I was in the ER once - the nurse asked me the pain scale question.... I said 7.
My husband then chimed in and said "she called end stage labour an 8 and breaking her ankle a 6 - just for perspective"
The nurse looked at me and said "OK you're one of them I'll make a note"
To be fair my mother is a senior ER nurse and I asked her once what 10 was in the pain scale she said "It's when the pain is so bad you want to asked them to skip the pain meds and take you out the back and shoot you in the head - level pain.". I've never felt THAT bad...

I had a homebirth with my 5th baby. I had a stitch for a minor tear. I had a water birth (aka- midwife's anesthesia) and I used Hypnobabies for pain control during the labor and birth. I took NOTHING for my bottom afterward.
A couple days later I had a raging case of double mastitis. Because my midwife couldn't prescribe an antibiotic, I went to urgent care, after taking 800mg ibuprofen. I got called back and the nurse asked what was wrong. I told her and then said, "Can we just cut them off?!?" I was dead freaking serious. So I wonder where that sits on your mom's pain scale? 🤣

The pain 1-10 is something I have done.
I have chronic pain and you get used to it after years. So when something happens it is actually worse than before. I thought I had hit 10 before, and then I felt something that hit mid and low back, both kidneys, felt worse than fire and I blacked out. I described it to the doc as 11, it was the worst I have ever felt and topped my past experiences.

it obviously still happens now, but ive kinda learned to conceal/mask it all
i was in and out of hospitals, nobody could figure out what was wrong with me, etc.
i would say i was in the 10/10 pain scale… until i felt the pain of more than five kidney stones in one of my kidneys while also suffering with a very lately diagnosed chronic disease.
shit was an 11/10. i wanted to die at that point 💀 i feel like we need to start a petition or something for us people with chronic pain like you or in my situation chronic diseases to make a scale for us where we can rate the pain from like 0-100 😭😭

I never know how to answer the scale of pain question. Like you, I have lived with injury and severe chronic pain for almost twenty years. Someone's 5 could be my 3. When you look at me, you don't see my injuries bc they're all inside. I do limp some and waddle like a penguin more the more pain I'm in. It shows on my face bc I'm not that great at hiding it, but I try to just smile and got about my business. I woke up unable to sit or stand-up straight one morning. I could only flatten my body when I was laying. I couldn't walk right and was using a computer chair for 3 weeks to roll myself to the bathroom and back. My bf took care of me, and we're not together anymore but still friends, and I'm so thankful for him being there for me. I've woken up paralyzed once, had it taken in a pool once and in a vehicle. Thankfully, I was only a passenger. My skin burns from neuropathy and nerve damage to where it feels like I'm standing too close to fire. I try to summarize for Dr and nurses that I've gotten to where I can tolerate the "normal chronic pain" and the new pain is what is hurting me so bad.
I had a bad seizure overnight, and wonder up with my entire left side from my neck to toes were numb. My hand and foot were paralyzed. I was terrified. I was in severe pain. They gave me morphine. I was scared to even take it. I will never willingly take that again. It helped with the pain, but it made it hard for me to walk without having very shaky legs. The next day I was sharing a lot. I hate that stuff.

She gave me a glare like i was a liar then proceeded to ask if i was sure i wasn't pregnant, while glaring at me. Then she asked me several more times with the same teacher "tell me the truth" glare over the course of the next few hours. I had to sign a damn paper so the hospital wouldn't get in trouble if i'd lied.. turned out i had a rather large kidney stone btw. So glad i sat in the er taking up a bed for so many additional hours just so this nurse could assume i was a liar, and i could say "There is absolutely no way i could be pregnant, i haven't had sex," over and over.

What I would rate as 6 or even 5 someone else might rate as 10 because they have never experienced something at 9 (there is nothing in your mind but pain) or 10 (The pain literally makes you lose conciousness) and it's their rating standard that doctors judge everyone by including us who have more chronic pain. I trucked on with level 8 pain repeatedly in my late teens because of medical neglect and bullying from my parents all of my life, and I thankfully only briefly experienced a level 9.5 pain (nothing existed except for the pain and if it had lasted longer I might have lost consciousness from not being able to breathe properly) when I was 7 years old (thunderclap headache that went undiagnosed).

My Mom ended up in the hospital. Described her back pain as through the roof. Nurses didn’t believe her and kept moving her and trying to get her out of bed and walking. They even threatened her that she was going to have to go to a nursing home if she didn’t walk, in an effort to get her to walk (they told me they often do this to get people up and moving). They didn’t understand when that didn’t work, and blamed my Mom for not being motivated. She even hit them once when they were roughly moving her. Turned out she had a severe spinal infection she had acquired on top of her known spinal stenosis. They only found it because the doctors decided to do more testing after all. They all treated her so differently after that. If only they had believed her in the first place, would have saved her a lot of suffering. Not everyone is lying…

    • @kamilululu2515

And they might not even be lying. I tend to have anxiety attacks that make me believe I can't move my body and, while I should know I can, it's not that easy. If I'm saying that I can't move, it's because I truly believe that in the moment, even if from the outside it will look stupid, because obviously I can move! People who help me usually have to move my body themselves for a bit and then I can finally ground myself enough to get back and have a proper panic attack.
So, yes, I can technically move my body. Does that mean I'm lying when I'm having an anxiety attack and I say I'm unable to move? No. I truly do believe that in the moment, even if it happened before, because I'm in shock. JUST BECAUSE IT'S FROM ANXIETY AND IN MY BRAIN, DOESN'T MEAN I'M LYING FOR ATTENTION.

I'm opiod resistant and have had 21 surgeries on my joints in just over 10 years all before age 35. At ERs my pain is dismissed as drug seeking despite my well documented chart stating dilaudid is the only thing to even take the edge off my pain. It's very unprofessional to disregard someone as a drug seeker right off the bat without looking into their medical history and leaves patients like me afraid to seek help bc we're worried we'll be written off as drug seeking.

    • @personincognito3989
      @personincognito3989 7 місяців тому +2

Opiod resistance is from using opioids over a long time. See a pain specialist or a physiatrist, that is a pain specialist and they can help you get off using opiods all the time. Because clearly they're not working.

    • @AlexandraMeira
      @AlexandraMeira 5 місяців тому

@personincognito3989 While opiate resistance is most commonly a result of using pain medication for a long time, it can also be due to genetics. I, my mother, and my maternal grandmother are all genetically hyper resistant to opiates, benzos, and sedatives. The first time I took an opiate was at 14 after having my wisdom teeth removed. The doctor had to up my dose from 7mg to 20mg of hydrocodone because any less had no effect on me.
You also need to understand that coming off of pain medication isn't an option for many people with chronic pain. I've been in pain management for almost 15 years and I will need it for the rest of my life. My day to day pain is so severe that I become suicidal without my medicine.
Our resistance to opiates isn't the problem. The problem is doctors treating us like drug addicts over something we can't control. When I'm in enough pain to be in the hospital Dilaudid is the only thing that works. I don't deserve to suffer because a doctor can't understand that some people need a stronger dose of medicine to get the same effect.

@@personincognito3989 Actually sounds like it could be a form of EDS. It's a common symptom for EDS to not respond to pain meds the same way, and to often need more to take the pain away (for example, local anaesthesia doesn't work as well (for the majority and normally), so there's a requirement for more). I have EDS, and can vouch, they're not lying about conditions existing where pain management is very different to what people expect. I was treated like I was just "drug seeking" after having surgery because my local anaesthesia had worn off within 20 minutes or something, and the pain meds weren't having any impact on my pain. I was in the recovery ward for over 6 hours because they couldn't get the pain under control (normally you're in there for about 30 minutes before moving to another ward).

When I have a bad pancreatitis attack I usually throw up, which means I cant take my pain med. When I asked for it by name, they acted like I was a drug seeker. No, we will give you morphine. I told them it doesn't do anything for my pain. They injected it into my IV and a rash started at the site almost immediately. That's when I found out I was also allergic to morphine! Now I had back pain, severe allergic reaction AND pancreatitis! They gave me a benadryl, took some blood and then gave me something for the nausea. Gotta love when you're treated like a drug seeker when you know what works for you and what doesn't. I've never asked for dilaudid though.

My mum took me to A&E and the nurse who saw me did not ask me what my pain level was. Instead she saw that I wasn’t crying (cause apparently 13 year olds are supposed to scream and cry when they get hurt) and said to my face that she was going to write my pain as 0, I didn’t get the chance to correct her. My mum pushed for an x-Ray and after having my hand yanked into painful poses by a nurse who didn’t seem to believe me, sure enough one of my metacarpals was broken clean in two. I was born extremely premature when she was 29, a miracle baby. She didn't even know she was pregnant until I was crowning. It was also by some miracle that I survived. She never had another pregnancy after me. But going through menopause, all the doctors were convinced she was pregnant just by blood tests. Multiple doctors. It wasn't until an ultrasound discovered she wasn't. She also had wanted another kid for years and knew she wasn't pregnant. It got her hopes up, though. She was also only in her early forties.

When the nurse asked me what were my symptoms & how bad the pain was from 1-10, I proceeded to puke again & still crying told her the highest possible & beyond that. She didn't believe me, told me to give her a real number as she took her time putting in my info until the pain became so severe I passed out in the wheelchair. Woke up a few hours later in a bed hooked up & barely feeling any pain.
Turned out the complication from my surgery developed an infection which turned septic, hence the horrid pain. I had to stay in the hospital for a week as my fever would spike then break so often. The nurse actually came & apologized for not taking me seriously which I appreciated but it wasn't needed. When I was in the hospital for my burst appendix I had to put some definition to the nonsense 1-10 pain scale. I defined 10 as the pain from my appendix exploding, and for most of my stay, that worked. However at a certain point my pain became worse than that, and idk how else to describe that other than 11. If the scale was actually properly defined rather than completely arbitrary patients might have an easier time using it

      Using the Pain Scale
If you want your pain to be taken seriously,
It is important that you take the pain scale seriously.
Because pain is subjective, it is difficult to explain what you’re feeling to another person-even your own doctor. To effectively use the pain scale, familiarize yourself with the levels before your procedure, identifying what key levels are indicative to your pain level. Following a surgery or procedure, typically we tell patients to continue to take medications that allow them to maintain a level of “5 or below.”
      0 - Pain Free
Mild Pain - Nagging, annoying, but doesn’t really interfere with daily living activities.
1 - Pain is very mild, barely noticeable. Most of the time you don’t think about it.
2 - Minor pain. Annoying and may have occasional stronger twinges.
3 - Pain is noticeable and distracting, however, you can get used to it and adapt.
Moderate Pain - Interferes significantly with daily living activities.
4 - Moderate pain. If you are deeply involved in an activity, it can be ignored for a period of time, but is still distracting.
5 - Moderately strong pain. It can’t be ignored for more than a few minutes, but with effort you still can manage to work or participate in some social activities.
6 - Moderately strong pain that interferes with normal daily activities. Difficulty concentrating.
Severe Pain - Disabling; unable to perform daily living activities.
7 - Severe pain that dominates your senses and significantly limits your ability to perform normal daily activities or maintain social relationships. Interferes with sleep.
8 - Intense pain. Physical activity is severely limited. Conversing requires great effort.
9 - Excruciating pain. Unable to converse. Crying out and/or moaning uncontrollably.
10 - Unspeakable pain. Bedridden and possibly delirious. Very few people will ever experience this level of pain.

    "I only had two beers"
This reminds me of a little story that happened a couple of years ago:
My dad went to a party with his ex-coworkers (since they are all retired). 30 minutes in one of the coworkers said he needed to go to the bathroom and after not coming back for some time he went to check on him only to find a bunch of people gathered around his friend lying on the ground. They called an ambulance and the nurse from the first responders asked if they had anything to drink. They said he only had a glass and a half of wine since they only started. She looked at them and said "hah man", loaded the barely standing man into the ambulance and took him home, told his wife "here's you drunk husband" and left. His wife was confused as to how he could get so drunk in less than an hour since he left, but she still took him to bed. Since his condition hasn't gotten any better in the morning she called an ambulance and the SAME team that dropped him off in the evening came to pick him up. Drove him directly to the hospital. He wasn't drunk but had a stroke and barely survived with permanent brain damage.

The roofie thing though is genuinely a concern as well, I'd think to check their blood work for both alcohol levels AND any drugs just in case. There are also people who digest alcohol weird and can genuinely go blackout from only a few drinks (I know from experience) so it could be the truth too.
Bottom line doctors ask for a reason but if a patient is giving weird info, I feel like they should check all their bases just to be safe.

They came out to ask me question assume I was her bf. I said yea I’m not her bf. We are just friend and she doubled over in pain. She’s a virgin as far as I know. I’ve never even seen her have a bf she was always too busy doing other things to get ahead in life. They tested her twice and she said see I told you. I’m not sexually active. I did hear one of the nurses saying she couldn’t believe it and how she could miss out on a whole part of life and enjoy her youth. I guess my friend her that too cause when she got a room and I was in there and we were talking the nurse came in and my friend said you say I’m missing out but from everything I’ve seen it causes more issue between people than anything. I’m young I have many many years to have fun. I don’t see the need to give something special away to anyone who is nice to me. I started laughed. But on a different note I know most people who say "I don't know how I could be pregnant" just haven't processed the reality of the situation yet and they are sexually active. But I have a couple of friends who got pregnant from date rape, where they got drugged, and they did not know they they were attacked or exposed to semen. But now as an adult I've experienced new pain that is now a 10. But some doctors see it as over exaggerating I'd you keep coming back with different health issues and rating it a 10. Gallbladder was the worst pain I felt. They kicked me out of the hospital (because they thought I was there for drugs as unfortunate as these situations arise and I sure hope you've never been in one cause it sucks) but then child birth gave me a new 10 and the women there rolled their eyes. No one believes you when you say 10. They see 10 as "I'm currently dying". But it's also subjective to the person's pain tolerance. Some people might make a comment on how they've thought they knew pain until their new experience comes along. Being hit with a baseball bat vs a car. Both 10 experiences but depending on which you have first, it'll make a new 10, or the step up 11. It really just depends on the nurses and doctors you have and if they are kind enough to understand. I was thankful to have a kind primary, even if the hospital didn't help. Everyone has their own way to express the amount of pain and how to convey it. My friend explains by telling me something that it would feel closely too that is easy to imagine. Some people use numbers. I'm sure there are millions of different ways to show the pain.

I doubt they'd admit that in front of their parents, and not just kids, many people lie about pregnancy. If they don't do the test, they could potentially give you harmful medication or a harmful test that is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Are you the one who said that you're not pregnant? Yes. Could your mom or someone still sue them if you happened to be pregnant? Yes. Also, some things literally require pregnancy tests and they aren't allowed to do it otherwise. I'm honestly afraid of having to take a pregnancy test for something one day and getting a false positive or some Mary/Maryam stuff happening to me (despite knowing that the latter wouldn't happen, there would be no reason for it). I'm mostly scared of a false positive, especially since I barely go anywhere and I'd hate for my mom to not feel like she can't trust me anymore.

      Funny/not funny story...
A few months after I had my youngest daughter (traumatic birth-hemorraged twice) I had a kidney stone obstruction and went to the ER.
We were there with my VERY TINY infant (4lbs micro-preemie) who was only a week out of the NICU, and my husband is holding our sweet baby. I am told they need to give me a pregnancy test before they can give me a CT scan. No problem, right?
They came back and tell me the test is positive!! I FREAK OUT!!! Because I was told that if I have another baby that I will die. And as I am about to explain this to the doctor, I hear screaming and yelling in the room next to mine.
Woman 1: “HOW COULD YOU!!??? WE ARE MARRIED?!?! I TRUSTED YOU!!!!” Etc…
Woman 2: “HONEY!!! I SWEAR!! There must be some mistake!!! I have never in my life been with a man and I would NEVER cheat on you!! EVER!!!”
I mean she is sobbing, her wife is screaming at her and about to leave…
The doctor, my husband and I are all stunned into silence.
The doctor quickly excused himself and goes to assess the situation next door when we hear more yelling from ANOTHER ROOM!!!
Man: “WHAT?!?! We CAN’T be pregnant!!?? We are TOO OLD to have another baby!!!???”
Woman: *sobbing* “I thought it was just the fu!!! I can’t do this again!!”
I hear the nurses and doctors scrambling and my husband looks at me with his eyes wide, and we are like…”Are we in some weird movie? Some experiment that we are unaware of?” Like…what is going on???
So…the nurses and doctors go rushing into all of the rooms and tell all of us that they are going to redo the tests with a different lot number/batch of tests.
Lol…turns out that the batch of tests they used on all of us were faulty and all of our tests were negative!!

It's fuckin weird hearing about dilaudid when i went to the ER for a knee *cap* dislocation.
    But it IS STRONG
I was fully able to walk the day after my kneecap was relocated, without a brace unassisted.
One minute i was fine the next minute my knee felt like it was gonna split apart. I needed a knee brace and crutches/cane for 2 months.
DONT underestimate dilauded. It doesnt even feel like a painkiller, it makes you think you're normal, and thats the BAD part!

Which means I'm in pain 24/7 I stopped going to the ER because they never did anything since they found out by my doctor that I was taking medicine already. So Costochondritis, (inflamed lining of the ribs) and so many other symptoms that make you feel you're in so much pain. Just with Costochondritis you can't even breathe so you mistaken this with a heart attack. They twice gave me a prescription for Ibuprofen. 😒 Not even a good check up. They talked among themselves and all I said was she us a chronic patient.. And that was the last time I bothered them. I have more than 200 symptoms. Which are hurting me mentally and physically. I went to my local, small town ER after work one evening with a blinding migraine. The nurse was outstanding, even dimmed the overhead light for me... then the doctor came in.
I explained I had a long history of migraines that usually lasted for 3 to 5 days each with aura, that my PCP's office was in the adjoining building, he'd tried me on everything INCLUDING demerol, dilaudid, stadol and several other narcotics. The ONLY thing that really worked was Toradol (an anti inflammatory).
Instead of picking up on the fact that I told him narcotics don't work and I was asking for an anti inflammatory, he grabbed my arm and dragged me out in the open to a mirror and screamed "Why are your eyes so red? You don't work in a dusty environment!" I fired back, "I work 12 hour shifts i a carbide plant! We mix our own powder and machine it!" His tone instantly changed and he said, "my dad used to work in carbide" THEN he ordered a shot of Toradol that I'd asked for over 2 hours earlier - and acted like we were best friends... after essentially treating me like a drug seeking junkie!

About the pain scale: Most people don't know what it actually means. "The worst pain you can imagine" can be vastly different, since that is highly based off of someone's personal experience. Someone who has never actually had a limb amputated does not know what that pain would be like. It would be a good idea to put up charts that describe exactly what each pain level means, like a 10 would be, "I can't move or speak due to the pain". You can find them for free online.

It’s always best to open with why you can’t be pregnant because there’s a lot of myths, and misinformation out there. Sex ed unfortunately sucks for most people… there’s too many people who believe that the pull out method is effective, that if they don’t orgasm they can’t get pregnant, doing it in a certain position or eating some strange food means you can’t get pregnant… Not to mention the totally misplaced embarrassment and shame some people have for admitting to sex. But the best thing a patient can do is explain their recent sexual history in as much detail as possible. I always think it’s more considerate if a doctor takes you aside from any fmaily members to ask this, even if your answer is going to be no.
Even if that’s just “No I haven’t had sex, at all, including other sexual activities” or “I haven’t had sex with man because I’m a lesbian” rather than just saying “I can’t be pregnant”. Doctors are trying to make sure you’ve told them absolutely everything. If there’s a tiny chance you could be pregnant (like you’re on birth control or have been told you can’t get pregnant) doctors need to rule it out, since treating you for something else could out your life in danger. Or harm the foetus/cause a miscarriage. Which would be devastating for some women, or it could be seen as inducing an abortion which is now illegal in most states…

They asked me about 20 times if I was 100% sure there was no way I was pregnant. I eventually got so frustrated that I flat out told the nurse "I'm a Virgin, okay? I absolutely cannot be pregnant. Please just stop asking. I'll sign whatever waiver you need me to sign for you to run tests on me, but I'm not freaking pregnant." And even after that, they still asked me several times if I was sure. Guess what? I wasn't pregnant.
Went to a doctor 30 minutes away about a year later. Told that story to one of the nurses and they were flabbergasted. Told me that while some people do lie, they don't ask a million times to make sure. They said in their hospital they ask 3 times and then just get a waiver.

Coming from someone that is allergic to most medications, starting with benydril this one ticked me off. My allergies are tested and documented. No tylenol, motrin, nsaids, cox 2, anything ending in 'cet', codiene, 17 known antibiotics, compazine (had that reaction while I was IN a hospital as a patient), iodine, etc. Calling me a liar when all of this is detailed on medic alert items is something I've heard before ~ and I've walked out of appointments, ERs, etc. I'd rather die of whatever is wrong with me than some arrogant "medical professional's" force feeding me something I've went through anaphylaxis from. In truth, my worst fear is ending up in an ER unconscious and without someone that knows me and can advocate for me accompanying me. Aside from that, I've never shown up at an ER requesting pain meds. Once I did go in with a horrid toothache and asked for an antibiotic ~ and told them flat out I didn't want anything for pain. I have SLE and RA, and perpetually rotting teeth from the SLE. I've got more than enough to deal with without being called a liar by a complete stranger.
Sorry dude, this one was super offensive ~ and the fact that a lot of addicts scam you is no excuse for basically spitting on even a handful of patients because of it. Your statement is a perfect example of why I've been to a doctor maybe 6 times in the past 25 years, and why I'd feel safer/in better hands with my dog's veterinarian or the local witch doctor.
