    Tough winterdays with lots of snow and ice this February in the Netherlands.

    Just the fact that last sunday you could skate on ice and coming sunday you can barbeque because of the weather is amazing to me

      @@JPowerMMA If you really think that is the cause, you're probably the subject to indoctrination and conditioning of politics. Also The Dutch don't really drive a lot of SUV's.

    It was simply amazing to skate on nature ice as a freetime speedskater. Best weekend of my life.

      Lol, Denk dat ik 1 van de weinige Hollanders ben die het niet heeft... Ik vind het gemeen koud, mijn voeten doen zeer, mijn rug vermoord me en ik wilde als kind al alleen maar naar huis waar het warm was. Ben nu 40 en heb het nog steeds niet :) Dat gezegd hebbende: jemig wat was het mooi afgelopen weekend. Ik ben fotografe en het landschap was echt magisch mooi en zo fotogeniek en ja, ik heb zelfs even op het ijs gelopen :)

    Ach zeg, ontroerend mooi. The sound on the ice, the grace of the skaters. They skate like they walk. Growing up in Utrecht in the 50's, we skated on ijsbaan Vooruit. Blissful memories, but shit it was cold back then in wintertime.

      You can estimate thickness of the ice from the sound it makes. Thin ice makes intense crackling sound and you are about to go swimming. :) The ice on the video is about 5 cm thick. Greetings from land of snow and ice Finland

    Back in the late '70s it got to -20 F in Lawrence, Kansas, where I was attending school. I decided to ice skate on the frozen irrigation canals. It was all good fun until I tried to change back into my shoes that I had left sitting on the bank in the sub-zero temperatures.

      I skated to school too on the '70s just south of Amsterdam. Skates and shoes I took into the school so they would remain warm and easy to slip back into.

    Agreed. But I doubt very much we will enjoy the winters that we will have to face then. Everything aside I did enjoy the ice as short as it lasted.

    Lived in Den Bosch when I was 6-7 years old......loved to watch the graceful skaters......all I had were these stupid wood skates with leather straps... worthless.....(1952-3).....later, spent years flying 707's which could "Dutch Roll"......start swinging back and forth like a skater.....if you didn't stop the motion the bird would flip over and start slinging engines........then break apart.....learned that from the survivor of one that broke apart in 1959......anyway loved the Dutch....spoke the language (don't remember anything except "can I have a little bit of candy')......Capt. Mike....SAT

      Stupid wooden skates? They work well for children. That is how I learned skating. When I was 15 I changed to Viking skates as your ankles are stronger then.

      This was not filmed in the area i live, but it looks simular at the place of "de wieden" and "de weerribben". Tremendous area in the winter, but also in the summer!

    The moment the temperatures start lowering the Dutch develop 'skate fever'. Hoping it will get cold enough to go out on natural ice. Sadly I injured myself before learning it properly. These conditions don't happen very often in the Netherlands.

      Im sorry to hear my dear. when i was a teenager/early twenties ice scating was pretty normal every winter. And when it was thawing we went ice shelf walking "shotsje lopen" . elfsteden koorts hadden we toen later in de 90's , zal het dan toch of niet :-)

      Skating was happening nearly every year! So to say it almost never happens is not true. Only lately it has changed. 2018 skating was possible for one week and three years later again. In 2019 and 2020 frost was not strong and long enough unfortunately.

      @@Weerchris Well, maybe in the area where you live, I truly did skate 6 (!) days in a row in Amstelveen and on the Langeraarse Plassen. 27 February till 4 March. I don't make up stories here: 6 days of skating in 2018!

    Great to see the dutch enjoying these winter activities! Though I guess you dont get too much of these conditions in the Netherlands during winter? For me, living in mid Sweden, we have snow and frozen lakes for months. However not everyone enjoys that, but if you do you have plenty of winter activities just waiting outside the door.

      When I was young we could skate every winter. For months. Because of the so called "Russian Bear", a very cold north-east wind during winter times. But the last 2 decennia this Russian Bear stayed mostly away. Until 2021! (Sorry, only in Dutch: www.weerplaza.nl/weerinhetnieuws/weerweetjes/russische-beer/3993/ )

    It is sad, realy. Because of the Climate crisis, these moments have become rarer and rarer. And they will disapear if we don’t act now.

      You might be surprised if due to the warmer north pole, the gulfstream get's pushed southwards it might actually get colder during winters in the Netherlands till around the year 2100. Sometimes a warmer climate globally can make it colder locally. Ask the Americans who see cold air pushed from the North Pole into their country more often nowadays.

      @@randar1969 the warm water belt might even stop alltogether. Yes, I know. But nothing indicates that dutch winters are becoming colder. If anything, they are becoming warmer, for decades now. Spring is much earlier than it used to. Just a few day’s after this film was made, it was over 15 degrees Celsius and people where picknicking in parks.

    Little bit concerned, because nobody has any safetyequipment on ice, icespikes or something that helps you float. In Finland there is always couple of cases that go too early on thin ice or too late in the spring on thick but very fragile ice, unfortunately.

      Most people don't skate on deep lakes. There's often an 'ijsmeester' or ice master, who checks the thickness of the ice.

      Ahh shut up you don't see them, but they are everywhere ..!!.. And if they are not we are not stupid we check it ourselfs it's our history and you would think we know how to deal with some ice checking nah.

    Itis 2021 and the IQ is awful. And it matters, because the reality of thi (I love iceskating too) is also about very bright clear air and very dark shiny ice.

      @@gertebert jij draait oorzaak en gevolg om. Wij besteden geld aan schaatsen omdat schaatsen belangrijk is voor heel veel Nederlanders en er ook veel aktieve schaatsers zijn waaronder een groot deel van de wereldtop.
