Beautiful piece- Thank you for it. This is one of the very few hymns in modern church music that will likely see the test of centuries. It is sung in as many Catholic churches and Protestant ones, which very few other hymns do. It does not name God or Jesus, yet it is filled with a love that can come from no other. A great rendition of a Rock and Roll musician's vision of God. For the rest, go look up Rolf and find out who "Secret Garden" were.

A hymn is for the worship of the deity it is written (thou imputest the lyrics according to thine own interpretation; for others the addresses can be someone else, like a partner, and hence their choice of this song at weddings). Also a hymn stylistically is different. This is a song; that isn’t a synonym.

While I can see your absolute secularist interpretation, I don't think that is what the author had in mind at all, but I also don't think he ever saw it a a "churchy" thing either. Ponder a bit over the story of the "Footsteps" and maybe it will come clearer, or maybe you just need to hear the joy and a chorister's voice as the mystical other, the source of Creation "raises you up". As to your comment about stylistically, I'm not even going to comment- even within the early hymnals of the American colonies, the breath and difference of tune, tone and complexity is awesome. I'll leave it at I call you on that one.
