We are taking a look at the two Space Marine figures that are on the market Bandai and McFarlane. I give a breakdown on which one I think is the better bang for your buck.
The McFarlane figures are designed to be painted and army built. Plus at $25-$30 bucks that’s a lot of plastic for the money. It’s all about imagination, like I’m doing a Marine that’s armor is made up different armors from different Chapters, sort of a lone survivor. Heavy paint chipping, pitting and deep scratches.
@@averagejoestabletopgaming it sounds like it could be a neat story, a brand new astarte just earning his power armor fighting in istvan using gorrila tactics all on his own while constantly having to repair and replace armor and weapons taken from dead comrades.
This is the VS vid that I've been waiting for. U should get a ton of views, thanks , man. Jeez if ur saying $200 then we are looking at 10 Mcfarlane figures to 1 Bandai, I know which I prefer.
Gentlemen, price is the last thing to discuss. Most of us would pay for a good figure as much as it costs. Let us talk about the figures themselves. McFarlane is absolutely better than Bandai. And the reason for this is proportions! McFarlane looks like an extremely athletic human, whereas Bandai, with all its mismatches, is just an awkward glossy plastic toy. I am surprised, nobody wrote about it here. So, the artist, who designed McFarlane version has a much better understanding of human anatomy.
That is one thing that I noticed and fail to mention. The Bandai figure does look like he is a little squished down height wise making his arms and legs look a little long. It reminds me a lot of their Gundam figures across the shoulders and through the arms. He’s to robot looking.
@@Nasoulis34 Its probably the cost of licensing and general greed. Lots of bandai licensed products are expensive, especially star wars, and marvel S.H. Figuarts figures. They probably did all the math and market research, They know they'd make the most money for the both of them at the price they set. They know fans will end up buying both of them eventually...
I have to say I was shocked the last few McFarlne toys I have gotten GoT and Harry potter the plastic quality has been absoltue shit. I was prepared to never get another Mcfarlen figure again or recomend them However the actual build and sculpt of the McFarlne Warhammer figures is top notch.
Even before you pointed out how light that Bandai Space Marine is, I could tell how thin the plastic is. I'm guessing it's mostly hollow on the inside. The sounds it makes when you handle it (as well as how floppy it is) make me think it's made out of the same plastic they use in Gunpla kits.
@@HolyknightVader999 what's really ridiculous is that it's not in production anymore, so the price has gone from $100 to around $200. The McFarlane figure has gone up a bit in price too, but it's only around $50 to $60. If you've got the spare cash to drop I'd just recommend that one, it's a really good figure. Not as much detail or articulation as the Bandai one, but it's a giant hunk of solid plastic. No floppy bits and you definitely don't have to worry about it falling over.
@@samvimes9510 I know. With how cheap the material is for the Bandai marines, I was half-expecting them to sell for lower prices like the GUNPLA model kits. Meanwhile, I'm troop-building combat units with my own McFarlane Space Marines, I have four now, and I'll soon have six of them. Two Blood Angels hellblasters to accompany my Blood Angels lieutenant, and I'll soon get two Ultramarine Rievers to accompany my Ultramarine Assault Intercessor.
I dropped my Bandai on hardwood floor and 2 pieces broke off and there are 2 tiny marks on leg that are white now. For $100 it is not worth it in my opinion and I already preordered Salamander and Imperial fist. McFarland, though paint not near as good, is totally worth the price in my opinion.
I totally agree. My Bandai came out of the box elbow pieces falling off. Someone else mentioned in comments that all you need is to hit the McFarlane with some wash and it looks 10x better. Thanks for supporting the channel with your views and comments.
I was originally going to buy a Bandai to complement my McFarlane marine. But after hearing this, I think I'll go buy the blank Mcfarlane figure instead so I can paint it in either homebrew colors or Ultramarine colors.
I really don’t understand why bandai’s space marine is so expensive. I’m pretty familiar with a lot of bandai’s gungla model kits and there mecha’s and robot kits and figures in general, but like the space marine is kinda just ridiculous. Considering the prices there asking for it you should be getting more. Those elbow armour pieces honestly seem like pretty lazy/bad designs on bandai’s part, unless of course it’s just a rare quality control issue which does happen. And honestly, to be quite frank, the articulation seems kinda disappointing for a bandai figure, i mean I’ve seen gunpla kits for 10-20 bucks that have way more articulation then bandai’s space marine. Comparing the two, I’d say bandai’s one is a nicer display piece especially with those paint apps, but overall unless your strictly out of the box no customization sort of person, you’d probably be better off getting mcfarlanes space marine and just adding a little extra work to it to go the extra mile. If bandai’s space marine was one of there really high end tamashii nations figures then maybe the big price tags would be slightly more justified, but to be honest, for the price of one bandai space marine I’d be better off buying multiple mcfarlane space marines and building myself a small squad.
Licensing fees from GW obviously, duh. Gunpla kits are cheaper because it's Bandai's own IP. Gunplas also don't come pre-built like action figures, these help reduce production costs Also $90 pricing is not a rare thing for Bandai. See their price for SHF figures from different IP's like Marvel or Star Wars
@@christ1257 you’re got a point, but it’s still kind of disappointing that a basic mass retail figure is superior to a supposed high end collectible figure.

Because of the price I honestly thought the Bandai figure had quite a lot of metal parts. To find it's all plastic is a real eye opener. Definitely going with McFarlane. Thanks for the video.

I bought the bandai from gw directly and it was only $100 so idk why you keep saying it's $200? Aftermarket pricing shouldn't really be factored. You talked about customizing your figure and how you can do it with the mcfarlane marine buttt, you can still do it with the bandai marines. A lot of people do it lol. 1 thing you didn't really talk about at all which was disappointing was the overall marine accuracy to the models we buy from gw and how well they actually just look from a design standpoint. I personally think the mcfarlane marines are clunky and awkward. The aquilla on the chest is very stylized too which I don't like. I just think the bandai marines look more like models, just larger. I also glue the elbow guards so they don't pop off
I misspoke I paid $100 for mine. Outside the heads I think they are very similar in design. One is just better for articulation. If I had to put one for looking most like the models I wouldn’t say one has the advantage over the other. The Bandai looks to squatty it’s to wide and the McFarlane looks to tall and lean. Neither really hit the mark in that category.
I´m having a hard time painting the articulation parts, because the color easily scrached off. Maybe black plastic would generally be better. But besides that i love the paint it in your style idea.
I love 40K in general, my first army when the local hobby store was open was Salamanders, son of Vulkan, and I love them and I still do, when I got into the lore, I started to appreciate some of the other chapter, the Blood Angels, are my nr.1, they are space super soldier vampire, so what is not to love, the Vampire Counts are my favourite army back when I started to look up fantasy, and while yes the Eldar & Imperial Guard are something I truly love, when first seeing the model I was thinking, "Hey there should action figures with those guys", this was back around 2012, btw., and reading some more info, DC comics approached G.W. about making a comics series set in 40K by Vertigo and Dark Horse respectively, they approached them twice over, once in 2010 and then again 2014, and in both cases, they turned them down on the accounts they could not make "Grim Dark" enough,.....yeah Dakr Hose, not dark enough, and they had even ideas about action figures back then, it was golden chance the slipped away, now I am happy that we get 40K action figure sI really am but, while I do love Mcfarlne since he has better shape deging, I feel that having to option to paint your own figures is a great thing, Perhaps Figma will take on making the Eldar, Still well done of that repaint, FOR THE EMPEROR AND SANGUINIUS!
Thanks so much. That would have been cool to get all the figures back then. That’s nuts that DC and Dark Horse aren’t dark enough big they go with an agreement with Marvel? Some times I don’t understand decision making. Oh well I guess.
@@averagejoestabletopgaming Yeah well the ideas were there from what I read on this old forum link, do not have it anymore, it's dead now sorry, but from what I understood, there several ideas for the start-up of a line of 40K action figures following a series, a Clone Wars 2D style animations kind of like the one with that Eldar in the new 40K Animations trailer, but there was some BS from higher admin ups that "NO" and the worse part was that from what I got was that following the Dawn of War story that was murdered fucked by C.S.Goto and the rest of G.W., there was a petition from the story developers of DoW saga to make a series of comics about the Blood Raven and flesh out the background of their main characters, but this was already after Disney acquired Marvel, sooo perhaps corporate sabotage and espionage, Which is funny because Blizzard worked with DC figure artists for their products and I really wanted an Illidan action figure after it came out,.....if WarCraft 3 reforged had not,...well you know, I have hope still that perhaps someday they will take up the mantle of the DoW franchise, and get Paul Dobson back,.....HOLY SHIT, HIM, CHRIS MSETZEN AND CRISPIN FREEMAN, on the same set, OH HELL YES!!
actually there have been some comic books (graphic novels) released by third party publications about the 40k universe. I remember there was one about the black templars.
I just noticed thet the paintjob on the Bandai is not really matt. Not gloss either, I'd call that satin. I noticed watching your video, but it is the same on mine too.
I’d agree with that. I did find on mine this leg armor portion looks unfinished. Like it’s a matte base coat that they didn’t finish satin like the rest of the figure.

I don’t think the price point is a fare comparison, I paid £75 for my Bandai one & £25 for my McFarlane one, granted that’s still a £50 difference but going with the clearly massively marked up price of $200 is unjust towards the Bandai figure for review purposes, the comparable price is what they retail for, not a crazily marked up price 😕 Other than that, great review 😊, your Blood Angel looks great 😃

That will be awesome to see. Do you have and Instagram that you post to? I agree I have two marines and I’m waiting for my sister and hellblaster.
I really hope see some tau battlesuits in the Mcfarlane line.
That would be cool figures. Even crazier if to scale compared to the marines.
Never knew Bandai made the Space marines
They’ve made a few.
Did you have to pop off the parts to paint your McFarlane?
Yes I did. I broke him down to body, legs, arms, shoulder pads, backpack, and head.
@@averagejoestabletopgaming was it tricky to take apart?
I´m having a hard time painting the articulation parts,
because the color easily scrached off.
Maybe black plastic would generally be better.
But besides that i love the paint it in your style idea.
Ya I have had the same issue. I’ve had to touch up joints and the hands due to movement and placing weapon back into his grip. Thanks.
I love 40K in general, my first army when the local hobby store was open was Salamanders, son of Vulkan, and I love them and I still do, when I got into the lore, I started to appreciate some of the other chapter, the Blood Angels, are my nr.1, they are space super soldier vampire, so what is not to love, the Vampire Counts are my favourite army back when I started to look up fantasy, and while yes the Eldar & Imperial Guard are something I truly love, when first seeing the model I was thinking, "Hey there should action figures with those guys", this was back around 2012, btw., and reading some more info, DC comics approached G.W. about making a comics series set in 40K by Vertigo and Dark Horse respectively, they approached them twice over, once in 2010 and then again 2014, and in both cases, they turned them down on the accounts they could not make "Grim Dark" enough,.....yeah Dakr Hose, not dark enough, and they had even ideas about action figures back then, it was golden chance the slipped away, now I am happy that we get 40K action figure sI really am but, while I do love Mcfarlne since he has better shape deging, I feel that having to option to paint your own figures is a great thing,
Perhaps Figma will take on making the Eldar,
Still well done of that repaint, FOR THE EMPEROR AND SANGUINIUS!
Thanks so much. That would have been cool to get all the figures back then. That’s nuts that DC and Dark Horse aren’t dark enough big they go with an agreement with Marvel? Some times I don’t understand decision making. Oh well I guess.
@@averagejoestabletopgaming Yeah well the ideas were there from what I read on this old forum link, do not have it anymore, it's dead now sorry, but from what I understood, there several ideas for the start-up of a line of 40K action figures following a series, a Clone Wars 2D style animations kind of like the one with that Eldar in the new 40K Animations trailer, but there was some BS from higher admin ups that "NO" and the worse part was that from what I got was that following the Dawn of War story that was murdered fucked by C.S.Goto and the rest of G.W., there was a petition from the story developers of DoW saga to make a series of comics about the Blood Raven and flesh out the background of their main characters, but this was already after Disney acquired Marvel, sooo perhaps corporate sabotage and espionage,
Which is funny because Blizzard worked with DC figure artists for their products and I really wanted an Illidan action figure after it came out,.....if WarCraft 3 reforged had not,...well you know, I have hope still that perhaps someday they will take up the mantle of the DoW franchise, and get Paul Dobson back,.....HOLY SHIT, HIM, CHRIS MSETZEN AND CRISPIN FREEMAN, on the same set, OH HELL YES!!
actually there have been some comic books (graphic novels) released by third party publications about the 40k universe. I remember there was one about the black templars.
true is hard to find any of these in store with normal price...
At this point I could see that.
Good insight
Thank you hope it helped.
Nice video
Thank you. And thanks for supporting the channel.
That Bandai price is crazy.. the new primaris captain is more expensive than Moshow date masamune..
It’s because he has a ton of accessories and metal components.
Glad to see Mc Farlane still has its good quality and price
Yes. I can’t wait until all the other figures start coming out.
@@averagejoestabletopgaming My childhood consisted on collecting McFarlane's Halo miniatures, now as an adult the new collection will be Warhammer 40k, it seems life did a full circle
That’s awesome. My childhood started with 40K so it is awesome to finally see this franchise get the kind of merchandise as others.
I don’t think the price point is a fare comparison, I paid £75 for my Bandai one & £25 for my McFarlane one, granted that’s still a £50 difference but going with the clearly massively marked up price of $200 is unjust towards the Bandai figure for review purposes, the comparable price is what they retail for, not a crazily marked up price 😕
Other than that, great review 😊, your Blood Angel looks great 😃
You’re right I misspoke on price. I realize that I had to go back a rewatch. I didn’t buy a mark up one just wrong words. I spent $100 on Bandai when the McFarlane was $20 so an $80 difference here in the states. Thanks for pointing that out.
I got the McFarlane Artist Proof Space Marine! I don't want to take it apart to paint it though...
It really isn’t all that bad I’ve seen some involved breakdowns on IG. I was the same way, so all I pulled was the shoulder pads.
I cant find these bandai figures anywhere!
Ya the only way to get any now is jump in the limited order window on GW’s site. I think on 27 March they are releasing the White Scar figure. I should be getting my Salamander and Imperial Fist soon and I can do video number two.
@@averagejoestabletopgaming neat
Ebay would be your best bet.
very cool i will get one of these as a reward to myself once i finish building and painting my imperial guard army i have to build about 90 infantry 3 tanks some ogryns hqs and a baneblade i have only built 10 infantry LOL wish me luck!
Good luck! What regiment are you doing? I have Catachan.

Very cool. I’m glad to be reaching some of my northern loyal servants of the Emperor. Find me on Instagram I’d love to see your progress if your posting. Link is in bio.
@@averagejoestabletopgaming ok will do :D
Though I will say that Bandai ultramarine looks better than my Imperial Fist by them
My Imperial Fist has some flaws I’m not happy with. I really like the Salamander, it’s my favorite of the Bandai figures.
Funny, even if they cost the same, I'd like the McFarlane marines better.
It does have a nicer heavier feel. More durable in my opinion.
How much for the Bandi? It looks cheap plastic, if i was paying that much I'd want it to be weighty
I would agree that they are 100+, but I feel like they should have more weight.
watching to decide what to buy but all i want to buy is the tmnt pyjamas!!!! XD
Lol.
200 dude you were ripped off it's on amazon for like 39.99
I misspoke, I meant to say $100 and that was for the Bandai. I got my McFarlane figures for $29.99
Mc version cost me 35 Usd in Vietnam
That’s what the new ones in the US are going for now. I preordered my Hellblaster Blood Angel and Sister both for 35.
I don’t like the McFarlane’s helmet, it looks stupid. Too long. Also it’s like super hard to get the chain sword into his hand
I would agree the head and neck are my least favorite parts. The hand issue sucks too but once you get it in it’s good to go on the display shelf. The head can never be made to look right.
If you put his hand in hot water for a bit it will become much easy to equip his weapons
That is a good idea, just don’t know what it would do to a painted figure.
Fucking bandai.
Gotta make money.
