    Thank you 😊 my grading is tomorrow and I was really worried about but I've watched some of sensei ubls videos and now feel much better 5kyu/ purple belt here I come

    its a strike not a "block" thats why the hand moves around the neck youre priming it to strike your opponents neck as you deflect the attack while the hand that goes out first grabs the attackers arm and pulls it in "receives" thats the purpose of hikite, you have a limb and youre pulling the opponent towards you as you strike him in the neck. Its defense to a right hook or haymaker not a oi zuki, as the likelihood of being attacked on the street against a chudan oi zuki are non existent but right handed haymakers would probably be 95% of common street assaults. Not meant for a karate vs karate attack.

      there are many explanations for this movement, depending on the context of the kata, have you ever heard of the saying, a block its a blow, its a lock, its a throw

    It's sad, the typical Shotokan guru counters BS with more BS. ALL of these people missed a great chance to be karate players.
