blades will give you easier power than the older speed pro. I might also consider the Pure Strike 98 18x20. Troy, TW
Tennis Warehouse do you consider the Prince softer and better than blade 98 18x20? Is it more maneuverable? What about the new speed pro, much diferent? I heard from a lot of people that babolat is not easy on arm, have you ever heard of that?
Well first off, it is pretty difficult to gain power without losing control. The Blade 98 18x20 is a good racquet, but not sure if you are going to find added power compared to your older speed pro. The Pure Strike 98 18x20 is a bit more firm than the Blade, as the Blade will offer better comfort, but the Strike will feel a bit more powerful. The Prince Tour 100P is a bit more powerful than Blade 98, and maneuvers a bit easier, as it is more similar to the Speed Pro. Sounds like you need to try some demo racquets, because as I mentioned before, in order to gain power in the racquet, you will usually sacrifice a bit of control, and vice versa. Troy, TW
It is tempting, but I have been on the extended length racquet bandwagon as of late. Primarily hitting the Yonex EZONE 98+. If I go with a standard length racquet, I will likely stay with the VCORE Pro 97 (330), no need for customization and I like the added spin and no loss in control, compared to this Blade. But you never know, I like to experiment with a lot of racquets, and I am planning on re-stringing the weighted-up Blade, and we'll see. Next week I might be on to a new fling =) Troy, TW
If you like the 16x19 string pattern, and spin potential from that, then the Blade 98 16x19 would be the best option. If you want a bit more control, feel, and don't mind a reduction in the overall spin potential, then the Blade 98 18x20 is a great option. Troy, TW
There are a lot of great options available. I would recommend trying some demos. We really enjoy the new Blade v7 racquets, Yonex VCORE Pro, Babolat Pure Strike, Tecnifibre TF40, and Head Gravity racquet lines. Troy, TW
This one packs some added plow, and the higher swingweight helps with easier depth, and put away power. The Ultra Tour maneuvers a bit easier, and offers a slightly more classic feel from the more head light balance, and more boxy beam type. Troy, TW
@John Wick, If you prefer control and are looking for a heftier racquet to swing, go with the 18x20. But if you'd like more free power, try the 16x19! Michelle, TW
Control is very similar, but this one packs a more heft in the head, or the swingweight. The VCORE 95 is maybe just a bit more precise, and slightly more spin friendly, but they both a have a very smooth, plush feel. Troy, TW
We all know about wilson's not-so-good quality control....if I buy a new racket how should the unstrung swing weight and how should the balance be to get a swingweight around 330. Best regards
We could give you a more accurate target spec, if we knew which string and gauge you plan on using. For example, a string like Solinco Hyper-G 16L (1.25mm) will usually add about 30 points to the swingweight when installed in the racquet, so in that case you would likely want to find a frame that has the swingweight close to 300. Troy, TW
I don't think it will be too powerful, as it still offers a good amount of control, however the Blade 98 18x20 will likely be closer to the control of the Six One Team. Troy, TW
Hello tenniswarehouse .. Is there any Wilson racquet that same as Wilson Blade 98 model 2015 ( 18x20 )or can you produce it again ? It was the best racquet I’ve ever had .. soo much different than countervail ... It feels like you holding a hammer 🔨 and swing like a sword 🗡
Yes, a great racquet but unfortunately discontinued. I highly suggest trying a demo of this new Blade v7 18x20, it is definitely different from the Countervail. If you like the 2015, you should really enjoy this update. Troy, TW
@Devin M, The Blade 98 18x20 will be more controlled and precise while the Clash 98 will offer a bit more power and spin. We might be pretty split here...both are solid options! Michelle, TW
To maximize control, and spin, we recommend Luxilon ALU Power Feel, or Solinco Hyper-G 17. For maximum comfort, and power we recommend Wilson NXT Power. For a mix of both, go with Wilson Duo Power. Troy, TW
He was referring to the racquet as an "arrow". Meaning that the downfall on his return of serves was more due himself, like a marksman or person holding the bow, and the racquet as an arrow. I hope that helps to clarify what he meant. Troy, TW
Friends this racquet is perfect. I can vouch this racquet has the smoothest feeling I have ever realised while hitting. The racquet is almost perfect. The racquet however has a lower launch angle and requires full swing to shine. Can TW team guide how I can increase launch angle by tweaking weight here and there. Thanx in advance
The biggest factor is a more open string pattern, so you might want to try a thinner gauge poly, something around 1.15mm, like Tour Bite, Tecnifibre 4S or Hyper-G. As far as weight goes, I would likely try adding some to the handle to give a more headlight feel, hopefully increasing maneuverability. Troy, TW
@Shereef, Depends on who you ask! I personally much prefer the 18x20 -- but the specs are distinctive enough that some of our team prefers the 16x19 while some prefer the 18x20! Michelle, TW
You will likely find the Head Gravity Tour to offer the most similarities. The Head Radical MP 2021 could be another one to consider, but has a 16x19 pattern, and is a bit stiffer as well. Troy, TW
This one packs some added plow, and the higher swingweight helps with easier depth, and put away power. The Ultra Tour maneuvers a bit easier, and offers a slightly more classic feel from the more head light balance, and more boxy beam type. Troy, TW
Love the plow through and accuracy provides, however I noticed some issues with maneuvering volleys/ pick ups. Would tail weighting with putty help this slightly, if so how much would you recommending adding? Thanks a ton!
I enjoyed the how this racquet played after adding some weight to the handle. I would consider adding about 6 to 8 grams, and see how that plays. I added about 15 grams to the handle using a heat shrink sleeve, mostly because we wanted to build up the grip size, and this made the racquet much more head light. Troy, TW
@@ramz8248, 8 grams added to the bottom of the handle will make balance about 2.5 to 3 points more headlight. We have more information on weight added to strategic points on the racquet, and how it effects balance, throughout this article: www.tennis-warehouse.com/LC/customize.html. Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse would adding a leather grip to the correct size handle be the same as what you have done in regards to adding weight to the handle of this 4 1/4
@@cheny8923, A leather grip typically adds about 8-10 grams of weight to the handle, which is about the same as 1/2 grip build up sleeve. The full shrink sleeve build up adds about 17-18 grams to the handle, which is almost double the amount added from the leather grip. Troy, TW
I think the fact that the 18x20 has a bit higher swingweight, makes it play a bit more stable. The 18x20 also pairs well with its slightly modern feel, and pop, unlike some of the more classic racquets where it is almost too much control. That said, if you were to match the swingweight on both racquets then they will play essentially the same, just with a difference in spin/launch angle. Troy, TW
haha, it is a very nice stick. Besides my VCORE Pro 97, I have been hitting primarily with the EZONE 98+ for easier power. I will keep hitting with this and the Tecnifibre TF40, both weighted up, and see what works best. Troy, TW
@@applesforakbar, I'm working hard on it! I have a customized Blade 18x20 v7, as well as a CX200 Tour 18x20, both of which feel great. I have been using the EZONE 98+ as my racquet of choice for a little while now, but all these great control frames that are available right now have me tempted. The VCORE 97HD feels great as well. Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse Awesome! Does it feel weird going back to 18x20 since you've been on the 16x19 train recently? Are there any drawbacks really besides an adjustment to the launch angle?
@@applesforakbar, It feels really good to go back to the 18x20 on specific shots, and I find increased feel for the ball. I really like the 18x20 on slice backhands, flat serves, and on my forehand I can really swing big, and sort of slap at the ball when needed. That said the launch angle is lower, and on the defensive shots, or balls that land deep near my feet, the 18x20 makes it a bit more difficult to get the ball back, and lift it up over the net. Troy, TW

My modifications for this frame: A little bit of lead tape on the tip of the racquet. And leather grip! ;)
Looks like a great racquet. Pro level swingweight in a consumer frame like the blade.
lol @Michelle pushing that guy around like a rag doll at 5:50
can you guys review the wilson blade 100L
Hello tenniswarehouse! How would you compare this racket to the Head gravity pro and tour? Regarding spin, control, power and Comfort?
A bit more control with this one, and slightly more power from the Gravity Pro. Spin, and comfort is pretty similar between the two. Gravity Tour offers a bit easier power than the other two, but is pretty close for spin, and comfort. Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse thanks for answering troy!!
Thanks for the video. Will the CV 18x20 grommet fit this racquet? Or will Wilson come out with a new, specific one?
Thanks!
How do these new blades compare with the new yonex vcore pro’s?
Good question!
If they could just get the static weight to 330g unstrung with a 62 or less ra then they have an h19
We are currently testing the new VCORE Pro racquets, stay tuned for our review! Troy, TW

Those are great choices, the Black 7 offers more comfort, but both offer a lot of control, and spin. Troy, TW
Hi TW, amazing review btw
I just wanted to ask between Wilson Blade 98 18x20 (v7) and wilson six-one team 95 18x20 which better for a player with all-court player who prefers low weight racquet with solid control, stability and Manoeuvrability
It sounds like the Six One Team might be the better choice for that type of player, looking for that low weight. The Blade 98 18x20 v7 isn't that much heavier overall, but it does have a pretty high swingweight, which makes it feel fairly hefty. Troy, TW
Michelle et Troy, which racket do you both prefer, this Blade or Gravity Pro? thin beams, 18x20, 330 swing weight, soft frames...
Troy, TW
@Senator Seth,
I also give the edge to the Blade 98 18x20 -- more swingweight and mass, and I like the feel a bit better.
Michelle, TW
Troy, TW
Will there be a video review for the new serena 104?
Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse Thanks for the detailed response. As usual TW, A-class!
I thought the stiffness was higher than 60 or is this information correct. thank you for your honest answer
Weight swingweight balance ra
Schläger 1 : 308,4 304 32,25 60
Schläger 2 : 309,8 301 32 61 61
Schläger 3 : 309,0 314 32,85 60
Schläger 4 : 308,2 302 32,25 61
Schläger 5 : 307,7 304 32,25 60
Schläger 6 : 307,4 295 31,85 60
Troy, TW

hey guys :) I am currently playing with the gravity pro and love the feel of this racket. however, especially when playing doubles I have troubles with the maneuverability of the pro.
It‘s kind of stupid to buy two new Gravitys if I already have bought them 3 months ago
thanks, Tobi
@@tobireiter, There is a service option for one racquet, we would just need the unstrung weight, and balance you are looking for, and we could go through stock and look for that spec, before shipping it out. Unfortunately, I do not believe we have this service at Tennis Warehouse Europe, only here in the US. Troy, TW
Thanks for the awesome review .how do you compare this with Head Gravity MP or Pro?
A bit more control with this one, and slightly more power from the Gravity Pro. Spin, and comfort is pretty similar between the two. Gravity MP offers a bit easier power than the other two, and is more spin friendly, with relatively similar comfort. Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse which of these three rackets will you recommend to a 3.0-3.5 player? And what other rackets will you recommend to demo?
Going for a one handed backhand now, Troy? Pretty darn good, from the few you're seen hitting in this video.
Thanks! I like to mix it in every now and then. It feels natural to me, but my wrist/arm gets a bit fatigued after a while, the two-hander is easier to generate depth, and take the ball on the rise. Troy, TW

Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse 👌🏾. Thanks a bunch
Solid Review. Is this frame switch worthy Troy?
Yes, I could definitely use this in competitive setting, or tournament. The only problem is that I'm not certain that I am an 18x20 pattern guy anymore. I have been using 16x19 for almost a couple years now, and I have become used to the easier lift, or launch angle on my groundies. It would probably take me a solid couple of month of use for my strokes to feel consistently dialed in, with an 18x20. Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse So would you just use the 16x19 version instead?
@@park0211,
I really like the added control with the 18x20. I would likely stick with the 18x20 if I were to switch to the Blade 98, I would just tinker with string and gauge, and keep hitting it to dial in my launch angle. Troy, TW

Hey! Great video! How does Luxilon 4G plays on the 18x20, comparing to Hyper G on same gauge and tension?
4G feels a bit more firm, and crisp, and offers slightly more control. Hyper-G feels slightly softer, although still on the firm side of the spectrum, and is more spin friendly as it has edges to it that help grip the ball. Both have pretty good tension maintenance, but 4G is the best when it comes to tension maintenance for a co-poly string, but it is also the stiffest. Troy, TW

Hello TW, I was wondering if using tungsten putty is a better method of increasing the static weight than using lead/tungsten tape and heat shrink sleeve.
Tungsten putty is a great option, just use a cotton ball to help fill in the space, and secure the putty against the staples. Troy, TW

I used a heat shrink sleeve to build up the grip, since our test racquet was 4 1/4, and we wanted to try a 4 3/8. This also added quite a bit of handle weight, making it about 12 ounces strung. Tungsten Putty would also work inside the handle. Troy, TW

Troy, TW

Hi tennis warehouse team, how does the 98 v7 18x20 compare to the pro staff 97 v13? And which of the two would you recommend for an advanced player?

I would say that it is right up there. A slightly softer feel here, but still good pop. The predictability is very good with this one, like the 2015, and much better than the CV for responsiveness. Troy, TW
Hi TW, are you going to be selling the Blade Pro , the Wilson Pro Labs one?
@samer hanna,
At this time, the Pro Lab Wilson racquets are exclusively available only on Wilson's website. We wish we could sell them...or even get a chance to playtest them ourselves!
Michelle, TW
Which version is better? The 18x20 or the 16x19 @tenniswarehouse
We really like both versions. I prefer the 18x20 for the all out control, and some added feel. That said, the 16x19 provides easier access to power, and spin, while still possessing good control. Troy, TW
Hi TW,
How will I doctor the weight of this racquet to make it more HL? Will replacing the grip with a leather grip and adding and overgrip help?
Sure, that is an option. A leather usually adds a couple of points to the HL balance, so maybe three total with the overgrip. You can add more buy opening the trap door and using something like our TW Tungsten putty and some cotton balls to add even more handle weight. Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse Thanks Troy. So how much weight in total did you add in grams? And how much HL is the blade 98 after your doctoring?
Hi! Can you compare the gravity tour to the wilson blade 98 (18x20) v7? Thank you!
The Gravity Tour is a bit more maneuverable, and makes it a bit easier to generate power. This Blade packs more plow, and is a bit more stable. Both offer a lot of feel, and comfort. Troy, TW
Hi Tenniswarehouse, how does this racquet compare to head speed 360+ pro 18x20 in terms of power, comfort, control, manoeuvrability
Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse Thanks Troy. That was helpful
Could you please elaborate more on how the lower stiffness rating feels? My only concern is that 62 sounds a little mushy..
There is an increase in flex compared to the CV, but not too flexy or mushy. There is still a nice pop on the ball. Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse Thanks!
Will you say that this racquet is more powerful then the 16x19 pattern? Also, the launch angle is noticeably lower then the 16x19 version?
We find power to come a bit easier with the 16x19. The launch angle of the 18x20 is lower than the 16x19. I would say it is noticeable to most. Troy, TW
Tennis Warehouse Thanks again Troy!
Would this 18x20 pattern force me learn better technique? I can't decide between this or the 16x19 version!
Troy, TW
This vs the new head gravity pro which did the playtesters prefer?
They are both great frames, but I think we have a slight preference for this Blade 98 v7. Troy, TW
When did Troy switch from two to one handed backhand?
I like to mix it in every now and then. Troy, TW
How do you compare this racquet to the 360 speed pro overall? Which one do you prefer Troy?
This one offers more plow, feel, and is a bit more precise. The 360 Speed Pro is more maneuverable, and provides easier access to power. I would go with this Blade 98, but I also have used older versions in the past, so they feel sort of natural to me. Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse Thank you very much!
@Troy ....How does it compare to yonex v core dual g 330 in feel and plow through and launch angle. Thanx
Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse thanx Troy
@Tennis Warehouse so did you like this one or the TF40 more?
They are both great options. This one swings a bit heavier, and feels a bit more flexible, whereas the TF40 feels slightly firmer, crisper, and maneuver a bit easier. Both have a lot of control, and feel. Troy, TW
Which one would be better for shoulder issues?
For this wilson blade is it bad to knot it only 2 times or will it crack? And what are the pros and cons of 2 and 4 knots?
@@Verlitz ,
Yes, I prefer the added plow through from the 18x20, although the 16x19 makes a bit easier to generate spin on groundstrokes, and serves.
@@Verlitz,
I noticed that the Blade 98 18x20 v7 has a nice sound to it when taking a big rip at the ball.
Hi Troy. Where do you suggest to place the 12oz weight and how?, thks!!
I added all the weight in the handle on the one I hit with. I used a shrink sleeve to build up from grip size 4 1/4", and then a leather on top of that. Swingweight was already high enough on mine (338). Troy, TW
This is looking very confusing...So the 16x19 and 18x20 have the same static weight but the sw varies 6 grams!! Seems too off.
more string, 6 grams is nothing
Hi Tennis Warehouse, what strings(good value) do you recommend for the blade 18x20? Cheers
We enjoy playing this one with a co-poly like Volkl Cyclone 17 or 18, strung somewhere around 52 pounds.
Troy, TW
@@tenniswarehouse Thanks for the advise! Stay safe and take care!
Thanks a lot for your reply @Troy
Troy, TW
Tennis Warehouse ok, I will try to demo!! Thanks a lot for your support
@Troy are you jumping back on the Blade Bandwagon ?
It is tempting, but I have been on the extended length racquet bandwagon as of late. Primarily hitting the Yonex EZONE 98+. If I go with a standard length racquet, I will likely stay with the VCORE Pro 97 (330), no need for customization and I like the added spin and no loss in control, compared to this Blade. But you never know, I like to experiment with a lot of racquets, and I am planning on re-stringing the weighted-up Blade, and we'll see. Next week I might be on to a new fling =) Troy, TW
I’m trying to switch from my 2016 pro staff which model of the blade would you recommend
If you like the 16x19 string pattern, and spin potential from that, then the Blade 98 16x19 would be the best option. If you want a bit more control, feel, and don't mind a reduction in the overall spin potential, then the Blade 98 18x20 is a great option. Troy, TW
I’m looking to switch from the pro staff 97 2016 what rackets would be good for me to switch to?
There are a lot of great options available. I would recommend trying some demos. We really enjoy the new Blade v7 racquets, Yonex VCORE Pro, Babolat Pure Strike, Tecnifibre TF40, and Head Gravity racquet lines. Troy, TW
Hey tenniswarehouse how would you compare this racket to the wilson ultra tour?
This one packs some added plow, and the higher swingweight helps with easier depth, and put away power. The Ultra Tour maneuvers a bit easier, and offers a slightly more classic feel from the more head light balance, and more boxy beam type. Troy, TW
Which racket is better Wilson Blade 98 18/20 or 16/19?
@John Wick,
If you prefer control and are looking for a heftier racquet to swing, go with the 18x20. But if you'd like more free power, try the 16x19!

How would you compare this racket to the yonex vcore 95???
Control is very similar, but this one packs a more heft in the head, or the swingweight. The VCORE 95 is maybe just a bit more precise, and slightly more spin friendly, but they both a have a very smooth, plush feel. Troy, TW
Tennis Warehouse thanks troy ,,, and the launch angle??
@@christopherleiva224, I found them both to be slightly low on the launch angle, I would say they are relatively close in that aspect.

Coming from a six one team (18x20) will I feel less control with the blade 16x19? will it feel too powerful?
I don't think it will be too powerful, as it still offers a good amount of control, however the Blade 98 18x20 will likely be closer to the control of the Six One Team. Troy, TW
Hello tenniswarehouse .. Is there any Wilson racquet that same as Wilson Blade 98 model 2015 ( 18x20 )or can you produce it again ? It was the best racquet I’ve ever had .. soo much different than countervail ... It feels like you holding a hammer 🔨 and swing like a sword 🗡

How does this one compare to the 2015 version?
A bit softer feel, and the ball seems to dwell on the strings a bit longer on contact with this one, maybe its the Free Flex tech. Troy, TW

@@tenniswarehouse excellent thank you, might have to invest for a proper compare ;)
Did Mark just refer to the racket as Aero?? Caught that little slip up @1:27
He was referring to the racquet as an "arrow".

The biggest factor is a more open string pattern, so you might want to try a thinner gauge poly, something around 1.15mm, like Tour Bite, Tecnifibre 4S or Hyper-G.
