Failure chose to cover the 1990 hit "Enjoy the Silence", a worldwide smash and Depeche Mode's best-selling and most well-known single. The members of Depeche Mode were reportedly very pleased with the album, and with the Failure track particularly; Andrew Fletcher said that he actually prefers their cover over his band's original version.

Unheralded, but one of the best covers ever. Deserves to be up there with covers like Jimi Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower and Johnny Cash's Hurt. Really needs more recognition.

one man: Kelli motherfuckin' Scott. check out his fills in the failure song "daylight". theres an outro guitar solo and with a mad bass/drum jam and the fills are all similarly amazing

Kellii Scott is one of the best drummers in rock today. In addition to his work with Failure, he was fantastic on Veruca Salt's fourth album, really gave Louise Post the backend punch to make a harder sounding record.
Can't believe this song doesn't pop up whenever I ask for an enjoy the silence cover. How is this cover not more popular?
Back when I was a DJ in the 90s I played this a lot! Also r with the Cure and Self covers too. I don’t think I ever played the DM originals ever again! Oh and when I played Slingshot by On for the very first time some guy called in to say he hated the song! Into heavy rotation it went!
I like how the highlight of this cover isn't the singing, it's the guitar!!! The buildup to the 1:00 mark is awesome.

Found this around 2001 and loved this cover. I think it's the best cover of Enjoy The Silence. Biggest regret is not looking more into other music they did besides a few songs. They are now my favorite band it took nearly 20 years to really discover them but I am glad I did.

Because each band member is so talented in their own right I think Kelliii Scott is oftentimes over looked. I’d put him up there in the same league as Bonham and Grohl. I love this band. I’m so glad they are back together. It must of been absolutely frustrating knowing that your band was better than 90% of the bands out there but because of shitty music industry politics and business practices you guys got hardly any recognition at all. Better late than never I suppose.

@@whothennow24 He’s not a flashy drummer but I wouldn’t call him basic by any means. He more than serves the songs and the dude’s written some of the most interesting drum parts that I’ve heard.
@@whothennow24look him up playing Distorted Fields. It’s on his personal UA-cam channel. He serves whatever song he’s on perfectly, and that’s what makes a great drummer.

This song opened a whole new world for me back when my 10 year old self listened to it for the first time on the radio. Not only was it an excellent cover of one of the greatest bands to exist, but I then realized how underappreciated Failure were as a whole, immensely enjoying their albums shortly afterward, especially Magnified and Fantastic Planet.
This is the only cover of this song I remember. Why was it so hard to find? Was all over MTV and the radio back in the day.

Can anyone answer this for me- that dirty, grungy, amazing tone that kicks in at 1:05. How?! There's no way that it's just bass? I know Ken/failure are known for their nasty yet beautiful bass tone. But this is over the top. I love it.

Whats funny is that I heard this version first, because it came up on Spotify since I like Failure. Save it to a Playlist and didn't listen to it for some time but knowing i have 1 new Failure song.. After some time being at the bar I heard the original for the first time and was like damn I heard this once before better Shazam it. My dumb ass is now like duh its the same damn song!

wow first time listening to this again since 7th grade back in 2003/2004
I remember when this was released. I bought the album never having heard of Failure before, and man...that drum fill into the big instrumental after the first chorus. Perfect lead-in to what was and still is one of the best full distortion guitar tones in history. I'm not usually one to like covers, but this one is good. That said...I almost wish the rest of the song would have stayed as massive as when it first kicks in, maybe with a down chorus before the outro (played huge again). Great tune as is, regardless.

+Chris Kotra It's not a remix, it's a reinterpretation of the song. There is an album "Various artists for the masses" that contains reinterpretations of Depeche Mode songs from other artists. Great album.

It's from an album of covers by contemporary bands in the late 90s called For the Masses.
It's got covers by The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Deftones, Dishwalla, GusGus, Failure, Rammstein and many others.
Highly recommend it, you can probably pick up a fair priced copy in decent condition on eBay.
