That’s cool that you guys are building a truck for a kid’s first truck out of his grandpa’s truck, I think I got it right, Anyway it’s cool! Funny thing that Phantom said about the miss and it will sound like a miss but it’s because it will have a cam. My dad told me my first car had a miss when I put a big cam in it. Phantom made me think about a cool memory 👍

Talking about first engines and doing stuff wrong reminded me of an engine that my cousin and I rebuilt. Wouldn't turn over and it was a stick shift so we drug it behind a tractor until it would, lasted about 1000 miles beffore it spun a main.
My 5.3 had 280k on it and i sold it to a buddy and it's now his sons first truck.
It is the best truck that gm has ever made...1999 to 2006...

2001 Silverado single cab here with a 4.3 V6 needing a LS swap if you want to. But on a real note that's awesome what y'all are doing for the kid.
I had a 2001 Silverado ext cab with a 4.8, the very first truck I bought on my own. It was definitely a fun truck at the time, great truck to start with. Awesome guys, that kid is gonna love that truck

Detroit Axle is good parts!! I have those same rotors on my Cummins 04 Ram 3500, quad cab, extended bed and I tow the sh*t outta that truck. Never had an issue with their brake parts. My wife's van has them, ex-wife's jeep has them too. My middle daughter had them on her Acura as well.
I have a small block 82 s10 that my grandfather bought new, went to my uncle and then on to me. It’s a rusted out turd but there isn’t enough money in the world to get it from me. I’ll probably never even start it again but it’s not leaving. 🤷

My 05 4wd Sierra has 215k on it, the 4L60E has never been out of it. My 4L70E on my Trailblazer SS isn't happy at the moment but the only work ive done to my stock 5.3 in my Sierra is i replaced a busted valve spring, and fixed an exhaust leak.

The 2019 and newer "big" brakes and 4 piston calipers are bolt on for these trucks. Works good if you are already planning on running 22's
It will be a very special thing for the teen to get a car worked on by a legend. HOPEFULLY the take care of this as this came down through the family speech is effective. There is not the ability to replace something like that. I can't function anymore now tc

Sometimes I miss these simple builds with mild upgrades to the motor. It’s achievable for just about anyone on a budget with time.dont get me wrong I love me some proline rebuilds but that not quite in the budget.

You should probably install a transmission thermostat that keeps the fluid temperature a lot colder. During the winter, my transmission stay anywhere from 140 to 150° during the summer 180°

I always leave the camshaft in the bag I pour my whole container of Lube in the cam storage bag and saturate the cam then after the cams installed in the block, I squeeze all the lube out of the bag back into the lube tube for the next cam...

Yep rockers are a big issue on those trucks , I have a 04 cat eye. Crew cab just did inners outters cab corners and the box . Road salt here is Canada kills cars and trucks quick. Cant wait to see what you do with it.

On those rockers the body shop I work at we always put a hd rocker from keystone they are thicker than stock. They have always worked well for us and they have more metal
Also with eraser wheel ive found slower speed works well. The heat build up can be hard on paint. Which my shop has the air tool version that's a crud buster I don't remember what the proper name is but snap on does make a battery version.

I've owned a few of these 5.3 99-02s that's actually in great shape compared to an Indiana truck the frames rust out a lot on the extended cabs and the coils near firewall usually on drivers side go bad I guess from lifting the hood during bad weather. Fuel pump is right there between bed and cab
