  • Taking advantage of a break in the rainy season, I took the opportunity to visit a Bortle Class 4 location in Izu, Shizuoka. This unique park is situated on an ancient seaside volcanic cone and features a unique dinosaur children's park. With dark eastern and southern views I captured some Milky Way and deep-sky-object images (M24, M8) with my Canon EOS R8 (35mm RF lens) and the Askar FMA135 astrograph lens respectively. Views from the summit of Mount Komuro were spectacular!

      Hey Massimo, thanks. I think the Milky Way images are so-so, but I will nail it next time! This was also the first time I ever imaged deep-sky-objects in a dark zone with no filter. I like the way the M24 and M8 images came out. Looks different than my dual narrowband filter images. Cheers!

    Thank you for another interesting video Paul san. As you said hunting milky way is not easy that I think same. We must search shooting parameter every place , every environment. But when we get nice one, we feel heavens happy . All the best and clear skies Dr. !!

      Thanks Seki-san. In some respects capturing the Milky Way is more difficult because it requires really clear skies, mostly summer months and almost exclusively NO moon. I think the opportunities will be few and far between here near Tokyo. But I now have the tools to attempt it (again). Thanks for watching!

    Fantastic Video, Paul! I feel like I just had a 3-hour astrophotography course, broken up by a 2-hour world travel/cultural appreciation class! 😉. . . and all in only 25 minutes! Your points are all great! Don’t multitask is good advice! Also, I agree with your ISO setting comment, I found ISO 3200 worked really well for me -and many photogs seem to recommend higher than normal ISOs for Milky Way! I also was amazed at the nebulosity you captured for Lagoon Nebula without an Ha filter! That was surprising! Finally, as if the astro-stuff wasn’t enough. . .I was floored by your “Ranger hike” (with a 50 pound backpack!) through the woods/fields/electric fence and wild boars! Looking at your map, I think I would have tried to vector straight from Dinosaur Plaza to the Southern Cross Resort.. .at least the wild boars did not get you! So. . . . ceremonial bells tolling for astro-targets in one video, an “Indianna Jones” cross country trek in the dark for this one. . . I can’t imagine what your next “astrophotography” photography video will include! 😊 keep going!!! Mark!

      Hello Mark, and thanks for the nice review. It was definitely one of the more interesting trips. I would not consider any of the images to be great, but they were definitely good enough to make a video. I too was also surprised at the Lagoon nebula image and the "different look" you get with no filters. It is the first time I ever tried filterless nebula imaging. I am thinking to do more of it and perhaps combining it with some dual-narrow-band images as well. Next time I will nail the Milky Way images. I keep learning and configuring and getting new ideas to try. Lovin it! Now, if only the rainy season would end! BTW, my fitness routine of 4 to 5x per week (at FIT24) weight training (30 min each) is a requirement for my style of astrophotography. Not sure how long I will be able to maintain it at my age; but never give up! Cheers / clear skies!

      Hi Jill, Glad you think so! I can do Milky Way and a DSO simultaneously. I agree. Kind of cool.... and still compact.

    Enjoyed 変な外人Duo debut!
    Very interesting setting. I remember my old days using star tracker.
    You are far luckier than I. I ended up no star observations in June because of mainly clouds and smoke from Canada. Everyone complains here.
    Hope you keep producing interesting programs.

    You remind me of PBS Rick Steves in a good way. I have the AM5 with the asiair+ and I have ordered the WO gt81 wifd. Keep up the amazing 😻 videos.

      Hi Steven, thanks! I have heard that comment a few times before. Funny thing, though, until someone mentioned that, I did not know Rick Steves. Sometimes my world in Asia is a bit secluded from certain popular Western things. Thanks for watching APJ!

    Amazing video! Very impressed by comparing the images from Yokohama with the new location. No wonder I do not see the milky way in the skies above Kashiwa. And of course I would expose for some 6 seconds only…

    • @jpastroguy
      @jpastroguy  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Matthias. Kashiwa is Bortle class 6 or 7, so not much different than here in Yokohama. My Milky Way imaging plans did not quite work out but at least I got some decent single frame images. Next time I will nail it all and do some stacking, too.

    Hi Paul. You can stack jpgs in Sequator (free software) which is more for milky way/wide field anyway.

      Really? I did not know that. Thanks so much for that information! Actually, I am going out tonight (2023.07.22) to try again!
